4 out of 5 stars Old School but Still Good.......2007-04-13

This album was a gift to me when I was young. Remembered how much I enjoyed it but couldn't remember the name. I learned its name when I recognized the album cover in a used album store. Bought the CD from Amazon and still enjoy the fast tempo clean sound.

5 out of 5 stars Say No More: Les Dudek.......2005-09-10

What a fantastic old album. Great songs, nice Les Paul guitar.. Could be released tomorrow and noboody would know it was over 20 years old!

4 out of 5 stars He's right up there.............2004-06-03

I first heard L.D. back in the 70's,"Old Judge Jones" got some air play on Detroit's progressive FM stations, and I bought the vinyl, to my surprise the entire LP was very good (I don't throw the word great around too often). Les is very flavorful in his guitar phrasing, he can sing, play bass, and can write, ( he co-wrote "Jessica" with the Allmans). I played the "Say no more" CD a few days ago and I still "get off" on "One to Beam Up" and "Zorro Rides Again" two KICK-ASS instrumentals. Like other fans, I'm begging Sony to release ALL Les Dudek material (you guys will make your money back). I have every thing he's done on vinyl, including the "D.F.K. Band" , but the vinyl's wearing thin. If you like rock & roll guitar, well written songs, and very good productions, grab all the Les Dudek stuff you can find you won't be disappointed. Check out Les in the movie "Mask", with Cher and Sam Elliot, he played a biker named "Bone"

5 out of 5 stars A Classic!.......2003-10-30

My younger brother wore the grooves out of this when it came out. I bought him another copy for his birthday and one for myself. If you like The Allman Brothers (I believe Les played on Rambling Man) you need to get this cd! I agree with the other reviewers that it is past time for someone to get all of his music out. This is one cd you will come back to time and again, especially if you want to hear some guitar licks that are informed by the blues.

4 out of 5 stars Dudek- The Silent Perfectionist.......2003-03-26

Greetings-
As some of the afore mentioned revues have said, this is long over due. Les Dudek showed the American rock listening crowd that funky, bluesy straight-ahead rock-n-roll with a southern twist could help your Friday night get out and party mode.
A very under-rated artist with 4 lps under his belt,Les Dudek can definetly work his music into you and back out and leave you wondering " WOW!! did I just hear what I thought I heard ?. So you 70's compiling record CEO's quit wondering if it's going to sell or not. Just Do It.
Every musical artist deserves a second heyday in their career. Like us consumers say every now and then,"What ever happened to so and so? Who da man? DUDEK be the MAN. Buy "Say No More". It's all that's out there right now, but very much worth it.
Take care,
Big Behr

5 out of 5 stars An electric-guitar fan's dream.......2006-08-18

I first heard this album late one night through headphones when my college radio station played it in its entirety at the time of its release. Mesmerized, I purchased it the next day. I have always sought out great guitar work and consider this one of my favorite examples. Whereas some 70's guitarists' solos become over-extended and tedious, Dudek's solos have purpose, and he knows how to integrate them seamlessly and perfectly into the structure of his songs. The songs on this collection flow smoothly from one to the next, and it feels complete with a definite beginning, middle, and end.

Highlights for me on the album include the opening "Central Park," and prepare to be overwhelmed by the searing guitar work at the end of "Friend of Mine." "Does Anybody Care," with a reggae-inspired beat, has a nice message that is still relevant today. "Falling Out" achieves a great rock groove and demonstrates impeccable timing. The album ends masterfully with the title track.

I also own "Dudek" and "Say No More." Both certainly have their highlights, but I recommend this one, "Ghost Town Parade," as Dudek's most fully realized masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this one!!!!!!!.......2005-12-19

Be it "Ghost Town" the other initial Dudek albums "Les Dudek" or "Say No More" you will have a great addition to your collection.

My L.P. collection had (and still has) copies of each and they have been WELL played.

Les' guitar playing is robust and intense - a great example of a style that was prevelant in the Bay area during the 70's. While I agree that there is some influence of the annoyance of the late 70's - disco - I do not feel that it in any way detracts from the music or total feel of the disc.

I have been turning people on to Les for many many many years now and this album was always a sure fire introduction to one of the great guitar players to survive the 70's.

Buy ... Listen... Be Happy

5 out of 5 stars This is an absolutely awesome album.......2005-11-04

This album (vinyl then) was constantly on in my dorm room when I was in college. Les is an outstanding guitar player and this album has some of the best slide guitar I have ever heard. No klunkers in the play list. I have turned many skeptics on to this album, and they always thank me afterwards.

5 out of 5 stars The third of the three essential Les Dudek releases.......2005-06-18

I first became aware of Les Dudek from his appearance on the Allman Brothers' "Brothers & Sisters". When Boz Scaggs' "Silk Degrees" was at the height of its popularity here in Australia, I chanced upon "Say No More" in a record store. I asked the store owner to play the album for me. For some reason, the owner played side two for me. I was instantly hooked. "Old Judge Jones", "What's It Gonna Be" and "Zorro Rides Again" were (and remain) wonderful songs.

Having purchased "Say No More" and, later, the eponymous debut album, I had no hesitation in buying "Ghost Town Parade" upon its release. It is different from the earlier albums. The influence of the disco era can be heard (there are syn drums on some tracks which sound terribly dated today) and, if I recall correctly, Les used a Strat rather than a Les Paul on a number of tunes. Having said all that, it is a killer album with wonderful guitar playing throughout. Having recently purchased the CD, I agree with other reviewers that it stands the test of time remarkably well.

This was the last great album released by Les, in my view. The trio of "Les Dudek", "Say No More" and "Ghost Town Parade" represents a memorable synthesis of West Coast pop and Southern rock guitar stylings. Each of these albums is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Les is more.......2005-05-22

Les absolutely nails it on this re-release of his 1978 album. Killer guitar, killer vocals, and killer musicianship. Although this is my favorite, all his other releases are very strong as well. Les is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated and under appreciated guitarists/vocalist/songwriters of his era. All you need to do is listen to this CD and hear it for yourself. You will not be sorry. Now go and buy all his other releases that are finally on CD and enjoy the music!!

5 out of 5 stars Had to catch my breath.......2005-10-04

I couldn't agree more with the first reviewer! When I typed in Les Dudek in the search, and saw this album pop up, I actually gasped. I have been waiting over 20 years for this album to be re-released. If you don't have this album, you need to get it!! The song "What a Sacrifice" will never be duplicated. There was a watered down version on a Steve Miller album of no particular note (except for this song). Get this album, and prepare to be amazed.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome Back Les!.......2004-04-13

It's wonderful to see this classic back! If you are a fan of the Allman Brothers or Boz Scaggs you must have this CD! He played with the Allman Brothers on Brothers and Sisters and was on Boz's Silk Degrees. A killer guitarist in the tradition of Duane and the vocal style of Gregg, with the production and songwriting of a cross of both the Allman's and Boz. The songs are excellent. Why this has been out of print? I do not know. I have been waiting for it for years. Pick up a copy of a lost classic, you will not be disappointed!

This cd suprised me, i have to say! I absolutely love this woman and as u can tell with this cd, she can sing anything and everything! Like i said, i was suprised but in a good way. The woman is just amazing, this cd is a definate must have for any cher fan out there!!! Rock on cher, you're simply amazing!

        5 out of 5 stars CHER'S "BLACK ROSE" IS A WINNER.......2005-02-09

I think this 1980 re-release still stands up today. True talent like Cher's never diminishes over time. Originally released simply as "BLACK ROSE" without fanfare that Cher was the lead singer of this new rock group, they really should have gone further. I think Casablanca Records was going through a transition at the time and really dropped the ball on this one. It simply wasn't promoted. (Cher made up for it in the late 90's with her own rock success.) The band really rocks...tremendously talented musicians made up this band. The production values are excellent. The songs are really good and memorable. Be happy it's been made available on CD. A must-have for Cher fans!

3 out of 5 stars Cher can really do it all.......2000-06-19

Without Cher, I would probably hate every second of this record - with the exception of guitarist (and Cher's then-boyfriend) Les Dudek's song, "You Know it". The remaining tracks were written by outside writers, something very rare for rock bands at the time (but not rare for Cher). It's a grab-bag of moderate rock tunes that I could take or leave; the magic happens when Cher sings them.

"Never Should've Started" kicks the record off to a good start, demonstrating promise in the songwriting. Right away, it is clear that Cher is in rocker mode - she adds a nice rasp to her voice now and then and sing-screams many lines to suit the style, doing so exceptionally well. "Julie" is weaker but still likable, and Cher means business - beware the occasional profanity on this record, beginning with this track. The next few songs are filler and have yet to excite me to any degree. "You Know It", as I mentioned before, is a strong track and Cher and Les wrap their harmonies around one another beautifully. It's got a shuffle-type tempo and could easily have been a Fleetwood Mac song. "Young and Pretty", in my opinion, is the highlight of the record - not that it's an outstanding song, but Cher sings it with superb emotion and conviction. At first it bothered me that most of the song was sung in a low vocal register, but it grew on me and only added to the dramatic flare of the track. The record closes with "Fast Company", with a nice guitar riff, but the song itself is nothing to write home about.

It's easy to see why Cher was so musically satisfied with her Black Rose experience - she is very, very good at singing the style (what CAN'T she sing? Folk, Pop, Hard Rock, AOR, Southern Rock, Dance, A/C, wow!) and brings nearly all of the quality to this album. A nod to Les Dudek for his talents - it's too bad we couldn't have heard more from him.

5 out of 5 stars this was totally awsome.......1999-09-14

CHER IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF A HARD WORKING SUPERSTAR SHE IS THE STRONGEST ONE OF THEM ALL THIS REALLY PROVES IT.

4 out of 5 stars good CD for any Cher fan.......1999-07-17

Black Rose is well worth buying if you are a fan of Cher, it certainly is one of the only CD's by her that is all rock music. Perhaps though, if you are just looking for a good album by her, then it may be better to look elsewhere at some of her more typical pop/rock music. Black rose proves that Cher can rock just as well as some other artists, but her voice is more suited, in my opinion, to songs leaning more towards pop, such as those found in "Believe."
