Depending on your sense of humor, William Hung's 15 minutes of fame on one 2004 episode of American Idol were either a joke or the high point of the show's season. Tone-deaf, karaoke-trained, and a far cry from the series' polished and trendy wannabe pop stars, Hung was booted halfway through his classic cover of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs." Inspiration, his first (and possibly last) CD, gives his legion of fans a chance to hear him in his entirety. Basically, it's Hung with karaoke background music, warbling through classics such as "Hotel California," "Rocket Man," and "Y.M.C.A." A few "inspirational thought" tracks are interspersed between the songs, giving you insight into the UC Berkeley student's self-confidence and enthusiasm. A bonus DVD even contains new footage and interviews of Hung in action. There are plenty of classic, imaginative novelty records out there--consider the Shaggs, Lucia Pamela, and Mrs. Miller--but this isn't one of them. Hung's backing music is too bland and, after a few tracks, the joke wears a little thin. But if you must hear more of this unlikely American Idol, here's your chance. --Jason Verlinde

Wander through the coke-lined lyrics of Young Jeezy's Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 and now The Inspiration, its keep-it-entirely-real follow-up, and you may never look at a snowman or a box of baking soda the same way again. But what you lose in the way of crack-trade innocence you gain in a clear picture of why few rappers in the game get Jeeps to rattling as reliably: Jeezy--never mind the hopped-up hustler bluster--is a hugely magnetic figure, a ghetto go-getter capable not only of laying down the kind of loosey-goosey lyrics that make you want to clap him on the back for untangling street-wiseness from seriousness but of inspiring some kind of out-there superhero comic book series, too. Other rappers drip on the ATL drawl, but none as winningly (check the Timbaland-produced "3 A.M."). And other rappers spit trademark phrases a la James Brown's "Good God!," but few as adroitly (Jeezy's "ha ha" sticks). Friends help--something divine issues from the pipes of Keyshia Cole on "Dreamin,'" and DJ Toomp puts the T.I. treatment on "I Luv It"--but at the end of a long day of trappin' and playin' this is Jeezy's party. --Tammy La GorceAmazon.com

With Atlanta serving up some of the hottest product in the rap game, native son Young Jeezy stands as one of the most exciting merchants of cool to emerge in years. You will only hear of maybe two tracks through MTV or radio - but honestly the whole album is dope. Jeezy's flow over sick beats is a match made in heaven - and shouldn't be confused with any kind of one-hit wonder or short lived rap.
having said that, my favorite tracks are;
"U Know What It Is"
"Still On It"
"I Luv It"
"I Got Money" (featuring T.I.)
not many guest features on here - taking it back to the old school. T.I. and R. Kelly make appearances - and the copy I picked up at Best Buy has two exclusive tracks, featuring Three 6 Mafia.
This album has the feeling of a raw mixtape style release - not hyed much by any labels or promotion as far as I remember, I didn't know it was coming out until a week before it's release. The production is tight, and as he has consistently done; Jeezy delivers. Go buy this album!

Though it's hard to doubt the faith or fault the selection on Alabama's first album of religious inspiration--and first release of new recordings in more than five years--the arrangements range from the heavenly to the syrupy. The best are the simplest and purest, showing why familiar hymns such as "In the Garden," "How Great Thou Art," "Rock of Ages," and "The Old Rugged Cross" have such staying power. Yet the swelling (synthesized?) strings on "Amazing Grace" and "Silent Night" overwhelm rather than enhance the grace of the material, and the children's chorus provided by granddaughters of Alabama's Teddy Gentry on "Jesus Loves Me" is a little cloying. The unvarnished vocals of guest Ralph Stanley highlight the banjo-and-fiddle-driven "I Am the Man Thomas," and gospel's the Isaacs provide ethereal harmonies on "I Need Thee." Lead singer Randy Owen offers two strong originals to close the album, the ecumenical celebration of "One Big Heaven" and the uptempo "Rain" that sounds most like the old Alabama. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Epitome of Cello.......2006-06-23
The concertos on the first CD are spectacular, especially her rendition of the Elgar concerto which has defined the piece since she first performed it. The second CD, however, is just as wonderful as a collection of some of the most loved cello pieces. No cello recording complete without Saint Saen's "The Swan" and du Pré's version is the only one I've ever heard that I actually like. "Elégie in C minor" (composed by Gabriel Fauré) is one of my personal favorites especially since her rapport with the pianist is obvious and the two instruments blend in a way that makes the piece even more poignant.
Overall, this CD is a must-have for anyone who loves cello as a perfect sample of Jacqueline du Pré's work.

The second release of inspirational music from the country harmonizers mixes plenty of familiar, traditional spirituals with a few originals. The guitar-driven "I Am a Pilgrim" has the trademark lope of a Waylon Jennings arrangement, while more acoustic fare such as "Children in the Wildwood" and "If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again" has a folkish purity. Alabama join forces with the Del McCoury Band for a revival of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and with Riders in the Sky for campfire cowboy harmonizing on "Love Lifted Me." The set-closing transformation of "The Star Spangled Banner" into a ballad with swirling strings extends the concept of inspirational music from the spiritual to the patriotic. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Alabama's Continues to "Inspire".......2007-04-10
When "Songs of Inspiration" drops in at the pinnacle of the Billboard country album chart without even a radio single, Alabama continues to prove its viability as the bastion of country music. Five months after this successful jaunt, this second installment of the group's foray into inspirational favorites arrives. Recorded in the same session as the first volume, this set also finds lead singer Randy Owen in the producer seat. Further, a similar sonic semblance of gentler and acoustic-leaning underpinnings under gird this new disc. Hence, whether this new collection was initially planned or quickly garnered to capitalize on the success of the first volume remains debatable. Nevertheless, regardless of the album's sui genesis, thus far, "Vol. 2" has flared equally well coming in on the Billboard country album chart at no. 3, trailing only behind Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood.
However, the major departure for this set is the presence of more traditional country inspirational numbers relative to just re-workings of traditional hymns of the church. Best of which is the obscure "If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again," an understated guitar-driven mid-tempo reflection of times passed. This is made even more poignant by the group's sibling-like harmonies in the chorus. "Suppertime," a track associated at times with Johnny Cash, also continues the theme of nostalgia that tethers on the maudlin. "The Refrain of John Dillon James," a bluesy rock story song with an arresting plot, which finds Owen delivering with guts and gall. Also, calling back to mind Alabama at their rocking best is their rowdy version of "Down by the Riverside," a 180 degree-overturn of Alison Krauss' famed dirge-like rendition.
Of the two newly penned songs, Teddy Gentry's "When It's My Time to Go" is a gorgeous ballad about a life well-lived (which includes "having Jesus at my side"). Equipped with some tasty steel guitars over a well-crafted melody that calls to mind their "A Better Word for Love," this is indeed a fine piece of art. "One Life," coming from the pens of Eric Todd and Buck Moore, is also a top notched ballad, this time recounting the significance of Christ's birth. A track that ought to be do well during Christmas time. However, the tiresome rendition of old hymns such as "Precious Memories" and "Love Lifted Me" create some yawning moments. While the workman-like rendition of "Church in the Wildwood" sounds more demo-like than a finished product. And pushing the envelope of "inspirational" is the string-laden version of "The Star Spangled Banner." More befitting to the tenor of this CD, more verses (especially the more overtly Christian verses) of this anthem should have been included.
This set is a tad of an improvement from the first volume especially with the inclusion of more propulsive material. However, at times the arrangement of some of these tracks can benefit from a more imaginative production. And with already two volumes of inspiration songs, let's hope that the saturation point is reached. As much as inspirational songs are welcomed, Alabama is still at their best with their original secular material. Let's hope RCA Records will greet us with a new Alabama country record in the near future.

Always Fresh!.......2007-07-22
4 1/2 stars-- cooled off........2007-05-17
This isn't to say that "Fresh" is light pop fare. On the contrary, it's a fantastic record, dark in its own way, but it's really quite a bit less intense then its predecessor. At its best, it finds a midtempo, loping sound over which Stone can wail out full of passion and the band can form a swirl around him, single and standout "If You Want Me To Stay" is a fine example of this-- the bassline provides a graceful drive, Stone is passionate in his lead vocal, and the horns cascade around him. By and large, the album sticks to this midtempo funk, driven by the basslines and at times angular guitars ("In Time") or swanky horns ("Skin I'm In"). Stone does develop a tendency to mumble and ramble here and there ("Frisky"), but by and large the great on this one manages to blindingly overshadow the bad and Stone proves stunningly inventive, even taking a schlock Doris Day pop song and making it into a fantastic soul/gospel number ("Que Sera Sera") and survives a remake of hit "Dance to the Music" as a chilled funk number ("Keep on Dancin'", which proves to be quite engaging).
This reissue has been remastered and adds a handful of alternate mixes as bonus tracks as well as including new liner notes. The bonus tracks here are interesting-- Sly Stone had tinkered substantially with the mix on "Fresh" before settling on its released version, although at some point in its early CD release history, alternate mixes for some of the record leaked out (and were quickly recalled by the label). Some of these are actually quite superior to the original mix, illustrating significantly more space and occasionally benefitting from a lack of overdubs-- "Let Me Have it All" is the best example of this, without the layers of vocal overdubs, Sly's vocal really shines. The remastering on this is equally top notch, the record sounds great throughout.
"Fresh" is always going to be thought of as the album that followed "There's a Riot Goin' On"-- it's not quite as good as its predecessor (or as "Stand!" before that), but truthfully this came at the end of a window where Sly Stone could do no wrong. "Fresh" is a fine record in its own right. Highly recommended.
In Time Fresh Just Gets Fresher.......2007-04-14
There's a Riot Goin' On ,both of which are considered classics. But trying to judge any Sly & The Family Stone did in the late 60's and early 70's is like trying to debate which chocolate you like best.If you love chocolate, you love it all.One thing 'Fresh' really helps you understand about Sly Stone is that he's a slick producer. Not in the sense of over doing it but how he takes, for example the first song "In Time" with it's gritty organ/guitar sound and get it all to sound smooth as melted caramel all at the same time. The best part about that song is the use of the rhythm box beat;unlike like drumming it gives the music a very exotic, modern feel and a lot of emotion rather then sound cold and artificial.Even more interesting to note is that "Let Me Have It All","Skin I'm In' and "Keep On Dancin",something of a reprise of "Dance To The Music" from six years earlier all share the same style-deep,brooding but funky and never at a slow crawl as the music on the previous album was.On the hit "If You Want Me To Stay" the absense of Larry Graham comes to the surface as newcomer Rusty Allen takes a more timid bassline but the song itself showcases an important theme;'Fresh' is an album about Sly letting go of the past and creating a new future;Sly tells us that if we "want to him stay" he'll be around but we should let him be himself in the meantime. The same theme extends into Sly's version of "Que Sera Sera",which takes the frothy meloncaughly of the Doris Day original into pure gospel/blues passion (plus primetime drama lovers will note it was featured in an episode of 'Judging Amy').The "old" Sly & The Family Stone is best represented on "If It Were Left Up To Me" with that perky horn style of "Everyday People" and, lyrically is matches up very well with the mildly claustraphobic funk of "Babies Makin' Babies",a flat out terrific funk tune that really does the impossible;it's funky and cool at the same time, two things that seldom go together. All five of the bonus cuts being alternate takes you get to see 'Fresh' in the trial and error stages with echo plexed vocals on "Frisky" and the music on "Babies Makin' Babies" kept even further in the backround. As for this CD the remaster of 'Fresh' is excellent, especially the stereo seperation which makes the album sound more genuine then even the first CD reissue.Plus the fact you get very good liner notes that actually enhance the listening experience rather then detract from it.So as an album (if you never heard it before this) 'Fresh' lives up to it's title by being an ear catching musical experience that will draw you right into it's grooves and melodies. And even if you've already heard it a million times this will make you love it all over again.

sappy love songs.......2006-09-14
it might have been a bit tedious and boring.
The problem is everywhere: If you are a Hardrock fan like bands Uriah Heep, Stevie Ray Vaughan, AC/DC, Rory Gallagher, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, your ears can't be familar with all these silly love songs. My ears cannot work like that.
there are two alternatives:
- if you are a hardrock fan. You like a mythological lyrics, you won't like Peter Cetera or Chicago. Keep your fingers away from this !!!
- if you are a sappy love song fan then please buy this cd !!!
As a huge Peter Cetera fan, one could hardly fault this;.......2006-07-14

I was excited for the new versions of these two songs because I thought they would be very similar to their original Chicago recordings. This is not the case, but the new versions grew on me and I dig them. There are a couple more new tracks that are classic Peter C. All in all, this CD is a good buy.

Truly "The Inspiration!".......2004-05-27
This is definitely NOT a "Greatest Hits" collection nor was it intended to be. But, there are some nice remix versions of old favorites. "Baby What a Big Surprise" is particularly good. Also on board is a hard-to-find duet; the haunting "I Wasn't The One Who Said Goodbye" with Agnetha Faltskog.
Bottom Line: This compilation is a must-have for dedicated fans to round out their Cetera collections. The soft, slow theme of the music is especially well-suited for a long drive, or for a spin inside on a rainy day
Missing some classics.......2002-07-03
The remakes of the songs he performed with Chicago are OK, but would have been better to have put them in a box set or something, not using up the space of three tracks on an eleven-track disc. The age-old wisdom holds true here, "you don't mess with the classics." I don't fault him for trying to update the sound, it just didn't really fit with what he's been doing as a solo artist.
I enjoyed the duets: "Next Time I Fall" w/Amy Grant; "Feels Like Heaven" w/Chaka Khan; "(I Wanna Take) Forever Tonight" w/Crystal Bernhard--although his voice really overpowers hers; but especially the inclusion of "After All" w/Cher--very happy to see this here. And the new songs were pretty good, too, with "Do You Love Me That Much" grabbing my attention the most.
For a stronger collection, that would brought more satisfaction to his listeners (and probably bigger sales), they should have included "Glory of Love", "Big Mistake", "Daddy's Girl", "Only Love Knows Why", "One Good Woman", "Heaven Help This Lonely Man", "Restless Heart", "Even a Fool Can See", etc. To avoid having to hit the SKIP button you pretty much have to pick up his other cd's and burn your own compilation of favorites.
Some bright spots here--completists will need it for the new songs and "After All" (unless you have the Cher greatest hits cd). Otherwise hope for a future "Best of..." release from Mr. Cetera.
