Editorial Reviews

The late '70s found Bonnie Raitt casting about for a new musical direction. Ironically, she found it on 1982's Green Light by going back to the basics. The album finds her using her road musicians, the Bump Band (including former Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan) and handling most of the guitar chores herself, resulting in a confident, high-energy set. The hard-charging "Willy Wontcha" rocks with abandon, as do Raitt's covers of a pair of NRBQ tunes, "Me and the Boys" and "Green Lights." There's also a Bob Dylan track, "Let's Keep It Between Us" and a little easy-in-the-islands charm, courtesy of Eddy Grant's "Baby Come Back." --Daniel Durchholz

Pedal down and drivin' hard, Bonnie knows how to rock and roll, too. Some hard-core fans saw 'Home Plate' and 'Green Light' as too commercial. (These are the same people who booed Dylan's electric guitar...) Throughout her career, she's done what she wants and if that honesty coincided with some more accessible music, I sure don't begrudge her. I think Sippie Wallace would approve...

5 out of 5 stars Awesome (but little known) Bonnie Raitt Album.......2006-04-02

This has always been one of my favourite Bonnie Raitt albums! I'm so glad it finally came out on CD. "Keep This Heart In Mind" is in my opinion one of her best songs.

5 out of 5 stars GO!.......2005-12-30

Bonnie Raitt is great and this is her best record. Get it and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bonnie Raitt Album.......2005-10-05

GREEN LIGHT is a great Bonnie Raitt CD. The songs are all great, with a couple of exceptions. Among highlights are the Lowell George memorial "River Of Dreams"; the rockers "Willya Wontcha" and "I Can't Help Myself"; and the NRBQ cover "Me And The Boys." Raitt's belief that the youg Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted makes GREEN LIGHT an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars Bonnie rocks those blues away.......2004-03-08

This album is predominately an up-tempo rocking album - it never slows below mid-tempo - although Bonnie's roots in blues music are still in evidence. This was the first Bonnie Raitt album I ever bought and is still my favorite among those I've heard. Apparently, the musicians used on this album were the ones that backed her on tour at the time rather than studio musicians.

Bonnie found some great songs here by noted songwriters such as Eric Kaz (River of tears) and Bob Dylan (Let's keep it between us, one of his more obscure but still excellent songs). Two songs were written by Terry Adams of NRBQ - the title track and Me and the boys.

To my ears, the standout track is Baby come back, perhaps because I was already familiar with the song even before Bonnie started her long and distinguished career. Eddy Grant wrote this song in the sixties, when he was lead singer of the Equals. Their original version of the song went all the way to number one in the UK charts in 1968. Bonnie's cover is faithful to the original but equally brilliant.

I love to hear Bonnie sing the blues but this album shows that Bonnie could rock too. It may not be typical, but it's great entertainment.

Album Description

Full title - Light Of The Day, Day Of Darkness. Immensely epic in scope, blasting through dark passages of swollen, over-distorted guitars to serene, idyllic moments of acoustic & choral enchantment, this release will surely go down in history as one of the most progressive, innovative albums to ever see the light of day. More than 30 musicians were involved into this epic project, including full opera & children's choirs, classical composers, saxophonists, church organists & a lot more. This highly complex work of art was recorded using 150 tracks & almost 600 samplers. The End Records.

5 out of 5 stars A COMEPLETE MASTERPIECE - In every sense of the word..........2007-05-17

'Light of Day, Day of Darkness' is a complete album in every possible way: Not only is the album one continuous song; it is one whole composition, fitted together with all the necessary components that make for a complete masterpiece!!!
The epic nature of this song is really hard to describe in words. Although I have listened to it multiple times in its entirety I am always amazed by its brilliance. The band utilizes a full orchestra with their powerful riffs to create climactic build-ups within the composition. The intensity of these developments sometimes lead straight into another guitar sequence of even more epic proportions. The male vocals on this composition are perfectly suited to the mood and flow of the piece, sung mostly in a baritone type range, with some operatic sections and minimal yelling. The female chanting/singing in the middle section of the song is wonderfully appropriate followed by a lengthy guitar solo that is completely euphoric.
The tones used for many of the riffs are a high-pitched metallic sound that immediately result in serious head-banging. The great thing about this piece is how some of the riffs are recurring throughout while also incorporating newer soundscapes into the composition as it unfolds, thus creating a complete song - unlike other bands who seem to combine multiple songs into one just for the sake of creating a single song.
No amount of words can ever do this album justice - it quickly became one of my favorite albums ever upon hearing it a few times through. If you like epic progressive metal this is a must have!

RECOMMENDATION: If you want to hear other metal of epic and progressive nature then check out Aghora's album 'Formless'. The riffage will not disappoint you!

4 out of 5 stars a differant, but equally intersting green carnation.......2006-10-18

This album if you have not yet gathered consists of one peice of music. On some editions the peice has been split into tracks , but it is still just one peice of music.
It starts off with some samples and acoustic guitars, light drums and clean vocals. This sets the mood for the album. It is a dark reflective peice of music, yet this is not doom metal, nor does it get particularily heavy or fast at any point.
The Song is a series of passages and twists and turns. Passages are repeated and referred back to in various places so the listener can grab some sense of familiarality, and it ends much like it finishes. But inbetween there is many parts, some good riffs and some nice vocal parts, both clean and black metal inspired.

This peice however is not about choruses and riffs, it is about atmosphere and mood and it creates these very well.A dark reflective song it can engulf the listener as it evolves and changes, builds up to false climaxes and unexpected changes.
It could be perhaps more varied, yet like i said the peice sets a mood and it does so very well. Even so, there is a fair amount of textures and dynamics here, ranging from picked acoustic guitars, to double pedals and distorted guitars, to (original) clean vocal, to black metals vocals, to tense string-like riffs even to saxaphone solos and female scat singing.
The lyrics are about the fall into insanity which add to the musical depth of the album.

this album is worth buying if you are into intelligent metal at all, opeth, agalloch, black metal, katatonia etc...

In short, this is not a novelty project, it is a complete peice as a whole (even though it is part 1 of a later sequal) with a varied soundscape and use of dynamics. Heavy at times, darkly beautiful at others.

worth hearing if you are into metal / rock / experintal or just have an ear for good music

thankyou

5 out of 5 stars A prog-metal epic that lives up to the hype!.......2006-04-22

I realize a lot of people give extra high ratings to concept albums, especially single song concept albums. Most of the time the ratings are totally undeserved. However, this album really is interesting. I was very skeptical because with the exception of Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick, most of these projects fall woefully short of a 5 star rating.

In all honesty, so does this recording. It isn't an "absolute, must have or your life will be unfulfilled" kind of recording. However, it is better than most skeptics like myself would have thought. Even my "metal-phobic" friends and co-workers enjoyed this effort. It's got enough metal to have a bite when needed and enough prog to draw you into their world. I've only listened to the album 7 times since buying it a couple weeks ago, so I'm not too deeply involved into the lyrics and story. Then again, I rarely pay attention to lyrics unless they are audaciously bad.

I'm not going to go into minute by minute detail other than to say as others have said that the female vocalist's solo in the middle of the song is not only bad, but it is also out of place and ill-fitting the rest of the music. Personally, I ripped this into a sound editor, removed that section, and reassembled the track. That alone puts it in the 4.5 star category. All in all, this is well worth the $12 investment and will definitely provide a lot of musical enjoyment in the years to come.

3 out of 5 stars could have been better........2005-10-08

I don't know why some people compare this album to anything Pink Floyd has done, because quite honestly this album doesn't compare. It is an admirable effort and overall pretty decent, but not even in the same ballpark in terms of greatness as The Wall, or Dark Side of the Moon.

I decided to put the 60 minute opus on while I write this review. There are some great riffs at the start, and indeed, throughout most of the first 30 minutes, but that's about where it ends. Kjetil Nordhus' voice kind of reminds me Jonas Renkse, the singer from Katatonia. It's very pleasant, and has a sad, lamenting quality that doesn't sound overdone.

It's pretty obvious that the 60 minute track is actually several different songs tied together, and in that respect it's not written very well. Good progressive music is beginning at one point and arriving at an entirely different point and not being able to explain exactly how you got there because it sounds so natural. An example would be Agalloch's brilliant song In The Shadow of Our Pale Companion. This track isn't like that. It's not arranged very well, but it's not bad either. It's just not something I get lost in.

There are some great moments in this album, though. Great riffs, but most of them happen before minute 33. Indeed, it's when you're cruising along to a kickass riff that the song drops off a frickin' cliff and goes into a quiet passage. The vocals change, and the woman kind of reminds me of Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can Dance, although less impressive. This halfway point is usually where I start the CD over, because as I said before everything up to that point is really, really good. The song just loses a ton of momentum at the halfway point, and even though I've heard the whole thing on more than a couple occasions, I can't be arsed to review it proper. So I'm just going to say it was less impressive than the first half, although there's some good stuff happening around minute 44-55.

The quiet passage just doesn't work for me at all, which is unfortunate because it cuts the song in half. It would've been better to end quiety with it, because then the arrangement would've at least made some sense.

If you're a fan of progressive music, or if you are interested in this band/CD soley on the strength of the bands it is associated with (like me), then you'll probably dig it. It's certainly not epic SOUNDING, nor is it life-changing, so as long as your expectations are in check you'll be okay.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-08-25

This album is definitely different than anything I've ever heard. I'm a huge metalhead & love all things heavy. This CD is actually kind of mellow, with heavier parts. When it comes to the more mellow music, it takes a lot to really get me, most of it just gets really boring. This is a very good one, sort of psycedelic actually. A great one to get stoned to. It has some hints of heavier metal that really adds a lot to it also. One of my favorite things about it is that it's only 1 song, a song that lasts an hour. That's something you don't see too often. If you can get into the more melodic Opeth stuff you'll like this CD for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Ensemble Galilei's music is lilting, elegant and unexpected!.......2002-11-29

With their soulful playing and artful, sometimes even ephemeral arrangements, the six women of Ensemble Galilei convey a rare depth of emotion. In the insert notes, gamba player Carolyn Ann Surrick describes their creative process: "[In making this recording, we engaged in]...a kind of work that is so focused and intense that years can go by in one afternoon... Extraordinary music-making requires trust... [We] live for the times when the only thing that exists right then is the music--when the instruments are speaking as if we don't exist, and they are having their own conversation." Thank you, Ensemble Galilei, for allowing the rest of us the privilege of coming along for the ride! It's simply delectable. This chamber ensemble, featuring fiddle, harp, gamba, oboe, pipes and percussion, can also be heard on their other Telarc release, "From the Isles to the Courts", and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music", on the Dorian label.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2001-01-22

Sheer beauty, as a lover of English music I found this to be one of the most beautiful of all Shakespearean albums. Such harmony, such subtlety, one wishes that the gentle night will never stop.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2001-01-04

Ensemble Galilei provide some excellent arrangements of English renaissance compositions. I believe that John Playford (English Dancing Master) fans will be particularly satisfied with the renditions presented here. It is very unfortunate that E.G. did not provide more arrangements from such early music sources. Some of E.G.'s own compositions seem very weak and not in the renaissance spirit of the rest of the CD. Nonetheless, this CD is highly recommmended.

5 out of 5 stars It will bring about many gentle nights.......2000-11-22

I found this album to be solid. Very sweet, but not afraid to use percussion which makes it livelier and more fun. I adore the quiet, peacefulness of the music and the flawless execution of these renaissance songs.

5 out of 5 stars Visualizing Beauty.......2000-08-20

I recently had the good fortune to direct a performance of King Lear--the ENTIRE five acts, in a community theatre, non-profit setting. I used twenty-four fully committed non-actors, who for the love of the ideas, participated in this performance. The first and main challenge that I faced was, how do I go "behind" the words, and invoke the right emotions, etc., to give these actors the range and tools needed for an effective, powerful performance? Critical to this performance was the beauty and brilliance of this recording, which I used throughout the various scenes of the play. This helped the performers tremendously, creating the different tapestries in the mind of the Bard. In short, this work is real genius, that I was so happy that I stumbled across. I am now putting in our performance programs, along with our most heart-felt thanks to E.G., the name of the recording and I have copies from Telarc to sell at each performance!

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

I was introduced to The Echoing Green on a compilation CD some years back, and thank god for that. This band keeps getting better and better. There aren't many albums (by many artists) that I can sit through and listen to every track without getting bored, but The Winter of Our Discontent has me hooked on every song. Beautiful tones, poetic and meaningful lyrics, and talented vocals. A must have for any fan of electronic music.

Favorite Songs: Apology, Story of Our Lives, and the cover of New Gold Dream.

5 out of 5 stars What to say?.......2006-06-29

(note, I have a different version of this album than the one listed)

great cd from the echoing green. as a depeche mode and iris fan, this was my first echoing green cd and i was impressed. what really surprised me were 2 tracks that could fit right in with an early nine inch nails cd. best tracks are "the story of our lives" and the middle eastern tinged "bittersweet".

5 out of 5 stars Light Green Leaves.......2004-03-24

This is one of my favorite all time CD's. I will never miss a Little Wings show in my town, and will buy every CD, forever: because of this album. Light Green Leaves reminds to see beauty in everything, and to experience the world in awe and wonder... without being cheesy. Absolutely beautiful, and fun too!

5 out of 5 stars Will Oldham on Prozac.......2003-05-06

Light Green Leaves is definitely more of a Will Oldham sound and Wonderue does have a Flaming Lips likeness at points, but Kyle has a style all his own. I find his songwriting much more quick-witted than Will or Wayne. I'm not saying he's a better writer than Will, but he definitely packs more of a kick with his lyrics. Especially on "Next Time". He'll having you laughing before you can figure out what the hell he's singing about. I highly recommend this album for anyone who digs Will Oldham, Songs:Ohia, Flaming Lips, Destroyer or M.Ward.

5 out of 5 stars "...feel the tangle come undone"-lw.......2003-01-29

honesty and simplicity are sometimes the most powerful tools in music. little wings knows this. if you like to take er' easy and explore the beauty of life, this album may help confirm that your on the right path. extremely grounded lyrics on a planet with no gravity. folky goodness with big heart and beautiful melody. what more can you ask for?

5 out of 5 stars Organic Minimalism.......2002-12-29

Take away all the artificial operations, observe the trees, the light, the strength. Pure, organic, futuristic utopia. This album is very low-key yet tinged with subtle power. Great listening for the Fall, Spring, Summer, and even in the Winter when you need an extra dose of organic sunshine. Listen to this, eat a bunch of veggies n' organic food and feel all awesome. hope in music is neat

5 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Album .......2006-12-29

Al Green's 1985 album HE IS THE LIGHT is a classic gospel album. The sounds on this album are great! I remember first hearing this back in the late 80s when my mother bought the album on cassette. My favorite tracks have to be the title track, "True Love", and "I Feel Like Going On." The material on this album is uplifting and has a nice pop-soul feel to it. It is a great album to play when you're not feeling to good, but it will help you retain a positive perspective on life. HE IS THE LIGHT is my favorite Al Green gospel album and hopefully you will enjoy it too.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Soul Gospel That Raised The Bar.......2003-11-26

If you love the Rev. Al's best music from the 70's with the brilliant production of Willie Mitchell and the classic soul sounds of the Hi Rhythm Section then you must get this one. It's all there for Al Green to sing about his Saviour once again because he is re-united with his old friends. He didn't make one exactly like this again, with all these ingredients. Take, for example, the title song - melodic, easy and devotional gospel to lift your heart in worship. For the brilliant song, Power, he draws you into a new level of intimacy and confession as he sings "Sometimes I get a little lost, a little lost along the way", and as he tells the band to "bring it down slow, fellas ...". My only complaint is that it all goes by too fast. At this price you can't lose!

5 out of 5 stars Al's Best Gospel CD.......2002-05-03

This gospel CD is absolutely Al's best, in my opinion. I believe I have listented to and purchased every CD by Al Green, since I really enjoy his music. What makes this one so great, in my mind, are two things. #1: Willie Mitchell produced this gospel CD, so it has the rich harmonies of his earlier RB classics like "Let's Stay Together" and "Take Me to the River", etc., etc. To my knowledge, it's the only gospel CD Willie Mitchell produced. The difference is striking. #2: It features almost all of the songs as original Al Green compositions. Al's spirituality is so moving and supportive, it is inspiring. You can tell he's singing from the heart about things he's gone through and triumphed over thanks to Jesus. If you like his earlier RB sound, and love the Lord, you will love this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Wait!.......2001-11-27

This hard-to-find CD is worth the wait - it moves me whether I'm in my car or in my kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars Buy Green Now!.......2000-03-31

This Green album is warm and bouncy. The tracks flow and have a personal electricity that exudes from Al's soul. Other great ones are One in A Million, Soul Survivor, Belle, and Higher Plane.

The tunes in John Playford's The English Dancing Master have been recorded frequently and are a staple in English country dance circles. Jeremy Barlow and the Broadside Band present here some of the best renditions of these tunes that are currently available on CD. I strongly recommmed this CD for anyone interested in Renaissance music, country dance music, or just plain ole' fun music.
