Editorial Reviews

Firecracker picks up right where Loeb's 1995 debut Tails left off, mixing relentlessly upbeat pop numbers with moody ballads tied together with her innate sense for a memorable melody. Firecracker starts particularly strong: A thumping bass line propels the rhythmic "I Do," lush string arrangements swoon behind "Falling in Love," "Truthfully" posesses the same kind of simple pop grace that made her 1994 song "Stay" a huge hit, and "Let's Forget About It" is probably the most instantly catchy song of the bunch. The rest of the record doesn't quite keep up that pace, but overall Firecracker shows Loeb clearly avoiding the "sophomore slump" curse. --Peter Blackstock

When Winnipeg's Wailin' Jennys recorded their debut disc, 40 Days, back in 2004, their enthusiastic fan base--cultivated in part by significant airplay from CBC Radio One--provided the young group with a fast track to fame. Their fans' praise came first, critical acclaim arrived shortly thereafter, and a 2005 Juno for Best Roots & Traditional album soon followed. Surprisingly, as opportunities arose, founding member Cara Luft left the band, expediently replaced by Annabelle Chvostek. Thankfully, the Jennys' sound is none the worse for wear, even stronger in the respect that Chvostek's deft fiddle and mandolin playing helps to further uplift their melodies, while her warm alto adds a nice touch to the three part harmonies.

On this sophomore release, founding members Nicky Mehta and Ruth Moody continue in the tradition of writing songs independently, with each songwriter taking the lead on her own tracks. Moody seems to have the strongest songwriting sense: Listening to "Things That You Know" and "This Heart Of Mine" makes one yearn to hear the Dixie Chicks cover these tracks with the vocal strength and three-part power that the Wailin' girls do not have… yet. With a country edge and a Celtic lilt, Firecracker is an enjoyable listen, but those looking for edgy, O Brother-style country and alt-folk might find a better fit seeking out Gillian Welch or the Be Good Tanyas. Roots fans looking to dip their toes into easy listening-style acoustic music, however, will find this to be a fine fit. --Denise Sheppard

5 out of 5 stars FIRECRACKER.......2007-07-05

This is a wonderful record.

The Jennys have an otherwordly ability to harmonize. Their voices weave beautifully together. I really hope this record gets the recognizition and air play it deserves. Standout tracks are Glory Bound, Starlight, This Heart Of Mine and Things That You Know, but ALL of the songs shine.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Albums I've Heard in a While!.......2007-05-25

Usually, when I purchase a CD, there are a couple of songs that I skip whenever I listen to it. Not this one. Every single song is highly enjoyable. Lovely lyrics, beautiful harmony vocals, quality musicianship -- Firecracker has it all.

4 out of 5 stars Certainly not perfect, but has its moments.......2005-09-16

Being "too young" to really follow that much music when this was out in 1995, it was like seven years later that I finally got to hear this band. And for almost three years, the only song I knew from them was "I Got a Girl". My friend got me into this band through this and "Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb". Not a bad album by any means, but the latter is certainly a better album.

I hate to say this about an artist I like a lot, but about half of the songs sound like they were required to be made by the record label. Additionally, it's a somewhat unfocused album, with songs like "Same Dress, New Day" and "Trip Along" which both don't fit well in the context and are a bit dated. Additionally there's a lot of stuff that you'll try to get yourself into rather than actually enjoy.

But why exactly is this a four-star album to me? Well, there are its fair share of pretty good tracks, and the bad could be a whole lot worse. But it's somewhat listenable, even. Originally I would have just given it three stars, but "Prick" is enough of a reason to buy the album. Nine minutes long and the closest thing to metal they've ever done, it's great. Still, they don't sacrifice the generally happy tone that's usually in Tim Delaughter's songs. It's the part after the guitar solo that I love so much, although this is a reason that some may miss the guitarist, Wes. He had a Billy Corgan-type quality to playing the guitar and this was his "Cherub Rock".

One other good thing here is some of the lyrics, like the melodic "Motivation". Elsewhere, "I Got a Girl", which you've probably heard, is really clever and still has not gotten old. Even if I wish people could acknowledge more from the band. I sort of like "Rocketpop", "Bang", "Piranha", and the catchy-yet-quirky "Raindrop". Also, I particularly enjoy "High", another track that shows the great guitar ability they had and Tim has a Brian Wilson-type falsetto here.

More of its strengths are in the last two tracks than anything else, and unfortunately there are a lot of tracks that are barely above average. I think I'd recommend "Jesus" over this if you like the Polyphonic Spree and would like to hear what Tim did in Tripping Daisy. However, for what it's worth, it's a nice blend of psychedelic and punk-pop with occasional other things.

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Meets Harmony.......2005-03-07

Tripping Daisy was one of the more unique and original bands to come out of the 90s. I happened to pick up the CD in 1996 and it's been a cherished item in my collection since then.

The highlight of this CD for me has to be the track 'Prick'. An epic nine minute rock saga that covers the rage and sorrow of watching a brother wasting his life on drugs, the lyrics are backed up by screaming guitar riffs and a hard core drum beat that smashes relentlessly into the track.

Unfortunately the band's career was cut short by the death of the their guitarist Wes Berggren in 1999 at the age of 28.

For a glimpse of a band that had all the potential genius but none of the breaks, you can't go past "I am an Elastic Firecrack"

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2005-01-25

This album sits right in the middle of my top ten albums of all time. Musically, the guitar playing, drumming, and vocals are all top notch and give you plenty to aspire towards. While at times some of the guitar lines are nothing technically amazing, they are creative and fit perfectly with the song. The drumming is the gem on this album and I love every minute of it. The vocals are uniquely Tripping Daisy's own and make this band stand out from the crowd.

Part pop, part hard rock, and mostly a perfect blend of the two, this album provides you with enough types of sound to keep you interested, but keeps them woven together so that it does not sound out of place.

"I Got a Girl" is of course the "hit" from the album, and by all means is the only reason I heard of this band in the first place. But I must say, "I Got a Girl" is the worst song on the album even though it has its moments instrumentally speaking. My favorites are "Motivation" - much quiter than most songs on the album but just beautiful in every way, "Step Behind" - very fun catchy song, but unique in its structure/arrangment, "Prick" - long prog rock style song with sick guitar riffs and some of the most amazing drumming on the album, and "High" - a nice peaceful song with some beautiful guitar lines which I have been told, although cannot confirm, was not originally a song to be on the album, but just a bit of a jam in the studio that was caught on tape, who knows (the lyrics to this song are the only ones missing in the album notes)?

That being said, every song is worth listening to and I have played this album start to finish in entirety hundreds of times. Other Tripping Daisy albums are good and worth listening to, but none of them capture the mix of hard rock, pop, and psychedelic sounds like this one does.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2004-08-31

I'm buying this album again, because my sister lost mine. I bought this when it first came out and listened to it non-stop for a long time. It's one of the very few albums that I can listen to all the way through and not skip songs. I love it!

5 out of 5 stars their best album.......2004-07-25

if your new to tripping daisy, then this is the album you should probably start with, its the most common of all the tripping daisy albums, you can probably find it at most used cd stores, and it is the most popular. don't let the popularity of the single "I Got a Girl" make you think the rest of the album is just like it. each of the songs have their own character and feel to them. it mixes their early hardcore rock from Bill, with their latter psychedelic rock from Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb, making it their best album, and the one that defines who tripping daisy really is. my personal favorite is "Motivation", a song i think is genius, as well as the song "Piranha", which is the ultimate tripping daisy song, that adds all of the their styles into one really good and catchy song. I am an Elastic Firecracker is an album you should defintley look into, if not buy, and start your way into the realm of tripping daisy

5 out of 5 stars "Your life is built on accidents - like meeting me...".......2006-05-16

Lisa Loeb's second album, Firecracker has 12 great tracks but some of the songs took awhile to grow on me but songs I loved right away include: Falling in Love, Jake, I Do, Let's Forget About It, Truthfully, Furious Rose,This and How. Loeb has a beautiful and rich voice, her lyrics are poetic and haunting. From the song Falling in Love, "The gray sky was romantic 'cause he was holding her hand, he was her man, the time between meeting and finally leaving is sometimes called falling in love." The title-track gives me the chills, the chorus is amazing. Truthfully is such a gentle and sweet song, so much better than I thought it was, "You showed up with your parachute..." If you like deep, meaningful, and poetry-like lyrics then Firecracker is for you.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favs.......2004-03-29

I'm gonna be quick about this. This is one of the best CDs I've ever purchased. I have never found myself wanting to skip a single song on this CD. I find myself singing these songs all the time. The best part about this album is that it goes from the boppy "I Do" to the soulfull "Jake" and never misses a beat. I listen to this CD at work anytime I have a hectic day. Lisa sings to me and it just soothes me. I suggest this for most anyone. Great CD!

4 out of 5 stars FIRECRACKER.......2004-03-19

I don't know of a more beautiful song than Lisa Loeb's 'How'. It is perfect, brilliant and captivating. I love every inch of it. "Firecracker" is Lisa's second album and it does a great job. Some of the songs I don't see fit for this album but most of the songs do the CD justice. I love Lisa's vocals and acoustic sound. The opener 'I Do' is also an amazing song, especially for an opener.

3 out of 5 stars wrong choice.......2004-03-07

I bought this album and also TAILS on the strength of the reviews included on the page. Wrong choice ! I also gave Lisa a chance because of her new Dweezil & Lisa cooking show and I thought she seemed perky & cute and felt that she probably had music nice to listen to.First .. her albums are not for the over 50 crowd, which I belong to. Second .. every song seemed to be filled with pessimism and doubt and other depressing themes. The tunes were for the most part pleasant. Change the lyrics Lisa ! We all wanna be happy not saddened.

5 out of 5 stars a great cd.......2003-06-12

this is a great cd. every single song on this cd is great.
it is nothing like her last album (tails). this is much
more thought out with some great lyrics that actually
convey some type of emotion without being too sappy. go
out and buy this album as it is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2004-01-11

Jonathon Ford was made known to me by his awesome bass-playing and screaming in the now legendary Roadside Monument. I heard that he had worked on an instrumental album with Dave Bazan and I was very interested. I was told by others that the album was mediocre so I never purchased it. Several years later I saw Unwed Sailor at Cornerstone and the whole thing just blew my mind. I bought the EP and it is one of my favorite albums even though it's only about 12 minutes!

Jonathon Ford deserves respect for his work in Roadside Monument, Unwed Sailor, Circle of Birds and even his playing on Pedro the Lion's "It's Hard to Find a Friend". If Ford's name is on it I will buy it.

The "Firecracker" EP is exceptional from the first note to the last. The music has the awesome balance of being motivational while also very peaceful. I believe that "Ruby's Wishes" is one of my top 20 songs ever recorded. No joke. Dave Bazan's drumming is raw and powerful. The production is also rich and very warm.

Just put it on and feel the glory.

1 out of 5 stars Does not age well.......2003-08-23

Maybe three years ago I might've recommended this four-song EP, but with The Faithful Anchor and Marionette out there, skip it. Johnathon Ford has done much better since this little experiment.

5 out of 5 stars sweet euphoria.......2002-11-19

this is the best(or close to it) instrumental ep. johnathon ford of roadside monument and many other great bands teams up with dave bazan and picks up a guitarist to create some sweet instrumental tracks. check it out yo.

4 out of 5 stars this is necessary for any music collection.......2002-04-30

this cd is beatifully done. i saw them open up for pedro the lion at cornerstone a few years ago and this is the ep they had for sale. i have waited for another release from them since that time...unfortunately, amazon does not carry their full-length (put out by lovesick recordings). the guitar lines are really clean (most of the time) and the work on the bass is wonderful. the bass and guitar work wonderfully well together and the the music maintains a really dynamic feel throughout. the album has a somewhat raw drum sound that only adds to the entire sound. it makes it more accessible.
the only reason i give this ep a 4-star review is because they become even better on the full-length album. also, if you get a chance to see them live i highly recommend it. they don't need words to express their feelings - the music does it for them. but just in case that isn't enough, jonathan ford invites people to talk after the show, he really wants to make a connection with people. but don't worry, even if you never talk to him you will know his personality thru the music.

OK, well to start things off i have been a T-Bo fan since i heard him on C-Murders cd and the S.C.C. stuff on mp3.com. I have been waiting for this cd forever and ordered it online because i cant fidn it in stores around here. With no reviews to read i didnt get any advice on this cd. I saw this 5 star review after i bought it and i thought that was the worst review ever, sorry but this isnt a 5 star album. What this album lacks severly is a strong chorus in the songs and in some songs the beats are bad also. Almost every chorus makes me not like the song its on. This album shows T-Bo's average get rowdy voice and style which i love but his chorus choices are just completely whack. Some songs are good and a couple of songs are old songs from S.C.C. Third World Compilations. This is just an average cd, i would buy Third World Compilations 1 and 2 before this just because that T-Bo is all over those cds and they're a LOT better. Plus u get to hear everything that S.C.C. has to offer.

3 out of 5 stars I Am Left Wanting More.......2005-04-28

This band churns out competant roots rock along the vein of Pennsylvania band Frog Holler...lots of start-stop rhythms, occasional forays into lite bluegrass, and The Old 97s...clean production/slightly rough hewn performance.

There is nothing particularly new or noteworthy going on here. Whomever handes the bulk of the vocals has a nice silky smooth, somewhat fey, voice, which he only occasionally injects with feeling.

More energy and better vocals would definitely help. The CD doesn't really take off until the sixth track, the excellent Boy Most Likely. Other highlights are Hey Amy, Box of Hearts and too short So Long Lorraine.

Overall, a satisfying CD, but not more. Definitely not five stars!

    5 out of 5 stars Isn't it always about a girl?.......2005-04-13

Amy. Caroline. Lorraine. And the ten other unnamed women who variously broke the singer's heart, left without looking back, or (worst of all) left and came back -- this is the sun that Planet Firecracker orbits. it's a cliché that all songs are about love, yet Firecracker's deft writing -- the entire band is credited as songwriters, so who am I to speculate where the lyrics come from -- manages to elude triteness and ring graceful new changes on the age-old country themes.

It's good to start with the writing, because unless you're Oasis you can't turn lead into gold. The better news is that the songs are well-served by the musical setting. The band is tight and ferocious without being undisciplined. Listen to the way "Hey, Amy" or "(I'm Sorry) Caroline" build to climaxes all the more powerful for their restraint. You can tell there's more there, held back.

Underneath the pedal steels and Hammond organs there's a solid rock pulse that keeps the songs from getting soggy in their country affect. Peter Craft's drums and Gardner May's bass are locked tight and provide propulsion for Dave Strahan's skirling guitar solos and Russ Tillitt's honky-tonk piano. Again, all competent bands can play guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards, but Firecracker's sound is expanded nicely by pedal steel, mellotron, banjo, and especially Scout's acoustic guitar -- always present and adding a solid rhythmic anchor and a warmth to their sound.

Speaking of Scout, he should insure his voice: it's a great country-rock instrument, soaring and lyrical, with the slight catch that puts songs like "Without Even Trying" or "Valley of the Moon" over the top where they belong. Hey bartender, another round! Russ' and Dave's backing vocals fit smoothly around his lead, apparently effortlessly.

In fact the whole record sounds so easy and effortless you'd never know from listening that this is the first full-length album, recorded locally in San Francisco. There's a nice gloss to the production that's not too sweet but suits the tartness of the songs. All in all, "So Long Someday" bears up very well to repeated listening, from quietly grooving to "Boy Most Likely" at work to howling along with "Box of Hearts" in the car. An auspicious and most welcome debut.

This record is fabulous. Promising has one of the catchiest guitar riffs I've ever heard, destined to play itself in your head for days afterwards. I wouldn't be surprised if Mississippi River and I'm Sorry Caroline get stuck in there as well. Without Even Trying, however, is my favorite song on the record. It achingly describes the wish that everything could be just a little bit different.

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing mix of pop and alt-country.......2005-04-02

I bought this record after hearing about Firecracker through some friends, and was truly impressed. Their EP from a few years ago was interesting, but nowhere near the top form of this album. The obscure Rhett Miller tune was one of the best, although the band does a great job on everything from pop rock to country swing.

5 out of 5 stars If Wilco and Old 97s had a baby + Ryan Adams spanked its ass.......2005-03-18

Pre-Gap Ryan Adams? Being There-era Wilco? Following the same arc as Old 97's?

Like the Old 97's, this band, a former member of the neo-alt-country movement of the late 90s, has burgeoned from its roots rock past to form a sound that is unique, yet comfortably familiar at the same time. Gracious hooks, minimal, but just enough studio trickery, a crackled voice always on the verge of being swallowed by its own emotion, and an oh-so-sweet trickle of piano.

And Damn! The song penned by good ol' Rhett Miller is not even the best song on the CD (sorry Rhett, you can always fall back on your looks). Nope, the best tracks are Mississippi River (with that simple yet tingly banjo), (I'm Sorry) Caroline, and Promising.
