Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This collection contains many of Gates' most poignant songwriting moments, including some of his hit songs with Bread, much of his released solo material, and several newer recordings. With poetic string arrangements, distinctive and effortlessly mercurial vocals and trademark soppiness aplenty, Gates ensures his songs have an evergreen romantic quality. Indefatigable sentimentalists will weep with joy at this collection, but there are some golden moments here that everyone should hear. Warner Brothers. 2002.

5 out of 5 stars David Gates Songbook.......2007-04-10

I was excited to see that there are 5 new songs on this project, one of them "Find Me" may be the best of all of the beautiful music, lyricly and musically that David has blessed us with. Anyone who has enjoyed his work with Bread and followed his solo projects should love to have this in their collection.

~~~~
Whenever I've had a stress filled day.(No Beer in the Fridge,etc)
This is the CD I put on to calm my jaded senses and frazzled nerves.
A lot of these songs have been covered by other artists but
Mr Gates's versions are the only ones that work for me.
My title refers to the new material which I'd never heard before.
My two standout favourites are:~
The Guitar Man~this is one of my personal all time favourite songs.
Aubrey~ just a beautiful song.
Do YOUR jaded senses and frazzled nerves a favour and buy this CD!
5 out of 5 stars Great Music from the Master Of Soft Rock.......2006-06-29
Well, I am, I believe, David Gates # 1 Fan - but I know there are thousands more like me out there, even now. The previous reviewers have very nicely discussed the 5 new recordings here - the best being I Can't Play The Songs, although Find Me was the single. So, to get the new songs out there, we get a compilation of 10 key Bread tracks and a measly 5 DG solo classics. There are more new songs available too, like "Love And Bide" that David has done in concert over the last 10 years. It's a wonderful collection, but as others have already said, why can't we get some David Gates solo hits like Clouds and Took the Last Train and Where Does The Lovin Go ? Make it a DAVID GATES album - the Bread tracks (perfect as they are) have been on CD 10 different ways already. WEA / Rhino - please release Gates' solo material 1973-1981, now that you've done almost all the Bread albums and a great 2 CD compilation. And come on.... Bread's Lost Without Your Love ! (never on CD anywhere ever). I would give everything I own (well, not my CD of Baby I'm-a Want You). Maybe the Wounded Bird label will come to the rescue. There has never been a David Gates solo CD of his 70's material released in the USA.... Anyway, I digress...
P.S. - I was greatly amused by the punk who complained that we Bread fans were the same ones who later listened to Barry Manilow, Little River Band, etc. - Damn Right ! and proud of it... I also listen to Led Zeppelin, Charlie Parker, Bob Marley, Bonnie Raitt, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Beach Boys.......GOOD MUSIC.
4 out of 5 stars Good Overview of a Hit-Making Career.......2005-09-17
This CD consists of 15 previously released songs by David Gates (10 from his Bread days, 5 from his solo career), and 5 previously unreleased songs from his solo career - (although "Love Is Always Seventeen" has appeared in a slightly different edit on his 1994 CD of that title). This is a very good attempt at a career-spanning summary, although it may be of most interest to completists who want all of David Gates' output since 75% of it consists of previously released material. All-in-all, a good quality CD for fans of the easy listening songs of David Gates. (For fans of Bread, you might also check out some of James Griffin's solo and collaborative output - "Breakin' Up Is Easy", "Griffin & Sylvester", and his work with The Remingtons and Black Tie.)
3 out of 5 stars Good Compilation Diminished by a Criminal Oversight.......2005-09-12
There's a few pages missing from this 'songbook'; while a good overview of David Gates' work in both Bread and on his own, any compilation with his name prominently displayed that does NOT include the impossibly seductive, absolutely unforgettable "Took The Last Train (To St. Tropez)" cannot lay claim to being complete - period, atypical or not. That breezy, midtempo song with a tear in its eye (a modest hit in 1978 following up "The Goodbye Girl", from the album of the same name) features one of THE most affecting sax hooks ever written.....
