This Boulder, Colorado, quintet does many things well, but nothing great. This double-CD set, culled from 13 different performances, shows off their breadth as they move from electro-bluegrass to fusion to funk to prog-rock like kiddies in a toy store. While they certainly have the chops to pull it off, they wind up playing away from their strengths too often. Everything from bluegrass stomps like "Shenandoah Breakdown" and Jimmy Martin's "Hold What You've Got" to jazz staples made famous by Dave Brubeck, Weather Report, and Miles Davis, to the Meters' "Hey Pocky Way" is fair game. There's an infectious energy and a lively experimental spirit at work, and their stylistic range keeps things interesting to say the least--especially over the course of a long live set. But without a bit more focus and some more compelling originals, there are too many low points to suffer through, especially for those of us listening at home without benefit of the live vibe. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars cello lover.......2007-05-31

Absoluty the best. It is no wonder she was the world premier cello artist!! Can't say enough. If you love cello, and classical music, this is a must have. Her whole collection is worth every penny!!!

5 out of 5 stars 99% perspiration.......2006-11-08

(4.5/5 stars) This is a two-disc collection of musical works, in which the great cellist Jacqueline du Pre plays. The first disc consists of three cello concerti by three different composers: Dvorak (Romantic), Haydn (Classical) and Elgar (Romantic). Very good music, though it might leave you wondering what all the fuss is about. Not to worry: just pop in Disc Two to find out. The second disc contains shorter works by a wider variety of composers. It also might just leave you breathless by its beauty. Saint-Säens' "The Swan" (from "Carnival of the Animals") is nearly indescribable in its elegance, with du Pre's cello dancing with a harp. This haunting recording should not be missed. Bruch's "Kol Nidrei" is magnificently gorgeous as well. Three fantasy pieces from Schumann, one of Mendelssohn's "Lieder Ohne Wörter" and a stunning Brahms sonata infuse this collection with genuine grace. Since these were recorded prior to the advent of digital recordings, you might hear a very slight hiss on some of the recordings. This is barely audible and really does not detract from the pleasure of listening to it. Each disc runs 75 minutes, making this inspiration last long indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Immortal Legend.......2006-10-07

As a cellist, I grew up listening to Jacqueline Du Pre's recordings. Even now as a 35 year old, I'm still enthralled by her amazing talent. This is a great cd if one is looking for a wonderful introduction to this superb cellist or simply wants to savor her most well known recordings. Du Pre owned the "Elgar" concerto. No other words can summarize this fact. Other beautiful and moving pieces are here on this disc: Bruch "Kol Nidrei", Haydn "Concerto No.2", Faure "Elegie", Brahms "Concerto No.2". The cello is a difficult instrument to play due to the strength required in both hands. Du Pre's playing touches the heartstrings with both emotion and depth. The tone that she coaxes from her cello is amazing. Jacqueline Du Pre is a legend.

5 out of 5 stars Epitome of Cello.......2006-06-23

As a cellist, I absolutely love du Pré's work. I actually found this CD when I was looking for a modern recording of "A Jacqueline du Pré Recital", a record compiled of pieces done between July 15, 1962 and April 1, 1969. The second CD in this set contains the same songs as that record.

The concertos on the first CD are spectacular, especially her rendition of the Elgar concerto which has defined the piece since she first performed it. The second CD, however, is just as wonderful as a collection of some of the most loved cello pieces. No cello recording complete without Saint Saen's "The Swan" and du Pré's version is the only one I've ever heard that I actually like. "Elégie in C minor" (composed by Gabriel Fauré) is one of my personal favorites especially since her rapport with the pianist is obvious and the two instruments blend in a way that makes the piece even more poignant.

Overall, this CD is a must-have for anyone who loves cello as a perfect sample of Jacqueline du Pré's work.

5 out of 5 stars Ooo! Samples!.......2005-11-29

As far as the romantic period goes, Jacqueline Du Pre is my personal favorite 'cellist. Her sensitivity to put expression of the musical idea always outweighed the desire to appear impressive. There is a difference in being just a virtuoso and being a musician. A virtuoso has the capability to dazzle and amaze, but music is more than just being impressive, and Du Pre succeeds in becoming, in every sense, a musician first and foremost. The only complaint I have of this album is the fact that you only get one movement of each piece! Even so, this a wonderful "sample dish" of Du Pre's extraordinary playing, mainly meant to get you hooked so you can get more.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cd .......2007-06-08

This Cd really gives you a taste of live String Cheese Incident. The songs are great and the communication between the band is outstanding. I would highly recommend this Cd for any one who loves the String Cheese Incident or is curious to get a taste.

4 out of 5 stars Good Live Stuff........2003-07-03

String Cheese has a thick, lush sound. True, this may not be the best live String Cheese release. But it's still a darn fine record and their sound really shows through--personal favorites of mine include the instrumental "Birdland", "Don't Say" (infinitely singalong-able), and "Mauna Bowa", a great instrumental which is probably my favorite track on the record. One of the few things I don't like about this record is the fact that it's a compilation of different shows rather than a single one, which makes the improvised transition jams seem somewhat disjointed.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for SCI fans.......2002-07-18

I've enjoyed the sounds of SCI for a couple of years now, and have found this cd to be one of my favorites. Like most jam bands, SCI works best on a live basis and their energy and excitement is really felt through the tracks of this cd. I love how both bluegrass and funk intertwine within the different tracks--with this cd you get a taste of everything and a real feel for the band's true talent on the stage! Although a popular cover, SCI's version of the classic jazz theme "Take Five" is one of my favorite cuts off this album. It sounds different everytime you listen to it. "Jellyfish" and "Texas" are also always enjoyable, and I think the boys do a mean cover of the traditional "Shenandoah Breakdown." Kang is crazy on the mandolin! They also do total justice to Arthur Neville's, "Hey Pocky Way," with a wicked jam in there too. If you ever get the chance, see these guys in concert! They always promise an unforgetable show!

5 out of 5 stars in the defense of Billy.......2002-02-04

unlike the above, I found the SCI release of Carnival 99 to be very fullfilling, enough so to go buy the rest of there titles. The release is best approached from a very simple stand point, the music is fun. Its not a prolific, standard shattering release, its just some songs that display the groups diverse ability and taste, both in covers, and there original works. You'll find a song that really sticks out, and over time find the rest of the album, to be very new and evolving. And while no recording will ever be able to capture the energy of there live shows, Carnival 99 will give you a taste of a very original, very independant sounding jam bands. Dont approach it as a critic, just listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars If you wanna be FOC*.......2001-12-22

I kept seeing SCI pop-up in Relix and finally decided to take the plunge...

Needless to say from the first track to the last, I was BLOWN away by not only the musicianship, but by the range of styles. I'm an inveterate, died-in-the-wool Deadhead; however, the jam bands today have taken that springboard and leapt into realms that the Dead couldn't capture night-in, night-out. Of all the top tier jam bands today, the Cheese, in my opinion, have firmly grabbed the torch from the Dead. They've got the vibe, the chops and that SOMETHING...

My personal favs are Missing Me>Mona Bowa (very reminscent of Little Feat and the Allmans), Hey Pocky Way, Black Clouds (check out the jam in the middle!)and all the jams on Disc 2.

Hardcore FOC will have all kinds of opinions on this disc; if you're new to SCI, you absolutely can't go wrong with this pick. I have all of SCI's studio output but they are truly a live phenomenon - if you haven't been to the real deal, then this is as close as you can get. If you're struggling between the other live disc - A String Cheese Incident - I'd say get this one since it's more in line with their live act today.

Once you've heard it, you're gonna have to see them for real...you won't be disappointed. Better hurry, though. The scene is starting to swell without Phish and the family feel of the experience is going to be gone forever.

5 out of 5 stars Profile of passion.......2000-02-20

I have not yet been in the right place at the right time to see this film but I have followed Nadja's career since she won the Naumberg competition. This is a beautiful and lovingly compiled profile of her life in music, as selected from her recording history to date (not included is the astonishing recent album of gypsy music with the Assad Brothers). I knew that the creators of this soundtrack had a spiritual affinity with their subject when I saw the Souvenir de Florence second movement selection, the Sibelius second movement, the Shostakovich Burlesque and the Rachmaninov vocalise - pieces that capture the Nadja that has always captured me. Indeed, for us long-time fans, and for anyone, this is a wonderful souvenir album of one of the most soul-possessing fiddlers of our time.

5 out of 5 stars Nadja - breakthrough artist.......1999-12-30

The picture on this album cover is horrible... gotta say this up front.

Now, if I could only give a one sentence appraisal of both this CD and the documentary, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg is the one person, the one superior artist who is also a "real" person (well, who let us see that), who could possibly reach out and grab the non-classical music enthusiast and make them thirst for classical music, because they will want more of her music.

And, if there were no other reason, I love the album, but then it and the film it stems from are so rich on so many other facets. The music itself is perfect beyond reproach.

For those of us who were never completely classically inclined, like myself, we are presented with a whole person here. Nadja is not stiff and unreachable, but rather, someone who is so very much an "average joe" who loves her family and treasures her friends, perhaps with an extremely heightened awareness that we would all kill for but might kill us if we ever got there without a likewise outlet as she has with her music, but also with a "who you lookin' at" New York accent.

I'd like to see Paola Di Florio's documentary of Nadja, "Speaking in Strings" as required viewing, world-wide. I think then that classical music would have a whole new audience. Not a doubt in my mind.

Until I saw "Speaking in Strings", I thought all classical soloists were people with sticks up their behinds who talked down their noses at everyone else. Shows you what I know.

Her music reduces me to tears, in a way I never thought possible (there's an old phrase that goes -- "This guy not only knows nothing, he don't even suspect nothing").. and that was really honestly me and classical music.

I can't even watch TV now without hearing the violin in the music of shows or commercials and then instantly switching to the stereo to this or another of her albums to hear Nadja, to hear the really good stuff. I want to feel it now, and no longer being fed junk or be a passive observer.

Just my opinion, but we've shortchanged ourselves in what "feeds" us. I never knew it was missing, until I saw this documentary, which led me to buy the album, which now, happily takes me from smiles to tears throughout. So that now I am listening to it all. A whole new world has been opened up to me.

So, I give this album as many stars as there are in the heavens. I've gotten a great gift, and if I go any farther, I'll ruin it with words.

Thank you Paola and Nadja for taking the time, the caring, and to Nadja especially for letting us so deeply into her life to make sure we "got it."

Nadja, I "got it", and I now totally believe that line in the film where you say that great moments we all have are fleeting and they are only good if you "share it." You sure have shared it. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo Nadja!.......1999-10-23

Saw the film...now have the album...love both. She's an inspiration to all of us who live in the fast lane...both emotionally and professionally... Allegro Vivace Con Mucho Brio!

PS: Per the previous reviewers comment, in the days of Mozart/Beethoven, etc., it was quite customary to perform sections of long-form works independently when playing concerts...which just confirms by example that there's nothing "wrong" or low-brow about doing it now, either in concert or on a recording.

4 out of 5 stars Bits and pieces winningly played.......1999-10-07

The EMI release of (72435 56908-2) is subtitled "A Musical Companion to the Film." So I assume the music herein is not from the film but a sampling that represents, as the soloist is quoted as saying, "the variety and growth of my musical life so far." The writer is Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and the film is to be about her life as an artist. But none of that need concern us here. As a rule I object to movements being played out of the context of the work from which they come--e.g., the Adagio movement of the Sibelius Violin Concerto--but in this case the opening selection, Saint-Saens "The Swan," was so winningly played that I found myself liking this program very much indeed. Other composers represented here are listed above in this website. The artist is given more than adequate assistance from several pianists, chamber players, and the London Symphony Orchestra, making me suspect the selections are drawn from earlier recordings. Nevertheless, for those who like violin music in general and do not care if you hear an entire composition or just part of one, or for those who simply admire this artist, I can recommend this CD.

This isn't everyday music (at least not for most people). It's a bit eccentric. But if you're familiar with Arnold's style and other work and enjoy it, then you'll likely enjoy this collection.

This is a very interesting compilation. Andrew Davis turns in a sprightly performance of the perennially fresh Fifth Symphony, but the real novelty is the reissue of the cantata The American Flag, which Dvorák wrote in honor of his taking up the position of director of the American Conservatory in New York. It's an entertaining occasional piece and this is its only recording. At budget price, this is a terrific deal. --David Hurwitz

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Dvorak, by Jingo!.......2004-02-13

While it takes up less than a third of the time on this generously filled CD, Dvorak's "American Flag" is more than worth the price of admission--especially in so delicious a reading as that afforded by Michael Tilson Thomas and company. As part of his duties at the National Conservatory of Music in New York, Dvorak was roped into composing a cantata based on a jingoistic poem about the Star Spangled You-Know-What written early in the 19th century by Joseph Rodman Drake. Apparently, Dvorak was a bit queasy about the project, fiddling with the score even after it was published in 1895.

Like all occasional pieces, it may not have moved him to write another "Te Deum" (and if you don't know this marvelous work of Dvorak, get to know it right away!), but "The American Flag" is nonetheless a work of great charm, full of those big-hearted melodies the Czech composer is so famous for. There are stirring choruses, a wonderfully schmaltzy obbligato part for the harp, a fine little military march, and "addresses" to the flag issued by the tenor and baritone soloists portraying American military men. Plus a razzle-dazzle "apotheosis" complete with a bumptious coda that will remind folks of a certain age of the old J-E-L-L-O jingle! Wait till you hear the jolly, galloping solo Dvorak pens for the cavalry man--jolly despite its blood-thirsty paean to "gory sabres" like "shoots of flame on midnight's pall." By turns naïve and heartfelt, as with some of Dvorak's best music, "The American Flag" is wonderfully entertaining, and the singers have great fun with their solos. Michael Tilson Thomas obviously had fun with the whole project. I guarantee you will too!

Zubin Mehta's "Carnival" Overture is OK but undistinguished; however, Andrew Davis's performance of the Symphony No. 5 is a fine one, with the youthful swagger this work requires and with sturdy playing from the Philharmonia Orchestra. There might be finer recordings around, but hardly at this price. So even if you have the Fifth Symphony in your collection, duplicate it! If you love Dvorak, you won't want to miss "The American Flag."

        Album Description

All works written & arranged by the legendary saxophonist, Sigurd Rascher. This is a CD paying tribute to the accomplishments of Sigurd Rascher through a recording by his last student, Styliani. This recording aims in capturing the spirit of Sigurd Rascher's repertoire and honoring his efforts in successfully making the saxophone know to many celebrated composers who wrote works for Rascher that the saxophone too is an orchestral instrument-sticking to the inventors original intentions of his instrument of 1840.

4 out of 5 stars 20 Hours of Dvorak at a Bargain Price.......2004-08-03

This 17-CD set collects together in one box all the published orchestral works of Antonin Dvorak. It's neatly done: each CD is in a paper envelope and there is a 51-page booklet (with knowledgable and helpful notes for each disc) all fitted into a cardboard box no thicker than that ordinarily used for a two-CD opera recording. All this music has been issued previously on separate discs or sets by Naxos and most of it is, if I'm not mistaken, still available that way. But this collection is one easy way to scoop up all of Dvorak's orchestral music at once. There is much music here that is almost never heard, certainly not in the concert hall and even on CD. For instance, I cannot recall ever seeing a recording (and I know I've never heard in performance) Dvorak's 'Intermezzi.' And the rarely-heard 'Legends' are nicely done here by Stephen Gunzenhauser and the Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra. Of course, the name of the orchestra tells you something: some of these performances were recorded before the breakup of Czechoslovakia into Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Yes, some of the recordings go back to the late 1980s. No matter - the sound is quite acceptable throughout.

There are numerous participants in these recordings, many of them orchestras in the Czecho-Slovak area, as well as the Polish National Radio Orchestra, the Russian Philharmonic and even London's Royal Philharmonic (in a smashing performance, with Maria Kliegel, sure one of our best current cellists, in the Cello Concerto). Conductors include Gunzenhauser, Antoni Wit, Camilla Kolchinsky, Dmitry Yablonsky, Michael Halasz, Zdenek Kosler, Libor Pesek, and Robert Stankovksy.

Obviously one wouldn't buy this set for the most familiar Dvorak pieces - the 'New World' Symphony, the Cello Concerto, the Slavonic Dances - if that was all one was interested in. There are too many fine performances of those already on the market. But how many of you have recordings of poorly known but top-drawer works like the 'Czech Suite,' the 'American Suite,' (it is fashionable to dismiss this suite, but it's actually one of Dvorak's best), or some of the orchestral music from his many operas--overtures to 'King and Charcoal Burner,' 'The Jacobin,' 'Kate and the Devil,' 'Rusalka'? All of these, and more, are here. I recently returned from a trip and the only music I took along was this box of Dvorak. I never got sated, or bored, by it.

I was also quite taken by the performance of one of my favorite pieces by Dvorak, his 'Wind Serenade,' here played by the Oslo Philharmonic Wind Soloists. And there are marvelous performances by Gunzenhauser and the Polish NRSO of 'The Noon Witch,' 'The Golden Spinning Wheel,' and (a particular favorite of mine) 'The Wild Dove.'

And then there's the super-bargain Naxos price. This is an easy recommendation for the music lover in the market for this specific collection of music.
