When Shawn Colvin's last album of original material, 1996's A Few Small Repairs, scored Grammys for Song and Record of the Year ("Sunny Came Home"), the singer found herself blessed with pop stardom--and the stifling curse of expectations. Colvin faced two choices: make a U-turn back to the acoustic folksiness of her late-'80s rise to prominence or brave the notoriously shifting currents of musical populism head on. She's chosen the latter tack here, but it often seems like more of a showcase for her longtime songwriting partner and producer, John Leventhal. He frames her lyrics and radiant voice in slick, spacious productions that sometimes make Colvin seem uncomfortably like a session singer on her own album. Whatever fresh emotional insights she offers can't help but seem insulated in that context, making the hard-edged crash metaphors of "Another Plane Went Down," the world-weariness of her collaboration with Edie Brickell, "Roger Wilco," and the haunting "Mr. Levon" sound almost refreshing by contrast. Tellingly, the title track seems like a factory-tooled, hook-laden entry from crossover central--as comfortable and indistinguishable as anything found on either pop or contemporary country radio. Frankly, I Preferred The "Old" You!.......2007-04-04

I have been a fan of Shawn Colvin's music since her first release, Steady On, back in the late 80s. This is the only item in her impressive catalogue that fails to grab me, even after repeated listenings. Without actually looking at the CD booklet, I wouldn't be able to name a single song on it, off the top of my head. This does not mean that the album is bad, by any means, but it is not to my taste. I feel justified in saying that it is certainly not up to the quality of her other work. I recommend instead A Few Small Repairs, which remains her strongest collection. Fortunately, Ms. Colvin's latest release, These Four Walls, is also superb, and represents a return to form.

The songs included on this CD are not only musically great, but thought provoking as well.

Pales In Comparison To A Few Small Repairs..........2005-12-20

A Few Small Repairs had some great songs on there, and a catchy sound to it altogether that made the album very addictive and I loved many of the lyrics. On this album Whole New You it is different, unfortunately. This album is not as powerful as A Few Small Repairs and the songs are not the kind that I push repeat on. They are pleasant, likeable songs but not any that I can honestly praise on or anything. I really do not like these kind of albums because I can't hate them or love them- they're just all right and so is this album. It's just okay and there's not much else to say. The songs are just not that good in sound, like another said they're likeable but with no punch, nothing that makes you remember them- and many are boring.
The strongest song on here is the song Whole New You, that is honestly the only song I like because of its catchiness, next in line would probably be A Matter of Minutes which is sung well and Nothing Like You has a good sound to it- but none of the songs convince me to buy this album. I'll stick with A Few Small Repairs- it's a better buy.

One of a kind..........2005-12-04

Admitted, I am a long-time Colvin fan and was rather shocked at her Grammy wins a few years back.
That being said, I've had this album some 5 years now, and keep coming back to it time and time again.
There is nothing "uneven" or "predictable" about it....in the years since its release I've seen some interesting parallels between the songs and current events...."Roger Wilco" could have been written about our dubious war in Iraq..."Another Plane Went Down" was in constant rotation in my CD player in the aftermath of 9-11. "One Small Year" could best describe my love-life over the past few years....The point is that Shawn is an amazingly gifted songwriter.Her music cuts to the core.
My only hope is that Shawn overcomes whatever personal demons she's been battling of late....five years is way too long to wait for her to produce and share her talents.
But it's always worth the wait.

Not up to the standard of REPAIRS or STEADY ON.......2005-10-30

The warm smooth voice is back..the producer (John Leventhal) is back...the sound (acoustic based pop) is back...the intelligence is back. Why then is WHOLE NEW YOU not the great listen that A FEW SMALL REPAIRS is?

I'm laying blame on the hooks and pacing. Colvin and Leventhal still come up with some intelligent lyrics and interesting observations but the payoff in the chorus isn't always up to snuff. There's nothing here as instantly catchy and lingeringly powerful as "Sunny Came Home" or "Get Out of this House". The title track and "Bound to You" probably come the closest in pop terms, but they can't really equal what Colvin came up with last time out.

Then there's the way this is all laid out. The CD opens with a somewhat bland track ("A Matter of Minutes"), hits you hard with "Whole New You" then backs off again. By far the strongest section comes in the middle (songs 5-8) then you wait until closer "I'll Say I'm Sorry Now" for another highlight. There's just too much filler in between the gems.

HIGHLIGHTS:
The lost souls of "Bonefields" make for an interesting tune. ("There ain't no father/There ain't no mother/There ain't no sister/ain't got no brother/running to no one/running for cover") James Taylor and Marc Cohn provide backing vocals. The piercing imagery in "Another Plane Went Down" is one of the finest lyrics here. ("Five days before Christmas last year/his girlfriend died in a plane crash/He says the way that it happens is your heart is so heavy/it rips away upon impact/And then you just bleed inside/You don't even feel a thing") It's a great stream of consciousness piece where Colvin examines the movies our brains make at night. Edie Brickell collaboration "Roger Wilco" is the tale of a military mission gone wrong. ("In the beginning I believed your objective was well meant/But now I've seen your tactics and your fire in the hole/This entire operation is a mis-appropriation of my soul...") Charlie Sexton adds a great harmony vocal. Stark piano ballad "I'll Say I'm Sorry Now" closes the disc on a high note with Colvin admitting imperfection ("I'm gonna let you down/I know that now/Make you cry/I know I will/Why should you believe I would never leave/or that I love you still?") and acknowledging the unease at the heart of romantic love.

LOWS:
"Mr. Levon" and "Anywhere You Go" are the most disposable tracks here.

BOTTOM LINE:
It's pleasant hummable acoustic based pop. It makes nice background music. There's nothing remarkable about it, though. It's grown on me a bit over the years but I still find it just "O.K."

This cd is really good, i love all the songs. Ariel has always been my favourite disney classic. I only have one problem, the singers arn't the actual singers that were in the films, and thats abit of a dissapointment for me. I would recommend this cd but not to people who actually want to listen to the actual people.

What's best about Disney's animated features, is that they contain amazing orchestral scores and songs. With this CD, one can hear the nuances of the full orchestral scores of 4 of Disney's most popular features, as played and by a full symphony and chorus.

This music, is indeed filled with magic. Your heart soars with every song,your mind flashing the most vivd flashes through your skull. You find that as your heat sings, it already knows all the words. An album, reminding you of the all consuming joy, when you once beleved, in magic.

Great Listening.......2007-01-23

The Kingston Symphony Orchestra (Kingston, Ontario) may not be the NY Philharmonic, but they do a very creditable job of providing wonderful music for easy listening. I was particularly delighted to find orchestral arrangements of these wonderful tunes. I am very glad that I purchased this album and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys this type of music.

The Kingston Symphony Orchestra might not be the very best ensemble in the world (and it shows on this recording), but the lasting power and beauty of the songs on this album and some of the new and lovely arrangements of them are worth the listen. There are some definite technical and musical flaws as far as the recording and ensemble go, but the music and how it's arranged makes up for it.

Three stars for some soaring moments, due to classic tunes and arrangements.

My main beef: Where's The Little Mermaid?? Why discount one of the most beautiful Disney scores ever written?

I own the Hollywood Bowl Gershwin CD and I love it. I was surprised by it. Play the samples if you can but the singing and sound are clear and crisp and you can understand every word.

Yeah looks like it's a great get, if you haven't already got every CD by disney. Didn't know the song You'll be In my Hear was a Tarzan track. Must be a spin off to You'll be in My Heart. Its all good.

Awesome collection!.......2003-10-19

I have to say, that with a 5 year old who is obsessed with the movies that these songs go with, it has made the perfect gift! She spends hours listening to this CD while doing more productive activities than sitting in front of a TV watching the movie. The songs are special to her because of the movies, and she actually does her schoolwork well with these fun songs playing. As a music lover and a Disney lover, we both agree at 5 and 30 that this is a hit.

For adult listeners, the Disney songs sung by "real" singers.......2003-07-22

Trivia Challenge: Included in the 16 tracks on "Disney's Superstar Hits" is the only song from a Disney film to hit #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts. See if you can remember which one it is before I give the answer away at the end. No peaking ahead.

The songs collected on "Disney's Superstar Hits" are mostly from the 1990s; there is "Once Upon a Time in New York City" from way back in 1988 from "Oliver and Company" and a few songs from the 21st century. But the only golden oldie is "Put It Together (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo)," which comes from "Cinderella II" and not the original. The obvious frame of reference would be to see this collection as representing the Disney Renaissance ushered in by the Alan Menken/Howrad Ashman era, which makes it strange that nothing from "Little Mermaid" is included. But the common denominator to this collection is that the songs are not sung by the characters from these films, or, more properly, the people who did the voices for the characters. So instead of Angela Landsbury doing "Beauty and the Beast" it is Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson.

There are several songs from the less than stellar direct to video Disney sequels, such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II," "The Lion King II: Return to Pride Rock," "and "Cinderella II," which would be a minor complaint. But Tina Turner sings one of the songs, so it is hard to complain. In fact, the strength of this collection is indeed the superstar singers. Most of them are blasts from the past such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Sting, Huey Lewis, and Randy Newsman, but there is also new blood such as Christina Aguilera, Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Williams, and even Jennifer Love Hewitt. Peabo Bryson comes out ahead, with the aforementioned "Beauty and the Beast" and another duet, "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle.

This disc is perfect for grown ups, who like the "real" singers singing the best songs from the Disney movies their kids have been dragging them to for the past decade. Vanessa William's "Colors of the Wind" is my personal favorite, although it is hard not to recall the fantastic opening of "The Lion King" when you hear Elton John do "Circle of Life." On the fun side of the ledger I like Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett working their collective ways through "You've Got a Friend in Me" a bit more than Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M's "Hakuna Matata."

Trivia Answer: "A Whole New World" was #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart for one week starting on March 6, 1993. It is the song that replaced Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" after 14 weeks on top.

This is a great CD, but I was kind of disappointed that there weren't more tracks on it. Other than that, you and your kids will be singing along in the car for sure.

I had the pleasure of seeing Trina perfom in an intimate setting and was blown away. Trina has an amazing voice and plays an intense harmonica. Her music has a way of reaching into your soul and truly moving you. I highly recommend seeing her live if you are able, and recommend puchasing this CD, as well as her first release, Alone.

Trina Hamlin is truly the best thing to happen soul music in ages! As said in previous reviews seeing Ms. Hamlin in concert is an acoustic thrill ride you'll never forget. And this disc is the next best thing to her live shows. With her combination of perfection in voice, lyrics, guitar, and harmonica (yes, that's her playing in the beginning of the disc), she's a musical force not to be reckoned with!
