Customer Reviews:
The Real Thing.......2006-11-11
One of my favorite LP's from the late 60's/early 70's was Cochran by Wayne Cochran and the CC Riders. I had discoved them as one of the horn-based bands of the era (BS&T, Chase, Dreams, etc.). I resisted hunting down the earlier recordings, however, because of reviews referencing white soul, comparisons to James Brown, etc. - why spend good money on an imitation?
I finally broke down and bought this CD on the strength of the songs I knew from "Cochran".
Nothing imitation here. This is the Real Deal!
The Unknown R&B Soldier.......2006-03-21
I knew Wayne Cochran by the single Going Back to Miami. Despite no charted on Hot 100, it was airplayed on Costa Rica's first Top 40 radio station back in 1967. Next year a girlfriend honored me with the generic Wayne Cochran vynil for Chess Records which I lost. Those songs are the reason why I kept looking for WC on CD till I found out this Australian release, so what to think...? I dig Wayne's energy on up-tempo songs but the ballads "When My Baby Cries" and "I'm Leaving Up to You" got a pure classic R&B with those musicians there. You see, not all that shine's is gold, but this is gold for those who appreciate such rock and soul or blue eyed soul style.
Rare Find.......2005-10-25
If you have ever seen Wayne Chochran live then you know what an incredible show it was. Unfortunately, it is next to impossible to find any CD recording of his. This complilation, although sonically challenging, is representative of his show. It was very nostalgic for me to hear him once again and it took me back to the El Macombo in Toronto over 30 years ago when I first saw him live. If you are interested in his music buy this - there really is not anything else available. Truly, one of the greatest artists of the era.
Original Blue Eyed Soul.......2005-08-27
A truly 60's soul recording. Cochran's recording of his most famous piece of material , "Last Kiss", is no where close to being the best recording on the CD , but no one sings " Last Kiss " like J Frank Wilson. The selections are some of the best 60's soul music which never got the air play it should have received.
