Those who found a lot to like in the New Radicals' update of '70s and '80s pop-rock for '90s ears may find Tal Bachman's debut similarly appealing. Seemingly inspired as much by the widescreen fantasias of Queen and ELO as by the Beatles, the son of former Bachman-Turner Overdrive head Randy offers a series of well-crafted tunes helmed by himself and superstar producer Bob Rock. Craftsmanship, however, is about the limit of Bachman's vision; his songs rarely rise above clichéd declarations of (and complaints about) love, with pro forma considerations of maturity ("I Wonder") and generational concerns ("Looks Like Rain") failing to lend much weight. With TV producers (Dawson's Creek, Melrose Place) clamoring to use his melodramas on their soundtracks, Bachman may find commercial--if not artistic--success. --Rickey Wright

Entertainment Weekly
The son of Guess Who/BTO axman Randy Bachman makes infectious pop-rock that's closer in spirit to Badfinger than to his dad's blue-collar stomp.

5 out of 5 stars Surprised I loved the album.......2007-07-08

A single song by Tal Bachman was recommended to me. Unable to find the album locally I ordered this album to get the song. While listening I was pleasantly surprised to find that I hadn't bought another 1 song album and liked all the songs.

5 out of 5 stars A late discovery of this late bloomer..........2006-03-20

One night a few weeks ago I heard She's So High on a Sirius station and remembered how much I liked this song, so I made a note of the artist's name. When I found the 1999 album on iTunes, I downloaded it and have completely fallen in love with this artist's music.

Tal's vocals range from strong deep bass to clear, bright highs, with seemingly effortless (and sometimes acrobatic) transitions up and down his entire range. He has a unique, bright, and emotive voice that is very easy to listen to. He's great on guitar, sometimes singing duet with his strums. The arrangements with orchestra (Strong Enough) are almost epic, as well as some very funky arrangements (You Don't Know What It's Like) that really make this album a collection, not 12 songs that all sound the same.

Tal is a storyteller - not just with words, but with his musical arrangements. Climactic crescendos, silent pauses, and lots of emotional punctuation in his vocals. There's some influences of Freddie Mercury / Queen, as well as John Lennon, ELO, Bowie (as noted by many of the reviews).

Much has been said about Tal being a "one hit" overplayed wonder, and I disagree with that. Bachman's debut at 29, after completing his mission, studying Political Philosophy, and starting a family, was pretty late... and the industry doesn't always smile on "late bloomers". I'm thrilled that he persevered and found a new label and released his latest album (Staring Down the Sun).

4 out of 5 stars Glossy hooks throughout.......2005-11-29

"She's So High" got lots of airplay, but sadly limited to the secretary-rock "Lite Hits" stations, it seemed. It's a shame, since Bachman has plenty of hooks to bring to classic rock afficionados.

The album is glossy from start to finish, which you'll either love or hate.

4 out of 5 stars Good solid album.......2005-02-26

I liked "She's so High" when it came out, but I never heard his entire album until today when I borrowed it from a friend. I agree with some of the other reviewers in that it is a good, solid album. Unfortunately Tal seems to have fallen into the same trap that Duncan Sheik and Shawn Mullins fell into. One decent turn of the century hit for an earnest singer/songwriter which got overplayed at radio and overshadowed any possibility of a follow-up hit.

I am not sure I agree with some of the reviewers who seem to think Tal is heavily influenced by ELO. There is some similarity on songs like "Romanticide" and "You're my Everything", but those songs are also reminiscent of Badfinger, and quite logically The Beatles and George Harrison's solo efforts which inspired both ELO and Badfinger. But there is also a Dylan-esque quality to "You Don't Know What It's Like". All-in-all, Tal draws from many different influences and makes them his own. The sign of a true artist.

5 out of 5 stars I generally listen to classical.......2005-01-19

I decided to try out Tal's CD and was pleasently surprised to hear a wonderful combination of dynamic music to meaningful and touching lyrics. She's so high is obviously the most popular in the group, but I found the album very balanced from beginning to end. No fillers, just good well thought-ought music.

Tal's music reminded me alot of ELO musically but the lyrics go beyond what Jeff Lynde ever reached. My hats off to Tal for putting together a wonderful collection of songs. I look forward to new releases. I'll certainly keep my eye out for his next musical adventures.

In Germany nobody knows Tal Bachmann before he start his song "She's so high". Last week he was special guest music-star at the US-soap Melrose Place with this song. You can see: USA is even one step before us. Reason enough to buy one CD more. This one. And I only can say "He is the greatest US-newcomer in this year!" Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Tal Bachman yes!.......2005-10-20

This album is incredible. I simply cannot do it justice as a reviewer because I lack the intelligence and critical skills necessary to give a beautiful take on why this album is fantastic.

Trying to write a review of this album would be like getting a crystal meth influenced Prime Minister Paul Martin to write a poem in Gaellic about what Judith Butler's back looks like, or having 10 clones of Bill Cosby perform neuro-surgery on a Care Bear even though they're just cartoons and/or plush representations of cartoons: these people are just not in a position to effectively accomplish their respective tasks.

It's the same thing with me and this album.

Also, I just read the Koran and it really helped me understand more fully the works of Michael Crichton which in turn helped me develop a greater appreciation of Tal Bachman's artistic work.

In addition to this I also recommend _Congo_ by Michael Crichton, and _The Koran_ by Anonymous.

            2 out of 5 stars repetitive, dissapointed.......2005-08-15

I was ecstatic of Tal Bachman's follow up to his debut. After countless listens to his first album, I still do not find it repetitive or overplayed.
Unfortunately, after just one listen of Staring Down the Sun, this album simply dissapointed me. From the repetitive and predictable distorted guitar riffs to Tal keeping in the lower octaves of his vocals, I was not getting into the music. Not to mention, all of the tracks are overproduced and layered in too many intramental tracks. No ambient nor moving guitar solos here.
I wish Tal would return to displaying his vacal range and the more simple nature of his debut album.

1 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE DISSAPOINTMENT - I READ THE REVIEWS HERE & BOUGHT THIS TO BE UNHAPPILY SURPRISED.......2005-06-27

Tal Bachman/Tal Bachman 1999 album was my favorite album that year. His knack for writing great melodies (I.E. E.L.O., Lennnon/McCartney) shone through. This album lacks everything. Even the production is lacking, sounding odd and unfinished. his voice is also forced on most songs. BAD, BAD album.

5 out of 5 stars King of Bachmania !.......2005-05-26

Tal has the same problem most Canadian musicians have. That being, for some unexplained phenomenon the US doesn't fully embrace music from North of the border.

Give it a try. Tal's sound has been compared to the Beatles & ELO. Although, I would say his music is his own. Very melodic & catchy with a wide appeal across age groups.

5 out of 5 stars You NEEd this CD!.......2004-09-08

Tal Bachman is just one step up from all other artists! I have not yet picked my favorite track because they are all so great! His sound is so unlike anyone around today! IT is so refreshing and unique. Because I could not wait until the US release date, I ordered it from Canada. I am now torn between my love for his original CD and Staring Down the Sun. This CD has something for everyone to love and relate to their personal life.
