After the Jam's Motown covers, the Style Council's appropriation of smooth '70s funk, and solo forays into white soul, what of Studio 150, an album of nothing but covers? It's certainly a brave move, and a mostly successful one, thanks to the eclectic, thoughtful selections and the Weller trademark sound. That's not to say it's just his usual rock style--"The Bottle" is Weller at his funkiest, and "Don't Make Promises" has some commendable Band-esque looseness to it. However Weller succeeds most when he puts a twist on household classics with new, mostly enjoyable arrangements. "Wishing on a Star" is twisted into downbeat nightclub rasp, while Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" becomes a keyboard-heavy jam with arresting gospel vocalists. Similarly, the lesser known songs may well inspire his fans to check out the originals and win himself some new ones along the way; Neil Young's "Birds" is sympathetic to the original--Weller's gruff voice standing in contrast to Young's high tenor of the original. Add to this the general usual excellent musicianship (albeit slightly less guitar that you'd expect) and Weller's always-passionate voice, and you have an album that should appeal to fans of Weller and the original legends alike. --Thom Allott

Big weller fan here- from the jam through the early council years- and of most of his solo output. Even managed to catch him twice in concert. This cover record is a fair offering from weller- a couple of tunes done well and others just going through the motions of stanley road or heavy soul era gruffness. Not essential in anyway but if you get it used it looks nice stacked next to his massive output and makes for a good listen with some track skipping.. Some of the better tunes actually come with the bonus disc- so try to get that one. Otherwise its pretty typical weller-strong muscianship- a steady voice-some blue eyed soul- but hes done it better before. Hes been on a roll the last couple of years- the new ones out in october- lets hope hes learned to stop being himself so much and embraced some new sounds instead of retreading the past. Still he is the modfather so nothing but respect for the woking wonder!

Anyone who has seen Paul Weller live knows that he plays many cover songs. He is a music scholar and evangelist. On Studio 150 he shows that he has the uncanny ability to make any song his own. All the sappiness and over-production of The Carpenters' "Close To You" has been excised leaving the real sentiment of the song behind. Rose Royce's "Wishing On A Star" now seems like a Paul Weller original. Even one of the most over-done songs, Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" sounds fresh. There is not a bad track on this disc (even the bonus 6 track CD is good).

Great arrangements and song choices.......2005-02-13

I could attempt to disect every song on this cd and relate their importance, but I'll skip all of that to say this: put it on and just let it play for days. Paul Weller has chosen some really great songs to cover and gives all of them the justice they're due. Probably his most consistent work in some time. The voice is there: clear, concise, and smooth. He surrounded himself with some really good backing musicians also. But the color layout of the insert makes it difficult to determine who are the contributing artists. A minor discrepancy that is tolerable.

How many do better than the original? At least, one does. Believe it or not, Paul just does it. If you get a chance to listen to Fellin' Alright, you'll be even more convinced. I've seen the guy a dozen times on stage. He really overdoes them all.

How can he be such an enormous talent when all he does is copy off of other people? sorry i just cant see it. I dont think he does justice to Nolan Porter's "If I could only be sure" on the first track at all: If you want to hear some great music listen to the original!!!

He just keeps getting better !.......2005-01-06

Paul Weller may not be a worldwide household name, however those who have had the privelige to experience his music know he is a singer/songwriter of substance. With over 25 years of recording music, he just keeps getting better! This compilation of tracks were put down at Studio 150 in Holland. Weller & Co decided to cross the channel to Holland to enjoy some European flavour whilst recording. Plenty of fun and happy memories came from the trip which certainly shows through the creative song selections. Plenty of songs were experimented, with the best showcased on this album. My wife & I were fortunate to fly to England & attend 2 live performances of the release of Studio 150...It was BRILLIANT ! Paul was mesmerising and hardcore Weller fans would agree that he is at his best when performing live, particularly as he is a perfectionist and always attemps to deliver a first class performance. He has a close knit family which has helped him greatly to achieve his superstar status & shape his extraordinary career. Music is his whole being and he acknowledges it. This is another vintage Weller album...play it again & again...the louder the better. Buy it at any cost...you will love it !!!

Die legendäre Geigerin Erica Morini ist hier in Aufnahmen aus ihrer Glanzzeit zu hören. Insbesondere die Lifewiedergabe des Violinkonzertes von Tschaikowski ist spektakulär:Strawinski äußerte selbst, durch die Vermittlung Morinis sei er 1940 vom Gegner Tschaikowski zum Bewunderer geworden Selbst wenn uns manches an Morinis Spiel heute altertümlich anmutet, spiegelt sich dennoch ausgeprägte Indivdiualität gekoppelt mit Temperament und weiblicher Zartheit darin.Auch die zugegebenen kleinen Stücke sind absolut durchgestaltet, insbesondere am Menuett Mozarts fasziniert die Variabilität der Bogenführung. Für Liebhaber des Violinspiels ein absolutes Muss!
