5 out of 5 stars The most inspiring music I have ever heard. Period........2005-12-17

I own thousands of albums, have a Master's Degree in Music, studied all aspects of Western Music and all I can say is that this album is probably the most inspiring music I have EVER heard. Ever minute of this album a joy. "Prospect" is just a wonderful composition. A legend in the making.....can't wait for the next release!

5 out of 5 stars Accessible AND Edgy Small Jazz/Funk Orchestra Music.......2004-09-23

I stumbled onto this one--what a find. I'd heard Josh Roseman's work with Charlie Hunter ("Right Now Move"), but, frankly, I'm even more impressed by this cat than I am Charlie Hunter! And I'm a big fan of CH.

This second release by Josh Roseman is clear evidence that he's one of the greatest up-and-coming composers and arrangers in jazz. And while I find the slippery-smooth mellow tone of his horn especially pleasing, I am impressed by the fact that he doesn't dominate this set. It's obvious that Roseman is way too smart to let his ego get in the way of his incredible vision.

All of the players here, from the rhythm section on up, are outstanding. This album hints at commercialism at times, but Roseman skillfully sidesteps all of the shlocky trappings of the smooth jazz idiom.

5 out of 5 stars Best jazz musician in years.......2004-08-07

I've been listening to jazz for 30 years and this guy instantly jumped into my top ten list. I pray he keeps producing music. There are a lot of influences here but he is also innovative. If smooth jazz doesn't cut it for you then get this.

5 out of 5 stars please try this album.......2004-06-08

Buy this album, listen to it thoroughly, and keep on doing this until you realize how great it is. The arranging is some of the most creative and powerful stuff I've heard, and each musician (there are many) contributes with his own voice. Plus, Roseman has one of the most appealing sounds out there, being laid-back and daring at the same time. Please do yourself a big musical favor and get this, it is truly worth it!

    5 out of 5 stars Josh Roseman--musical chameleon.......2003-10-25

I was pretty impressed with his first offering, Cherry, but he's totally outdone himself with this disc.

Let's start at a most unlikely place, the liner notes. Written by one Osiris Black Edgar, they feature phrases like, "glorious works of unadulterated creativity channelled through souls open to the whisperings of otherworldly muses." Ahem. But not to worry. Osiris Black Edgar has his tongue firmly implanted in his cheek, even as he brilliantly delivers over-the-top faux-profound cultural sermons.

Then let's go to the band (we WILL arrive, eventually, it is hoped, at some rationale for this unrestrained rant). Who else has three guitarists--maybe THE three greatest living jazz guitarists--as sidemen? OK, Adam Rogers and Ben Monder are naturally brilliant choices. The kicker? Liberty Ellman, closely associated with that Asian iconoclast keysman, Vijay Iyer. Then there's Barney McAll on Keys, who's fabulous debut, Release the Day, was one of the very finest discs of 2002, but still a relatively obscure player. The list of sideman just goes on and on: Billy Kilson, from the Dave Holland Quintet, on drums; Mark Feldman, violin; Mat Maneiri, viola; Russel Gunn, trumpet; J.T. Lewis, drums; Chris Potter, saxes; Ben Perowsky, percussion; Peter Apfelbaum, winds; Peck Almond, trumpet & flute. Not your usual sessionmen--not by a long shot. Talk about a rich sonic texture! All told, there're 23 different players, divided into the core band and three subordinant tiers. Amazingly, everyone seems to understand his role; there's no unseemly sonic tripping over the other fellow's schtick.

Then there's the vibe: Hip, yet thoroughly accessible; modern, but fully cognizant of The Tradition; sonically dense, but crystal clear. That may be Roseman's greatest accomplishment--to integrate such a hugely varied selection of players and styles into one seamless, beguiling, mesmerizing aural palette.

And how about the arrangements? In this year of gloriously rich musicscapes, e.g., Dave Douglas' Freak In, Wayne Shorter's Alegria, and Michael Brecker's Wide Angles, Treats for the Nightwalker may be the most varied, daring, and eclectic.

The songs, save the short opener by Peter Apfelbaum and the Bacharach/David tune, "Long Day/Short Night," are all Roseman's. His originals are also by far the strongest and most interesting, which marks a departure from Cherry, where the best cuts were covers. Many influnces--from bebop to funk to hip hop to oriental to free jazz to anthemic rock to world jazz to power pop to psychedelia--fade in and out of the procedings, all masterfully integreted into this incredibly tasty gumbo.

With Treats for the Nightwalker, Josh Roseman emerges as one of the most profound and provocative nu jazzers of the third millenium. Do not even THINK about passing this one by.

5 out of 5 stars An Underrated Artist.......2007-06-28

If you know little about Gino Vannelli, aside from the fact that he had two major hits, "Living Inside Myself" and "I Just Wanna Stop", you have missed out on an exceptional artist. While Vannelli had some other minor hits he was never the sensation he deserved to be. He not only had an incredible vocal ability, he also wrote his material and could play many instruments. "Nightwalker" should have been the album that sent him to the top as it was perfect for 1981 when jazz/fussion was being experimented with to some degree by a number of popular bands. Vannelli had been perfecting this sound for nearly a decade by then. This album is a great blend of ballads and jazz infused pop/rock. The music is rich and lush with many layers and prominent drums. The songs are brilliantly crafted and sound as if they could have been released to adult contemporary radio yesterday, rather than twenty-six years ago. A true music lover will notice that this album requires more than one listen to pick up on the layering and difficult time changes. While alot of adult contemporary music has been fairly predictable, not so with this album. The orchestration is spectacular, due in part to the drums being more out front than in alot of music of this genre. The title track is a fine example of this. "Nightwalker" has a great intro and prominent guitar sounds often missing on adult radio. The song twists and turns but never bores, and Vannelli's vocals really pull you in. "Seek and You Will Find" continues the tradition with complex time changes, pounding drums and more great guitar work as well. While the hit from this collection, "Living Inside Myself" is nothing short of musical brilliance, "Put the Weight On My Shoulders" is a real standout track in the same vein that should have been a huge hit. "Santa Rosa" shows Vannelli at some of his best jazz/rock fusion with the song sounding like something early Level 42 might have conjured up. While this is more adult contemporary music this particular album rocked more often than not. Other artists like George Benson and the aforementioned Level 42 were starting to bring jazz infused pop to different levels about the time this album came out. However, Vannelli's sound was unique and this album was his crowning achievement.

I have been searching for this CD for years, no lie! No one had it! I was so excited when I found it on your web site. Since then I've purchased several CDs here and I'm very satisfied with the prices and the service. I will purchase all of my CDs here. Thanks!

    5 out of 5 stars I still can't get enough..........2006-09-01

I just purchased "These Are the Days" and "Slow Love" (my second copy). I have copies of "Brother to Brother" and "Yonder Tree" (AMAZING ALBUM! I am about to order another copy.) I have all of his albums since "Brother to Brother". I tell everyone I know about Gino.

I just love quality music, production, lyric and music composition and Gino and his brother Joe have always done all of this superbly.

I am hoping and praying that I can see him live one day. This album is great. I noticed that no one mentioned Jimmy Haslip from the YellowJackets on bass. He has been on a lot of Gino tunes and of course does beautifully on this one. One of the reasons I love Gino's music. The best musicians always. I am a mediocre musician, but am inspired to be better because of him! Get ALL of his stuff!

    5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2006-07-19

    5 out of 5 stars Rediscovering Gino.......2006-07-14

I purchased this item to replace a copy I once had on vinyl,so I was already familiar with it. It's been a number of years since I've heard this line-up,& it's nice to rediscover this album. It hasn't been easy to locate, and I was very pleased to find it available as a German Import. For those of you who are accquainted with Mr. Vanelli, he is at his finest, with etherial(?),soaring ballads, orchestrated, sometimes, very simply with just his voice. "Living Inside Myself" was the big hit off of this album. Great Buy!

5 out of 5 stars one of my best albums.......2006-07-06

To pay this price for 35+ minutes of music(that is VERY dodgy) is to be a true Guided By Voices fan. This could have easily been released as an EP for half the price(or even a little less). Only the Glad Girls CD-5 (which was overpriced and had only 3 subpar unreleased tracks including one that was already on another b-side) rivals this cd as the biggest GBV disapointents I've purchased. The biggest thrill here is listening to the ball of noise that the intro to "Paper Girl" came from. I give this 2 stars because it's GBV related and because some of the music is inspired in an experimental way but it's times like this that I wish Bob was more selective of the material he releases or was less prolific(is "edit yourself" being too rough?). Sometimes less IS more. GBV completists will want it but being a GBV completist is no longer possible. You'd have to be independantly wealthy and have the ability to overlook some dicey releases that are doing nothing to raise the stature of the band(or the man). This cd is not cheap but it could have been released and priced accordingly. A disapointment...I've never listened to this thing all the way through. Still, the price is what lets me down the most.
