4 out of 5 stars The best album (still currently for sale) from Midnight Syndicate (but it goes down hill from here).......2007-04-18

The dark magic faded fast after this album was released. Everything they did afterwards just seemed to become redundant. No newer album ever merited any improvements or aroused any special new nuances. Their newer material just started to sound like previously rejected filler material that they started to release afterwards as whole albums. So, I guess, nowadays, Midnight Syndicate is just sitting in limbo hoping to conjure up some new fresh ideas. And they are probably still just licking their wounds from last years backlash of discontinuing the availabilty of their best albums, and then releasing a shoddy re-recording of key tracks.

When I first started buying the CD's of Midnight Syndicate, I was pretty excited about having this dark moody classical outlet to add to my music library. Before the Midnight Syndicate, I only use to find small episodes of the kind of music that the Midnight Syndicate does.

There are other artists such as Cradle of Filth, Yello, Vangelis, Rick Wakeman, Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, and Jean Michel Jarre and various types of horror soundtracks (John Carpenter, Giorgio Moroder, Goblin, etc.) that would give you one or two really cool dark classical instrumentals that just made you wish there were more. When Midnight Syndicate came out with "Born of the Night", that was the album that represented all that I was looking for in a complete sound concept that captured and embraced my more sinister side but in a subtle way. Just like when Hitler had Wagner, and Alex (A Clockwork Orange) had Beethoven, the Midnight Syndicate gave me that atmosphere that empowered my darkest moods and made me feel that there was a kind of music out there that understands me.

This album of "Gates of Delerium" is their fourth project and probably one of the easiest ones to buy. Their first three CD's are discontinued and out of print. It's unfortunate because "Born of the Night" and "Realm of Shadows" were their best two albums. I got them, Thank God, but new fans will never know their most creative years. After "Gates of Delerium" their appeal really began to drop because their music wasn't really growing or going anywhere new and adventurous. Some concepts have changed, but those changed concepts were just becoming stale and redundant. They started to record dull uninspiring stale non-embellished classical passages which all sounded alike all through their albums. Each album just started to get even more boring from one album to the next. Their last respectable project was "The 13th Hour". So if you get "Gates of Delerium" and "The 13th Hour", that is all you really need from the Midnight Syndicate. Their other albums (including their retrospective CD) are just so bland and uninteresting. But, of course, if you see them "used" somewhere selling for about the price of an empty CD jewel box, that may be worth it. If you see "Born of the Night" and "Realm of Shadows" used somewhere, definitely jump on them. And check out Nox Arcana too if you want to check out more music similar to "Gates of Delerium" (and especially the eerie sound of "Born of the Night" and "Realm of Shadows"). Midnigh Syndicate haven't released anything new since their "Out of the Darkness" CD. I guess they are still suffering from the repercussions of that major mistake. I sure hope they'll bounce back with something new soon.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Incredible Musical Tour Through A 19th Century Asylum!!.......2006-12-11

Listening to this muscial masterpiece as I type this, I'm astounded to find that I have never placed my review of this Incredible CD on this page and I've owned it for years.

Allow me to correct that mistake right now.

Everyone...this is one FUN FUN FUN CD!

Just listening to this music now, there is so much more freedom and artistic openness to the arrangements from the previous two CDs.
Both Born of the Night and Realm of Shadows are Awesome CDs in thier own right and ANY Midnight Syndicate fan should have them in thier collection (if they can still obtain a copy seeing that both recordings have been discontinued) but there is an *oppression* present that I can't put my finger on.
I can't explain it.
But in THIS recording...Midnight Syndicate Band Mates Edward Douglas and Gavin Goszka BUST LOOSE and become the Artists that they are destined to be. This musical tour relies VERY LITTLE on sound effects and those that are there are very well and appropriately placed. Never over done...never under done. Your imagination is ALLOWED to take over and see what it wants to see...and sometimes things that you don't, but your brain takes you there anyway! lol!
The music is lush, darkly alluring and carries you through the asylum of scared, misunderstood and mistreated patients at the mercy of the facility's sadistic Dr. Haverghast! *Don't worry! you don't hear anything *BAD* but like I said, this CD-so good- your brain just takes you there!
I have never tired of this recording. It's complete "Mind Candy" and carries you away to another time.
This is why Midnight Syndicate are the Masters of the Genre that they created... Gothic Halloween CDs for the Imagination and they just keep getting better and better with time.

Now....go buy this CD and let yourself be taken away....
down the hall, dragged, screaming for your life as the metal door slams shut behind you as your helpless screams die away in the distance.....

5 out of 5 stars Another Midnight Syndicate disc that is a must have.......2006-06-05

"Gates of Delirium" is the CD that set the stage for the band's CD "The 13th Hour." Even though I was introduced to "The 13th Hour" first, I really enjoy this CD & it really allows you to picture the haunted asylum. Great music mixed with the minimal sounds of crazed laughter and ghostly effects, it can quickly create goose bumps all over your body. I realized after listening to it over and over again, that this is the music being used at two haunted houses in my area last fall.

If you are looking for a mysterious, dark, haunting orchestral CD, this is a must have.

2 out of 5 stars Footsteps, knocks & giggles.......2006-04-24

If you want to listen to something really unsettling, try Brian Eno's "On Land". It's the creepiest thing I've ever heard - and it doesn't rely on footsteps, knocks and giggles like "Gates of Delirium" does. Sure, the music here (when it's not overblown) has its moments, but it's really just a cross between a horror movie soundtrack and a Hallowe'en special effects CD. The track "Haverghast Asylum" reminds me of an outtake from Alice Cooper's "Welcome to My Nightmare". That might have been the intention, of course, but it adds up to a CONSCIOUSLY spooky listen, not a SUBCONSCIOUSLY eerie listen like the aforementioned album by Eno.

If you're looking for background music to a game of Vampire: The Masquerade, I suppose "Gates of Delirium" will do the trick - but if you want to feel the goosebumps rise, put on a pair of headphones, turn out the lights, and listen to "On Land". Alone.

5 out of 5 stars "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.".......2005-11-30

Are you looking for that halloween music that can give you a fright?
Are you hungering for the music that gives chills and is right with the moon in the dead of night?
Are you tired of those $3.99 Halloween Cds you find at your local grocery store?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then you've come to the right place. So, now, sit back, relax, and dim the lights as we take you on a journey through an abandoned insane asylum. Be warned that once you have arrived, you'll never be able to see the sun ever again. Every song from the first to the last sends chills down the spine of the unwary listener. As the Cd progresses we are treated to sounds of wailings as we hear imprisoned souls as they cry out in pain as they suffer the agony of their tormenters. "Room 47" is where you feel the pain of the soul that is confined to this blited place. Beware, once you have arrived, you never get out alive. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Album not worth the spyware it installs.......2006-06-16

The other reviews are correct in their assesment of the music presented here. I'm writing this review to warn you that this album will install Sunncomm's MediaMax software without warning on your computer should you try to play in on your computer. Fortunately the installer crashed on my system thanks to spyware blocking software I'm running.
This DRM copy protection software is difficult to remove should it infect your system.
There is no warning on the CD cover or when it installs the DRM software, you only find out afterward.
For this reason I give the album 1 star, the music's not bad but the DRM software being installed without your knowledge makes the risk of owning this CD not worth it.
I agree with the other reviewer who said this CD deserves to be stolen.

3 out of 5 stars If your big on the heavy metal and horror scene..........2005-11-16

The Good
The devastating riffs on Mudvayne's "Small Silhouette" are sure to make your blood curl. "It Dies Today" breaths new life into Depeche Mode's "Break the Silence". They take what could be viewed as a subtle and mundane song and turn it into a driving metal horror piece. The fury and anger of Norma Jean's "Shaunluu" is enough to make your ears bleed. The unlikely pairing of System of a Down's Serj Tankian and Buckethead on "We Are One" works out pretty well. Although, if you didn't tell me that Buckethead was involved, I would have thought this was a SOD track. The riffage on "This is My Own" gives the illusion that you are falling into the fiery pits of hell. Once the evil vocals kick in, you'll swear it's the dark Lord himself. Even though Rise Against fall into the new punk category, they still pull off a frantic and ominous delivery with "Obstructed".

The Bad
When the hell did pop-punk set the soundtrack to horror films (Alkaline Trio, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, et al)? Wasn't that always a hard rock and metal thing? Oh yeah, who invited Andrew W.K.? Not only does his track "You Will Remember Tonight" not fit in with the soundtrack, but I don't think this guy has ever fit in the rock scene period.

The Verdict
You know, it's funny that the directors of this series are well-know, because the same really can't be said for most of the musicians on the soundtrack. That's okay though. If your big on the heavy metal and horror scene, the you will no doubt enjoy this compilation. If you're just looking for some cool new metal band to check out, this is a good place to start.

3 out of 5 stars masters? of horror? huh?.......2005-11-08

it took me awhile to realize that this CD was actually a 'soundtrack' of sorts to the short film series currently on cable Tv / check your local listings!!! heh heh heh

but it's pretty good. there are different types of bands...some rock, some are lame emo-junk. but mostly it's a good metal/rock compilation disc. a nice disc for someone looking for a mix of new stuff by upcoming hardcore acts, too. But it particularly turned ME on to a band called Murder By Death, kind of an alt rock group that really kicks some butt.

Standout tracks are by Andrew WK, Shadows Fall, In Flames, Rise Against (i love their song), Every Time I Die, and Mastodon. Oh, and Murder by Death, who I already mentioned.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful for every Rocky enthusiast!.......2007-06-21

For everyone that loves to do the Time Warp, this is a great CD. Granted, this is not the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack, but it is the soundtrack to the London play written and starring Richard O'Brien which inspired the great cult-classic movie. Tim Curry does sound a little different than the movie, but only because he was 2 years younger, and also movies sound different than open theaters. Hot Patootie is not done by Meatloaf, only because this soundtrack was made before the Rocky Horror craze was introduced to America. All in all, I think this is a great album for Rocky Horror aficionados and collectors. For those of you that only know and like the movie, this album is not for you.

    4 out of 5 stars I think this is a good cd.......2005-01-08

I think this cd is pretty good. The buyer should be aware though that this isn't the movie soundtrack, so they shouldn't expect the songs to sound exactly like the movie. To me, this is sort of like buying a live album of a rock band. Some people want the live versions to sound exactly like the studio version, so if you're one of those people, this may not be for you.
I actually think that some of these versions may be better than the movie version. I really like Riff Raff's version of "Science Fiction-Double Feature", but Magenta's version on this cd sounds really creepy, which I think is kind of cool. Also, while no one will top Meat Loaf's "Hot Patootie", the version on this is pretty good, and sounds like a fifties Greece type song.
The singers definitly don't sound like they've had much vocal training, but it is bearable. There is also a song called "Once in a While" on this that isn't on the movie version. This song though is so-so in my opinion. And there is actually an extra verse sung by Brad on "Frankenstein Place". Just thought I'd mention that too.
So, basically what I'm trying to say is that it is a good cd, but be aware that this is different from the movie soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Fun... Not For Every RHPS Fan, Though.......2003-03-24

I have to admit, I liked the movie soundtrack before I bought this. This did seem a little rough at first... but it is a lot more fun for me. It sounds vry tinny, and some of the voices are a little rough... Tim Curry sounds a little different, but is up to his usual excellent standards. It's more like three-and-a-half, leaning more towards four, because it's just campier. The songs, in their original form, are a bit more true to the original idea and structure: in the liner notes, it is outlined that the musical was originally an idea to preserve the music of the sixties. The songs are a lot more upbeat, and one gets a better sense of character (especially from Rocky and his effeminate cries).

4 out of 5 stars Contrary to what the title says..........2003-01-23

This is not the sound track to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. This is the Original Cast Recording from the Rocky Horror Show performed in London's Theatre Upstairs. The stage show is what the international smash-hit RHPS was based off of.

2 out of 5 stars Sweet Trans... dear lord make it end........2002-09-28

I was unfortunate enough to listen to this CD during a lunch break at school... I almost cried. That's how horrible I, and my other RHPS enthusiasts, believed it to be. Be forewarned! It's done improperly, making it sound utterly horrid and NOTHING like any version of RHPS should be. I was angered by this... Grrrr... I LOVE the Rocky Horror Picture Show, but you have to do it right or just not even attempt it at all. The singers were not in any specific character, sounded overly choral, and was just utterly... wrong. *tear* So sad. The only reason why I even gave it two stars is just because it's the RHPS. They get minimal credit for at least attempting, even though they killed it.

Oh yes, I do understand that these people are not the original cast and are expected to sound different... but DIFFERENT is not the same thing as unbearable.

My friend paid $20 for a dinged up version of Horror Epics, and fortunately for me, I found a mint copy in a miscellaneous record bin, for $10. This, and I haven't heard the bonus tracks, is definitely the best Exploited album I've ever heard. This almost leans to speed metal but at it's heart this is a punk record with some amazingly fitting guitar solos. They really add some bite to these songs. There is sort of an oddball track here, "Dangerous Visions," as it has the female backing vocals of Dee, similarly to "Sexual Favours" by Exploited. It's also my favorite song on the record. Well, it's a toss-up between that and "Don't Forget the Chaos." This record seriously rips. Just listen to the samples of the first five tracks, and you'll get the idea. This was the last great record by the Exploited, and any thing after 1986 just makes Wattie more and more of an idiot, but forget about those dreadful post-'86 records, and GET Horror Epics if you haven't got it!

5 out of 5 stars MIND GRINDER !!!!!!!.......2003-12-26

This is an awfully underrated album !!In my opinion,it's one of the best, second only to ¨Beat The Bastards¨.This somewhat experimental record mixes dark and industrial influences with an
indescriptibly fast paced, pounding and percussive harcore sound.Drums sound like a machine
gun, souped up with sampled loops from a rythm machine, sounding like there were 3 drummers
playing at the same time !! Guitar work is savagely furious, razor edged,a constant aural assault, full of wild solos, mixed in very loud.Bass is fast, hard and precise.Wattie's delivery
OK as usual. The sound here is well ahead its time.Don't expect any resemblance to the 2
first albums. If you want to listen to something very original, open your mind and wallet.

3 out of 5 stars Keep The Songs Under 8 minutes next time guys.......2000-08-20

This is not a really good exploited album. I only gave it three stars because of "Don't Forget The Chaos" ,"I Hate You" , and "Maggie" which were the only three descent songs on it. All the other songs were extremely long , and painfully boring. And whats with the album cover ? Did the Exploited go from neo nazis , to the Misfits ?

4 out of 5 stars still kept going.......2000-07-27

the exploited still stayed true to their roots after many of the other bands that were associated with them (discharge, english dogs) went way too metal and weak. These guys kept the hardcore punk sound all the way. This cd is really good but some of the songs go on for too long.
