5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

4 out of 5 stars Despite The Flaws It Is Very Unique.......2007-03-24

This disc keeps a spot in my collection as perhaps the disc which was hardest for me to find. I was in a clothing store in the mid '90's and heard maybe 30 seconds of one of the songs on the canned track music. Maybe I am not a Hendrix completist but I do have about 40 different Jimi discs including bootlegs, live stuff, etc. I was captivated that I heard something easily identifiable as THE Voodoo Chile that I never heard before. It took a few of weeks of searching (no sophisticated internet tools then) to track down what it was. Now for the disc itself...
I can understand why some cannot stand it or think it is an abomination. This is not Jimi. I have to admit I like it though. It is not so much that Jimi works with the style or even that the songs put together come anywhere close to anything JH original. I do like the creative effort though. A must have for any collector, like it or not. Some say Jimi is rolling over in his grave. I think he just looks and laughs, happy that any form of his creativity is bringing joy to someone- even if it doesn't to some who liked his original stuff or that joy is to some that may not like his original stuff at all. I am a believer that as history reveals the beginnings of recorded history via sound recordings and film that Hendrix will be looked upon as a creative genius hundreds of years in the future- perhaps even more than now. Live on forever James Marshall! May generation after generation drink from your spirit and express that "experience" as it moves them.

I am a dedicated rock and roller--since seeing The Beatles on Ed--but to be honest with you, I never was much into Jimi's ultra acid flecked jams--again, being a Beatle guy, I loved melody. What always seemed to grab my ear with Jimi, were his wonderful melodies--'Angel', 'Little Wing', 'Wind Cries Mary' etc.--though, Jimi is long gone (can you imagine him in an 'Unplugged' segment?!)this cd is a great way to get into the groove that is Hendrix--his melodies, his funk, his spirit. Dreamy, exotic and captivating--crank this up--perfect after a good surf session and a visit to Captain Hoppo.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst records ever made........2006-02-20

I love Jimi. And I'm no fan of hip hop or disco or whatever the dregs is that's reinventing perfectly fine Jimi songs. Sure, experimentation is lovely. But sometimes it doesn't work. If I liked this type of music I'd probably like this record. But this is almost (almost) as bad as the String Quartet tribute album of Jimi. Whew, I can't think which is worst. Don't get me wrong, there's several Jimi tribute albums I do like (the one with the Cure, who's cover is pure brilliance is good, as well as a couple more albums).

Anyway, flee for your lives (if you don't like disco or whatever this yuk is). Flee. chrisbct@hotmail.com

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Mix of Jimmy and chill.......2006-02-12

This album was brought to my attiontion way back in the 90's (whew), by a friend of mine who worked at a radio station before clear channel bought them up, and every other good radio station in the universe.I love this album beacuse it weaves Jimi so effortlesssly with really good beats and down tempo. The Sea Eventually is a classic remake of Jimi's Castles made of Sand and is the stand out track of this whole album. For late night use only!!

How do I review this one? I bought it with the full knowledge that I was getting a cheesy mish-mash of Hendrix samples and clubby electronica. I heard cuts from this on Traverse City's WNMC when it was new in '94, took note of it as something unique and kept it tucked in the back of my mind...

Jimi Hendrix's music briefly went into the public domain in the early nineties, and this UK electronic band gained permission to sample at will. Could have been a really cool idea, if say Bill Laswell had been behind it. Shortly after "If 60s Were 90s" was released, Jimi's family re-obtained the rights to his catalog and the album was almost instantaneously deleted.

...fast forward to mid-winter 2002, in northern New Jersey (near the home of Continuum Records, the label which released this singular platter), where I found myself holding a copy of this out-of-print little curiosity at a used music store for $5. Of course I bought it.

So this isn't one you should have because it is revelatory or anything, but because it's fun, oddball and kind of silly. After all, Jimi once said (and it's reprinted on the digipack), "When I die I want people to just play my music, go wild and freak out, and do anything they wanna do."
