"[The Presidents] still make catchy, punky pop tunes, but dammit if they don't sound better than they ever did..."

Product Description
How come you’ve never heard of this record by a band that’s sold millions? And why did it only sell 25,000 copies when it came out on dot.com startup Musicblitz.com in 2000?

Well, it wasn’t because the record isn’t great. 'Freaked Out And Small' got rave reviews in CMJ, Alternative Press and All Music Guide, among others.

Presidents guitarist Dave Dederer offers a full explanation: "In 2000, the Presidents didn’t even exist. We’d been split up for almost three years. A family friend of mine was doing A&R at this startup, and he offered us some dough up front to go in and cut a record for a download-only release. We told him we weren’t a band, we weren’t reuniting, we weren’t going to play any shows, we weren’t doing any promo and we’d make whatever the hell record we wanted to make. By the time we were making the record, Musicblitz realized that the web thing wasn’t going to work. They decided overnight to become a brick-and-mortar record company, something they knew nothing about. And then they went bankrupt just a couple of months after the record came out. Personally, I’m blown away that it sold as many records as it did. And I’m proud of the record – it’s probably my favorite thing we’ve recorded."

The Presidents are, of course, reunited. They’ve been touring the U.S. since early 2003 and released a new album, 'Love Everybody,' in August 2004. All three of the Presidents’ NAIL releases are on the band’s own PUSA Music label.

Well, instead of writing a page long review about how this cd will hit you harder than yo' momma with an extension cord. Just put ten dollars aside and buy this cd you cheapo. I mean come on, 2 full length cd's? This guy must be an escaped mental patient with turn tables, anywho you go ahead and buy it.

True Doormouse fans should actually be begging their mommy for a credit card right about now. You shouldn't even read this review. But if you must:

A 2 CD set. I know the price is low, but it's for two separate CDs, and there's no trick or gimmick. The first CD (The Method: Volume One, The Streets of Miami) involves, and I quote, "fifty five minutes of over forty songs." I honestly didn't expect anything less from Doormouse, and he certainly doesn't disappoint. He also doesn't miss a single musical genre. This mix bounces from Count Basie to The Monkees to Venetian Snares to Squarepusher to Panacea to Wagon Christ to the Apocalypse Now soundtrack to Disney horror sounds to Senor Coconut to Louis Armstrong and that's not even including the 30 other artists plus his own crazy beats. Yup, exactly what I said. It's complete craziness, and yet you'll be glued to your speakers periodically shouting, "I've heard that!" A mix that's more of an experience than a continuous pot luck of songs. You'll love it like you love an enema in your ear. DM and I have agreed to call it an earnema. Love it. Love it hard.

On to the second CD: mind you, this is coming from a guy who fell in love with Doormouse during the first track of his Broken album back in August of 2002. It was a rainy night, his socks were wet, and I needed a good whipping anyways, and yet I digress. The second CD (Freaked Out Mess) is a complimentary copy of the full length album that was released by the Addict record label in August 2003. The first track (Crustomer - moving to Miami) threw me for a loop. I did a quadruple take at the CD player. It's so calm. It's so crisp `n clear. A good song, don't get me wrong, but I thought maybe Doormouse has matured to a funk master. The trumpet samples are so fun and light hearted, and the absence of his hardcore beat made me think I accidentally put my Freddy Fresh album in. The second track brought me back to reality nice and quick. Good old DM didn't lose his insane beats after all. Track 2 (Face in the Gutter) is basically Doormouse 101, tardiness is mandatory. But the first and second track have something in common (other than being produced by the same person, smart***), the crisp nature of the sound. The Broken album seems so muffled compared to this one. The beats are clean and refined (new equipment, DM?) and subsequently the samples seem cleaner too. I grew up on Propellerheads, so I tend to like old sounding talking samples (not necessarily having British accents). These clean sounding samples seem to have all been recorded by DM himself. I quickly get over it since the beats are so riveting and he interlaces new melodies that make the music much more enjoyable, and not so avant garde. There's a cut up Skelechairs remix (track 4) and a funky Zanzi (track 10) all adding variety to this well-made album, 12 tracks total.

The layers of the music have more depth, and the sounds vary a lot more within a single song as well as among separate tracks. DM has matured in more ways than one, and that makes me just want to eat him out. Enjoy it all if you can handle it, sucka!

2 out of 5 stars Ok, what are the other guys here smoking?.......2007-05-04

I felt compelled to write a quick review after reading 3 5-star reviews. This album does not deserve 5 stars, it's by far the worst effort from PotUSA, and this coming from someone who owns every album, has seen them live 3 times, and pretty much grew up on them as my favorite band for at least 8 years. This album might be worth owning if you want to claim you have every Presidents album, as it's relatively unknown, but there was only 1 track that actually stood out for me: the last one, which I've seen used on MTV during a skating show. A few others might make you smile, but mostly this album shows how uninspired the Presidents were during this time period. Thank god they came out with Love Everybody, which isn't exactly an incredible album (the entire middle of the album is instantly forgettable, but with songs like Monkey River and Jennifer's Jacket it saves itself). 5 stars? Bah. I'm being generous when I give it 2.

5 out of 5 stars The Presidents at their BEST!.......2006-03-04

I own three PUSA albums already (I, II, and Pure Frosting). After purchasing this fourth, I have to admit that the Presidents get better with each album. I loved their more well-known hits from their early CD's, but "Freaked out and Small" has got some of their best songs yet.

Lots of goofy content here, some that I'm probably wise not trying to figure out. But some rocking songs like "Tiny Explosions," "Nuthin but love," "Last Girl on Earth," and "Jupiter." Also some neat slower songs in the mix. The demos are interesting - many are the same tune but with some major differences - instrumentation, tempo, etc.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for any Presidents fan (and anybody who loves fun, toe-tapping music).

5 out of 5 stars pure Presidents.......2005-07-11

This disk takes the Presidents to the extreme! Everything that make the Presidents the Presidents (the quirky lyrics, the simple and energetic beat, the blasting wall of sound, and most of all the whimsy) is exagerated as much as possible. Who else could write an ode to the Death Star which includes the phrase "so good they built it twice"?

You may think you have the disk on repeat, because the first half is the finished songs, and the second half is most of the same songs over again, in demo versions. This may be a little much -- the polished versions are all better than the demo versions. There's a reason why demos don't usually get released.

However, even if they hadn't included the demos this disk would be well worth buying. It's almost impossible not to dance to. It's also better than the recent comeback album. This was the Presidents at their peak -- at least, at their peak in the first go-around.

5 out of 5 stars 1 of 25k... .......2004-11-25

So yes, i was one of the few people who actually bought that cd off of musicblitz.com. (which i think is now a realestate page.) Anyhow, if you have heard any of the Presidents past albums, you'll love this one. This one is a bit more fun sounding as chris ballew adds more of his keyboarding-ness... If you never heard of PUSA, they are a great rock band who play fun songs. Its not punk, not hard rock, not grunge, its just fun to listen to. Peppy little songs about goofy little things that will just make you smile. Great tracks that will surely get stuck in your head. I'm glad to see that they are re-releasing it again to a(hopefully) bigger audience.

When the Presidents of the United States of America disbanded in January 1998, it seemed like a logical move. After songs about peaches, fussy kittens, and Speed Racer, what can a band do? Frontman Chris Ballew bashed out more pop under the tag of an imaginary band of stuffed animals, the Giraffes, but it never caught on. Now the newly reformed Presidents are back for a new term on Freaked Out and Small, and the state of the union is excellent indeed. While the band's studio swansong, II, was a lackluster offer, Freaked Out is a punchy, assured collection of tongue-in-cheek rock songs. The opening one-two punch of "Tiny Explosions" and "Nuthin But Luv" sets the hyper tone, leading into whacked-out, sugar-coated salutes to the planet Jupiter, jazz musicians, broken hearts, Star Wars, and ticking human time bombs. A laugh-out-loud, toe-tapping winner. --Jason Josephes

5 out of 5 stars Why Wasn't This on The Radio?!?.......2003-07-16

What Happened!?! I had just gotten into playing Naked and Famious on my radio show and I looked up the band on VH1.com...There were two albums I had never heard of! Pure Frosting and Freaked Out and Small! Well I had to have both of them! I immediatly began playing Tiny Explosions and Nuthin' but Luv and thye were requested like mad! Everyone loved this album, the local music store couldn't keep up with the demand (this was at a small college in the middle of no where).
Nevertheless, this album rocks. The First two tracks are great to jump around to and drive to, tiger bomb will calm you down, but you'll still keep groovin'. Last Girl on Earth is what all guys go through after a breakup. Jazz Guy is simply about a jazz guy in the 20's-50's. Meanwhile... is an anti-urban rocker which gets it point accross nearly as well as any enviro-rocker such as Midnight Oil (another great band), or U2. Jupiter will keep your foot tapping, and won't let you down. Superstar is another good driving tune. Death Star is merely amusing (and yes it does sound like Kermit The Frog). Blank Baby rocks out how difficult it is to comeout with new materiel. I'm Mad is the American Driving Anthem. The Finale Heading Out is a good closing song and does a good job winding up the album.
I'm looking forward to the next time PUSA gets together (fingers crossed) and putes out some new materiel.
If you're looking for a good rock album, this will not let you down, it's a great escape from the current pop scene and a return to rock. This is a must have for any rock fan.

3 out of 5 stars Overdue, but overall pretty average (3.5 stars).......2003-03-25

Although many of the songs on this CD are good (and very different), this is certainly the weaker of the four Presidents albums. And unlike their debut, II, and Pure Frosting, there are actually some bad songs. Nevertheless, the many Presidents fans should be very pleased with Freaked Out And Small. After the band put together the rarity/b-side compilation CD (Pure Frosting), many people thought that would be the last weýd see of the Presidents. But here, almost three years later, theyýre back. This album did not really receive any publicity, and there was no hit single. But none of that should allow this release to go overlooked. Some of these songs are very good; among the best of the Presidents in all likelihood. Hereýs an overview of the 12 new songs:

The first song, ýTiny Explosionsý, is handýs down the best song on the CD. Its big rock start and ýfire up the womantone / and drown the brown soundý line are very impressive. The song really lets you know the new album will be offering a new rock sound. Next, thereýs ýNuthin But Luvý. Its title is something of a masterpiece in itself; and the mix of music and words are wonderful. For the layperson fan, itýs a cross between ýLunatic To Loveý and ýWe Are Not Going To Make Itý; as if that makes any sense. Overall, Iýd rank it third best. As for the second best song, itýs easily ýTiger Bombý. You have to appreciate ýTiger Bombý for what it is. Which is unlike anything the Presidents have ever written and/or recorded. It tells the story of (Iým assuming) Chris Ballewýs obsession with a drummer he met on the road. The lyrics are amazing and the slow-rock pace is awesome. ýLast Girl On Earthý takes a while to get used to, but once you do itýs an enjoyable song. Next, I have to say that ýJazz Guyý is probably the worst song on the album. But even so ýplay black music for white peopleý is pretty funny. ýMeanwhile Back In The Cityý is another decent track. Again, itýs very different.

Although the top three songs on Freaked Out And Small are featured in the first half of the album, ýJupiterý is my fourth favorite song. The lyrics, though about the planet, are similar to the days of ýLumpý. Itýs a good sing-along track. ýSuperstarý isnýt that great, and sounds (believe it or not) like the Wallflowers. Maybe thatýs because Dave Dederer, who is normally on guitar, sings lead vocals. Itýs not a bad song, but itýs not great either. Another semi-decent song on the CD is ýDeath Starý. The words are fun; as they talk about that infamous Star Wars planet. But (again, believe it or not) it sounds like Kermit the frog is singing. Finally, ýBlank Babyý brings us back to the typical Presidents music weýre all accustomed to. Itýs nothing too special, but could be considered a hidden gem. ýIým Madý is another bad song and is too similar to ýJazz Guyý. Dederer again takes the lead vocals; why I donýt know. Itýs very hard to enjoy the song; but if you liked ýJazz Guyý, youýll like ýIým Madý. Another one of the albumýs finest is its closer: ýHeadiný Outý. Itýs slow, like ýTiger Bombý, but the big rock ending is a fitting end for the Presidents Of The United States Of America.

All in all, Freaked Out And Small is a good CD, but incomparable to their previous three. ýTiny Explosionsý would rank at about #9 or so in the bandýs top 10 list, but other than that none of the songs really come close (ýTiger Bombý at #12, maybe). Overall itýs a good CD, but it seems like the band has run out of things to sing about. They seem to have chosen a ýspaceý theme; and it shows in songs like ýJupiterý, ýDeath Starý and even ýLast Girl On Earthý. Iým not saying thatýs a bad thing, but itýs certainly not very original. At least not as original as their self-titled debut or II was. I like this album a lot, but people who are expecting a ýLumpý or a ýMach 5ý-like single will be disappointed with the total package. Yet all you diehard Presidents fans should enjoy it for what it is.

5 out of 5 stars Fun rock.......2002-12-30

The Presidents. Perhaps the most loved/and/or/hated Seattle band. Why? Ironically, the exact same reasons are listed by both the lovers and the haters.

They're irreverent (they're not serious).

They're fun (they're goofy).

They're not real musicians (they're not real musicians).

Okay, that last one is both untrue and doesn't really have a pos/neg spin on it. :)

The Presidents really are serious musicians. My ex-fiancee went to school with them (in Seattle- they're true homegrown dudes) and said they were always playing around with instruments, even then; and they were SERIOUS about it, even back then.

Me? I come squarely down on the "fun" side of things. If you think the Presidents aren't serious, or are too goofy, or whatever, then you need to pull the stick from... you know... and just lighten up.

5 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with the Prezs of USA.......2002-01-18

An incredibly underrated band that barely got their due, even at their peak. I fear that these guys got pegged as a novelty act but they're so much more than that. If you're contemplating picking this one up, I say....GO FOR IT! It's good stuff and I hope there's much more to be heard from this wonderful band.

5 out of 5 stars No impeachment for these Presidents!.......2002-01-15

Instead of having lofty social goals like REM or U2, the Presidents just want everyone to have fun, and their music shows it!

In my opinion, they are the best band of the 90's. They have great rock songs, and they're alternative enough to be different while not alienating anyone by being too weird.

This CD, their best one, has a lot more peppy rock songs then the others, and it's hard to listen to it without the volume all the way up. They have some good slow songs, too, like Tiger Bomb, which is perhaps their second best song (under Peaches, of course)

Even if you haven't heard of the band, this is a fantastic CD, and one that anyone looking for some feel-good, high energy rock will absolutely love.

the loudest space funk band on the planet are back with more soul and grooves than you can shake a rubber chicken at and believe me, kava kava are truly "funked up and freaked out" ........here the energy and dedication of the band's live performances across Europe are captured on some intensely emotional studio performances.

check out tune "beats for cheats" for attitude (remixed here by Zion Train/Germander Speedwell)

check out "n.f.a." for an almost religious like passion. "....that voice! in their singer, kava kava possess a rare effortless instrument, a timeless soulful presence able to weave in and out of diverse sample based technologies and decades of influences..." once described as "the Jack Bruce of the e-generation" (ben watson of the wire) that's just what it is - a timely fix of old school, soul-drenching, over washes of lush bleeps, beats, live funk and ass kicking underground grooves.

Daring, eclectic, refreshing with lush instrumentation and a full live line up ….. Kava Kava are going where many bragging dance acts claim to be via the odd bongo player …..

Kava Kava definatly deliver the goods on this funky release. Funked Up and Freaked Out being the 'must hear' song of the album. This album borrows from old school funk and disco but creates something on a totally new level unique to Kava Kava. An amazingly produced album with even greater songs.

5 out of 5 stars Funked Up and Freaked Out!.......2003-10-18

What a fantastic collection of early Kava Kava recordings. I bought the album "Maui" and it totally blew me away. On this EP you get Soul, Funkadelia, Beats n Breaks...a funky mash up with the superb bonus French electro Germander Speedwell remix.

Highlights include the anthemic Propellorheads style "Kamikaze" with its awesome strings and squelchy keyboards. I see this band one day playing stadiums if there is any justice. "Beats for Cheats" is an outstanding song with a killer acid riff and a message. "Funked Up and Freaked Out" deserves to be the theme tune for an extreme sports TV ad. "NFA" is a stunning, soulful Portishead/Death In Vegas style psychedelic monster with a beautiful melody. BUY IT!
