From her beginnings as a pop chanteuse in 1964, through a little-heard set of country rock, on to the edgy bearing of her second commercial breakthrough with Broken English in 1979, and then into the world of Kurt Weill and elsewhere, Marianne Faithfull appears to have taken wildly varied twists and turns. In fact, her ongoing musical projects move with one another with breathtaking artistry. Before The Poison is yet another peak, as she collaborates with PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, and, Jon Brion. From the ethereal balladry of "There is a Ghost" (with Cave and the Bad Seeds), to the meaty guitar punches of Harvey's "My Friends Have," this album is a diverse set that's all tied together by the smoky resonance and phrasing of Faithfull's unmistakable voice. --David Greenberger

Product Description
Faithfull's career spans over four decades, beginning with the melancholy of the Jagger/Richards' tune, "As Tears Go By", the first of four hit singles Marianne recorded during the 60's. In 1979, she released the stunning reinvention "Broken English", the album by which her mature career has been measured. "Before The Poison" is another such record, as Faithfull teams with her most sympathetic collaborators yet, including PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Blur's Damon Albarn, and Magnolia composer Jon Brion.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing album.......2007-06-12

Anthony Rupert get's it wrong below. I am not a Marianne Faithfull fan really, I don't know that I have every even listened to a full Marianne Faithfull album before.
I am a fan of this CD though. The song construction throughout is fresh and unlike much else that is out there.
I would have missed this album all together, but I happened to be in the same restaurant with Elvis Costello a few years back. I overheard him having a conversation with a fan when the topic of Marianne Faithfull came up. Elvis highly praised this release, so I sought it out to listen to it.
I concur with Elvis. If you are board with contemporary music and musicians, I would encourage you to give this one a listen.
Also Anthony, 'My Friends Have' is a great song.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Album.......2007-04-11

Although melancholic, the album is better than "Broken English" - has very defined melodies matching quality singing. Worth every penny. Marianne Faithfull has voice and she can sing.

5 out of 5 stars Potent and raw.......2007-01-11

The combination of Marianne Faithfull's voice with PJ Harvey and Nick Cave's lyrics and music is the perfect combination - starting immediately with the first track. Admittedly, this is my first Faithfull album, but I am astounded by the genius of matching her with Harvey and Cave.
The result is raw, honest, gritty and beautiful.

This is a one-of-a-kind recording and I cannot recommend it enough.

4 out of 5 stars Another metamorphosis?.......2006-06-30

I am not a huge Marianne Faithfull fan. When "Kissing time" came out some years ago I was struck by the beautifull clash of Legend (Marianne) and new inspired songwriters. "Before the poison" tries to make that magic happen once again. Somehow it does not seem to work as well. Maybe because PJHarvey and Nick Cave are similar enough to typical Marianne Faithfull. Still there are some beautifull moments...

1 out of 5 stars Who Is Selecting Her Material Now?.......2006-01-21

I have loved Marianne Faithfull forever. Indeed, my introduction to her was her (self-described "classic f-up" on Saturday Night Live). She is an an incredibly gifted interpreter of others' songs (and of her own songs herself, when she gives it a try). But the last two albums, this one and "Kissing Time," are just disasters. Why is she trying to perform the lackluster songs of today's forgettable artists? She's far more talented than that. Indeed, she is a voice of maturity on today's music scene. Stick to what you do well, Marianne...Billie Holiday, Kurt Weill, and the like. With that material, you are a brilliant pioneer. With this newer, insubstantial stuff, you are just a joke. Be the imperial songstress you were meant to be, darling...those pipes are gorgeous...

With the eagerly awaited 'You Come Before You', Velvet Hammer/Atlantic recording group Poison The Well instantly establish themselves as one of the world's most aggressive & ambitious bands. Produced by Eskil Lovstrom & Pelle Henricsson (Refused, Hell Is For Heroes), the 12-track collection - the band's label debut & third full-length release overall - sees the Florida-based quintet continuing to refine their progressive blend of metallic hardcore rock 'n' roll, blending furious riffs & speed rhythms with distinctively expressive melodic songwriting. 2003.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars not the same band.......2007-05-19

If you are a fan of The opposite of December, or Tear from the red, do not waste your time on this album. It is not even close to the same band!

4 out of 5 stars improvement.......2006-07-28

You Come Before You by Poison the Well is a good cd. Compared to the crap that is tear from the red, this is a major improvement. Sure, the band doesn't sound the same, but if you are a ptw fan you should own this album. This album is sort of experimental. The recording quality is very good and there are some standout songs, like Apathy Is A Cold Body and Crystal Lake. The former is a melodic, sort of relaxed song, while the latter is one of the heaviest songs the band has written. I really did not like Tear From the Red. I only listen to two songs on the cd, and there was loads of filler and monotony throughout the album. Poison the Well has never been a truly amazing or great hardcore band, but this experimentation could be a sign of better things to come.

3 out of 5 stars They can do better........2006-06-13

The best word that describes this album is "dissapointing". But dissapointing in the fact that the band is PTW. If this were another band id still say the album was a good one and i would still buy it. But this album is really beneath the bands talent. This is their most mainstream album to date and it shocked me to hear that the music isnt as complex or heartfelt as all their writing has been in the past. If you read the lyrics of Ghostchant you will wonder what the heck they were thinking. Its as if Jeff(vocals) simply lost all his inspiration and the music itself took a backseat to simplicity as well. Then again what do you expect when this album only took them one year from their previous album to release. Is this album still worth buying......YES. but id reccommend it to the newcommers to PTW as a great starting point. If youre a big fan of the old stuff then i think you will be just as dissapointed as i was with this one. I hope their new one will be much better since they have spent nearly 3 years on it.

5 out of 5 stars The benchmark for the new generation of Hardcore.......2006-05-10

PTW's You Come Before You is a rare gem in a rapidly fading genre. While it seems every other band in the modern Hardcore scene seems content with just pounding out a dozen songs for a record, PTW has assembled an actually album that flows very well and still kicks your teeth in. Listening closely to the guitar parts reveals complex layer rarely found in this style of music (see Glassjaw's Worship and Tribute). Jeff's unique approach to his vocals, sort of slam poetry-eque talking and brutal yelling, keeps things interesting. In short, You Come Before You gives me hope for the future of Hardcore by treading new ground and hopefully setting an example.

5 out of 5 stars Poison the Well - 2003.......2006-04-21

I was so disappointed to see this album was NOT welcomed with open arms, i had to comment. This is Poison the Well's 3rd major release. This is also the last album recorded before Derek Miller [guitar] called it quits. Miller was later replaced in 2004, by former Target Nevada guitarist Jason Boyer. Jeffrey Moreira [vocals] is an outstanding singer/song writer, his voice is reminicent to that of Dave Grol of the Foo Fighters and Daniel Johns from Silverchair on this record. Tracks like "Loved Ones" and "Crystal Lake" are upbeat and catchy, where dreamy instrumentals like "the Opinionated are so Opinionated" catch you off guard and put you in a different time and place. Look, i know its not quite as harsh or gritty as "Opposite of December" or "Tear from the Red." However, this is still a very solid album, and i believe it will be a stepping stone for a new Poison the Well. If you like Skycamefalling, 7 Angels 7 Plagues, or Misery Signals, you'll probably like Poison the Well.

4 out of 5 stars Otherworldly dirges.......2006-02-11

On this album Faithfull collaborates extensively with PJ Harvey and Nick Cave. There are three Harvey covers: Mystery Of Love, My Friends Have and No Child Of Mine, while the title track and In The Factory are co-written by them with Marianne contributing lyrics. Nick Cave features as music composer on Crazy Love, There Is A Ghost and Desperanto.

The style varies from the messy rock of My Friends Have and the tuneful pop ballad Crazy Love with its lovely violins to the bluesy Last Song and the slow mournful rock of No Child Of Mine with its complex and stirring vocal interplay. A torch rock outing, the title track is so gloomy it would have made Nico of the VU proud and There Is A Ghost is only somewhat lighter, with beautiful piano against eerie synths.

In The Factory is a slab of slow brooding rock with great guitar work and a melancholy chorus, whilst the rhythmic and uptempo Desperanto rocks on in an atmospheric drone of guitars, synths and a male choir. The masterpiece of this album is the last track, City Of Quartz. It is a most evocative poem set against a magical mix led by music box sounds, to an enchanting effect.

I do not think Before The Poison is on the level of her classics like Vagabond Ways or the Island records Broken English, Dangerous Acquaintances and Times Square, but her fans will enjoy it. The mood is dark and otherworldly overall; it is an album of dirges. But what beauty in that grief, or sweet sorrow. Marianne Faithfull once again wraps herself in the sound of the times on this album, enriching the world of music.

2 out of 5 stars The Sin Eater Feasts Anew .......2004-11-15

Since the release of Marianne Faithfull's blistering Broken English (1979), Faithfull's audience has been impatiently waiting for the vocalist to fully fulfill that album's artistic promise. Though Dangerous Acquaintances (1981) was a solid if less brazen follow up, 1983's A Child's Adventure centered on defeat and exhausted victimization; several tracks wallowed in the very kind of material that Broken English had been such a volcanic reaction against.

Since that time, and despite the guidance of Hal Wilner, Angelo Badalamenti, and other notable impresarios, Faithfull has slogged through a series of largely fragmented, poorly focused, and occasionally embarrassing albums, each of which has contained several riveting tracks buried among some very tepid material indeed. Thus, Faithfull's releases over the last 20 years have become increasingly difficult to become enthusiastic about, as each disappointing album has felt unavoidably like the last of her career.

A handful of young musicians and producers created 2002's Kissin Time, a woefully misguided, grossly overproduced attempt at creating a marketable modern pop album; but pop albums are best structured around performers well under 50, and Faithfull sounded like a superfluous guest vocalist on her own album. Nor was Kissin Time bolstered by the fact that the musicians involved, with the exception of stalwart Dave Stewart, represented musical trends that were quickly becoming dated by the beginning of the new millennium.

Though Faithfull is clearly a talented vocalist, songwriter, and performer, her "world - weary" stranger-, outsider-, and sin - eater persona has long outworn its welcome, and thus what little real verve her albums display appear to be reflections not of her own talent, but of whatever group of handlers she has currently fallen in with.

The ratio of worthwhile to poor material on Before The Poison is about the same as on Faithfull's past several releases. The good news is that Faithfull's two piano - based collaborations with Nick Cave, "Crazy Love" and "There Is A Ghost," both of which are co - produced by Hal Wilner, belong among her finest recordings in the last 20 years, and would have fit comfortably on Strange Weather (1987), Faithfull's best, but far from perfect, post - Broken English collection. "Last Song," a lovely collaboration between Faithfull and Damon Albarn, is reminiscent of her melodic Sixties work and contains some of the album's finest vocal phrasing.

Polly Jean Harvey has produced, written, and contributed to five of the tracks, but only the first, "The Mystery Of Love," really amounts to something substantial. While it's easy to understand why Faithfull would pursue as lean a production as possible after Kissin Time, Harvey's sketchy tracks are so raw that each sounds like a first - rehearsal demo. "Before The Poison" finds Faithfull straining to make herself heard over jangling chorus guitars, "No Child Of Mine," at 6:15 minutes, is simply too long and too slow to sustain itself, while the upbeat "My Friends Have," while less than a Faithfull classic, at least allows the singer to explore a new theme and mood. "In The Factory," the fifth Harvey track, is a flat abstraction, 3:51 minutes of aural fog and limbo.

The musically dynamic "Desperanto," which is instrumentally reminiscent of Blondie's No Exit (1999) or The Curse Of Blondie (2004), is further proof that rapping isn't one of her strengths, while "City of Quartz" is the kind of marring indulgence Faithfull seems unable to resist on album after album.

Another positive aspect of Before The Poison are the album graphics, which include clear, clean and lovely photographs of Faithfull; on previous releases, images of Faithfull have been grotesquely smudged, obscured, or otherwise presented in the least flattering manner possible.

5 out of 5 stars Marianne Faithfull is The Gothic Queen .......2004-10-18

Well, I think that most of us that love Marianne Faithfull were secretly hoping for this day. The day that she would do an album with PJ Harvey and Nick Cave. Well guess what! The day has arrived! "Before the Poison" is beautiful dark masterpiece. "No Child of Mine" written by PJ Harvey has a great hook. It sounds as if it could have been a Rolling Stones song. "There is a Ghost" is a beautiful eerie ballad written by both Marianne Faithfull and Nick Cave. Warren Ellis ( Bad Seeds and The Dirty Three fame) adds a nice mournful touch with his sad violin. And lastly, Jon Brion's magical "City of Quartz" puts the icing on the cake. It has been decided. Marianne Faithfull is the Gothic Queen. Maybe next time Marianne can work Sandy Dillon into the equation.

5 out of 5 stars Empress of Art Rock.......2004-10-03

Marianne Faithfull strips it all down and lays it all out with the awesome, pure, raw emotion that she's known for. The entire cd is filled with life-learning experiences that showcase a voice lightyears ahead of it's time, yet stained by the past.
Critics and fans will be extremely pleased by Marianne's latest release. Once again, Ms. Faithfull has set a very high bar that all other female rockers, young & old, will aspire to. "Before The Poison" is dark, volatile, biting, engaging, sad, insane, foreboding, thought provoking, image invoking, and laslty, flawless!! Marianne has outdone herself yet again, and proven beyond a doubt that she is an artist like no other with a talent for lyrics that can only be called outstanding!! This cd is like nothing she has ever done before...not to mention that the photos & layout are absolutely gorgeous!!
