5 out of 5 stars Ten Years After - 'Undead' (Deram).......2007-06-29

Originally hit the streets in 1968, as this was Ten Years After's second album. It just doesn't get much better than this. Simply great, timeless as well as essential British blues rock. Tracks here that brought back some memories of days long gone were the foot-stomper "Rock Your Mama", "Spoonful", "Woodpecker's Ball", "I Can't Keep From Crying" and the tune that truly made Alvin Lee and company a household name, "I'm Going Home" (who could forget their legendary performance of this gem in the Woodstock film?). Saw that the four cuts that were initially left off the lp because there wasn't room has been now added as bonus tracks. Like I said, it DOESN'T get much better.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Live Rock Recordings Of All Time.......2007-01-03

I saw Ten Years After live in a small club called "The Bank" in Torrance, CA, circa 1968, at which time their live act consisted of what is captured here on Undead. I was totally blown away and immediately went out to get the LP. TYA was in a blues/jazz mode at this stage, and although they went on to be a mega superstar act in the later years of their career (I saw them live 4 times thereafter), their style changed somewhat as they began selling more records (mass popularity in the music biz usually requires a less esoteric style for the masses).
Undead captures the band at their purest apogee of intensity and finesse, when jazz and the blues more than rock 'n roll characterized their musicianship. Undead is especially noteworthy for some great bass soloing by Leo Lyons and some jazzy Hammond soloing by keyboardist Chick Churchill. Their later stuff concentrated on Alvin almost exclusively as the band's soloist, as demonstrated by TYA's recent Live At The Fillmore East CD, which although excellent, features Alvin's guitar pyrotechnics exclusively and which relegates Leo and Chick into the background.
Alvin at the time of the late sixties and early seventies was revered as one of the great guitar gods, right up there with Clapton, Page, Beck, and Hendrix. Many contemporary music critics tend to denigrate his style nowadays, characterizing him as all speed and no style. Undead (and Live At The Fillmore East) prove them all wrong, from my estimation, as only a cursory listein to "I May Be Wrong But I Won't Be Wrong Always" or "Woodchopper's Ball" off of Undead will otherwise prove. Absolute jaw-dropping work that his contemporaties in Guitar Olympus would not have been able to duplicate, dare they even have tried.
My only regret with Undead is that they brought out this version with the bonus tracks after I had already purchased the original CD, the latter of which contained only the same tracks as the LP. Is this some sort of insidious packaging conspiracy on the part of the recording industry, or what?
Bottom-line: this is one of the greatest live rock recordings of all time, bar none.

5 out of 5 stars raw, pure talent, and no electronic help - the way it should be.......2006-11-06

When you want pure talent, electronically unmodified because they're that good, this is for you. Ten Years After "Undead" - live, recorded in the kind of venue our (USA's) George Thorogood would play, up close and enjoyable. Alvin Lee's soulful rapid fire guitar is loud and fast. Rick Lee (drums), Chick Churchill (keys), and Leo Lyons (bass) also get their share of solos in this collection of swing jazz, rock, and blues. I bought the vinyl version thirty some years ago, could only play that at home. Now I own this clean, digitally re-mastered work of art on CD which is one of my favorites to play while traveling.

5 out of 5 stars The Excitement Of London Summer 1968 .......2006-08-16

If their 1st self titled TYA debut lacked punch in the studio..this their official 2nd release, captured TYA as they were intended to be with their highly acclaimed 1st album, one great live blues rock outfit.
Recorded at Klooks Kleek,Railway Hotel West Hampstead London,May 1968, UNDEAD is their natural habitat..this CD is the definitive version clocking in well over 70 minutes, great booklet and notes, remastered sound taking the original album and reformulating it into a total performance..
The groups blend of raw energy fusing blues, jazz, rock and scat extensive soloing behind Alvin Lee is indicative of the many bands of the day but this one recorded performance remains one of the better if not the best capturing the sweat and fury of the band coming into the scene.
The song selections include great covers of Spoonful,Crossroads,Summertime their signature I'm Going Home, and a whole host of finds making this one great CD from the exquisite cover to the music within.
A historical contribution capturing this whole genre fabulously.

5 out of 5 stars This albums got Jazz!.......2004-03-15

o.k., this is probably a better statement, still holding up too, than their debut album.

first off, note the cover; deram put this out, I'll bet, so early in the psychedelic era, that it seems it is just like negatives of a photo... but maybe that basicness, merits this and what the album is about;

but certainly not psychedelia... jazz, blues, rock, Amen

They do Woody Herman's Woodchoppers BAll, and this album, is live but in a small club, sort of quaint; Woodchoppers Ball, is one of a few tracks here, that are rather long, I knew, even hearing this some time ago, and without developed tastes, this is jazzy stuff;

Summertime, again has some nice drumming sound, jazz again; Shantung Cabbage? I am not sure, but TYA sort of got put on the map, rightfully or wrongfully, and if I err, I accept it, by Woodstock, "Goin' Home" is one of the highlights of that musical oddysey; and this is an early version.

This is basic TYA; you know, before a few albums more, and then, maybe they are Rock 'N' Roll; in the whole Zep Stones kind of thing, from what I can tell.

Here, they are the boys, making their way, doing it their way, "Spoonful" famously known as performed by Cream is played here; who came first, that is what I'd like to know.

5 out of 5 stars THE UNDEAD - First, Worst and Cursed.......2003-04-23

One amazing album by one amazing band. They have a sound that is a cross between The Ramones, The Dead Boys, and The Misfits all shoved into a bone crunching meatgrinder and blended together to make a flavor all it's own... Yum! An essential album for any punk / rock fan, I can't recommend this one enough. This is what all those new "punk" bands should sound like, catchy as hell and every song a hit. Get it, before The Undead get YOU!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting live album we have here..........2006-07-23

Live Undead is Slayer's first live album. It was recorded with 50 of their best friends in the audience, which explains why you can hear them so clearly. Despite the lack in decent sound quality, the band itself is in tip-top shape, especially Tom Araya; his voice sounds amazing here.

For a seven-song EP, I could not have chosen better tracks to be on this CD. The standouts are Evil Has No Boundaries, Show No Mercy, and Die by the Sword, but all of these songs sound great and are actually performed a little better than on Show No Mercy/Haunting The Chapel due to a faster tempo and Araya's sharper vocals.

I am taking one star off for the price offered by Metal Blade here. $17 for a seven-song EP? No new songs? Sorry, but you might as well buy this used and make sure it's in good condition; I bought my copy used for $10 and everything's in pristine condition.

If you should get one live Slayer album, get the double-disc Decade Of Aggression that spans throughout their best years musically and features far more songs in better sound quality for only a slightly higher price. But if you are a fan of their early works and want to hear them live near the top of their game, go ahead and pick this up. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Not really essential, but well...it's Slayer!!!.......2006-06-30

This live album was released in 1984 straight after the Haunting the Chapel EP. As far as I'm aware, it was released by the label without the band's permission. As the band had only released one full-length album and the aforementioned EP before recording this live album, it's rather hard to justify. Yet this is Slayer we're talking about, so when you look at the 7 tracks included, you realise you're in for a treat. "Black Magic", "Die by the Sword" and "The Antichrist" are all fantastic tracks and there really aren't any fillers to speak of. The performance itself is perfectly acceptable with each track being played as well as, if not better than the original. Tom's vocals sound very similar to the albums also, which displays just how great a vocalist he is.

It's worth noting that this was not recorded in a normal live environment. It's simply a rehearsal which appears to have had a rather vocal mob of fans in attendance. They sound as if they're enjoying themselves, yet I find that I don't really get the feeling of a live set when I listen to this album due to this fact. Also, the actual sound is not really that great. Everything is perfectly audible, yet when compared to the fabulous "Decade of Aggression" double live album that would come out some years later, well...there really is no comparison.

When I take these flaws into account, add the fact that the running time is under 25 minutes and "Chemical Warfare" was not included on the remastered version I have, I'd have to suggest that this is certainly not an essential Slayer release. It's one for completists like myself that figure too much Slayer really isn't enough, particularly material from their prime 80s period. You know if you fall into that category!

5 out of 5 stars Its not "Decade of Aggression," but its still great........2006-05-04

The sound quality is a little bad in this live album, but other than that, this is f***ing good. Every track on here gets 100 out of 10, but my favorite has to be "Black Magic," as it sounds so awesome live.

If you're gonna get "Decade of Aggression," pick up "Live Undead" with it.

5 out of 5 stars True Slayer fan.......2006-04-22

I own every Slayer cd and I find everyone of them enjoyable. They really dont have a weakness in there career, and even Paul Bostaph was incrediable drummer. This live cd is great sound quailty and very intimate. I love early Slayer because Tom says some pretty funny stuff. So if you like Slayer, get it. If your just a fan of Regin in Blood, skip it.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay..........2005-10-03

This technically is a live album, but it just wasn't performed in front of a large audience. I value any releases from this era in Slayer's career, because it was a very special time in metal.

Unfortunately, the sound quality is pretty awful, and the only tracks that really excite me here are 'Evil Has No Boundaries,' 'The Anti-Christ,' 'Die By The Sword,' and 'Show No Mercy.' They all sound better than their original counterparts. The other tracks are worthy to be skipped over, though, and if you want some 5-Star Live Slayer, check out the 2-cd set, LIVE DECADE OF AGRESSION. 'Live Undead' is worthy to pick up if you want to own all of Slayer's releases, but it is not essential.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Impressive!!!.......2007-03-16

Some people are never happy with what comes out for newer metal. You will always have the people who say it's not original and it sounds like everything else, I think these people are the ones who are becoming bored with music all together nowadays. I admit there aren't too many bands out there that grip me start to finish anymore on new releases. This was one of them though. This band has it all going for them: Perfect production, catchy riffs, ability to slow down and still make powerful engaging music that traps the imagination and drives the inner beast to come forth. This is what I look for in music. So many genres of metal out there and I say this is just really good Melodic Death Metal. I am a huge fan of In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Norther, Nightrage.... I could go on forever but again in a lot of those bands few of them have the diverse ability to captivate the listener and keep them interested. This CD keeps me interested. I tried to find it in a store and couldn't even find a store that could order it so I broke down and bought it from here. This is well worth the money and anyone who does not like this album is not a true Melo-death fan. There is not one flaw beginning to end on this album. Buy it you won't be dissapointed!!!!! I promise!!!

3 out of 5 stars Middle of the road, so-so, average, etc. .......2006-06-12

I had this album pegged two minutes into the first track. This is what I like to call a guilty pleasure. It does not disappoint in any direct fashion. One Man Army gives us some well-played, head-bangable thrash played like so many others have played it, but with a heavier, more grove-laden twist (which is the only `unique' aspect of this album). The album starts to falter about five tracks in when everything starts to sound the same. Nothing stands out, save for a catchy riff here or a notable drum fill there. Take The Haunted, Nightrage, At The Gates, Forsaken, or a hundred other melodic euro-thrash bands, half the tempo, beef up the mids, and you get this album. Like I said, it's a guilty pleasure. I enjoy driving with it blasting on the stereo, because it never fails to get my head moving (for a few songs, at least). This is the project of the singer from The Crown, the now defunct speed/thrash band that, while not doing anything new (seems to be a trend with these guys) at least were willing to up the ferocity and the edginess of their music. One Man Army, however, has taken the easy path and rehashed the already rehashed. The short and long of this album is that it's boring. It's catchy, it's well produced, it's well performed, but it's boring. I am as guilty as the next person for listening to 'unoriginal' bands but there comes a point when the music is so overdone, so trite and familiar, that I can't go without saying something (arguably 90% of today's metal bands have roots in a small handful of bands playing 10 years ago). If you really, really crave the melodic thrash, as I do, and you need a new band to fill the coffer, pick this up. Otherwise, keep investigating the back catalogues because there are definitely other bands you haven't heard that are doing the same thing better.

    5 out of 5 stars Quality thrash/ death metal from ex-crown's members!!!.......2006-06-08

I really like this album, with incredible production. The drums are the particular sound here, reminds me a "Black album" Metallica's era. The rythm section is wayyy good, with a solid solos and technical edge. Also, Johan Lindstran vocals were strong.

    1 out of 5 stars .......2006-06-04

And here we have more At The Gates worship in the form of One Man Army and The Undead Quartet (wait, it can't be a quartet since there's five people in the band...). Had this come out 10 years ago, it probably would have created a buzz in the underground. But listening to it in the year 2006, you can't help but think how many times this style of Swedish Death/Thrash Metal has been done to death already. A few interesting solos and the quality drum work is what kept me listening to this, not to mention the crystal clear production that gives the music the room and ambience it needs to flow. Unfortunately, the music is just ordinary. Oh yeah, they have Johan Lindstrand of The Crown on vocals if you're interested.

4 out of 5 stars Corny name, cool cover.......2006-02-25

This is some really good mid-paced thrash. Focus is on the riffs. The singer is from The Crown and does a good job.

Kim Nekroman is the kind of frontman that is so captivating, one cannot help but stare at him during the Nekro's entire set. The guy puts on a hell of a show. When you're listening to this album, picture Kim moving around onstage with that coffin bass like he's making love to it. Correction *like he's F*cking it!" This album is great. Nekrophelia sounds great and the addition of Zombiesax on two songs creates a creapy vibe that they should use more often. The Nekros fly through their set a 100MPH only stopping to pump up the Danish crowd in between songs. The albun starts out a little choppy with 'Nice Day for a Resurection' (not the LP version) and then rolls on in perfect Nekro fashion

5 out of 5 stars Get on your knees and kiss the coffin.......2004-01-23

I didn't find Nekromantix, they found me. Psychobilly infection filled my veins and i was hooked. The first psycho album i bought was Return of the Loving Dead, and this was the second.
As far as live albums go, this is one of the best I've ever heard. The between-song banter is all in german or danish, can't really tell cause I speak neither, but if you can get over that, the rest of the record is english. This was recorded in copenhagen, denmark, hometown to the nekro's, and they play SO well live. This isn't one show, as near as i can tell, but it might be a few different shows put together. If you play bass or guitar and know all the nekromantix clasics by heart, then get ready to be shocked: this is different.
My favorite track and favorite change was made to Howlin' at the Moon, which now has a saxophone. Amazing.
The insert to the CD has some notes from Zorch of the Meteors.

      5 out of 5 stars NYHC Legend.......2004-02-06

After Bobby Steele was booted out of the Misfits, to be replaced by Doyle, he formed the Undead. There were hard feelings and fierce competition between the Misfits and the Undead. The end result was great recordings from both camps. The Misfits were a better band, but the Undead was a close second.
"Dawn of The Undead" has all of the best songs by the Undead. The Undead has a 50's style rock-a-billy sound topped with Steele's gravely, punk vocals. The lyrics are anthems that are made to sing along to, especially "Misfit". "F**kin' people that I see, always f**kin' staring at me!" Steele's lyrics are not horror-movie focused like the Misfits were. He writes lyrics that are more traditional punk, focusing on personal struggles against people and society. "Never Say Die", ""My Kinda Town", and "I Want You Dead" foreshadow the type of attitude Steele has.
Why the Misfits became more popular than the Undead is beyond me. In the very early eighties the Undead was just as big as the Misfits for good reason.

5 out of 5 stars The Undead are he Best I have heard of this kind of music ie.......1999-02-20

Better than the Misfits, I would see this band every night of the week if they ever played-a friend of mine did and said it was worth going a long way from home aand buying a plane ticket to see them Every song on this CD is cool you won't be skipping tracks at all. Buy this!

4 out of 5 stars Quality music we;'ve come to expect from Bobby Steele........1998-11-29

After being kicked out of the legendary band The Misfits Bobby didn't disappear to never be seen again like long lost other misfits members. He went and started his own band The Undead. With only a couple songs on this cd like his "old" band Bobby uses the same misfits sound to create catchy sing along punk rock songs. A must have for any punk or Misfits fan.

that's the play list, sort of, it's different on the album. this album is good but could have been so much better. they are one of the greatest live acts i've ever seen but on this album they chose to overpower beth's powerful voice with static and they cut her off when she is talking to the audience. i'd suggest only hard-core gossip fans get this and directly from the label, dimmak.

Not a bad way to start an album: "It has been established that persons who have recently died have been returning to life and committing acts of murder." The line is from George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, and it kicks off "The Silent Creature" from Deceased's Fearless Undead Machines. A screwball-concept project that revolves around the three Romero Dead films, the record is nearly as tastelessly entertaining as the shopping-mall murder-scene from Dawn of the Dead. And while the lyrics are regurgitated with typical death metal grace, songs like "From the Ground They Came" and "Night of the Deceased" are imbued with striking melodies reminiscent of Running Wild, Mercyful Fate, and even early Iron Maiden. --Jon Wiederhorn

      Album Details

1 out of 5 stars RETURN TO STORE NOW! OR JUST DON'T BUY IT..........1999-08-11

As a serious metal fan for more than a decade, I haven't had to turn many CDs in for a few bucks. However, this one didn't stay in my possession for even a week. Praised by people in chat rooms (maybe that was my first mistake), I bought this album expecting something unique. After all, the cover has a sticker with a note by Fowley that it's for metal fans, played by heavy metal fans, and that it's proudly dedicated to the genre's listeners. Big deal! With the exception of a meager handful of creative guitar riffs, the lyrical content is completely worn-out and the vocal delivery is cheap. The singer is trying to scream/yell and totally fails the attempt to sound scary. The sound quality is awful, and while pace changes are frequent and well-executed, they mostly hack the songs up into several sections with no resemblance to each other. In sum, while the musicianship is decent, the songwriting suffers horribly. Also, the band takes up two pages in the back of the booklet to put down bands like Fear Factory, RATM, and Pearl Jam, all of whom have repeatedly displayed far, far stronger musical ability and production work. Deceased needs to stop telling people to "f... off" and worry about getting their own act together. They've got a lot of work to do... if I could I would rate this album with less than one star, but that's the least I was allowed to give it...

5 out of 5 stars dude, this will wake the dead.......1998-07-02

I fell asleep once while listening to this CD and I dreamt I was on a spaceship jamming with these guys. I dont know how they manage to rock so hard when they play live but manage to smell so nice afterwards. Especially their drummer King Fowley, who emits a succulent strawberry-esque odor after playing. I hate to admit it, but this record kicks butt over my bad Weezer and Rentals albums.
