The latest in an illustrious series that includes Elliott Murphy, Marshall Crenshaw, Paul Kelly, and John Hiatt, Freedy is an exquisite singer-songwriter for the critics to champion and the masses to disregard. Butch Vig's crisp sonics and the restrained, almost old-fashioned rock and folk caress of the music make Johnston's deceptively easy-going tunes easy to fall in love with. "Evie's Tears," "Two Lovers Stop" and "Bad Reputation" are favorites. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars So Blue I Can't Begin To Say..........2007-06-26

I don't often come across many albums that get better with each listen, but this happens to be one of them. Perhaps it's because each time through, I seem to find something new to like about it. Johnston's tales of love and loss, abuse, and suicide quickly pull you in, and often leave you with a very uneasy feeling. But despite the darker storylines, Johnston manages to incorporate a nice mix of melodies into a musical backdrop that is as fresh today as it was back in 1994. My personal favorites are the album's title track and "Cold Again", two of the more melancholy tunes about an absent father attempting reconciliation and homelessness. Easily deserves 5 starts.

5 out of 5 stars The best music has to offer........2006-10-09

I have close to 1000 actual CDs (you know like with cases and booklets and stuff - imagine!), and another several hundred digital recordings
"elsewhere." I also have about 400 vinyl albums and about 250 cassette tapes. I also constantly borrow stuff and seek out new music. I LOVE music; many, many different kinds (as long as it's good!).
Freedy Johnston's This Perfect World is still my favorite. I'm 38. I bought this CD the day it came out. It was my favorite then, it's still my favorite 12 years later. It is pure brilliance. I don't want to go into boring detail, it's just perfect. I can't imagine any human who enjoys GOOD music not loving (at least liking a lot) this recording.
So I don't know who you are or why you're here, but if you don't own this (shame on you!) get it NOW. However you want to do it, just do it. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Forget This One.......2006-04-26

It's a crime that this album did not raise Freedy Johnston to any more than the cult footnote that he is today. An excellent songwriter, Johnston had previously released the stunning CAN YOU FLY? a couple years earlier. With Butch Vig producing and having major label backing, THIS PERFECT WORLD seemed poised to push Freedy into the spotlight. Well, as you know now, it never happened. Still it's a solid album worthy of investigation by anyone who calls themselves a fan of songwriters such as Josh Rouse, Marshall Crenshaw or Elliott Smith.

THIS PERFECT WORLD is an album of uniform quality, that has certain characters and phrases popping up from song to song giving it a strong sense of continuity. To my ears, there's not a weak track on the whole record, with the jaunty BAD REPUTATION, GONE LIKE THE WATER, EVIE'S TEARS and the melancholy title track standing out. Gone, but not forgotten this album, as well as the aforementioned CAN YOU FLY and NEVER HOME are all worthy of investigation.

5 out of 5 stars Another overlooked gem........2004-02-01

The music industry is a funny place. There is often no commonality between true musical talent and record sales. Often the music found at the top of the charts is not the best music available, but instead the most widely played, the most overtly commercial. It's reasoning like this that a fine singer-songwriter like Freedy Johnston is routinely overlooked. Depending on one's perspective - it's a large shame, because Johnston is worth checking out.

A record with a title like "This Perfect World" can likely only be two things: a complete celebration of life, or a piece of art steeped in irony. In Johnson's case, it's the latter. He's written twelve accounts of peaceful melancholy, most often found in the form of detailed character sketches of folks whose lives are anything but perfect. One anonymous narrative voice muses about having a "bad reputation/and it isn't just talk talk talk." Another character, Evie, garners two nods with "Evie's Tears" and "Evie's Garden." Johnston's sound is very understated, similar to that of a Neil Young or Bob Dylan record. It's not a happy record, but in terms of sound, it's very relaxing and peaceful.

Given its timeframe (mid 1990's) it's an interesting footnote to a modern sound which never broke through like a grunge, ska, or bubblegum pop did. One can only wonder if such a songwriter would have been given his due acclaim. In the end, like all art, it's an artifact of particular time period and mood. In the context of the 1990's, it's some of the best music available from that decade, and some of the best music which unfairly never received its due praise. In a perfect world, an artist like Freedy Johnston isn't overlooked. In this one, it makes for a fine story of a fine singer-songwriter, and a fine album overlooked by so many.

5 out of 5 stars We met in a lonely summer.......2003-10-10

"There does have to be some mystery and that's where it is. Everyone's interpretations are different. Everyone's emotions are different." ~Freedy Johnston

I love the way this album takes off from the first song and then the lyrics really take hold of your heart. It is really catchy and the music just swirls around you catching you in each wave and pulling you in. Once you start listening there is no escape, you just want this music to keep playing. I could listen to the first song again and again! There is magic there.

"Cold Again" sounds like a song Sting would love to sing although there are so many added dimensions and a level of acoustic bliss I really liked. I could listen to this music without any words although the harmony between the voices fills out the spaces between the loneliness and isolation.

"Evie's Garden" really paints some beautiful pictures. This song was quite a surprise because at the start, you wouldn't imagine this song being included in this collection. I love the lyrics and longing for the past. This song seems to connect with the lyrics in Evie's Tears.

"In the middle of Evie's garden
In a simple iron chair
Wind's blowing and she is singing
Begs the moon to disappear."
~Evie's Tears

You will hear what you want or need to hear in these stories. A unique collection of stories washing across your mind in waves of music.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-01-30

No matter where you are, this is great music to listen to... in the car, while making dinner, or just sitting and reading a book. I tend to listen to CDs too often and get a bit tired of them, and off to the shelf they go. Not so with this... no matter what... it's just great music! It's on my ipod and in my car so it's always there, and it has yet to get "old".

5 out of 5 stars The Winding Mystery..........2005-09-21

Bill Deasy is probably one of the finest songwriters I have ever encountered. Right up there with JT, Joni Mitchell and Dan Fogelberg in my mind. His entire body of work represents some of the most deeply satisfying, heartfelt wisdom and yearnings from an artist of any era.
The "winding mystery" to those who have discovered this man's genius, is why he is not a big star...But like any good mystery, it is the road of discovery, the journey itself that is of value. Deasy's musical journey has been long and at times convoluted, but ultimately redemptive, and it's clear he is on the right road with this new album "Chasing Down a Spark."
Here we find a hotter, more worldly Bill Deasy, and the tunes overall present the writer's optimistic world view. Lessons learned, wisdom found, forgiveness realized...
From the bluesy rockin' "Wishing Well", to the quiet, plaintive "And I Wait" to the many songs with catchy, hook-filled choruses that compel the listener to join in (Until I Get it Right, Now That I Know What it Means,Turn your Light On), this album has a feel-good quality that refreshes.

Joined by friends in both the writing and the performing (Brian Webb, Teitur Lassen, Molly Bancroft, Jane McCafferty, Rachael Yamagata,Maia Sharp, Scott Blasey, Rob James and more...) Deasy's clearly found the spark and got the fire going...

5 out of 5 stars Turn your light on!!!.......2005-07-30

A few weeks ago i bought Rob Thomas solo cd "something to be". I really liked it. It's the kind of music you listen to and you start to like almost every song from the beginning. And that's the difference! You play it a few times and it doesn't matter wether you play it again or not. "Chasing down a spark" gets better and better with each listening. There's so much to find in it.I might have listened to it for about 80 times the last weeks and i still can't get enough - and i still explore new moods, ideas and intensions. This work - by the man himself Mr.Deasy - isn't just a cd...it's what life is all about. It captures more than you would wish to expect when you buy a cd.
It is silent and loud, happy and sad, dressed and "naked", powerful and weak at the same time. And you keep asking yourself "man - how can one cd do this to me?" I'm still impressed. And i'm still thankful for this work. 5 stars could never be enough! And there could never be enough words to describe it...so take the chance!!!

    Album Description

This is the text from the Pamphlet we are including with the

Ultimate Island Spa mix, "This Time in Between." How to use this CD The program of music on this CD offers an instrumental sequenced journey for healing therapy including preparation of the room atmosphere and the therapist's state of mind and energy level. The music then gently takes the healer and client to deeper and deeper levels of relaxation. After about an hour, the music gently brings the energy level up and leaves all involved with an uplifted spirit of hope and abundance. 1) Start CD. During songs 1&2, Prepare room atmosphere, light candles and incense. Prepare therapy surface. (table or chair) Greet client, ushering into your healing space, allowing her to relax and prepare. (undress, lay down, breathe) 2) Song 3 plays. Therapist returns and begins session. Music is still slightly upbeat but slowly easing the client out of her hectic world and into this time in between. 3) Music slows and stays mellow for the next five songs. Client drifts off to her own comfortable space. 4) With the next three songs, the musical journey begins to turn upward, slowly guiding the client back into a safe space. She is rejuvenated. And with the final song, uplifted yet still in a very mellow space. 5) Therapist and client are both left relaxed and energized.

    4 out of 5 stars 80's power-pop .......2004-12-14

The Hawks were another victim of the unfortunate tendency by record companies in the early 80's to cut bands loose after only two albums, no matter how impressive the albums were. Hawks and 30 Seconds Over Otho were both impressive albums that were critical successes, but only middle of the pack in sales. This collection of outtakes and demo versions is enjoyable enough to make one wonder why nothing has ever been done with the two original Hawks albums. Both were better than what most of us remember as 80's pop, but have never seen the light of day on cd. A band like the Hawks would have been a great candidate for a two-fer reissue by a company like Renassiance Records, but Renaissance is no more. Decent stuff on here if you enjoy the genre, but as far as I'm concerned the demo of It's Alright, It's OK steals the show. Someone knew what they were doing when they muscled up and recut the song for the original album, but the demo still has a certain charm. Not vital by any means, but nice to see that someone still cares aside from me.
