Amazon.com essential recording

What a Crying Shame is more commercial and conventional than its debut predecessor, but every bit as enjoyable. Raul Malo has such a terrific voice that he can wear his broken heart on his sleeve without lapsing into self- pity. In fact, the very act of confessing his hurt seems to charge him with rocking excitement, especially when he gets a melodic hook as juicy as that on the title track or the Roy Orbison tribute, ""I Should Have Been True." Trisha Yearwood sings harmony on the saloon ballad ""Neon Blue," and the band turns Bruce Springsteen's ""All That Heaven Will Allow" into the honky-tonk shuffle it was always meant to be. --Geoffrey Himes

Amazon.com

A simply stunning country album. Granted, the songs here mark a disappointing retreat from the complex emotional truths and social commentary of the band's previous From Hell to Paradise, but with a sound centered around the gorgeous, soaring tenor of singer-songwriter Raul Malo, the newly simplified songs here still manage to convey rich emotional moods. With updated Ray Price shuffles, Roy Orbison-influenced country pop, a crossover cover of Bruce Springsteen's "All That Heaven Will Allow," and catchy Nashville hits like "O What a Thrill" and the title track, What a Crying Shame includes some of the finest mainstream country music of the last 25 years. --David Cantwell

I'm sorry the Mavericks are not collaborating anymore. If they are, maybe someone would let me know.

5 out of 5 stars THE VOICE !!!!!!!.......2006-08-23

Bought this in 1994 when it came out...I absolutly love the sound! Especially "I Should Have Been True"

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2006-01-29

I have had this cd for years and I decided to write this review because The Mavercks have different types of songs from one cd to the next (although The Mavericks have a very distinct sound which separates them from everyone else). The more recent releases have a terrific blend of instruments (includung trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, keyboard, organ, drums, guitars, and so on). This cd does not have all that but they clearly are in a league of their own. Though some country radio stations played a little Mavericks music on the airways, it was obvious that they were not standard by any means. The Mavericks take music to a new level. "Pretend" is one of my favorite songs and compare this version with today's version, which I've heard live. It is available on the "Live In Austin Texas" DVD; unfortunately not on cd. You'll be surprised at the difference. Raul Malo is wonderful on "O What A Thrill" and "What A Crying Shame". Bruce Springsteen's "All That Heaven Will Allow" is covered nicely here. A must have for the collection...

5 out of 5 stars Their most popular album in America.......2005-06-01

Two of the founder members of Mavericks were fans of traditional country music from Florida who knew that they had to play a different style of music to make a living. Their early albums, including this one, were clearly influenced by traditional country but not limited by it. While there are traditional instrument here including fiddle and steel guitar, the credits also include congas, tambourine, organ and other non-country instruments. Nevertheless, the overall feel of this album is country and should please all but the most die-hard traditionalists.

With Raul Malo's superb voice and classic songs such as the title track and There goes my heart, this became (and has remained) their most successful album in America. Most of the songs are originals but the album includes fine cobers of O what a thrill (Jesse Winchester) and All that heaven will allow (Bruce Springsteen). Other highlights include Neon blue (with Trisha Yearwood on backing vocals), Pretend and I should have been true.

Although my favorite Mavericks album is the one that followed this (Music for all occasions) and the one after that (Trampoline) provided the Mavericks with a huge new British fan base, I rate this album very highly.

4 out of 5 stars classic and real.......2003-12-16

With all the glossy, ready-made country flim on the radio these days, some listeners may be yearing for some of the real thing. If so, pick up this older cd by the Mavericks. Raul Malo (lead singer) has an amazing voice, almost haunting, and the band seems to build songs around it. The whole thing grabs you from the start and will keep you mesmerized until the end. Although some of their newer albums lacked the punch of this one, you should still check them out. Word.

Album Description

Lending a hand to the southern California sound of No Shame, Nick Hexum (311), Tony Kanal (No Doubt), and Paul Leary (Sublime/Butthole Surfers) all produced tracks for the album, Pepper's follow-up album to their 2004 debut Kona Town.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Don't listen to these people talking about sublime.......2007-05-28

I hear so many unfair reviews towards pepper because basically they dont sound like sublime or that they are slipping away from sublime, THEY ARE THEIR OWN BAND! THEREFORE THEIR OWN SOUND! DEAL WITH IT.

But this record is a great one just put it in and you dont have to touch the dial , everysong on here has something different to offer.

2 out of 5 stars Huge Pepper fan, not a fan of No Shame.......2007-04-01

Before the relaease of this CD it was described as "Kona Town on steroids" after listening, this cd is Kona Town on estrogen!

I'm a huge pepper fan, own everything that they've released(including DVD's), and have seen them live numerous times. This CD just doesn't do it for me. It is very soft and lyrically weak, girls will probably love it and it will sell but it is not their best. No Cntrol is probably the best song on here; Green Hell and Zicky's song are also very good. Good enough opens with some very promising riffs but lyrically turns into the common "soft" theme of the rest of the cd. The rest are pretty much weak filler and are worth no more than a listen to figure that out. I'm not sure if it was Atlantic records that caused this or what but I hope they can rebound very soon with some new material.

5 out of 5 stars if you liked Kona Town, you will love No Shame.......2007-03-16

Not as fast as Kona Town, but a great overall cd. If you like Pepper's sound, or even if you like Sublime's sound, you will enjoy this cd. one of those cd's you like more the more you listen.

5 out of 5 stars Pepper's strongest release.......2007-02-25

Pepper has been around almost 10 years now, and they have grown better and better with every album. Sure this album is not perfect, but it is their best release and seperates them from all those annoying connections to Sublime. I agree that "Kona Town" may have sounded similar to a Sublime record, but this album is no "Kona Town". Pepper has finally brought out their own, unique sound to "No Shame", and its a damn good one. I love the new direction that Pepper is taking, and hopefully more people will warm up to this great reggae/rock album.

All the tracks on this album are great, with the exception of "Like Your Style" and "Old Time Problem", both of which seem a little out of place. Pepper's reggae beats are infectious and very well produced, like Green Hell and Crazy Love, and their more rock influenced songs are just as impressive, such as No Control and Wanted. The main thing to get out of this album is that Pepper has found their own, unique sound, one that seperates them from Sublime and is a step in the right direction. Pepper, congrats on a great release.

2 out of 5 stars Please, just cover Sublime.......2007-02-21

I apologize for the lack of thoroughness in the review of this record, but I am begging, please, Pepper, just cover Sublime. I like you guys, I like some of the songs on this record and you are fun in concert, but I can't help myself continually feel like that the band should just cover Sublime. Pepper writes some good songs and I can't complain about any of it (drop it at a party on any given summer day and people will all be smiling and grooving with it), but Sublime wrote better songs and the sound of this band is not different enough for me to actually label them anything other than a wanna-be Sublime band.

Sorry. Show some growth or just cover Sublime. 2 and a half stars overall since this album is unoffensive and fun, but it is far from standout.

5 out of 5 stars An Alltime Favorite.......2007-04-07

This is one of the best albums ever produced if you ask me. It's not like I'm a huge Lemonheads fan or anything, but this album is stellar. Even though it's not a sprawling album, in fact I think it comes in at under forty minutes, each minute is worth listening to. I think it's because every song, even if they're not supposed to be, makes you happy. They may even want to make you dance, and I hate dancing. My particular favorites would have to be "Rudderless", "The Turnpike Down", "Hannah and Gabi", and the amazing title track, "It's a Shame About Ray". If you want to listen to something that will make you feel good, listen to this. Oh yeah, there's also a cool cover of "Mrs. Robinson" on this as well. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars It's A Shame There Aren't More As FUN As This by The Lemonheads.......2007-03-31

Believe me This isn't sour candy... "It's A Shame About Ray," was The Lemonheads fifth and best release (June 1992), their Breakthrough Album! It seems like in the early '90s after the metoric success & impact of Nirvana's: Nevermind, that there was a lot of alternative music suddenly gaining the attention that it deserved. A lot of late '80s "alternative" music wasn't heard by most of the mainstream public(bands like The Pixies or Husker Du). By 1992 Alternative was everywhere in Rock, on the radio and all over MTV (back when the channel played more music than TV shows). This is one my favorites from those days.
The Lemonheads at one point were labeled "bubblegrunge" with the sweet harmonic vocals of Evan Dando and Julianna Hatfield (although she should sing more). A fabulous mellow, folky kind of Rockin' sound and this re-release closing track includes a cover of Simon & Garfunkel's: "Mrs. Robinson" - which is a really good faster version compared to the original. Also it was a song in heavy rotation at MTV and all over the radio igniting album sales.
The title track is my favorite song, but all of them are great, catchy and just downright FUN! Other favorites of mine include: "Confetti"...He kinda shoulda sorta would have loved her if he coulda...(what a catchy rhymin' tune) "Rudderless" - "Buddy" (or "My Drug Buddy") - "Allison's Starting To Happen" - "Kitchen"(ooooooh,ba ba badoooooo) - & "Ceiling Fan in my Spoon." -Yes Happy tunes! The only downside to this album is that it's only 33 minutes, and really The Lemonheads only REALLY GOOD album - 5 stars

5 out of 5 stars This CD ROCKS, buy it!.......2006-01-25

What can I say about the Lemonheads, they're one of the best bands I have ever heard. The chords that they use on some of their songs are awesome. Hannah and Gabi is a hard song to play, but I couldn't imagine making that song up out of thin air. I think this cd is among the best EVER. Just listen to the songs, every single one of them I would listen to for the rest of eternity.

1 out of 5 stars It's a shame about the lemonheads.......2006-01-10

After one reviewer clamed this album was "Better than Joy Division! Better than the Smiths!" I was surprised to find that "It's a Shame about Ray" was completely unimpressive music. The Lemonheads are not unique in any way; their music is equivalent to hearing a fly buzz. This album could be a soundtrack to a Dawson's Creek episode. Lyrics are neither appallingly stupid nor heart moving. Anyone playing with Fruity Loops on their P.C. could create a more unique sound than The Lemonheads "It's a Shame about Ray." If you like unmoving, unimpressive, downright boring music, this album is for you.

4 out of 5 stars The world doesn't deserve Evan Dando.......2005-12-31

This is one of my favorite albums of the 90's. Great melodic songs with poignant lyrics. If you listen carefully to the songs, the album is basically a love letter from a scared young man with a drug problem. Kudos to Evan Dando for the courage to record such an honest and open album. Is there any lower-self esteem love song than 'Bit Part'? I'm referring to the original CD that doesn't have the gratuitous 'Mrs. Robinson' cover track, and track 5 is honestly titled 'My Drug Buddy', not the antiseptic 'Buddy'.

Uncle Kracker might have rap-rock numbskull Kid Rock to thank for putting him on the map, but with the release of his solid sophomore set, the Michigan mauler can stand up and take a bow. For not only is Uncle Kracker the most Southern-sounding musician ever to emerge from the edge of the Great Lakes, he's also one of the most versatile. As such, No Stranger to Shame is by turns country, rock, soul, blues, and sometimes a vigorous mix of the lot. The horn-section-goosing opening track "I Do" is pure Stax with a little '70s-era thwacketa-thwacketa guitar menace; "Thunderhead Hawkins," with its drawling vocals and slide guitar, is pure Arkansas front-porch boogaloo; "Memphis Soul Song" is just that; "To Think I Used to Love You" could have been torn from the Merle Haggard songbook; and "Keep It Comin'" is fierce hip-hop. A ballad, "Letter to My Daughters," is sweet if unnervingly sappy (think Bob Carlisle's "Butterfly Kisses"), while Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath adds negligible freight to the title track. But No Stranger to Shame's finest moment is a borrowed one--a faithful cover of Dobie Gray's inspirational rock & roll love letter, "Drift Away." An underappreciated classic from the early '70s, "Drift Away" still sounds relevant, and Kracker's soulful version--featuring Gray himself--will do much to spotlight that comforting old chestnut. --Kim Hughes

I was very pleased with the prompt delivery of the CD I ordered.

2 out of 5 stars Stop making music you piggy-backing tonedeaf wonder.......2006-02-02

Listen to this CD, then listen to anything off "Double-Wide". Notice anything new? Didn't think so.

Yes, the Unc has a good sense of tone and his rhythms evoke the roots of folk, country and R&B simultaneously, for which something must be said. That something comprise my two stars.

In fact, he'd be wonderful if he'd just stop singing.

Indeed, he gets no reward for badgering my aural nerves with "Memphis Soul Song." This annoying detritus is a lot like the movie adaptation of Toni Morrison's novel "Beloved" in that there are so many places it could, and should, end. But NO, it drags on... and on... and ON!

And please, enough with the "Sophisticated Country Boy" routine. Kid Rock tried that, had his moments, and now where is the Kid? He's making the cover of the Onion. That's not necessarily a good career move.

1 out of 5 stars Only one good song..........2005-11-16

There is only one good song on the C.D.! Don't get it, it is a waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars Easily flowing between rock, soul, funk, C&W and rap..........2004-12-04

This is an excellent album. Who would have thought that Kid Rock's turntabilist could put out such a solid effort? This album is very diverse, easily flowing between rock, soul, funk, C&W and rap. He has a nice voice, very reminiscent of John Melloncamp. He even does a duet with Dobie Gray on the classic Drift Away.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars.....Kracker's 2nd album........2004-06-29

Though very, very different from Kracker Double Wide album, i Still Give it 5 stars. This is not hip-hop like Double wide. this is straight memphis soul, Oldies Rock and Country. The Only Rap is the first and last songs. Theres A Bonus track Called AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL.

Best song is THUNDERHEAD HAWKINS.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

    Please buy it.

    5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars This Soundtrack Was Under The Radar.......2005-03-09

This soundtrack was very good, this CD was like what I mention on the Poetic Justice soundtrack. This soundtrack had some star power with artists in hitting or in their prime like Zhane', Silk, Changing Faces, Aaliyah, Tevin Campbell, Hi-Five, & Silk. R-Kelly came with it in one of his best remixes ever of "Homie Lover Friend" with the late Aaliyah singing in the background. Smooth sexy self come in with "Ghetto Style". Also let me not forget some of the underrated rappers from the Big 'O' like Souls of Mischief & Casual who came with it on this soundtrack. Also U.G.K. gave us the radio version of the classic hit "Front, Back, Side to Side", and Mz. Kilo wraps it up on here but her song was not better than the one on Menace II Society soundtrack. Nuttin' Nyce most recognized song "Down 4 Whatever" is featured on here along with newcomer Raja-Nee's cut "Turn It Up". This soundtrack should have gotten more pub but this was during a time when a lot of things were really starting to pop back in late '94 & early '95. Great soundtrack.

3 out of 5 stars pretty good soundtrack.......2004-01-26

I bought this Soundtrack years ago&it sounds alright still.R.Kelly has a cool Re-Mix for "Homie,Lover,Friend"&also his Re-Mix for Changing Faces 'Stroke You Up" is here&also he wrote a New cut for Ayliyah for the Soundtrack. Jimmy Jam&Terry lewis&others are featured on this Soundtrack that blends,New Jack Swing,R&B&Hip-Hop.it stil sounds pretty good.

    4 out of 5 stars Tight soundtrack.......2000-02-06

The producers of this soundtrack should have won album of the year for the mellow cuts that they chose to go on this CD. Everything that I heard I enjoyed and I highly recommend this CD.

    Album Description

The perfect companion piece to the new John Waters film, opening September 24th. From co-star Selma Blair's "Red Hot" and Johnny Knoxville's theme, "Let's Go Sexin'", to the life-changing experience that Tracy Ullman's character experiences while listening to "The Pussy Cat Song", these songs play a prominent role in the film. By the time "Tony's Got Hot Nuts" and "Itchy Twitchy Spot" come on, you know that Waters used extra TLC while selecting these songs. Artists include Screamin' Jay Hawkins, James Intveld, Connie Vannett, Slim Harpo, David Raksin Orchestra, Billy Lee Riley, and many more.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and rare.......2007-02-20

If you loved the film as I did and John Waters' brilliant and fertile mind as I do, this soundtrack is for you. All the full tracks of many songs used in the film, including the lusciously cheesy opening song "Sylvia".

4 out of 5 stars Not for mullet-heads.......2005-08-12

Pretty good but above average intelligence will be necessary to appreciate any John Waters movie.

    5 out of 5 stars Hot Stuff!.......2005-06-21

Not only do these songs work beautifully in the (recommended)film, they all stand up as fine, dirty R&B and rockabilly tracks for your twisted listening pleasure. Your stereo will throb and pulsate to the beat, and so will the appropriate body parts. Buy the CD! Buy The DVD!

1 out of 5 stars The worst movie.......2005-03-18

Gilbert And Sullivan. Eternal names in the musical theatre scene. They were the 19th century British version of Rodgers and Hammerstein or Lerner and Loewe. And this was long before Broadway, when the Savoy was the vogue of musical comedy and the Savoyards were highly popular entertainers. William S. Gilbert provided the libretti and lyrics to the operettas, while Arthur Sullivan, who was a serious music composer in his own right, provided the music. The operettas or light operas they wrote were mostly up-beat social satires dressed up as comedy, very theatrical, historical, inventive, and very patriotic to Brittain. Their works borrowed the opera technique- choruses, arias, ensembles, but as far as plot and content their only serious work was The Yeomen Of The Guard. Other Gilbert And Sullivan hits include Trial By Jury, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado, Princess Ida and The Gondoliers. Gilbert And Sullivan's manager/impresario was Richard D'Oyly Carte.

This recording is only highlights from a 1968 recording (also available on Amazon.com) with the D'Oyly Carte Opera, conductor Isidore Godfrey directs the Royal Philharmonic. In the role of Frederick, lyric tenor Phillip Potter, in the role of Mabel, soprano Valerie Masterson, John Reed as Major General Stanley, Donald Adams as The Pirate King,Owen Brannigan as the Sergeant Of Police, and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer as Nurse Ruth. These singers were at their vocal peaks, and they provide much comedic acting as well. Impressive scenes include the mezzo soprano vocals of Christine Palmer's Ruth as she describes how she mistook "Pilot" for "Pirate" when nursing Frederick (When Frederick Was A Little Lad"), Frederick's plea to the daughters of the Major General to accept him as husband (O Is There Not One Maiden Breast) Valerie Masterson, whose Mabel is the best, singing the coloratura showcase "Poor Wondering One" and her duet in "Stay Frederick Stay" John Reed singing "I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General" is hilarious and a display of virtuosity for this type of singing. The beautiful chorus "O Dry The Glistening Tear" the upbeat "With Cat Like Tread" and the finale are exceptional.

5 out of 5 stars Excerpts And Highlights From The Pirates Of Penzance.......2004-02-04

This cd contains only highlights and excerpts from the 1968 recording by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. For a full recording, check it out on the Amazon.com catalog under Gilbert and Sullivan Pirates Of Penzance D'Oyl Carte Opera. This company was founded by the original impresario and manager of the Gilbert and Sullivan productions in the late 19th century, Richard D'Oyly Carte. Arthur Sullivan, who was a well-known composer, provided the music and William Gilbert wrote the libretti. Their partnership was a match made in heaven, as evident in the success of their many operettas, beginning with the smash hit "Trial By Jury" and even on to the more serious opera "The Yeomen Of The Guard". Nevertheless, Gilbert and Sullivan had different temperaments and did'nt always get along very well. They split up sometime in the 1890's. Other famous light operas of theirs include The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado, Iolanthe, Princess Ida and The Gondoliers. Light opera or operetta was the vogue of the day, especially popular in the Savoy Theatre in London. Although it was not opera, it borrowed much of the opera techniques- namely arias and chorus. The entertainment of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas were very much like Broadway musicals. In fact, one could make the argument that the Savoy was the Broadway long before American Broadway theatre and Gilbert and Sullivan were like an early British form of Rodgers and Hammersteins or Lerner and Loewe.

The Pirate Of Penzance is a beautiful work of art. The sugary and sentimental story is about the exoneration of pirates, who are noble men who have "gone astray" by such authorities as the Major General, his daughters and the Sergeant of Police. Through the course of the opera, Frederick, who was nursed by Ruth and reared by the Pirate King and his roguish band of pirates. When the daughters of Major General Stanley reject his proposals of love, only Mabel consents to love him. But there's a catch. Frederick is in the hands of the pirates until he comes of age but he was born on a leap year and not until 1940 will he be released. The ending is happy and finds the pirates forgivened by the authorities and Mabel and Frederick are happily married.

The singers really deliver a great performance. In the role of the Major General Stanley is John Reed, who by the time of this recording was a veteran singer in the company. He comes off as fatherly, authoritive but cheerful. An especially skilled type of singer is needed for the master song "I am the Very Model Of A Modern Major General". In contrast, a lyric tenderness is required in the final song "Sighing Softly To The River". As mentioned, a lot of this light opera shines with chorus. The excellent choruses include the opening chorus "Pour The Pirate Sherry", "Oh Dry The Glistening Tear"- this one in particular is set to beautiful music and the daughters of the Major General sound heavenly when they sing in chorus, expressive also in their chorus when Frederick sings "O, Is There Not One Maiden Breast ?". Frederick is sung by Phillip Potter, whose tenor voice is lyric and romantic, and it sounds gorgeous when in duet with Valerie Masterson's Mabel, as in the duet that follows "Stay Frederick Stay". Valerie Masterson was the principal soprano of the company and performed in various other lead roles such as Princess Yum-Yum in The Mikado. A well-schooled lyric and coloratura diva, Valerie Masterson extended her repertoire into Broadway and opera- she has sung Violetta Valery of Verdi's La Traviata (in both Italian and in English versions), Adele in Die Fledermaus and even a part in an English version of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung. Valerie has recordings out in stock and available in Amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars Pirates Of Penzance Highlights At A Cheap Price !!.......2003-12-27

For a very reasonable, inexpensive price (around 8 dollars) this cd is a must have for those who have recently taken up an interest in Gilbert and Sullivan. Gilbert and Sullivan were a team of composer and librettist, both Englishmen, from the late 19th century who composed operettas written in the English language and in the spirit of popular folk song of the Victorian period (roughly 1870's, 1880's and 1890's ) The light operas were equally as light in plot and mood- they were cheery, uncomplicated stories, a lot of them set on a naval vessel out at sea. They poked fun at the Victorian way of life, in much the same vein that Offenbach satirized the French of his day during the Second Empire (1860's). Gilbert and Sullivan composed many operettas that still remain popular today, especially The Mikado, The H.M.S. Pinafore and in this case The Pirates Of Penzance. The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company specialized exclusively in the art of Gilbert and Sullivan and have long been regarded as the finest interpreters of the style. In the 50's and 60's they performed live and made a variety of recordings, employing the talents of many outstanding English singers- among them lyric soprano Valerie Masterson.

In The Pirates Of Penzance, Mabel and Frederick are temporarily seperated lovers when Frederick is accused of a crime he did not commit. The plot involves pirates, among them the bass-baritone Pirate King. Light-hearted, bouncy tunes abound in what is considered the direct ancestor to Broadway musicals. The Overture makes use of the chorus "With Cat Like Tread" a march-like, jovial piece of music. The Highlights on this cd include "Pour O Pour The Pirate Sherry", "When Frederick Was A Lad", " Poor Wondering One", "I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General" and the uplifting finale. Valerie Masterson plays the role of Mabel. Her voice is fresh, agile, lyric and she has excellent command of coloratura when warranted, as she sings in "Poor Wondering One". This 1968 recording is in its entirety on the same label with the same singers on a different cd recording.

    4 out of 5 stars A reasonably good abridgement to this ever-popular G&S opera.......2001-03-08

This budget-priced abridgement of D'Oyly Carte's incomporable 1968 PIRATES is a reasonably good way for beginners to get started on the opera itself. The D'Oyly Carte's performance is top-notch and beyond reproach and Isidore Godfrey elicits delicate playing from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The 62-minute playing time gives exceptionl value for money, even though there are scenes I feel should hae been omitted such as Frederic's "Oh is there not one maiden breast" that hold up the action. It would have been ince to include the Act One finale because it reveals what is to come in the second act. To round off, some people think that this performance of PIRATES is far too operatic, but this is Sullivan's original arrangement and not others' work.

Erich Bachman continues his plunge into good ole Americana on the Crooked Fingers' fourth longplayer. This time, it's a Southwestern-leaning record; the opening track, "Islero," is a delightful, mariachi-inspired instrumental. These Calexico-ish touches, however, are primarily window-dressing, as it's not like Bachman's really changed his Springsteen-in-Appalachia style. The album's tunes are all sincere, at times painfully so. These are stripped-down and confessional songs that, while musically good and everything, yearn strongly for better lyrics--either the weighty poetry of a Leonard Cohen or the ironic remove of a Joe Pernice. As it is, the songs seem to sit on the fence, never fully drawing the listener into their tales of love gone wrong. A notable exception is "Call to Love," a straight-ahead burner which sounds more than a little like a collaboration between the Eels and Tom Petty. --Mike McGonigal

    Album Description

Crooked Fingers is Eric Bachmann. On his fourth full-length, he's supported by a cast of returning players from his 2003 breakthrough release, "Red Devil Dawn" and a few new faces who bring a depth and intensity to his songs. Embracing great traditions of American music from Appalachian folk, southwestern blues, country, and good old rock 'n' roll, Crooked Fingers take their place alongside artists as respected as Bruce Springsteen, Calexico, and Wilco, while maintaining a kinship with new storytellers like Songs:Ohia, My Morning Jacket, and Will Oldham.

    3 out of 5 stars 3.5--Crooked Fingers' weakest record.......2006-07-13

While many will enjoy this record (touted by the label as more 'accessible' than earlier releases), I wanted to write a review that addressed what I consider to be this album's place in the Crooked Fingers discography.

Eric Bachmann's voice is gritty and broken-down, and in my opinion is one of those voices that a listener either loves or hates. I love it, but the songs on this album don't put it to its highest and best use. Earlier records fit song-style to voice much better. I.e., those earlier records not only sound less polished, they are songs _about_ being broken-down, left-out, mis-fit (ahem, "crooked-fingered"). Listen to the cover of "Sunday Morning Coming Down" from _Reservoir Songs_ and you will hear what I mean. This album is dominated by driving, anthemic songs that are much more confident, even bouyant. Bachmann's voice seems a bit out of place, especially in duets with sweet-sounding women singers.

It may be argued that this album is a healthy progression of Crooked Fingers' sound, and that is for individual fans to decide. But I strongly encourage anyone new to Crooked Fingers to check out those earlier recordings, if not before this one, at least concurrently.

    3 out of 5 stars OK-ish.......2005-09-05

Part Tom Petty, part Bob Dylan, part Paul Westerberg but with the indie sensibility which should mean that alt.country and lofi fans would be up for it. The addition of the angelic Sarah Shannon on backing vocals was a masterstroke.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!.......2005-07-21

Okay, it's July by now. I think my most favorite cd of this year 2005 will be the newest one from the Walkabouts (which will be released in august) but this one is really, really my number one bij so far!! I love, love love it and keep on listening to it!! Who are you Crooked Fingers? I don't know but I will check it out. Thanks for the wonderfull songs. And to everybody else, buy this beautifull cd!!

Crooked Fingers is one of those bands that I have heard good things about. I was never into Archer of Loaf, but many people who worked in the office with me in the mid 1990s, spoke of them. This is their fourth album. Where was I? The first song "Islero" sounds like Calexico. Other songs like "Weary Arms" and "Call To Love" sound more indie folk and new wave. This album has a similar look to it as the new one by Arcade Fire. Maybe the same designer? Maybe these bands will be playing together a lot soon. This record is supposed to be a new direction for the band. Lara Meyerattken adds vocals to some songs. Much of this album relies on American roots music and western swing. It's a dynamic record. It's a valid statement. It's very artistic and pure.

4 out of 5 stars This guy deserves more recognition.......2005-03-26

I'm not sure I'd call this Crooked Fingers best album but I would call it the bands most consistent. I'm not familiar with "Archers of Loaf", but I am impressed with the evolution of Eric Bachman's writing over the four Crooked Fingers discs. One can't ignore the Spanish influence throughout "Dignity and Shame". My favorite cut is "Twilight Creeps". He talks of a woman named Flower-
"Why does everybody always act so tough, when all anybody wants is to find a friend?
Why is everybody always trying to hide the heart which hidden has no use?"
Strong lyric backed with a Mariachi band and you've got a 5 star song. Other standouts are "Valerie","Destroyer" "You Must Build a Fire", and "Call to Arms" Comparisons to Springsteen, Wilco and Steve Earle as well as Iron and Wine all make sense. He does sound a bit like Neil Diamond vocally, but maybe I only think that because of his kick ass version of "Solitary Man" on "Resevoir Songs". I'm just surprised this guy isn't more than a cult hero. I'd love to see his band live. I bet they put on a good show.
