5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2007-03-27

i like a lot of different music, everything from Ministry and Pantera to Jewel and Britney Spears. so i know music and i like anything with a good sound. when i was 15 the video for "Ready to Go" came out and it was very catchy, so i got Repubica's self-titled CD not long after. every song is great on it and the single "Ready to Go" isn't the best song on there by a long shot. here i am, 12 years after i first heard them, still listening to Repubica's self-titled CD. get it! you wont be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars "And if I stay out late, don't wait up for me".......2006-12-31

Well, I got this CD for the song "Ready to Go." I'd hear it before the opening tip-offs of WNBA games and really liked it. Nobody could tell me who performed the song so, after a long time of asking people and getting frustrated, it occurred to me that I could look up the lyrics "from the rooftops shout it out" and there you go. This CD turned out to be much more than "Ready to Go." In fact, there are 4 other tracks I like almost as well. It is excellent urban, techno, pop music.

"Ready to Go" (5:01): My reason for seeking out this CD. Awesome track! Can't get enough of it!
"Bloke" (4:56): Another of my favorites. There's a dark intensity to this track about this white collar, 9-5 schmuck stuck in his urban world: "I'm gonna take you on."
"Bi*ch" (5:13): And another favorite. A woman empowerment song, sort of: "One dove, two hearts, a free ride, to be who I want to be. One life with one vision. Street life, just for the h*ll of it." She wants everything as the lyrics clearly demonstrate: "I wanna taste the good life. I wanna sip from the Golden Cup." I really like the guitar strumming riff on this track.
"Get Off" (3:57): A quirky keyboard line starts this song off. Good one but not as stellar and addictive as the first three.
"Picture Me" (5:47): Some tribal sounds are found at the beginning leading to a low, pulsating riff. Continues with a techno-tribal sound.

"Drop Dead Gorgeous" (4:30): I love the lyrics to this one! "I know my ex-boyfriend lies. Oh he does it every time. It's just his permanent disguise. Yeah, yeah, but he's drop dead gorgeous." Very catchy. This one will get stuck in your head.
"Out of the Darkness" (3:49): Wow! Awesome track! Another addictive number you will want to play on a continuous loop. This track also has a darker sound as the title implies. Another track about city-life rut.
"Wrapp" (1:45): Short, seductive track: "Wrap my body in you."
"Don't You Ever" (4:00): I like the opening to this straight-up pop song.
"Holly" (4:23): A little more of a rocker here. This song is about Hollywood with the usual urban darkness found throughout this album: "In the Hollywood Bowl of serial killers who cares anyway?"
"Ready to Go (Original Mix)" (5:01): This version has piano instead of the strumming guitar at the beginning and bridge. I love both, but I'm used to the first and really like the opening guitar riff. The piano gives this version a more somber feel, which is nice, too.

2 out of 5 stars Crapola .......2006-06-23

There is a reason why you can get this disc for 1 cent plus shipping, this disc and this band suck big donkey rod. If you can't get Ready to Go out of your head (which I grooved to after watching the video on VH1 Jukebox, the chick looked sooo hot), than get the disc. Just know that you will never replay the other tracks after you hear them once.

3 out of 5 stars Energetic, Fun Pop.......2006-02-27

I must have slept-walked through 1996, because I really only knew "Ready To Go" from the car commericals. I found this CD in the used section and gave it a chance.

I'm glad both the crunchy guitar-driven Americanized version and the rave-ish European version of "Ready" are included-- they're strong bookends for the opening and close of the album. The other songs are a mixed bag; some of them sound like they belong on Madonna's dance-era albums.

Saffron sounds bored singing "Picture Me" but I think it's one of the more interesting songs... as it gives the other musicians a chance to gel with something different, at a softer mood and pace.

I agree with the earlier comment to keep this album handy, if you have any exercise equiment in your house. You'll get a workout!

5 out of 5 stars Ready To Go?.......2005-08-04

I remember how thrilled I was to hear this when it first came out. Almost a decade later and it is still a hot album! It is full of great tracks, energetic tracks, and a few sexy tracks. This is a cool album to have. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars NO GOOD! KEEP AWAY!!!.......2003-12-23

Yeah, great songs on here. Only problem is that the members of republica didn't even know about it until AFTER it came out, so I won't be buying it. If you're interested in Saffron (the lead singer), check out S W A R M, her new project. Ciao.

5 out of 5 stars What happened?! I was "ready to go" for a 3rd album!.......2002-08-23

Republica's self-titled album (1996) is one of my favorite listens, every track flows together and connects styles, energy, and unique vocal flavor. I love Saffron and I enjoyed their follow-up "Speed Ballads." I'm only saddened that this Best-Of collection seems to imply that they won't be putting anything else out.

If you have the CD's, it's a waste of money. But if you don't, it's a cheap way to get lots of great electronica songs you'll get addicted to fast. I don't know what's going on with the band, but I'll cross my fingers anyway that maybe they will release something new at some point.

5 out of 5 stars Best of... ??.......2002-08-05

My best guess is that somebody needs some spending money, because they only have 2 CDs out to begin with (which are both excellent). There are only a few songs missing, if you have one of the CDs already, just buy the other one instead of wasting money on this.

5 out of 5 stars Un gran exito de Ilegales otra vez!.......2007-01-10

This CD is definetly better than the last CD "In The Room" from 2004. This CD is a perfect mix of merengue, reggaetón, salsa, and bachata. "La Monta Buena" sets a hip, smooth mood with reggaetón and then "Te Necesito" and "Una Noche De Amor" jumps off the album with some salsa bachata heat. "Mátame" is the only real ballad, which I find okay. "La Otra" is a wonderful bachata song and "Cojelo Suave" is a great reggaetón track. "Dale Lento" is an irresistble salsa track that one must dance to! "Me Tienes" I really could not put a genre on, but, I really don't like this song like the others. "Como Puedo" is a better ballad, with a bachata rhythm, compared to "Mátame". And, the merengue finally saves the heat of the album in the end with "Ooh Ay" and "Si Te Picas". "Pa Nosotros" is okay, I like the version on "In The Room" (CD) better and "Pa La Olvidoso" is an awesome track para la máquinta! Es indispensable que condujas con esta canción en la coche! Otherwise, it is really hard to stop from dancing to this album and "Me Tienes" serves as a good break track if needed anyway. I could see many of these tracks being popular at a dance club. So, I suggest for anyone who likes merengue, bachata, salsa, and reggaetón. I especially suggest this CD (and "In The Room") for someone who is new to the Latin world of music. The blend of the music styles are very natural and this CD is definately like the "next step" from "In The Room". Buy this CD!

Alongside son and merengue, Republica Dominicana tightly focuses on the unmined treasure of bachata music: a particular style of Cuban music featuring intense African percussion, wily ringing guitar, and exotic Iberian-flavored melody. First on the bandwagon of what's sure to be an international explosion, Putumayo brings a fresh and exciting sound to fans of Afro-pop, Cuban, and various Latin music. A sampler rather than a cumulative compilation, Republica Dominicana highlights genre superstars from Juan Luis Guerra to Chichi Peralta and stylistic forefather Ramon Cordero, offering the listener choice cuts from which to further explore bachata and its relations. As with all the label's releases, this disc comes with extensive and finely detailed liner notes. The other side of the coin, in a manner, Republica Dominicana in its contrast of dark and light is especially recommended for fans of 1999's Putumayo Presents Cape Verde. --Paige La Grone

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for!!.......2007-04-15

Well, I was looking for more of the classic bachatas and meregues. I was hoping to hear artists like El Ciegito de Nagua and Cuco Valoy. Those are some of the true legends in "perico ripiao"(which is the classic merengue) and bachata. This cd doesn't sound like it's all dominican, but more of a compilation of whatever they could fill it with.

1 out of 5 stars Music you've never heard--for a good reason.......2006-06-23

This CD claims to have the "best music you've never heard." It's not one of Putumayo's best."Tranquila","Pegao de Que","Anoche","Immenso Amor"&"Lo Que Paso a Juan" are catchy tunes;each one unique."Tranquila" counts as Latin easy listening.Unfortunately, most of the tracks sound the same.

If you're looking for fun Latin music, get yourself a Bebel Gilberto album,or anything Brazilian.Putumayo's Brazilian compilations are flawless and a SURE THING when you're looking for,as Putumayo's CEO Dan Storper says,"All hits,no filler."

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2005-10-05

This really is a great collection of (primarily) bachata songs, by a wide choice of great musicians, mixed with one or two more traditionally Dominican merengues. The songs are very well picked, excellently produced and combine a great latin feel of 'Ron y Baile' with the traditionally sensual, happy undertone of Bachata. So no, if you're looking for merengue, search elsewhere. If you're looking for a fantastic CD of great Bachata's, buy this CD and enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars A nice cd but not exclusively Dominican...per se.......2004-04-08

I bought this cd a few years ago because I recognized a few of the artists on the cover but I was surprised with myself that I couldn't really recognize the other artists. However, once I heard the music I knew why. The music is "tropical" but I would not say Dominican. I think if you consider the cd from that perspective it's nice. It has a nice mix of tropical sounding music but the bachatas are weak. Good artists- Raulin R & Luis V but the songs could have been something more representative of bachata "del pueblo" which better identifies Dominican culture. I don't know what criteria Putamayo uses when combining these cultural compilations but they have to ensure that the music is a true representation of the people and it's culture. Like I said as a tropical cd (and that's how I rated it) it's okay. As a Dominican cd...it needs to have more authentic merengue & bachata.

1 out of 5 stars Noooooooo..........................!!.......2003-07-28

I consider this CD as barely of Dominican nature, musically. Although the Cd is composed of Dominican artist, it seems that only rythms other than Dominican folklore were selected for this album. The only artist that artistically represents a pure Dominican rythm is Chi Chi peralta, Fernando Echavarria and him are the originators and creators of the "Meren-son" a mxture of merengue and Dominican son. Basically, all the songs are not purely of Dominican nature, they are mixture of rythms, all influenced entirely by cuban music. To better understand Dominican music, I would advise you to listen to the following artists:

**Juan Luis Guerra(merengue & Bachata)
*Sergio Vargas(merengue)
Jossie Esteban(merengue);(the older the CD, the better he is)
*Los hermanos Rosario(merengue)
*Johnny Ventura(merengue)
*Luis Vargas(Bachata)
*Luis Segura(Bachata)
Anthony Santos(Bachata)

These are just a few artist that you will fall in love with.

5 out of 5 stars perhaps the most beautiful disc ever.......2003-11-02

    wow.

this single is good stuff from 1996 [a great year for music in my honest opinion]. it may only consist of 2 tracks
the "single version" & "original mix" of "ready to go" but
still...its great. the "single version" is more rock driven, while the "original mix" is more electronic. even though the lyrics are the same, the music doesn't and so it sounds like 2 different songs.

but beautiful part of this single are not the songs...
but the disc itself. it resembles a clear vinyl 45 except
in cd form. the outside of the disc is clear & see through
while the middle contains the music. it is perhaps the most
beautiful disc i have ever seen [i have seen nice artwork
on many discs, but this...no other cd looks like this].

if you ever see this disc...
    you should consider getting it.
