Early in her career, Leontyne Price formed an artistic liaison with Samuel Barber that resulted in his composing the female lead in Antony and Cleopatra for her. The disastrous premiere of that opera prevented Price from making a complete recording--a tragic loss in my opinion. She did record excerpts, however, and we at least have this disc to document these and the many other Barber works that she performed with incomparable artistry. Opera singing being what it is, Price didn't often have the chance to sing in English, so these performances are not only historically important, they are uniquely communicative as well. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-28
Only a few of Barber's song texts come from American sources; more often he chose the work of Irish or English writers. He was drawn to 'Knoxville: Summer of 1915', a reflection of the American poet James Agee, because for him it vividly evoked his own childhood. With hints of blues and gently shifting rhythms, "Knoxville" is a mature expression of Barber's artistry as a musical poet and a master of orchestral color.
"The Hermit Songs" were first performed by Leontyne Price, soprano, with the composer at the piano at the Library of Congress, Washington,D.C..pn October 30, 1953. They are a setting of anonymous Irish texts of the eighth to thirteenth centuries written by monks and scholars. They are small poems, thoughts or observations, some very short, and speak in straightforward, droll, and often surprisingly modern terms of the simple life these men led, close to nature, to animals and to God.
I think a brief quote from one of my favorite of these Hermit songs sums up the kind of prose contained in most all of them: from 'The Monk and his Cat' :Pangur, white Pangur, How happy we are Alone together, Scholar and cat. Each has his own work to do daily; for you it is hunting, for me study......'
The music on this disc is well executed, and if you are a Barber advocate, it's a great collection of his song material. I happen to like MOST of his music, but it's for me a 'mood ' thing. He was born very close to where I live, so I guess I feel a kinship of sorts. I do think that he is one of the 'greats' in contemporary music!
An American Voice of the Century.......2005-10-09
The "Knoxville" is beautifully judged - soft and swinging to start, then opening up into the drama and poetry of the middle and late sections. The Eleanor Steber original commission will always set the standard, but Price expands it that much farther, with longer phrases, and an ineffable langour that both she and Steber identified as the "Southern" stamp on this music. It's universal, as far as I am concerned, but it exalts and breaks the heart at the same time. Agee and Barber drink from the same fountain here.
I have never heard the entire "Anthony & Cleopatra", again written for Price, so I can't judge the work as a whole, just these two numbers. I have a special affection for the first scene, however - "Give Me Some Music" shows Price, in her absolute vocal prime, complete mistress of color and mood, and the motive, "My man of men" reappears in her final, regal, death scene. When she sings "O happy horse/ who bears the weight of Antony!" - I swear, my hair curls, no matter how many times I hear it.
In short, gotta have it.
An Essential Barber Disc.......2002-03-13
The recording of Knoxville: Summer of 1915 is arguable the best of those available. Ms. Price sings with great sensitivity and Thomas Schippers and the New Philharmonia provide excellent support. Ms. Price said that Knoxville reminded her of her own childhood, and her commitment to the music comes through. I have the recording of Knoxville sung by Eleanor Steber, who commissioned this work, but I have always regarded the Price recording as the one to have.
The two excerpts from Antony and Cleopatra are of great interest since Ms. Price sang the role of Cleopatra at the premiere in 1966. Her performance here, also conducted by Schippers, is wonderful. The transfer to CD of these recordings is excellent. Perhaps the only down side is that the Hermit Songs were performed before an audience so there is applause between each song. After a while, this becomes monotonous. This disc is a must for anyone interested in Barber's music, and in particular for Knoxville.
Price sings songs and arias written for her!!!.......2001-12-05
Fab voice, OK music.......2001-08-07
Knoxville 1915 is a much better piece than Hermit songs and has more lyrical moments, but it still sounds so modern. If it has just been an orchestral piece it might've been fabulous but that is unfortunately not the case. It's almost as if Barber wrote a piece for orchestra and wrote a seperate piece for voice and just joined them, whether they made sense together or not. Unlike Hermit Songs, Price's performance more than makes up for the lack of brilliance in the music. Her diction is amazingly clear, even Callas would be jealous and her voice soars, where the music allows her to at least.
The selections from A+C are worty enough, another unreal performance by Price, one wonders if there was a better interpretor of American Music ever, maybe Steber. These works are more traditional sounding and thus go over better, but they seem a bit bland, without Price infusing them with energy this listener would have lost interest

The Earlier Iced Earth Albums done right!.......2006-12-19
Gone are the god awful vocals and poor sounding recordings of those first few releases. They have been replaced with sonic happiness.
Here we have Matt Barlow (Iced Earth's best frontman ever) belting them out like no other can. The passion he brings in his delivery is just righteous. With his vocal ability and Jon Shaffer's guitar/songwriting you get a formidable duo to say the least.
The song selection is top notch as they've basically re-recorded the songs that are the most catchy from those early releases. Basically the hits if you can call them that? Anyway the point is this really, yes those older tunes rocked with other guys singing, but now they sore above the crowd with Matt at the helm and that my friends makes a world of difference. He just brings these tunes to life!
This in a nut shell, is what this collection of earl Iced Earth tunes is about. Reworking older songs and giving them new life.
A very enjoyable listen in every way!
P.S. Buy the 2 cd collection. You get more tunes overall and it's just a better deal all-round.
Classic Iced Earth Revisited.......2006-07-27
Days of Purgatory revisits songs that initially appeared on the first few Iced Earth albums Enter the Realm, Iced Earth, Night of the Stormrider, and Burnt Offerings. Aside from Burnt Offerings, all of the early Iced Earth material suffered from barely adequate vocals. That changed when the mighty Matt Barlow came on board. His powerful voice became as much a part of Iced Earth's brand of thrash-based power metal as Jon Schaffer's lightning riffs.
Days of Purgatory gives Barlow a chance to put his own stamp on the early Iced Earth songs, and believe me it makes all the difference in the world. Instead of cringing when you hear a song like "Angels Holocaust" you'll be banging your head like you're supposed to. No more ball-squeezing vocals! Days of Purgatory also benefits from better sound technology than what was originally available to the band, so the songs sound better than ever.
If for some bizarre reason you actually prefer those early albums and vocalists, then you'll probably want to skip this collection. For the rest of Iced Earth fans, Days of Purgatory is a mandatory purchase. It's also an ideal jumping on point for new Iced Earth fans, as it gives you a nice overview of the band's work.
NOTE: Days of Purgatory was originally released in the US as a single disc. It has since been reissued in its original 2-disc format. Do yourself a favor and get the 2-disc version.
"Enter the Realm".......2004-04-07
Reincarnations of Perfection.......2003-09-07
Now, for the album itself: DAYS OF PURGATORY is a collection of various songs spanning from various times in Iced Earth's then twelve-year reign. However, this is no "best-of" album; this is a RE-CREATION of songs. Now for a VERY brief history lesson.
From their earliest days, when they were known as Purgatory, through when they released their self-titled debut album in 1991, Iced Earth featured a less-than-perfect singer, Gene Adam; he sometimes was capable of reaching notes worthy of Halford (Judas Priest), but generally, he sounded like he was dying. Jon Schaffer, Iced Earth's seminal member (he writes and controls just about everything in the band, not to mention is the only member who HASN'T left yet), felt that Adam simply did not have the right vocals, so he recruited a new singer, John Greely in later 1991. Iced Earth released their sophomore album, NIGHT OF THE STORMRIDER, in 1992, and again, though Greely had fair talent (far better than Adam), he just wasn't right for the band (plus, he was difficult to work with), and again, they let go in favor of a better singer...and "better singer" is an understatement.
Enter Matthew Barlow, who debuted as Iced Earth's vocalist on 1995's BURNT OFFERINGS (my favorite album to date, I'm pretty sure). He sang in a deep, baritone voice (but has incredible range - his ultra-high screeches are chilling), and would record another album, 1996's THE DARK SAGA, before the idea occurred to Jon to re-create many of their original songs featuring the two former less-than-perfect singers. And not only that, but to remaster them, maybe re-MIX a few, and in some cases add new layers of guitars, bass, or drums. And what we get here is a terrific walk-through of some of the best tracks from Iced Earth's earlier years.
Barlow, without a doubt, is one of the best metal singers (or ANY kind of singer, for that matter) of all time. Besides sounding cool, he really puts EMOTION into his singing; he growls in angrier moments, croons in storytelling, wails in anguish, and howls with such haunting evil. Such a dark but beautiful singer, he is; and to hear these songs being performed EXACTLY as Schaffer had planned all along. Not to mention some songs are easier to understand now!
Standout recreations would have to include "Colors," "Angel's Holocaust," "Nightmares," "Iced Earth," and "Desert Rain." The remasters from BURNT OFFERINGS are all terrific choices, especially the epic "Dante's Inferno," a dark, brooding, 16-minute journey "...through the nine plains of hell," and one of the ultimate masterpieces from Iced Earth.
Perhaps the one and only complaint I have about this album is in "Angel's Holocaust." In the original version, John Greely belts out a screech that sends chills down my spine every time (right after "...born again of a thousand lies"); here, Matthew Barlow merely wails in a high-pitched tone. I only wish that he had given it his all - because when Barlow screeches, he SCREECHES.
And finally, my favorite track on this album would have to be "Cast in Stone." Originally, this song (from the 1991 debut) was called "Written on the Walls," and featured lyrics written by Gene Adam. I've never really taken the time to interpret those lyrics, but they've never really stood out to me anyway (perhaps because of Adam's voice was all? I do, after all, find it so irritating when he croaks, "written on the walls...the walls" in the bridge of the song). However, when recording this album, John Schaffer must have been unable to get Adam's permission to reproduce the vocals, and so, Matthew Barlow steps forward and dedicated his infrequent but talented songwriting to the reproduction of this song. Now THIS is interesting: a story of a race of creatures that existed before mankind, and as the latter race began to emerge, the former had to go into hiding, being turned into stone by day and lurking free at night (gargoyles, perhaps?). This is also one of their most progressive songs: it starts off as almost pure thrash, then becomes just plain heavy, then gets lighter, quieter...Barlow growls in spoken words of the fury and plotting of these creatures over mid-tempo drums and bass, and soon some guitars come in to thrash things in the same time, and then...the song becomes briefly acoustic, the guitars strumming as Barlow croons a warning that the creatures shall survive. Such a chilling, wonderful song, and the ultimate one from this collection.
Sadly, Matthew Barlow left the band in the summer of 2003. When September 11 occurred, he was, along with many, many people in the world, filled with grief and fury. He was distracted in the studio; he wasn't giving his full performance while trying to record their latest studio album, THE GLORIOUS BURDEN. He ended up quitting the band, feeling that he wasn't helping anyone by singing for a rock band that he didn't even do much songwriting for.
LUCKILY, Jon Schaffer recruited a new singer...former Judas Priest singer (after Rob Halford left), Tim "Ripper" Owens. He sings in a drastically higher voice than Barlow, but he has just as much range, power and emotion. THE GLORIOUS BURDEN was completed in July 2003, and it will be coming out by the end of the year. October 7 will see an EP featuring the BURDEN single, "The Reckoning," and Iced Earth will begin their Glorious World Tour.
So now DAYS OF PURGATORY is available in all its glory to the US. It is an absolute must for not just collectors, but for growing fans of the ultimate heavy metal band. LONG LIVE ICED EARTH! The Revolution is coming...

CD was missing!.......2007-02-22
This was my first Iced Earth experience, I bought this CD because of the rave reviews on Amazon. However, I wasn't blown away with CD#2. These guys have talent but I just wasn't moved as I am with early Maiden or Metallica. It's ok if your looking for something new and different, but this will be my last Iced purchase.
Note: I just picked up another copy (to replace the one that was missing.) When I put CD1 in the player it made funny whirring noises. All of my other CD's (and CD2) play fine without any noise. On the 3rd attempt the noise stopped and it played fine. However, it's possible there was a manufacturing defect with CD1 - hence the missing CD on my first purchase. If not, they may be using real cheap CD's. I would back up your copy immediately after purchase.

Excellent sound!.......2006-07-20
I read somewhere that its some older songs re-done with new vocals, I'm not really sure about it. But I must say I was impressed with both the songwriting, and the cool guitar sound (someone once described it to me as a 'galloping' sound). I knew the guitarist was good from Demons&Wizards but he really shines here on Iced Earth. But the vocals were what I really really loved about this album; especially on the song Winter's Night...it works out so well.
Iced Earth is great...they really remind me of Iron Maiden, but a little more 'metal.' I'd highly recommend this album.

Edge of Sanity: not only a melodic death metal band.......2004-01-17
Back to Purgatory Afterglow... I consider this one a perfect transition album from the band's older American death metal style to their more prog-driven motives. Musically this album shows a lot of potential growth and maturity in the way that it balances power, anger, lyrical depth, and musical complexity almost perfectly. Considering that Dan was only 21 when he wrote this album, this is a great piece of work. The sharp intelligence, clear vision, and genuine warmth in every song on this album proves that Purgatory Afterglow is a sadly overlooked offering from one of the most underrated (yet amazing) death metal bands ever. Also feel free to check out my more in-depth review for this album on Amazon [Purgatory Afterglow].

Persuader... Who? PERSUADER!.......2006-09-08
You'll Buy This If You Know What's Good For You.......2006-04-24
Anyone familiar with music these days will know that there are lots of bands out there, all of which are vying for attention. Unfortunately, most of them suck. The few standout bands are the ones who take familiar musical elements (in this case, metal elements) and use them to shape something uniquely pleasant. Persuader is one of the few bands (along with the more familiar Nevermore and Iced Earth) to do that.
This album is an excellent mix of power metal, thrash metal, death metal, and even nu metal (at times) to create something that though sounds a lot like Blind Guardian (mostly in the vocal department) is still very effective. One can think of it as a more aggressive version of Blind Guardian perhaps.
The overall technical talent isn't always the most stunning; they're no Cryptopsy, but one could do much worse, and besides, the originality more than makes up for the fact that they don't play the same speed melody like Dragonforce does. The vocals, other than the Blind Guardian soundalike, are more than capable, never showing strain.
I've heard this band be compared to power metal bands like Hammerfall, but truthfully, Persuader is much better. In fact, labeling them power metal is a crime against humanity because they're much more than that. If you're a metal fan and appreciate a fresh dose of originality in a stale overcrowded genre, you owe it to yourself to get this.

Persuader: Evolution Purgatory.......2004-09-15
Album:Evolution Purgatory
Record Company:Sanctuary (Noise)

I sucked. It's true, sadly, Brethren-- I did not have the Persuader cd, and by not having it, was reduced to a state of suckfulness. Now thanks to the Abrasive gods, I HAVE this aforementioned disc and I SUCK NO MORE. It's painfully simple-- if you don't have this cd, YOU SUCK. Have it=Don't Suck.
I have a short list-- my Abrasive top 10-- and so far it was occupied in only two spots-- #1 and #2, and only by Havochate and Hammers of Misfortune. Add this to the list, and tied for #1, this is the tightest, most s#*t-together metal I've heard this year. This is a disc that has all the elements of what is PYOOR and TROO about metal. Three tracks into "Evolution Purgatory" and I was nearly gushing-- something we know all barbarians are genetically incapable of. Persuader is the perfect marriage of power/prog and old school thrash. Driving, hooky guitar licks, committed thrash breaks and steroided-up, hyper aggressive vocals. Working again from a promo disc, I don't have a band roster to praise these lads individually, but collectively these youngsters can make music to sack an empire by.
Persuader attacks with all the fury of their current peers, namely Destruction and The Haunted. The guitar work has the jackbooted precision of mid-career Slayer. There is a balance struck between the need for pure shredding and heroic, cascading, tumbling solo breaks. The most outstanding part of this disc, however, lies with the vocals (gasp!). Yea, I did say vocals. I make sport of many a power/prog vocalist more often than not, and always for lack of originality, but I can't find a single thing to fault here, either stylistically or in arrangement. The tracks are arranged in traditional power form, including breaks to chaingang choruses, but the harmonies are well-understated. Persuader's lead voxman seethes with an urgency and maniacism befitting Blackie Lawless on a good day. His parts are punctuated with a spitting scream that drips an uncommon amount of venom and menace-- perfect.
With the firepower of the almighty Sanctuary Records behind them, Persuader deserves to go far, for as long as they continue to churn out the PYOOR and TROO metal. And it don't get much more PYOOR than this, brethren. GET THIS DISC. DON'T SUCK. A rare find-- a perfect album. Ogg the Brabarian gives "Evolution Purgatory" five bronze shields out of five

So infectious and driving.......2004-07-05
The tunes are simple, accessible, sing-along rockers that engage the listener from start to finish. Guitarist Robert Striegler delivers vocals that are crisp and heartfelt, carefully parceling the archetypal rasping and hiccupping that too often detract from the music. Instead he lets his hollow-body Gretsch do the talking, whether the language is the Dick Dale surf of "Ann Bowman", the train-rhythm chirping of "Gypsy", or the avant-psychobilly reverb of "Mean Go Getter".
Bassist Pat McGraw slaps and plucks a solid foundation throughout, often sneaking into the spotlight for breaks, runs, and arpeggios worthy of a second, third, and hundredth listens. His work on "Gypsy" really delivers the juice; call him the Edelbrock carbs of this straight-8 combo.
The chassis holding it all together is drummer Bernie Fox, playing understated shuffle beats and 4-square rhythm that perfectly accent the sweet and saucy tunes. His tick-tock work on "Texas Time" is indicative of his skill, keeping the beat and filling the breaks with equal aplomb.
The entire collection of original compositions is so consistently excellent it's impossible to pick a favorite; every listen catches a different mood, offering greater appreciation of the diversity and authenticity of each song. So whether you're feeling like a "Rockabilly Zombie", chasing a "Hot Rod Queen", or bemoaning your "Hard Knocks", this record is right for you.
