Few side projects have ever proven so disastrous. When Duran Duran bassist John Taylor and guitarist Andy Taylor formed the Power Station in 1985, it not only toppled their other band's domination over the pop world but cast a dark cocaine and slap-bass cloud over the entire decade that didn't shake off until Miami Vice was cancelled and Nirvana arrived. But that wasn't all. Superstitious types believe that resentful Durannies set a curse on singer Robert Palmer, Chic drummer Tony Thompson and producer Bernard Edwards that eventually sent them all to early graves. Two decades on, all that is swept aside and what remains is the music: Self-indulgent and superficial, yes - and, with just eight songs, in such small portions. But, in retrospect, the Power Station is also unexpectedly forceful and funky, particularly with "Some Like It Hot" and a cover of T. Rex's "Bang A Gong." --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2007-01-11
This was a great album back in the day and is a great CD now. The reason it's not a 5-star is that some of the bonus tracks (Michael Des Barre??!!!) are really horrible. Be ready to hit the next button. Sometimes you just need to remove the things that don't add and could hurt; a bonus track isn't always a bonus. The remixes are OK but not better than the original songs, which are hard to top.
The DVD is a great despite the poor film quality. Actually, the poor film quality just adds to the nostalgia of early MTV, so it's almost a bonus.
Awesome VIDEOS!.......2006-08-04
To my knowledge this is the only place the PS videos have been released and they come with some fun in-between interviews I'd seen nowhere else. It's great transfer quality and worth every penny even if it just came with the DVD. Since it includes the full original CD *PLUS* additional bonus tracks, this is just an AWESOME FIND!
Some Like It Hot.......2006-05-09
Whilst fellow Duran members Simon,Nick & Roger wasted their time recording the Arcadia album, John and Andy went off with Robert Palmer and Bernard Thompson to form the Power Station. This is a great album and almost overlooked in the 80's. The four members fuse together as if they were a seasoned band. T-Rex's 'Get It On' looses nothing of the edginess and rawness of the original. 'Some Like It Hot' pumps blood through your veins and the relaxed 'Still In Your Heart' is as good a Robert Palmer delivery as ever. As a side-project, this was an outstanding piece of work and still sounds as fresh today as it did first time around. This is not Duran Duran, this is good pop-rock with a bit of soul thrown in for good measure. One album just wetted my apetite, then they went back to their day jobs..
A classic 80's album.......2006-04-23
Say what you want but I still think this is one of the best albums of the 80's. Its harder edge adds to its appeal and really shows the talents of everyone involved. Robert Palmer's vocals show the beginnings of what was to come from one of the most versitile vocalist of the era and Tony Thompsons drums just blow you away with sheer power. John and Andy Taylor play a grittier, funkier style than what they did in Duran Duran which makes the album such a classic to me. I particularly love the fact Andy got to show his stuff on this album, the man is truely an underated guitarist, but his power really shows especially on songs like "Go to Zero" and "Harvest for the World". A must have album also check out Living in Fear also a great album.
Don't knock it. These guys can Rock!.......2006-03-24
The above editor obviously didn't get the whole picture when he so indescriminately mislabeled The Power Station as a disaster. I was thrilled there was a re-release of the album, especially considering a bonus DVD with rare footage was attached. My VHS tape has finally been retired. Duran Duran split for a reason. They had spent every waking moment with each other for many years. There is bound to be some tention. They didn't topple themselves as the reigning Kings of synth-pop by forming Arcadia and Power Station. They ended up pumping out even more hits independently. Arcadia's "So Red the Rose" was a masterpiece and the Power Station produced great dance tracks. Albeit, "Bang a Gong" was a re-make, but the band put a different spin on the song, unlike the re-makes out today where the bands basically copy everything exactly. Give credit where it's due. This album is great and deserves to be revisited. To the readers: Buy it. It will do you good to go back to a time when music was fresh and exciting. This album will take you there. Be sure to pay attention to John's innovative bass lines and Andy's phenomenal (yet totally underrated) guitar licks.

Rock at its best.......2007-05-06
Every song on this album is a masterpiece. Robert Palmer's vocals, paired up with Andy and John Taylor's beat, are meant to be heard. Their remake of "Bang A Gong" is better than the former. This music makes you want to move and groove. It will put you in a great rockin' mood.
Power Station... Powerful and more powerful.......2005-10-30
This was one hell of an amazing collaboration, Robert palmer plus the guitarist and bassist from Duran Duran, as well as the extremely talented Tony Thompson. From beginning with Some Like it Hot to the end, the album just explodes with all kinds of power and just incredible guitar rock thanks to the very talented Andy Taylor who just holds nothing back in any of his solos. John Taylor also of Duran Duran had to himself get some learning to play his bass better than ever on this album, he does and Tony Thompson definitely makes this album come alive especially in the very strong and energy driven beats of "Some like it hot". Whether you're a rock or Duran Duran fan, you MUST get this album or you're doing yourself a huge disservice.
The definitive supergroup!.......2005-05-22
Most supergroups fail. Take a look at Audioslave, in which Chris Cornell and the rejects from Rage Against the Machine made a disastrous album of fake "alternative" rock. The Power Station, on the other hand, is a different story. Robert Palmer with John and Andy Taylor of Duran Duran made history by making one of the most hotly anticipated albums of all time. Throw in drummer Tony Thompson and you've got a record that will give you goose pimples. Duran Duran is a brilliant group to begin with but they take it to a whole new level with classics like "Some Like it Hot." Well, this whole album is "hot," and it shows why Duran Duran is the most in-demand group around. Oh, I could listen to this CD a thousand times and never get bored. This is the way a REAL rock record should sound like.

If you are a fan of Duran Duran, you may already know this, but John & Andy Taylor are planning on celebrating the anniversary of this album with a deluxe package. The new version will include a number of bonus tracks, including all the 7" and 12" mixes of the singles Communication, Some Like It Hot and Bang A Gong (Get It On), and the very rare Michael Des Barres song from the film Commando. As if that weren't enough, it will also come with a DVD that will include the making of the album featurrette aired on MTV, as well as one of the two live performances they did with Robert Palmer for Saturday Night Live to promote the album. A great treatment for a sadly forgotten gem. This was the album that solidified Duran Duran as good players (as opposed to just 5 cute guys on a poster), and reignited Robert Palmer's carreer.

Why bother?.......2005-08-12
This collections gives you 7 of the 8 tracks from the 1985 Power Station album - at that rate, just buy that album. Moreover, it only features one track from the much better 1996 Power Station album 'Living in Fear'.
I'd only recommend getting this if you are really keen on getting the other tracks not found on either album.
But basically you might as well get the first album to get most the songs found here and get Living in Fear to get all the ones missing from here.
I'm not sure who this is supposed to appeal to..........2004-12-26
First off, let me start by saying that I am a big fan of the original two Power Station albums (The Power Station and the sadly overlooked Living In Fear). Andy & John Taylor of Duran Duran put together a side project that really kicked some ass, and proved once and for all that they really could play. It's dance music, but the most rockin' dance music ever recorded. But, the band only recorded two albums, so a compilation is completely unneccesary, especially since the second album didn't feature any hits (despite the fact that in many ways it featured better songs). So, if you just wanted a collection of hits by this band, then pick up the first album. But this compilation throws in a couple of rare tracks, which would really only appeal to fans of the band. But if you already own the first two albums, then you are spending money really on three songs.
Regardless, if you are fan of Duran Duran or The Power Station, then just wait for the new deluxe edition of the first album. It will feature at least two of the rare tracks from this album (don't know if the live track will be included, but that wouldn't be much of a loss, since it features Michael Des Barres on vocals, because Robert Palmer refused to tour with the band), along with a bonus dvd. And if you're a casual fan of eighties music, you are much better off buying a compilation cd of eighties songs that feature Some Like It Hot or Bang A Gong...since those are the only two songs many people care about anyway.
This really only would appeal to someone who was told that The Power Station were great, and are curious. Other than that, don't waste your money.
Good material, but it just isn't enough.......2004-01-27
In 1985, the five members of Duran Duran temporarily separated into two side-project bands. One of these bands was the Power Station, which featured the legendary Robert Palmer on lead vocals. Although the band didn't score a good deal of hits, they were still an excellent band. In addition to their self-titled album in 1985, the band reunited in 1996 for a reunion album, Living In Fear. Recently, the band got a best of CD in the Ten Best Series. How does it measure up? Read on and find out.
PROS:
-If you're a casual fan and you're just seeking the band's biggest hit, Some Like It Hot, it's here for your listening pleasure.
-There are two excellent cover songs here as well - a cover of the Beatles classic Taxman, and T. Rex's Get It On (Bang A Gong.)
-A number of underrated masterpieces can be found here.
-It's budget-priced.
-Unlike other CDs in the Ten Best series, this one has rare and unreleased recordings.
CONS:
-WAY TOO MUCH emphasis on the first album, not enough on the second one.
-The band only had TWO albums, so a best of album for them is extremely unnecessary. If they wanted to make people by the rare tracks on a best of, why not just make a compilation of rarites and such?
-It doesn't fill the CD to the eighty minute limit.
OVERALL:
GET THE ALBUMS INSTEAD. This compilation might be enough for you if you're a very casual fan, but that's about it. Hits compilations are often scattershot, and this one is even worse since it's a BPC (budget-priced compilation.) I can't stress it enough - buy the albums!
The best of (but only from the 1st album) !.......2003-12-18
The Power Station was a side project for Duran Duran's John & Andy Taylor. Together with the late Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson, they formed this supergroup in 1985 and recorded an album which featured 2 US top 10 hits ("Some like it hot" + T-Rex's "Get it on").
Palmer left the Power Station shortly after to go on solo but in 1996, he re-formed the band for a second album "Living in fear" which failed to chart.
This low-budget collection concentrates on the 1st album. The only track from "Living in fear" included here is the cover of George Harrison's "Taxman".
3 tracks make the CD worth purchasing : a previously unreleased live version of "Dancing in the street" and dub versions of "Communication" and "Heat is on".

Bon Jovi pre-history.......2007-05-07
Before becoming a platinum-selling megastar, Jon Bon Jovi was just plain old John Bongiovi, a janitor at his uncle's recording studio The Power Station. While working at the studio (and before forming the band Bon Jovi), he recorded several songs that have been collected on this album.
There are at least half a dozen different versions of this material, released by as many different (but always small) record labels. I have to assume that the songs were never intended for release, otherwise Jon Bon Jovi himself would have issued the album, and you know that would have been a decent seller for a major label. The various releases contain anywhere from 10 to 20 songs. If you're going to track this album down, you might as well try for the one with the most songs.
As to the actual music collected here, it's not bad at all, though it falls well short of what we heard on the debut Bon Jovi album. These songs take a more straightforward pop approach than the (relatively) hard rocking Bon Jovi material. It's almost like Bon Jovi was doing his best Springsteen impression, which oddly enough is pretty close to Bon Jovi's current sound. It makes you wonder just how much of Bon Jovi's early (and massively successful) hard rock sound came from people like Richie Sambora, Aldo Nova, and Desmond Child.
The Power Station Years (or the Best of John Bongiovi, or whatever it may be called) is an interesting bit of Bon Jovi history, and one that all serious Bon Jovi fans should check out. You probably won't find yourself reaching for this disc very often, but it's always interesting to see an artist's humble beginnings, and even more so for a star of Jon Bon Jovi's status.

Customer Reviews:
Not the same band.......2006-05-26
This CD was shockingly bad. It doesn't have a single thing in common with the 1984-85 Power Station. None of the songs are catchy at all. If it wasn't for Robert Palmer's voice, I'd swear this was a different band. I have no clue what type of sound they were going for. There's no power pop, no kick *ss drumming, there's dumb lyrics, and boring guitar work. Terrible.
Great first track, but it tails off from there.......2005-05-16
Power Station was a great "woulda-coulda" band. In their energetic, coke-fueled heyday of 1986, the band could do no wrong. And yet, their debut was too short, and it always seemed odd that Robert Palmer returned to a solo career so shortly after their successful debut. Fast-forward to the mid-1990's, and Power Station re-united for a second go. Unfortunately, none of the players were at the top of their game. John Taylor worked on initial sessions but got caught up in rehab. Andy Taylor certainly lost some of his fire after the twin successes of the Power Station and his early solo singles. What happened? The late Robert Palmer clearly had some drug/alcohol issues and eventually died young. Tony Thompson was a marvelous drummer, but he never seemed to have the same energy or confidence after the automobile accident he suffered in England around the time of Live-Aid. Bernard Edwards subbed for John Taylor on these sessions, and he sounds good. However, he was also suffering from illness and would die shortly thereafter on tour with Chic in Japan. The first track, "Notoriety," has an amazing Edwards/Thompson groove that promises great things for the rest of the album. However, it never takes off from there, and the whole project leaves us to think about what could have been if only . . .
Solid Sophomore Effort.......2005-02-19
This second Power Station continues beautifully where the first one left off a decade earlier. Everyone seems to have different opinions on this one, but mine is that the album is even stronger than the first. The only thing you'll miss here are chart-topping singles, which mystifies me because there are several tracks that should have put the band back in the spotlight.
I don't understand what happened to John Taylor, since he's credited with co-writing all the tunes, but Bernard Edwards totally kicks on bass.
If you liked the debut album, I highly, highly recommend the second and final installment from PS.
ONE OF THE WORST albums EVER .......2005-02-10
It's hard to believe these are the same dudes that made the classic 1985 debut album one of the most memorable of the 80's.
"Living in fear" however, is poorly written, un-inspired, and uneven.
Bernard Edwards played bass on this one, and even THAT didn't save the album from being one of the worst ever made, by any artist.
Stay away from this one!
The melodies won't make a bit of sense to you.
...unfocused........2004-09-25
The second offering from the semi-supergroup known as The Power Station, Living In Fear, can best be summed up in one word: unfocused. In fact, upon hearing the opening guitar riff of Notoriety, one might actually be tempted to eject the c.d. and check the label to make sure they're playing the correct disc. Not that it's a bad song; just not a Power Station song, as is the case with Scared. Not until the third track does the quartet recapture the distinctive sound they engineered over a decade earlier. With the nasty groove of Bang A Gong and the piercing crunch of Murderess, She Can Rock It announces loud and clear that the switch has been flicked to the "on" position once again. Unfortunately, they immediately blow a fuse with an embarrassing remake of Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On. However, the disc powers up again with the synth-driven Life Forces, which is reminiscient of She's Still In Your Heart, and takes it up a notch with Living In Fear's strongest track, Fancy That, a slick r & b groove that would have been right at home on their 1985 debut with lines like: "You see that girl over there with Breck sunglasses on. She can't take her eyes off of you. She's up and down about seven times to the joan. She's about to turn around her baseball hat. Just fancy that." A handful of filler tracks later, they end on a high note with the funky Power Trippin'.
After several listens, it's still unclear what Palmer, Thompson and the two Taylors set out to accomplish here. Perhaps they were attempting to needlessly "update" their already timeless sound...or maybe they completely forgot what The Power Station sounded like in the first place. Maybe the four true Power Station songs on this collection were left over from the 1985 sessions. Regardless, Living In Fear is an e.p.'s worth of superb material and a fitting tribute to the late Palmer, Thompson and Bernard Edwards (who stepped in on bass after JT jumped ship). And I can fancy that.

If you prefer the guitar on vis a vis this album isnt for you. Bryson had left the band before this was recorded and his absence shows. Even so this has a few catchy tunes on it. Gotta feel your love, lightning and fooled again are very catchy. This CD has a dance feel to it but its not bad. I just wonder what might have happened if Bryson stayed.

First attempt by John Bongiovi.......2006-04-23
I owed a demo prior to him releasing this years later. I couldn't get the label I worked for to jump in and sign him based on lack of voice qualities and poor arrangements at that time in the 80's. The only workable song is "open your heart" he could have saved/rearranged it and stuck it into the band he quickly created after Runaway. This is a very raw attempt to break into the industry. It lacked then and even worse now. Good thing he created a band rather than solo, this album/CD solo is NOT worth the investment.
more than a bargain.......2001-11-06
for the bon jovi fan or just a fan of john's, this cd is a must. it captures all the essential ingredients of a bon jovi cd with the individuality of john's persona. you can tell the pure quality in the music. my favorites were MORE THAN WE BARGAINED FOR and DON'T LEAVE ME TONIGHT. these sum up the cd and justify john's talent pre-bon jovi. a good starter cd for bon jovi fans.
Years of rock and roll.......2001-03-31
John Bongiovi's album the Powerstation years lets us in on his music long before the band BONJOVI. The songs in a way are similar to the usuall bonjovi music but these songs also have there scent of individuality of Johns music. My favourite songs on the album include Dont leave me tonight,Hollywood dreams and in johns case these dreams came true with his success in the movie industry. I also liked More than we bargined for and talking in your sleep. This is a must album for those who are fans of Bonjovi or just John.
