"Love And Destroy" could have been better.......2006-03-13

There is nothing I could say that is BAD about this CD. It's just I thought a thing or two could have been better. Here's what I have to say:

MICHAEL--This fast paced rock song is of very good quality. It's just that many would be given some wrong impressions about Alex Kapranos from listening to the lyrics of the song. But I'm not going to start describing why. The bottom line is that it's a good song. Featuring vocals by Alex Kapranos and Nick McCarthy.

LOVE AND DESTROY--I once heard a live version of this song, and it was EXCELLENT. I just wanted to listen to it over and over again. So, I expected the actual album version to be even better. But I was wrong. The album version isn't a bad song, it's just so slow and unamimated compared to the version that I once knew. Featuring vocals by Alex Kapranos and Nick McCarthy.

MISSING YOU--One song by Franz Ferdinand that does not feature piano that can be called a ballad. And it is quite beautiful. I'm glad that Franz Ferdinand discovered how to write a ballad and include electric guitar in it. Featuring vocals by Alex Kapranos.

So my final say is 4.5/5, .5 stars of just because I expected LOVE AND DESTROY to be so much better.

There are no throw aways.......2005-01-18

Most people who might be interested in this single probably have the Franz Ferdinand album. But this single is a must for "Love and Destroy" and "Missing". It's a shame "Love and Destroy" did not make the album because this is the first Franz Ferdinand song I heard and got me hooked on them. It has a distinct 80's sound and great guitar riff that reminds me of early "New Order". This is probably my favorite song by them. "Missing You" is another strong track that could have easily made the album also. Don't be fooled that these are B-sides, with Franz Ferdinand it seems there are no throw away tracks.

While You Have Been Loved is a lovely track, I really bought this single for the two mixes of The Strangest Thing that are included on this disc. That song is hypnotic. I love it. I admire George Michael's work very much.

This single is taken from George Michael's 1996 album "Older" but with different arrangement. Even if I have owned the "Older" album, I still like to buy this single. Because it's a George Michael song. If you like his music, you will not want to miss it. Besides its beautiful melody, I like the lyrics of this song. Listening to it at night when you're lying in bed alone, George's angle-like voice can bring you ease in mind. I love this feeling!

I love a good remix where the dj or producer has listened to the song, then listened again. Then listened 1 more time. Then one can get the feel of the song as it exists and see alternatives branch out before you. Much like a trip to a new place, you use the path you're shown then you try different routes to get there. You get different scenery, you understand the outlying geography better, details jump out, background becomes foreground, perspective enriches the view. This isn't what I have here. I have a bus ride and not the kind where the driver calls out points of interest. These kind of remixes give me the impression that some people have a backstock of beats that vocals are simply laid atop and call it a day. The beats themselves aren't bad, they just don't add to the original or offer an alternate view. It's like having your picture taken at Sears and they have the windowshade pull-down background. It's just there as filler, having nothing to do with the subject.

I don't want it to seem that this particular disc is the only one guilty of this crime,Homogenity as an art form, but hearing the original and this being the work of George Michael (an artist truly worthy of the term) I expect, hell even hope, that a remixer would bring hir "A" game.

There is another recording of "Goodbye" by N.Melba on Victor 95012,released in the US in 1905.I wonder why it is not included in this "complete" Romophone release?

Just how much Nellie Melba can one take at one sitting? Judging by this set an awful lot and that is no mean achievement given the unflattering recording, and Melba's maddening habit of recording an aria again and again. Melba's singing lacks charm - judging from contemporary reports the lady could boast little of this anyway. But it has an astonishing technique, a limpid and glorious tone, and at times some indefinable but terribly moving quality. A great, great singer - in fact for my money marginally the best on record.

In a class by herself.......1999-11-23

Melba achieves perfection more often than any other singer (with the exception of Pol Plancon). Her phrases, her high notes, her ritardandi are beyond conventional emotion and beauty. There is something almost otherworldly in her best moments. In the grand Puccini arias, she seems at first too cool, too controlled. But you soon notice her supreme artistry as well as the fire, the sheer physical force just beneath the utterly smooth surface. In fact, she is sometimes more explosive, more dramatic, than the great Callas herself. And she gives so much of herself! In the Boheme arias, her generosity is perhaps most apparent. In marveling at one perfect top note after another, one almost does not realize how cohesive she can make the pieces seem, how architectural and intelligent her approach is.

Only One Melba.......1999-02-12

That was certainly Dame Nellie's assessment of herself, and she must have been something. Yes, both Peach Melba and Melba toast are named after her, and yes, she was worshipped. Even such a curmudgeon as Bernard Shaw could appreciate her greatness. Puccini praised the fact that she sang HIS music, not "Melba-Puccini." So why, then, do her recordings not reveal to us the scope of her artistry? Granted, we can marvel at the technical accomplishments (listen, for example, to the "Hamlet" mad scene, or "Sweet Bird") and occasionally catch a phrase that makes us understand what she was about, but she lacks the grandeur and opulence of Ponselle, or the tender vulnerability of Galli-Curci. It may be that Melba was, after all, an artist of the theatre, and that the cramped, primitive conditions of early recording studios simply did not inspire her to her greatest work. However, for devotees of Golden Age voices, this Romophone set is indispensible. The transfers are masterfully done, so that even those allergic to the acoustic sound of early recordings will not be bothered.
