Fleet-fingered fretman Monte Montgomery has quietly carved out a name for himself on the competitive Austin music scene as a poll-winning guitar hero and a must-see live act. What's more, on a scene known for blazing Stevie Ray-style Stratocasters, he's done it all with an acoustic guitar! Montgomery's first live effort, a double disc recorded at Fort Worth's palatial performing-arts venue Caravan of Dreams, showcases his guitar prowess and the popular appeal of his live band's propulsive power. Most of the acoustic rock-oriented material comes from Montgomery, as self-penned staples from his live show are interspersed with such favorites as "Wishing Well," "Whirlwind," and "When Will I" from his two studio albums. Montgomery and the band make the most of the live setting, stretching out the songs--five go past 10 minutes--with creative instrumental interplay. Montgomery also successfully mixes in a diverse selection of cover tunes, including a percussion-driven rendition of Fleetwood Mac's "World Turning" and a radically reworked, almost satiric take on Merle Haggard's "Silver Wings." The Hall & Oates hit "Sara Smile" and Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet," the latter the 13-minute album closer, also appear in personalized versions spotlighting Montgomery's aggressive acoustic-guitar excellence and his crowd-pleasing personality as a live entertainer. --Michael Point

3 out of 5 stars Monte Montgomery Live at the Caravan of Dreams.......2005-05-18

I have had the privlidge of seeing him live in San Antonio a few times and he is great. However this live CD could be better. I would highly recomend the "Let Me In" CD by Ruben V. Or any other CD by Ruben V. He is the best Guitarist in Texas today.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-05-11

Start to finish this album is amazing. When one disc finishes, I put the other one in. A must have album.

4 out of 5 stars Virtuosity is a little boring .......2004-12-31

I don't doubt that Monte Montgomery is the best guitar player in the whole state of Texas, and I don't doubt that he's something to see in person, but all in all I found this live CD a bit repetitive and lacking in variety. Too many of the songs sound the same: virtuoso guitar licks and heavy drums.

I listened closely to "Romeo and Juliet" which is one of my favorite songs. Yes, Monte picks out the melody beautifully now and then, but most of this 13 minute song is played like an exercise in complex chords and scales. Montgomery sings pretty well, and his back up players are good, but there aren't any songs on this two-CD concert that stay in the mind. Monte Montgomery merits 4 stars for being a helluva guitar player.

4 out of 5 stars Okay recording of one of the best live performers.......2004-01-22

The recording and production of this cd fails to capture the complexity of Monte and his band. Three guys sound like 6, as carefully woven rhythms grab ahold of you until Monte shakes you up with his guitar work... when you see them live, or listent to a studio album. For some reason, the bass seems to get lost on this recording, and the guitar solos fail to cut through. Still a good cd, but could have been one of the 10 best in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars I can't stop listening to this one........2004-01-13

I've seen Monte live several times, and have all his other albums, and this performance is as great as the sound quality. I really don't know what other folks are talking about, criticizing the mix or the performance.

And I'm sorry there is a dispute regarding the legality of this recording, but I don't get the logic that we should deprive ourselves of this great artist and his music! I just wish he would release more live material...

2 out of 5 stars Lacking........2005-09-22

In 1986, no doubt Ronald Shannon Jackson had a challenge on his hand-- the Decoding Society had pretty much scattered, and with the loss of such powerful musicians, assembling a new band to succeed them was a difficult task. The second generation Decoding Society, guitarist Cary DeNegris, bassist Reginald Washington, violinist Akbar Ali and saxaphonist Eric Person on this recording persons in conjunction with African singers/percussionists Twins Seven Seven. The result of the collaboration, while interesting, lacks much of the fire that the older Decoding Society had.

By and large the pieces are invested in funky African rhythms, they have a nice sound, the playing is good all around (particularly Washington, who adds a good slap funk sensibility and slithers nicely between Jackson's rhythms), but there's by and large something really quite unfulfilling about the record. It just doesn't burn. The band did much better work, this is a curiosity piece more than having any intrinsic value.
