A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

5 out of 5 stars pedro the lion. yes. pedro........2007-03-08

pedro the lion has been one of my favorite bands for a long time. out of all the pedro albums i've heard, this one is my favorite. its perfect. its a perfect mix of slow folky songs to more dancable indierock.

now sometimes i read reviews about pedro being 'emo'. i don't consider pedro the lion emo at all. emo is whine. when david bazan sings, its like listening to a sad man. not to say he is one, its just his writing style.

back to the album. i can honestly say that the cd is one great highlight. songs like "big trucks" and "When they really.." are just amazing. great, upbeat writing. i love them. the slower songs are amazing, also. "bad diary days" and "the secret of.." are just amazing and "promise" is about the best ender to a cd ever.

its a good cd. i've never written a review. i hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Just awesome........2006-02-26

If you want a smooth sound that takes ya away. And I know people talk about this being a christian CD ( Im agnostic ), but it's not imposing. It is good. listen to it and you'll know. Go to allofmp3.com to HEAR LONGER CLIPS than amazon gives you.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-01-26

The first album by the only Christian band that I listen to. One thing that i love about this band that even though i usually dislike Christian music, i am not embarrassed to listen to. The way that David Bazan tells stories makes the listener feel like they are there with the character. But one must take into account that this music is very downbeat and slow at times, but is also surprisingly beautiful. This music is mostly simplistic with an emphasis on the acoustic guitar, but incredibly powerful. So buy this album, or really anything by this band, because you wont be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars songs about finding one's personal path.......2005-05-22

"The Secret of the Easy Yoke," moved me to tears and I am not a Christian. The honesty, the questioning, the doubt and the belief make this song one of this important band's most powerful statements. Musically simple, but like a great Beethoven melody, has the power to move mountains.

Pedro the Lion established themselves in the indie-emo scene with their debut EP, Whole, and its fluid melodies and dynamic changes. But if the band's full-length debut is any indication, band leader David Bazan's heart lies closer to the singer/songwriter ethos. It's Hard to Find a Friend is at once confessional, intimate, and honest, with clean melodies and simple arrangements (bare bones guitar, bass, and drums; few overdubs or accouterments). These songs belie an underground awareness perfectly fused with pop sensibilities. Bazan's understated baritone voice and simple guitar technique deliver heartbreaking ditties that resonate on an emotional level. And his sad love songs take on an Old Testament quality as they play out the story behind them. --Brad Caviness

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Control is better.......2002-04-22

I just wanted to say that Pedro as a whole is incredible. David Bazan really knows his music. His lyrics are incredible and heart wrenching and They have got to be one of my favorite bands. This album is great but his new album which came out April 16, CONTROL .... Is one of the most amazing albums I have ever layed ears on. It is incredible. Every song is terrific, no lie... It's sad as usual, It's poppy without being pop and it's surpassed my standards for a good cd.My favorite songs are Options, Second Best, Magazine, and Priests and Paramedics.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent lyrics.......2001-10-21

The first time you hear this, you may hate it, but keep trying. Pedro is not the most accessible band out there. In fact, I'd say that out of all the songs on here, the only ones that musically jumped out at me at first were "Promise", "Big Trucks", and "When They Really...". However, after about four listens, you'll remember all of these amazingly simple and amazingly catchy songs, and find yourself singing right along. And really, this isn't even about the music as much as the lyrics, which are beautiful. They're straightforward stories that offer hope and give a glimpse of God's love to our hurting world, yet they also have an authenticity that other artists usually don't convey, particularly other Christian artists. I highly reccomend tyring this album out, you'll fall in love.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical innovation for the mellow music lover.......2001-07-20

A mellow outing on the modern musical forefront, this band stops the madness by saying "innovation doesn't just come from technical complexity." Sure there are a lot of people, my younger brother included, that can play this bands stuff, but you must remember... it is the creation that is amazing, not the glamour. The art on display here expresses emotional melancholy, but still recognizing ones outer surroundings as important. An album without full introspection leaves me with a great feeling at the end. I think most people will get into this music, especially if you like a mellower tone. This might be a great crossover band for those of you who struggle to find electric mellow that you enjoy. Try this to get away from just acoustic rock. Probably a good starter album for this band as well.

5 out of 5 stars Crushingly beautiful every time.......2001-07-19

David Bazan (and his "band") performs live in Chicago sometimes, and while his fans are often crazed, Bazan is anything but. "Does anybody... have any questions?" he'll mumble into his microphone, squinting into the dark.

And Bazan's music is no different. Always shy, low-key, often dismal, and sometimes wildly humorous, his simple melodies and spoken-word style lyrics never fail to leave listeners startled at their own rush of sympathy. It's Hard to Find a Friend chronicles Bazan's struggle to keep from backsliding into a past full of addictions when his own world -- and his most beloved -- seemed to be falling apart.

Harder than finding a friend, of course, is finding real *sincerity* and worth in today's indie rock scene, what with tongues perpetually in cheek and emotions permanently in check. Even so-called "emo" bands have contrived, phony words, and manufactured emotions sulk behind every riff.

David Bazan is a true contrast to those falsehoods. His music is straight-up folk, somehow belying a certain torment resting in its punk rock roots. And Bazan himself is a real blessing: while he IS world-wise, he is by no means world-WORN. Pedro the Lion's frontman leaves cynicism on the stoop; his songs are a testament to faith that the broken human spirit can heal, endure, and prevail.

4 out of 5 stars This is what rock needs today.......2001-06-19

"It's Hard to Find a Friend" is quite an album. David Bazan writes clever, emotional lyrics that truly show he's put thought and energy into his work. The music itself is solid; the instruments are played well, and the sound has a simplistic feel that serves the as a structure for melody, adding even more emotion to the song. Frankly I think the music was done nearly perfectly; Pedro the Lion is not much more than a guitar and drum, and the album is a result of that. It shows that you don't have to have a glamourous image to make music; it shows that you don't have to be eccentric to have emotions. Pedro the Lion is what rock and roll is all about in my opinion. Its not about the money, or the fame, or the fans, or the critics, or anything like that. It's about the connection between the musician and the music, and the feelings that are drawn out from the former by the latter. David Bazan is one of the few musicians I have heard that really demonstrates that he has this connection.
