5 out of 5 stars Double your pleasure.......2005-08-23

Back in the heyday of smooth jazz, this particular album brought it ALL together - pianist Bob James of "Taxi" fame and saxophonist David Sanborn, fresh off his "Change of Heart" triumph. Add singer Al Jarreau on the all-time classic, "Since I Fell For You," and this was all you heard in the mid-1980s. Think "Moonlighting" and David's appearances on Letterman's Late Night.
"Maputo" is still a staple in Sanborn's arsenal today when he performs in concert. It still draws a strong audience reaction.
"Double Vision" belongs in the Smooth Jazz Hall of Fame.

5 out of 5 stars It was my begining to Jazz .......2004-11-02

This CD actually won the very first Soul Train award for best Jazz album and they actually performed It's You on stage with George Benson,George Duke, Paul Jackson Jr. Pinlino Decosta and I was hooked on the album ever since it is and will always be in my top five in my 350 collection of jazz cd's Sandborn has a style like know other when you here im blow you know it is him I have everything he has ever made in cassette and CD(I am kinda old) but I will tell anyone this is the first CD you should get and it will lead to much more

1 out of 5 stars cheese.......2004-05-03

this recording is dripping with all kinds of cheese.
gut wrenchingly smooth saxophone, bossa nova beats, sickly vocals.
i am a fan of some of the musicians on this album, (sanborn played with miles at one time, and gadd has played on some great stuff we all know - steeley dan, chick corea etc) but together they produce some absolute schmaltz.
great as a 'California beach' set soft porn soundtrack, but lacking any edge or memorable hooks to hum along to.
what, you dont mind not having memorable hooks as long as there is dynamic musicianship and music for music's sake?
not the album for you either.
granted, maybe my criticism is due to the fact the album is 14 years old, but it still sounds very dated.

5 out of 5 stars Wine drinking Cigar Smoking Mood Music.......2003-10-29

I can't say enough about this CD - as soon as the first strains of Maputo ooze out, I am transported to another world, as I sit outside watching the stars with my guy, a nice glass of wine and a good cigar. When I hear this CD - all I can think of is - Life is Good! Seriously, this CD is a must-have for the contemporary jazz enthusiast. Do yourself a favor and add it to you collection if you haven't already.

5 out of 5 stars The single greatest CD ever made.......2003-10-15

I was just listening to this CD on the way to work for the umpteenth million time and thought I would take a look and see the other reviews for this CD. Granted this CD has been around since '86, this has been one of my most coveted and cherished of all my personal possessions here on planet Earth. To see that there are so few reviews for this CD strikes me odd. Though I'm glad to see that it scores out as a "5". I still don't think "5" does it any justice--it should something like "infinity". Does the lack of reviews mean that there are so many ill-informed people or just that everyone already knows what a terrific CD this is. Whatever the case may be let me just tell you that I would give my right AND left arm to just hear the songs that only made it to the studio floor. If these 7 were the only ones that made it to the CD, what other treasures might exist. Again, this is my most coveted of all jazz CD's. The musicianship is unbelievable, unreal and out of this world. If you haven't heard this CD before then perhaps you haven't really lived!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A bit middle of the road.......2007-03-14

As with a lot of Foreigners works, they tend to overlook their strong-points and focus too much on "intellignet pop". This is definitely one of those albums.

it begins with a blistering rocker "Hot Blooded" which is one of their most popular tracks to this day. Although it's very Lennonesque, the spacey "I have waited to long", sung by Mick Jones, is another highlight, a really beautiful song. The closing track, "Spellbinder" is a bit of a token-rocker but at least it rocks. The instrumental "Tramontane" is interesting.

Between that, there are a lot of maudlin love-ballads about being such a lovely-romantic man whose mistreated by a nasty girl. It's an overdone theme in rock. I mean "Love has taken it's toll" and "Blue Morning" have some grit but"back where you belong" is realy maudlin and melancholy. The ballad "You're all I am" is pretty typical and overly-sugary.

With this album they seemed to reach for a more Beatlesque sound rather than a hard-rock - prog fusion. It doesn't have the grit of their better albums. Still, there are a few good tracks, I'd rate it at about 4 / 10, maybe slightly more.

5 out of 5 stars Foreigner Avoids The Sophmore Jinx.......2006-11-26

With DOUBLE VISION, Foreigner avoids the sophmore jinx, by adding the influences of such pro-law-enforcement guitar bands as Ted Nugent and the Outlaws, resulting in a heavier album than the debut. A couple of the ballads drag a bit, but the album as a whole is totally consistent, to the point where, in my view, discussion of specific highlights is not protected by the Constitution. Of the two bonus cuts, the live version of "Hot Blooded" is totally smokin', but the version of the soul standard "Love Maker" adds nothing. Any band whose two leading lights (Lou Gramm and Mick Jones) advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as increased funding for law enforcement, deserves nothing but the best that their reissue label (in this case Rhino) can give them.

1 out of 5 stars Lame.......2006-07-26

This should ONLY be used as a reminder of how bad the 70's worst excesses were. Avoid. BTW, 'Hot Blooded' blows chunks.

5 out of 5 stars Great sophomore effort by Foreigner.......2006-06-20

This second album by Foreigner is probably their best effort and a bit better than the self titled debut. I remember playing this on my high powered car cassette deck back in the very early 80's. It sounded so awesome in my Ford Grand Torino, cruising the streets of Wichita when I was in high school. This is their only release that doesn't seem to have any filler on it whatsoever. The ones I like the most are the songs like "Back Where You Belong", "I Have Waited So Long", "You're All I Am", "Love Has Taken It's Toll", and "Lonely Children". I can't believe that DOUBLE VISION only has four reviews here on Amazon when other great albums have close to a hundred or more. "Come up with some reviews Foreigner fans"!!! If you've been thinking of buying some discs by this supergroup, Double Vision is the perfect cd to start out with. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great sophomore album.......2005-09-03

This was Foreigner's second album and there was no let down from the first. This is another collection of well-written rock songs. Melodies you can sing along to, guitar riffs you can play air guitar with and Lou Gramm's amazing voice. "Hot Blooded" and "Double Vision" were the big hits but there honestly isn't a bad song on the CD. Even the instrumental, "Tramontane" is an excellent song, eery and haunting. They also did a nice job with their ballads, slowed them down, but still made them a rock n' roll song. A great CD.

5 out of 5 stars Neglected Classics Remembered.......2003-11-12

I've been reading about Hoagy Carmichael and listening to his songs and music. My research brought me here.

These selections are generally meditative in character, though John Alden Carpenter's "Sea Drift" does contain a bit of flash. Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings", the only workhorse here, receives a loving performance. Thomas Canning's warmth filled "Fantasy on a Hymn Tune of Justin Morgan" is somewhat reminescent of Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis" and is a gem.

Closing out this program is another gem -- Hoagy Carmichael's suprizingly delightful selection from his "Johnny Appleseed Suite" -- warm, lyrical, rich, hopeful. Why the entire work has not been recorded, here or elsewhere, is a mystery. This six minute selection makes me want to hear the entire twenty minute work. The full score does exist at Indiana University's Hoagy Carmichael Collection.

The performances and sound quality of this recording are top notch. This is the only Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra recording I own and I must say they are fabulous! The ISO and Leppard are to be applauded for recording these neglected American classics. This is a most welcome compilation!

5 out of 5 stars Very Enthusiastic.......1999-12-21

This is a very lovely collection of underplayed and under appreciated American works. I concure with the other reviewers. Leppard leads the Indianapolis Symphony in some sumptuous playing of these tender but emotionally charged works. Especially the Fantasy on a Hymn Tune which is deftly performed. If your are looking for an alternative to Ives and Schuman, this is a great disk to expand your horizons.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Performances from this smaller American Orchestra.......1999-10-24

This recent release from Decca Records has some of the familiar but also relatively unknown American works. The recorded sound is quite lovely, a very warm string sound, and some charming solo playing, especially coming from the English Horn player in the work by Hoagy Carmichael. In a era when most recordings and artistic attention is awarded to the largest American orchestras, having a chance to hear what some of the smaller and lesser known ensembles in the USA can do is quite amazing and well worth having available. Many of these works have never been recorded before, and they as a collection represent a slice of America that many people having been yearning for and have been missing. HATS OFF TO THE INDIANAPOLIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FOR THIS PROJECT!

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite.......1999-08-15

American Dreams is a perfect title to this wonderful CD from the Indianapolis Symphony. With the exception of the Barber Adagio for Strings, the CD presents American Romantic masterworks that are rarely played and recorded. Leppard and his orchestra play the sweet melodies with the sincerety characterized by the state with which they are from, America's heartland state of Indiana. The most famous of the pieces recorded, the Barber, is given a new interpretation that does not allow the music's intensity to overwhelm. The most wonderful piece on the CD is Gershwin's Lullaby for strings - called Gershwin's first classical piece - is absolutly breathtaking. If this program were played at their summer venue at Conner Prairy, it would make for one incredible evening of music; therefore, if you are looking for music under the stars of an Indiana Summer from your home, this is the CD to buy.

Album Description

A beautifully made yet abstruse film, The Double Life of Veronique is the story of two young women who are in some mysterious and irresolvable way the same woman leading two different yet interconnected lives. Directed by the great Krzysztof Kieslowski, known for his Blue, White & Red films. The score by Zbigniew Preisner compliments the oblique images. 1991.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Achingly beautiful.......2006-06-15

First, I am a bit surprised no one has reviews this magnificant album yet.

The music that flows from this album is of the Gods. You don't have to see the film. Just play this and you will melt. The Concerto in track 5 still brings tears to my eyes even after many listens. It is also a key point in the film.

Zbigniew Preisner is a romantic at heart and no doubt one of the giants of film composition in our time. You don't want to miss his compositions to the Three Colors trilogy as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent album.......2004-05-02

Double Vision (1978.) Foreigner's second album.

Foreigner's debut album proved a solid point - Rock and roll was far from dead. Disco wasn't gonna rule the pop charts for much longer; rock was making a comeback. Put simply, Mick Jones and Lou Gramm never fail to please. In 1978, a plethora of rock albums were released. Boston's Don't Look Back. Rainbow's Long Live Rock And Roll. Black Sabbath's Never Say Die!. And, of course, Foreigner's Double Vision, which would go on to become the best-selling album of the year. Was this album an overrated one that actually wasn't too good, or was it a masterpiece of an album that people must hear to appreciate? Read on for my review.

Hot Blooded, One of Foreigner's biggest hits, kicks off the album. This is classic arena rock at its finest. And it's no surprise the song became so popular. Blue Morning, Blue Day is another one of the band's masterpieces. Think the piano has no place in rock and roll? Then you've never heard this song. You're All I Am is a slow track, and this one also uses the piano. It's an excellent love song. Back Where You Belong is an excellent ballad in which both Jones and Gramm do vocals. Love Has Taken Its Toll is a rocker with a very distinctive seventies sound to it. You guessed it, it's about love. This underrated mastepiece must be heard to be appreciated. Double Vision, the title track, show's great strength with its inventive lyrics. Who can forget classic lines like "My mind is racing but my body's in the lead?" Tramontane gives us Foreigner doing an instrumental? Yep. And they do an excellent job of it too. I Have Waited So Long is a slow and melodic track with Jones doing the vocals. When he does the vocals, the results are surprisingly good. Lonely Children is another excellent rocker with that seventies sound to it. It's keyboard heavy, but that manages to be a good thing, believe it or not. Spellbinder is a hard track to rate because it has such a unique sound to it. It's all good, though. All in all, this album is excellent.

The classic four Foreigner albums have been reissued with bonus tracks, but unlike the ones on the band's self-titled debut and the one on the Head Games album, these ones are nothing special. The live version of Double Vision was previously released on Records (the band's first hits compilation) as a bonus track, and it's inferior to its studio counterpart. The second bonus track doesn't even belong here because it was recorded nearly fifteen years after the rest of the album! Oh, and it's also previously released.

Double Vision is an EXCELLENT rock album, and it sure as hell doesn't suffer from the dreaded sophomore jinx. Give it a listen, and you'll see why Mick Jones and Lou Gramm are musical geniuses - and why it was 1978's best selling rock album. This is essential to any classic rock CD collection!

5 out of 5 stars Double Decker Foreigner With A Side Of Rock!!!.......2003-06-20

Here we have a second helping of flavorful Foreigner classic rock that in my opinion is just as amazing as their debut. With 1978's "Double Vision" Foreigner put together a strong sophmore masterpiece. This album is one of my favorites from the group. the album gets rockin' hard right away with their huge hit "Hot Blooded;" a rugged, edgy piece of perfection. The catchy groove of "Blue Morning, Blue Day" is very addictive. Though it paled in comparison to Foreigner's big hits, it is a song that should not be overlooked. Two of my favorite songs from this amazing album are my most favorite; the beautiful, soulful, harmonious ballad, "You're All I Am," and the danceable, groovy, rock punching "Back Where You Belong, which features a great vocal performance by Mick Jones. The title song, "Double Vision" is a complete classic; more of a pop-classic rock piece with melodic keyboards. I still remember the "Burger King" commercial where the food chain used "Double Vision" to help promote a special they were having. It was really neat. One of the more interesting songs on this album is "Tramotane," an instrumental with much keyboard emphasis. It kind of gives you a laid-back, spacey kind of feeling. Foreigner slows the pace down a bit on "I Have Waited So Long," a more melancholy, fee-flowing song, which features Mick again in the vocal spotlight. The rowdy rock of "Lonely Children" fits perfectly into this blend of songs, and features some great intense harmonies by the gang. The album is finished off with "Spellbinder," a song done in kind of a less-aggressive fashion, but with intensity just the same. For the second straight album, Lou, Mick, and the gang bring forth some superb musicianship! The vocals, guitars, keyboards, bass, and drums are just as flawless as here as on the debut! This is one of Foreigner's best! Buy it now!!!

5 out of 5 stars utterly fantastic !!!!.......2003-03-03

As a very big foreinger fan , I would probbibly be SHOT
for saying this , but I would go out on a limb and say this is
a better cd than there debut.

4 out of 5 stars Feel My Eyes, You've got Double Vision.......2003-02-15

Foreigner's second album Double Vision is another one of Foreigner's classic rock staple albums such as the title track, Hot Blooded and Blue Morning, Blue Day.

    Hot Blooded
The album's first hit single and one of the classic rock radio staples is one of the best guitar driven tunes of all time.
    5/5

    Blue Morning, Blue Day
Another hit from this album despite the fact that it didn't get to be on Records or The Very Best and Beyond.
    4/5

    You'll All I Am
One of Foreigner's early ballads and it's in the same vein as That Was Yesterday or Say You Will, an underrated ballad.
    5/5

    Back Where You Belong
Mick Jones takes over the vocals on this song and it is perhaps the album's worst track on this album, AVOID THIS ONE PLEASE!
    2/5

    Love Has Taken Its Toll
Of all my favorite songs off this album, this is my very favorite one, Lou Gramm does a good job with the fact that it's about getting s##t on by women. 5/5

    Double Vision
Another Foreigner masterpiece, and still to this day it gets radio airplay, especially on classic rock stations. 5/5

    Tromantane
An instrumental tune by Foreigner, not bad but pretty forgettable. 3/5

    I Have Waited So Long
Another song with Mick Jones on vocals but it's alot better than Back Where You Belong and it could've been easily penned by John Lennon. 4/5

    Lonely Children
A rather forgettable song and the lyrics were a little cheesy, but it goes to show you that people deserved more than what they get. 3/5

    Spellbinder

This song could've easily been penned by Procol Harum or King Crimson, but it's another good song. 4/5

5 out of 5 stars More great classic Foreigner.......2002-10-12

This second album by Foreigner was another winner in the vein of the debut classic. Back during this time, the late 1970's, pop radio would actually allow rockers from bands like this to be huge chart hits...and this album had two of them. "Hot Blooded", the huge rocker to lead off the album, and the also-rocking title track, which began "side two" of the old cassette and LP versions of this classic album, were both top 5 hits that are also still classic rock staples. However, other tracks on this album also shine.

Take the more minor hit "Blue Morning, Blue Day". This song is more of an anthemic rocker than the two big hits, which are more straight ahead. Clearly the message about a good love gone bad is typical of this type of music, but it is well-stated and melodically sung here. "You're All I Am" is an example of a slow Foreigner track before the true power ballad days of the band that brought them a couple of huge hits. Strong bass, soulful singing, and tuneful but mellow guitars with just a hit of keyboards. "I Have Waited So Long" is also along this vein, although Lou Gramm doesn't sing lead on this one (I think Mick Jones does). This song is actually a bit Beattleseque, something the "corporate rock" haters who lump this type of artist into one disparaging category would never agree with or acknowledge.

"Tramontane" is the only existing Foreigner instrumental. It is moderate tempo, somewhat progressive, and keyboard heavy. Very good track. Even better is the rocker "Love Has Taken Its Toll", where Lou lamments about the difficulties of getting with a woman he finds attractive. (He even gets slapped across the face in this song.) "Lonely Children" is another amazing rocking anthem with tuneful, soulful vocals.

Don't miss this album if you are a Foreigner fan. More than the big hits shine on this stellar collection. If you enjoy the classic melodic rock of the late '70s/early '80s timeframe, then this album is definitely for you. Strongly recommended, as are virtually all Foreigner albums.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond all description..........2006-09-19

As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09

...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!.......2002-11-07

This Pavarotti set; The Pavarotti Edition; is a wonderful collection of Arias and songs that cover Luciano's great career. Pavarotti is THE Voice of the 20th Century and this set does him justice. It includes 10 CDs with over 750 minutes of music; Includes Music from All of His roles; has a beautiful 76 page full color booklet; Has a wonderful write up; and includes a bonus CD of Pavarotti's fist album, a 45, from 1964, which has never been released on CD before this set. Every Song is hear, This SET is a must have for every Pavarotti Fan.

1 out of 5 stars Miracle Live by 12 Girls Band VCD.......2006-02-01

Although called a CD by Amazon and sold as such, this will not play on any average American CD player, DVD player or Computer Disc Drive. We love the music of 12 Girls Band but had to return the item at a loss because we were unable to make it play on anything we have. Supposedly VCD is popular in Asia but has never made an inroad in America. Order only if you know it can be played on your equipment.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2006-01-12

I have the Hong Kong DVD version of this Miracle Live concert, and I must say the music is just beautiful and rich. I have not bought new CDs and/or DVDs of music for a long time, except for the 12 Girls Band. I hope they will continue to produce beautiful music for us. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A sonic, cultural and visual extravaganza.......2005-12-15

This review is for the DVD version but the material review is valid for the VCD as well.

Initially I saw "The 12 Girls Band" on an HDTV program in a Chinese Restaurant. It was not the same program that is in the "Miracle" DVD, the HDTV special was perhaps better still. The memory of that program kept coming back to me, and the more I thought about it, the more I needed to see "The Girls" again. It is indeed fortunate that Amazon and partners had access to this DVD which does not appear to be published in the USA (I am willing to bet that after the recent East Coast concert series that situation will be corrected shortly, they were all sold out).

The Girls play traditional Chinese and Jazz fusion melodies on a scale that evokes a Grand Philharmonic spectacle. I enjoyed the traditional material and the occasional venture into remake of the classics like in track 12, the New Classicism (Beethoven et al) more than the Western style "Take Five". Do not get me wrong, they are all spectacular both sonically and visually, the traditional material is just more "right".

This concept of "right" is very interesting, all of the girls are stunningly beautiful, and they play the music with precision, maybe too much precision. There are hardly any un-necessary gestures or even smiles. When the enjoyment of doing something well comes across, it is in their eyes. Before the program is over, each of the girls will have her unique personality imprinted on your mind. Therefore, the "traditional" music seems to be more "right" with the "restrained" presentation style. On one track though, #19, "Happy Valley", two of the girls do what can best be described as an oriental drum percussion hip-hop number, by playing an overturned metal desk. Here they hand clap, play the bongos, dance, interact with the audience and look quite extroverted, something for everyone?

So the music is superb, the artistry is inescapable, and the presentation is? Pretty good actually, the stage is mostly flat with terraces for groups of performers, the uppermost and rearmost one reserved for the backing band. Yes, there are some electronic keyboards, guitars, and a very capable drummer backing the main band. The stage lighting is mostly monochromatic blue or red, with mostly sound synchronized motion. At times there are background visuals like butterflies or fish (the live fish I believe are projected on a muslin see thru screen stretched in front of the stage). Live fish being what they are did not swim synchronized with the music and so some of the harmony of sounds and visuals was lessened somewhat.

There are bound to be comparisons with "Bond live at Royal Albert Hall". Both are semi classical music, both are "girl" groups, but the presentation could not have been more different. One is classical Eastern, one classical Western. One is over-produced, while the other is under-produced (makes you feel like as if you are at the forefront of a cultural discovery though). In case you want to try an interesting experiment, consider that both Bond and 12 Girls cover the same song number "Victory" on their respective DVDs, Girls on track 11, while Bond does it on their track 12 and their Grand Finale. BOTH are fun, just different. Enjoy them both. I keep wondering what a mixture of "Renaissance", "Rick Wakeman", "Yes" and "Emerson Lake and Palmer" may have looked like when updated and performed by 12 Girls. This was pure unadulterated fun.

And finally, some technical notes. I have seen both the Japanese and the Hong Kong version of the "Miracle" DVD. The Hong Kong version is by far the better of the two. It has a 2 track digital stream, a 5.1 Dolby Digital track and a 5.1/6.1 DTS sound track. I have never heard DTS sound so pronouncedly better than Dolby Digital. The 2-track DVD audio only, on the Japanese DVD has a lot of audience noise and talking in the right channel. The Hong Kong (Universal) disk also contains the Bonus track "Freedom" music video. The music video is poor quality video transfer though. The wide screen main program video quality is better, but still not top notch. For now, I am willing to overlook this, as the subject matter is THAT good.

5 out of 5 stars miracle live VCD.......2004-11-12

I have to admit i had never heard of this band until recently, and i was astonished, this band of instrumentalists are FANTASTIC to watch perform, and of course there can be no doubting their musical talents,i guess you could say there music is a kind of cross between that of bond and perhaps a hint there of kitaro style too,if you like either of these artists it a good probability you will enjoy listening to the 12 girls band too, they play acoustic chinese instruments, string, woodwind and even some percussion on one track, they are accompanied by a western style backing band

I have heard ALOT of acid/modern jazz music and I would say this album is easily the best I've ever come across in that genre. The amount of sheer talent on this CD is simply stunning. Every single track is THAT good! Have a listen and see for yourself. If anyone else has heard an acid jazz CD that compares to this, I'd sure like to know about it!
