Editorial Reviews

This French-born singer known simply as Cherie possesses a vocal acumen and presence that belies her nineteen years, fully embodying her material in a way that no one has since Celine Dion in her salad days--but thankfully escaping much of the stodginess and banality that colors some of the Canadian singer's work. Both elegant and saucy, Cherie gives a modern edge to what essentially are power ballads, like the heart-tugging "Older Than My Years," and the winsome and precious "Say You Love Me." But the peak moment of the entire CD is the when Cherie bolsters the anthemic "I'm Ready," with a sample of Foreigner's "Urgent," which gives the already compelling track some flash and grit. --Jaan Uhelszki

While countless fans flock to see soprano Renee Fleming's performances of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro because she's got the voice and the dramatic ability to handle such meaty roles, the versatile singer throws her fans a curveball on Haunted Heart, singing popular standards and ballads as well as a few altered classical pieces. In her liner notes, Fleming calls this album a "look back at the road not taken" -- she played a weekly gig in a jazz club while in school. Nonetheless, her feel for the material here is undeniable. Interestingly, she drops her voice a full octave from her usual tessitura, and the change reveals a robust gospel-oriented approach filled with dramatic breaths and moans. The lyrical Fred Hersch (piano) and the idiosyncratic Bill Frisell (guitar) provide support, and both are adventurous jazz players who create subtle and uniquely haunting backdrops. It adds up to an interesting cross-section of ideas well carried off by the generous talents of all involved. --Tad Hendrickson

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Sublime and ridiculous.......2007-06-13

The sublime: much of the artistry of this recording is about sound, and the subtle blending/responding of voice with guitar sounds and / or piano sounds. It is in the sensitive musical interplay between the artists where this effort shines. Definitely not recommended for road trips!

The ridiculous: Fleming ended the majority of most phrases in most of the songs with a guttural of some sort which for me becomes irritating to the point of distraction. These punctuations are mostly quite awful: really tasteless, clumsy, and overused big time and I'm amazed at how this ever got released. Without these ersatz testifyin' noises this CD would be stunning.

So, if you have the ability and inclination to edit out this garbage from your perception as you listen I think you'll be glad you experienced these artists at work together. (Unfortunately I'm not up to it).

2 out of 5 stars Eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww.......2007-06-06

Ugh. Like a manufactured home vs. a stick-built house, Fleming's manufactured (aka "training and technique") blues voice compares unfavorably to other jazz/blues singers/lounge acts. Would not, COULD not, listen to this recording straight through--one big long, breathy, minor key train wreck in the making. Took the CD on a road trip and had to pull over and remove from queue--either that or drive into a wall.

3 out of 5 stars Better than I thought it would be.......2007-04-10

I have to admit, Haunted Heart was a lot better than I thought it would be,especially her recordings of "River", "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress, "My Cherie Amour" and "In my life".
I think this is the most artistically successful recording of Pop/Jazz by a classical singer. I enjoyed it even better than the Anna Sophie Von Otter'/ Elvis Costello CD.
The perspective I am coming from is that of a classical singer who started out as a pop singer/songwriter. I perform and teach cross-genre but love a world class instrument such as Flemming's
I wanted to get the perspective of a friend who used to sing jingles and is also a trained singer but is usually critical of any attempts that opera singers make at crossing -over.
My friend is very familiar with Flemming's voice, but did not recognise it in this context when I played the CD for her. Her reaction was very complimentary, although she did comment that the diction was a bit strange.
She then played it for her brother a well known jazz singer and arranger who had a somewhat negative reaction. He found the singing to be overly dark and round. He prefers a cleaner more 'spoken' approach to this style of singing. I understand this perspective and therefore personally prefer Ella to Sarah as well, but let's not get too picky. Obviously, Rene Flemming is of the Sarah Vaghan School of jazz singing, which is not too shabby.

I will continue to enjoy this CD and will wait for another opera diva to top this one. But, somehow I think the next really good CD of Pop/ jazz from an opera star will also come from Rene.

To those who have been unreasonably mean and negative towards her, I can only say you are not fit to polish her shoes!

5 out of 5 stars Brava Renee.......2007-04-09

This talented woman can sing anything. I really enjoyed this cd with the lights turned down and a glass of wine to relax after a very stressful day at work. Renee could definitely have another singing career outside of opera should she choose. Hearing her drop that gorgeous voice down one octave rivals the best chanteuses in the business - Cassandra Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Regina Belle, Sarah Vaughan, etc. This cd of different musical styles reminds me of Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson, two great singers whom could interpret any song genre and make their versions special. I loved all the songs and the standouts here are "Haunted Heart", "River", "My One and Only Love", "My Cherie Amour", "Cancao do Amor", and Beatles "In My Life", and "Hard Times Come Again No More".
I hope Renee keeps recording whatever catches her fancy because I'll certainly always listen.

5 out of 5 stars Art is always new. .......2007-03-10

Renee Fleming is an artist bringing us something new, and beautiful. The poor will always be with us as manifest in those who resent other's movement from their established zones. Renee Fleming is a great female voice with accomplishments her detractors will never have, but in their dreams.

I welcome Renee's elan demonstrated with her recent recordings, Love sublime with Brad Mehldau, and Haunted Heart with Fred Hersch and Bill Frissell. Bravery, fun, and talent combined by artists and for people who are listening. Hearing long time favorites Mehldau, Hersch, and Frissell is all the more sublime.

4 out of 5 stars cut the filler and you've got 5 stars........2006-02-21

What a joy to hear Stevie's early music tied to his Motown era. Thia album contains some of his best if not some of the all time greatest Motown joints ever in "My Cherie Amor" and "Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday." The clarity of Stevie's voice underscores the simple but effective writing on lesser known gems like "The Shadow Of Your Smile" and "Hello Young Lovers." And I must be totally honest and admit I bought the album largely because of "Angie Girl" maybe my favorite pre Tamla Wonder song. Although a little long in the tooth with some fluff (he could have kept the hideous cover of The Doors "Light My Fire) this is an enjoyable selection from the formative years of Stevie's stellar resume.

3 out of 5 stars a final album of cover versions and his last of the 1960s .......2004-12-14

stevie wonder's last and final album for the decade of the 1960s
1969's"my cherie amour"would also be officially his last studio
album that contains cover versions of other artist's songs and a
mixture of his own originals. and 2 my amazement, mr. wonder pulls at all stops 2 give his unique versions of these songs the "wonder way"...and in his classic vocal stylings and musicianship.the album opens with a beautiful wonder original, the classic 'my cherie amour'which was co-written with the beautiful sylvia moy and henry cosby.the song has one of the most beautiful lines and melody in the history of music:'my cherie amour, lovely as a summer day-my cherie amour, distant as the milky way'...this song is without question an unforgetable classic.side one of the original vinyl album opens with that wonder classic and from there wonder brings his musical harmonica uniqueness and vocals 2 the cover versions updated with the upbeat late 1960s style such as 'hello young lovers'/'at last'/and a splendid cover version of the doors 1967 classic 'light my fire'...wonder's version of 'the shadow of your smile'is without a doubt a very relaxing calm groove that has similar shadings to 'my cherie amour'not by way of the lyrics but by it's musical presentation.(also around this period, wonder recorded a remake of leslie bricusse and syral ornadel's if i ruled the world'which was not included in this album but was included in wonder's three record anthology "looking back" which was originally released in 1977)'you and me'is sung with joyous sunshine from the heart and the musicbeat is moderately warm.side two of the original vinyl album opens with two funky jams:'pearl'as wonder sings with excitement in that he declares her as the sweetest girl in the world.'somebody knows, somebody cares'is another wonder original co-written with his mother lula hardaway, henry cosby, and sylvia moy.the song is about a person who is missing home and wants to comeback,of which wonder and his love who dreams of rocky hills and little cornfields and talking to friendly folks-the hometown folks who knows and cares that their native son is coming home.this track is funky and harmonica funkafied with wonder's high energy vocals and some powerful background vocalists.'yester-me,yester you, yesterday'which was written by ron miller and b.wells was another hit single release.a classic song about young love and regret between a boy and girl that speaks about a simpler time in life with happy dreams:'where did it go?-that yesterglow?'i had a dream so did you...life was warm and love was true'/the beautiful 'angie girl'(which was co-written with sylvia moy and henry cosby) was wonder's true real life lovesong to his love at that time a girl by the name of angela satterwhite whom wonder had met in los angeles, california in the late sixties.'give your love'another wonder original (co-written with d.hunter and henry cosby) is a dark haunting slow lovesong that has a masterful complex piano piece composed by wonder with beautiful backing strings.this track soars with incredible moods-it has incredible highs and incredible lows and a nice solo part with just wonder's voice and piano which starts the song off.wonder delivers this incredible line to his woman in the song to set off this beautiful love affair:'when i look at love,i look at you.look at me and you'll see the love is burning inside me,but the flame needs you to make it brighter, give to me what you see, make the moment a lifetime'...now i ask you aren't these incredible lines for a woman to hear or what?the opening piano chords of this haunting song are a precursor to a wonder song that he would do many years later on a track entitled 'make sure you're sure'(from the jungle fever soundtrack,1991).'give your love'with it's effective dark shadings, is an overlooked classic wonder lovesong.(also during this period, wonder also wrote a similar song related to 'give your love',a track entitled 'this town'(a more darker twin to 'give your love')which has a more lusher sound was written for the soul/rock band(the)rotary connection, and is available on the album-"songs"/rotary connection.) the final track,'i've got you'of which stevie had co-written with the beautiful sylvia moy is a very nice concluding song about someone in town seeing his woman running around-only that the person had her mixed up with another girl in town.and there is no doubt in his heart that he knows that his woman loves him:...in a thousand little words he can tell that she really loves him...this song has a nice moderate beat including wonder's classic harmonica solo near the conclusion of the song as the background vocalists backing wonder add a nice cushion to the song complementing wonder's vocals nicely.stevie wonder's "my cherie amour"(1969)was an end of an era for him during this period of which motown albums had no concept and were recorded for the enhancement of singles only mixed in with cover versions.the new decade of the seventies were on the horizon where he would attain creative freedom and would later be a legendary musical force to be reckoned with...

4 out of 5 stars Follow Up To 'Life'.......2004-07-23

The title track not withstanding this album seems thrown
together in comparasin to what came before.Once again Stevie
reinvents "Hello Young Lovers","At Last" and even "Light My
Fire" in his own charming way but the arrangements are downright
bizzare and make little sence even by Motown standards. They
even tacked on "Yester Me,Yester You",a fairly old single on
whitch Stevie's voice is still cracking a bit on the high notes.
An okay album with great songs like "You And Me" but there is
definately some filler here.

5 out of 5 stars Assembly-Line Perfection.......2004-03-28

I've recently started a mission to collect as much classic albums by the genius Stevie Wonder-childhood & adult albums-as I can possibly obtain. So far, I have gotten most of the albums many have considered Mr. Wonder made at his artistic zenith. Of his childhood albums, so far, I've gotten "For Once In My Life" (1968) and "My Cherie Amour" (1969). Between the two, I anticipated the latter to be my most consistent favorite. I was right. When I first heard samples from "My Cherie Amour" on Amazon.com, I was enthralled by each one, despite the thirty seconds. I became determined to get the album. Now that I have it, I listen to it, enjoying every minute of it. The title track is a phenomenal ballad, "Hello Young Lovers" is a great follow-up, and "At Last" is very nice. It makes me wonder though, is the "At Last" Stevie made the same one that Etta James made? I guess I'll find out eventually. "Light My Fire" is one of the samples which first got me hyped to get the abum. Stevie makes this cover sound so good, and his harmonica playing on it keeps the head rocking. The classic standard "The Shadow Of Your Smile" has those simple lyrics I've always wanted to sing myself. Stevie dosen't sound half bad on that one. The ones that follow are modest, but Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday, Angie Girl, and I've Got You are among my vast favorites on this young Wonder-ful album.

3 out of 5 stars Skip a few, love the rest.......2003-07-11

The title track to "My Cherie Amour" is one of Motown's best from the 1960's. This album is a peculiar mix of songs, some of which had been recorded as early as 1966 but held from release until this album in 1969. Following the title track is a cover of Rogers and Hammerstein's "Hello Young Lovers." It's a spritely, happy song that fits well the third song, a cover of the standard "At Last." This is done surprisingly upbeat, and is more befitting of the lyrics. I love it! This cover-crazy album features even more remakes: "Light my Fire" is set at a relaxed mid-tempo, bolstered by harmonica and occasional orchestration, and nothing exceptional (or bad) is done with the standard "The Shadow of Your Smile." The middle of the album drags a bit with a few filler songs, but picks up a bit with the hit "Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday" and the soft, charming "Angie Girl." Though the album isn't exactly cohesive, there are a few delightful songs you won't find elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Whaaat? This from a former Runaway?.......2005-08-08

NOT Runaways music. If you're a Runaways fan, that does NOT mean you will immediately become a fan of Currie as a solo artist.
It's a totally different type of music---I don't even know what to call it. I'd like to say Pop, but it's too boring; I'm angry at myself for jumping in and buying all of these cds because I just found The Runaways and loved all of their stuff (except for "and now..." which I liked, not loved).
"Beauty's only skin deep" fares only slightly better, as it has some "cute" harmonies. This is a real dud....See if you can give it a listen before you rush to buy it. I wish I had.

4 out of 5 stars It finally has the sexy cover shot it deserves!.......2003-01-19

Capitol Records scrapped this delectable cover pic of the foxy Currie sisters for a spandex-'n-slanted scenery pose back in 1980, so it's great to get the original back. The CD comes with decent extra tracks recently recorded by Cherie, who sounds tougher and more determined than ever. I have always loved her soaring vocal work-out on "This Time" and Marie holds her own belting out a cover of "Overnight Sensation"(which is better than Eric Carmen's version). Now all we need is a DVD of the Currie sisters singing "Messin'" on Sha-Na-Na and the world can rest easy... B+

1 out of 5 stars Huh? Wha?? I must've fallen asleep.......2002-07-27

What a boring CD...Not a single track is driven; this isn't rock and roll...It's the soundtrack to a seventies after school special...

1 out of 5 stars Ex Runaway and twin sister re-visited.......2001-11-20

A must for Runaways collectors only. Unimpressive tracks which lean towards "beige" at best. A re-make of Cherry Bomb is devoid of all the sexuality and rocking raunch that made the first version a classic. Rent Foxes and Parasite instead, two cool retro Cherie flicks. The CD is dissapointing, bland...

5 out of 5 stars a great female lead.......2001-06-12

The Runaways were always a fav of mine...especially Cherie. Her voice had twice the depth and feeling of Joan Jett's. So I rolled the dice on this one and liked it immediately. It walks the line between Runaway's-style tough rock and classic late 70s pop/rock arrangements (you'd swear Kenny Loggins was producing on a few). The musicianship is first-rate (how did they get Steve Lukather?) Cherie solos on the majority of original cuts and ALL of the bonus cuts (7 of 'em!) It's ends up being a Cherie solo project, as it should be.

2 out of 5 stars Where's Tait?.......2007-07-05

I ordered this CD specifically for Michael Tait's version of "How Great Thou Art" and when I received my CD, the song was not on there! I'm very disappointed. If you are ordering this CD, make sure Tait's song is on the CD!

5 out of 5 stars Old tunes, new style.......2006-03-10

For years I have searched for a song that I knew as "Jesus Loves You - Alleluia style". When I bought this CD I had no clue that I would find it! It is known on this CD as "Amazing Grace" (it does have the beautiful alleluia part!).
The arrangements of the hymns could be passed off as songs written in the last 20 years. If you are into "contemporary" worship but also appreciate the rich heritage of the hymns then this is the CD for you.
This is one CD that may take up perminant residence in your CD player!

5 out of 5 stars Valuable compendium.......2007-01-24

This set is extremely valuable, not only as an overview of Dame Joans career but because it contains three complete LP sets that have been very hard to find. The sets are the 2 LP French opera (operetta) set, the Mozart album and the Wagner album. Although some of these do not show her to her best advantage (the Wagner set) they all have some very beautiful things and the French items are superb. The annotations and photos are interesting as well and there are some piano songs with Bonynge that are released here for the first time along with a scene from a live Covent Garden Norma.

5 out of 5 stars Rareties available on CD at last!.......2006-03-29

While Joan Sutherland has recorded a number of impressive aria collections throughout the many years of her recording career, they tend to get lost in the shuffle of the countless reissues Decca/London has endlessly repackaged. While some of the original collections have appeared intact on CD--"The Art of the Prima Donna," "The Age of Bel Canto," "Love Live Forever" (her operetta collection that was originally titled "The Golden Age of Operetta"), to name a few--others are currently represented in the CD catalogue by only a few selections on discs that also include excerpts from complete opera recordings or duplicates of selections from other original collections. As a result, it has been impossible to assemble a CD collection of her recordings without a LOT of duplication, and some of the most interesting collections are still unavailable (e.g. "Command Performance" and "Serate Musicale").

While this newest set does include a lot of bits of this and that, ranging from her very first LPs to excerpts from complete recordings most Sutherland fans already have and a few "live" performances, what is perhaps most significant about it is that it features the complete contents of the "Sutherland Sings Wagner" LP--a real repertoire departure for her--and the double-LP album called "French Opera Gala" (in the U.S.--the British title was "Romantic French Arias"), neither of which, to the best of my knowledge, has been available on CD before. "Opera News" magazine once ran an article in which they asked various stars to name the one album that they felt best represented their artistry for future generations, and Dame Joan selected the "French Opera Gala," so for Sutherland fans, this is a long-awaited treat.

I'm not going to waste space saying how miraculous I consider Dame Joan's artistry. If you are familiar with her work already, you know whether you adore her or not; and if you aren't, this massive set is probably not the best place to start (that would be "The Art of the Prima Donna" album that introduced her to most listeners decades ago)--especially since this newest set doesn't contain the lyrics, a must for newcomers. Let's hope Decca/London gets around to releasing the rest of her recordings intact instead of endlessly scrambling and repackaging the same selections over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2006-01-31

I first heard of Dame Sutherland while on the internet while listening to a internet radio station. I was instantly a fan, her control, technique, and tone is perfectly executed and rivals the equally fantastic Maria Callas. She has a powerful voice and presence that will evoke every emotion from her listeners. Highly recommended to all Opera Diva fans.

5 out of 5 stars WHO ELSE CAN SING LIKE THIS TODAY?.......2005-04-10

This is Decca's second multi disc evaluation of this fantastic singer's long career and many recordings. True that a lot on the first set is duplicated here, but there are a few exceptions here and there that make it a worthy addition. Of particular interest are the very early items of Handel and Italian baroque arias, some forgotten song recordings and a live performance of the duet from Norma. It can't be said too many times - who can sing like this today? For sheer vocalism it's hard to find anyone on the same wavelength. This set will give very young opera goers an idea of what they missed.

5 out of 5 stars very good pop CD.......2007-06-28

I saw Cherie in concert when she was opening for Clay Aiken. She's a great singer and performer. Reminded me of a young Celine Dion. Her debut album is a great mix of dance tunes and pop ballads. Aimed at teens but adults will enjoy it too.

4 out of 5 stars Great voice.......2007-01-03

Cherie has a great voice. The tunes are basic pop music. It's fun, but nothing I'll listen to every week. But, I cannot say enough about her voice.

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD Ever!.......2006-06-30

I wish I could rate this album with more than 5 stars! I think this is the best album I ever heard.
1.- I'M READY: Her first hit, an excelent beat, great lyrics too.
2.- SAY YOU LOVE ME:A nice and romantic song, very deep.
3.- OLDER THAN MY YEARS: The best song ever! It reminds me someone I know.
4.- IT'S YOUR LOVE: Specially if you are in love, you should hear it.
5.- I BELIEVE IN YOU: Nice beat, and cool lyrics.
6.- BETCHA NEVER: Excelent lyrics, a nice arabian sound.
7.- BODY, SOUL & HEART: Perfect song! cool lyrics.
8.- I BELONG: Dedicated for someone she loves.
9.- FOOL: Perfect lyrics, voice and sound.
10.- RUSH: Cool beat and lyrics.
11.- THE PROMISE: Great song!
12.-MY WAY BACK HOME: The lst song, deep and full of Cherie's voice and energy.
I wish she could come back to the stage again and release a new album.

1 out of 5 stars An outright and dastardly rip-off of Foreigner.......2005-12-17

I heard "I'm Ready" at least fifteen times before I finally knew who sang it. Every time it played I thought "Oh, this is Foreigner's 'Urgent', eh?" NO WAY! Cherie just samples the riff from that song, and adds new words. I CAN'T FREAKIN' BELIEVE SHE JUST BLATANTLY RIPS IT OFF FROM THEM!! DOES SHE THINK PEOPLE AREN'T GOING TO KNOW?
Hey, whatever, Cherie! Enjoy your 15 SECONDS of fame, because you obviously have no talent or freakin' originality. ANYONE WHO BUYS THIS ALBUM IS CONTRIBUTING TO THIEVERY OF ROCK MUSIC CLASSICS BY STUPID, LAZY PRODUCERS.
If this is the least you expect from your music, consumer, GOD made a mistake giving you ears and a fat wallet.

3 out of 5 stars Good Voice, A Lot of Filler.......2005-08-01

I think Cherie has a very strong voice, even though I do not believe she is near Celine Dion yet like others have said but she still has vocals. I love her ballad Older Than My Years, so I bought the album on that ballad alone. I didn't like I'm Ready too much, fun, but nothing to remember. I found myself liking her slower songs more than anything, but they're not strong lyrics- wise. She sings about the same old things, relationships, and I understand, relationships are a big part of our lives...but not for a whole c.d. She needs to learn to grow more creative with the lyrics and start writing some songs that are different than just the same old I love you- I hate you kind of songs that are so overdone these days. A few songs yes that's all right, but having a whole c.d. like that is just boring and repitive. I think Cherie could go great places and I do encourage more ballads, but I also encourage other songs as well, like about other things in her life and whatnot besides her ex boyfriend or her new crush. There is more to life than relationships and I want to hear more of that from her. A lot of the songs are filler, but sung by her, she makes them beautiful to hear yet I still forget many of the songs since they are so similar to other artists' songs and do not stand out. Get some better lyrics Cherie, and I think you'll be great. Your voice is already sensational.
The songs that stand out on here are Older Than My years- still my favorite song on this album, It's Your Love, I Belong- great!, The Promise, and My Way Back Home. I'm Ready and Betcha Never are supposed to be the highlighted songs on this album but I disagree. I think the slower, softer songs on here are the better songs and highlight Cherie's vocals much better.

4 out of 5 stars A tempting treasury, but only a few performances are great.......2007-02-03

Ten discs of Berlioz is a sumptuous offering, and temptingly cheap at Amazon Marketplace. DG has used this occasion to repackage some outstanding performances. At the top of the list goes James Levine's electrifying Requiem from Berlin, with playing and singing to match the conductor's inspiration. Also exciting--perhaps surprisingly so--is Abbado's Te Deum, which has rawer edges and sharper focus than Colin Davis's on Philips, long the standard version.

Dropping down a notch in quality, we have an elegantly played Romeo et Juliette by the Boston Symphony, superbly recorded, that has few rivals for refined virtuosity. But after a while Seiji Ozawa's approach seems to lack depth and meaning; he's skating over the surface of the musical drama, however brilliantly. Sharp and brilliant also describes Myung-Whun Chung's contribution, a Symponie fantastique, two overtures, and the Royal Hunt and Storm from Les Troyens, all with his well-trained Bastille Opera orchestra. Chung is to the manner born in Berlioz, but so are greater conductors in these works, including Munch and Markevitch.

At about the same quality level I'd place the Mort de Cleopatre, a dullish early vocal scene sung with plushness by Jessye Norman, and Kiri Te Kanawa's Les Nuits d'Ete, which is ravishing in terms of sheer vocalism but otherwise vacant. Daniel Barenboim's slack conducting does the piece no favors, either, which holds true on a much larger scale for his Damnation of Faust. This is a typical Barenboim product, full of lush sounds, excellent singing, big-scale orchestral work, but leading to a meager artistic payoff. Barenboim's Faust isn't remotely competitive with Markevitch, Chung, Solti, Pretre, and others in this work. It's great to hear Domingo in the title role, but the conducting is so routine that I'm not sure the overall experience is worth it.

We get odds and ends of varying quality: the rarely recorded Tristia done superbly by Boulez, an uneven batch of songs that previously appeared in their own double-CD set (a chore to listen to in its entirety, despite the occasional gem), and a pedestrain Harold in Italy conducted by Lorin Maazel in Berlin, a performance that DG surely could have bettered by looking deeper into their vaults.

In all, I can't see investing in such an uneven collection except at super-budget price. If you do a little searching, all the best things here can be gotten separately, and the lesser recordings pale by comparison with classic Berlioz from Colin Davis, Charles Munch, and Igor Markevitch.

5 out of 5 stars Berlioz with immaginative variety.......2003-10-30

This box makes a nice alternative to the Philips boxes under Colin Davis. Not to take anything away from Davis. His Berlioz cycle certainly ranks up there with the elite for recording achievements. But many will not want to invest in all 3 boxes, so Universal has brought us a great compilation of some of Berlioz' best works from a variety of performers with different styles.
The jewel has to be Ozawa's unsurpassed Romeo and Juliet. This 1976 studio recording had its birth at the Tanglewood Festival and features excellent soloists (Julia Hamari, Jose Van Dam, and Jean Dupouy), a very competent choir, and of course the reliable Boston SO. The recording is of outstanding quality. It seems cleaned up a little from what I remember of the CDs from the mid 80s; much more spacious, less muddy sounding. I especially like the chorus in the hushed night scene.
Barenboim's Damnaton is perdictably Furtwangler-like in tempo, and again features top notch singers in Fischer Dieskau, Jules Bastin, & Placido Domingo; Yvonne Minto is probably not in the same class with the others, but she's more than acceptable.
Levine directs a well recorded and balanced classical-sounding Requiem, and Abbado is more than competent in the Te Deum.
Chung's Fantastique is fun and enjoyable, if not first-class.
The rest of the works are very commendable, if not top-of-the-class.
In short, you can't go wrong for the price, and if you love Berlioz' Romeo, you've got to get this box just for the Ozawa gem.

    5 out of 5 stars Great pop/rock album.......2006-01-05

I disagree with many of the reviewers. I am an orginal Runaways fan and got to see them live. I love their music but also love all of Cherie's solo stuff. I think this record has a lot of energy and showcases what a beautiful and unique voice Cherie has. I bought this record in 1980 when it first came out (as Messin with the boys) and wore it out. I am so happy to have it on CD now. This isn't Runaways style music but it is possible to love both unless you are really narrowminded.

    4 out of 5 stars Great songs..poor tracking though.......2003-10-21

First of all, I still have the LP "Messing With The Boys" and always liked it. Being a long time "Runaways" fan, I have been looking for a CD release of this album! Well, here it is! Unfortunetly, the tracking between songs is choppy! That 's a major let down. The track "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" has static too! Bummer! Although, this CD is worth the 4 stars JUST on it's including the Runaways tracks "Hollywood Dreams", "Strawberry Fields Are Forever" & "Here Comes the Sun" from the rare "Flaming Schoolgirls" LP. Sounding GREAT! Right from the masters! Runaways, Cherie Curie & Jettheads gotta get this!
I wonder if the other CD has better tracking. I guess I have to buy that one too to find out! To be continued......

    4 out of 5 stars A decent import quickie.......2003-01-19

An Australian pressing of Cherie & Marie's "Messin' With the Boys", augumented with bonus tracks from Cherie's solo outing "Beauty's Only Skin Deep", a nice B-side ("Longer Than Forever", co-written by Marie), a Runaways outtake (the cute "Hollywood Dream"), and two very fine Beatles covers Cherie used as auditioning material for a spot in the movie "Sgt. Pepper's" (she didn't get the part). Quite a package for one cheap price, though Kim Fowley's acerbic liner notes are probably more enjoyable than the music, which occasionally sounds stilted or dated. 'B'

1 out of 5 stars Young and Sleepy.........2001-12-06

A passionless recording. Lacks any of the drive, pulse, ambition, edge, rage and fun of The Runaways. Corny songs that the artists don't believe in as they sing them...so how can we?

    4 out of 5 stars young & wild.......1999-12-01

Ex-Runaways vocalist teams up with twin sister Marie on this album. Although panned by critics, this album features superior vocal and instrumental talent. The music Cherie recorded with the Runaways (featuring Joan Jett and Lita Ford) leaned more toward new wave, this album offers a broader range of rock and roll, landing more between Pat Benatar and Stevie Nicks. Many of the musicans on this album recorded with 80's superband Toto. Would like to hear more from this duo.

    4 out of 5 stars Verdi rarities.......2003-06-25

These recordings of alternative arias, written for demanding tenors or special circumstances, date from 1978 and 1980 and until Domingo's 4CD complete Verdi Tenor arias box set appeared on DG in 2001, were pretty well the only recordings available. Even now, though this CD is short measure at 42'50", this is still a bargain. Particularly since the full price but textless highlight disc DG have also issued from Domingo's 4CD set contains none of the rarities.

In any case this recording from over 20 years earlier finds Pavarotti in fine voice and responding well to Abbado and La Scala's orchestra. The gem of the collection is A toi que j'ai chérie from Les vêpres sicilliennes, making one wonder why there still isn't a recording of this marvellous opera in the original French.

NB: This reviewer has the Warner Fonit version of the current CD "Verdi Pagine Inedite" which has Italian texts but no translations, so cannot comment on whether the US version provides a libretto.

    5 out of 5 stars A True Rarity.......2000-12-07

This recording of Verdi rarities is a must have for any Verdi fan (and I am). I had read in Budden's excellent books(years before this recording was released) that Verdi composed alternative arias for some of his operas. I was so pleased to finally be able to hear them. Pavarotti has since sung (and now recorded) Ernani with the additional aria. I personally prefer the Vepres alternate to the original, (not that I would lose it). The Aida overture is typical of Verdi's pastiche overtures, and well constructed, but he was correct in leaving the original shorter prelude in place. It is always fascinating to hear how a composer develops his works. With Verdi there are existing recordings (if you look around hard enough) of the early versions of works later heavilly revised (MacBeth, Don Carlos, Boccanegra, et al). Here's a chance to hear the aria second thoughts or special requests. They provide insight and belie the common belief that Verdi ignored performers' requests. It's a peek into the workshop of a master, and certainly worth a look.
