In the near-constant deluge of singer-songwriters to emerge in recent years, Willy Mason towers above the rest through sheer quality. Listening to the 12 tracks on his debut album Where the Humans Eat, you'd be forgiven for mistaking this 20-year-old native of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts for someone much older and more experienced. His off-kilter delivery--a bit off-key, a bit off-time--is just part of his charm. But Mason's real talent is as a songwriter, and he is almost without peer amongst his contemporaries. "It's a hard hand to hold / that is looking for control" he sings on "Hard Hand to Hold", a song about homelessness and disaffection that never preaches or judges. His keen observations and deft lyrics place him in an American tradition that includes Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams. Like the best protest singers, Mason is not motivated by anger at the way the world is, but hope in what the world can be. As a result, Where the Humans Eat is sweet, simple and altogether excellent. --Robert Burrow

Product Description
The debut full-length from this Martha's Vineyard native is a sweet and soulful testament to youth's subtle, inherent brilliance. This is no ordinary teenager; he's a charming, graceful troubadour who's just as comfortable opening for The Grateful Dead as he is Death Cab For Cutie, delivering music easily cherished by all crowds and cross sections.

5 out of 5 stars It's Not That He's Trying To Accomplish What Dylan Did.......2006-10-30

I don't think Willy really cares. He's just who he is. Doing what he must. Exhale.
Granted, he's the only kid I've heard worthy to take on Dylan's mantle... as Dylan did Woody's.
And, as the opener for Beth Orton, the crowd didn't appreciate him... just as Dylan first starting out.

5 out of 5 stars The single greatest record I've heard in a long, long time.......2006-07-01

I remember sitting in my friend's car, driving back home from Dylan, and he had this record playing. I immediately fell in love with this new artist. I later found out it was Willy Mason. He's a familiar voice to me, and speaks to me in such a way that makes me want to keep listening over and over. Just get the record, honestly, you won't regret it.

    4 out of 5 stars No Words........2006-01-23

I went to high school with Willy. Now that would make you think that I'm biased in my view of him, but if you look above there are only 4 stars. I have been listening to Willy and his family make music forever, and for the longest time, I wasn't that impressed with him.
This album made me a fan of a friend. His maturity shines through this album. It's raw, it's beautiful and most of all, it's truthful. I find truth has gotten quite lost lately in music. And this album helps to bring it back.
If you don't own this CD, you're missing out. This young man has something to say, and it's something we all need to hear.

5 out of 5 stars Album of great political importance.......2005-11-16

Where has this guy been hiding? Why are there not more musicians making music like this? Willy Mason is a modern day singer songwriter who has rediscovered what music should be about. His folk rock songs bring meaning and purpose back to music that has been missing for far too long. For a nineteen year old, the message he spreads shows his maturity and awareness about the real issues that face our planet in the twenty first century.

It's hard to pin point an area on this album that is better than another. The opening track sets the tone for the album, immediately striking you and making you go WOW! Quickly you realise that Willy Mason is a name that you want to tell all your left wing friends. His pessimistic view towards globalisation and celebrity role-models are expressed in such a convincing way that even your right wing friends might be swayed. The two standout tracks that need individual attention are `Our Town', an anti-war song about corruption and dishonesty and `Oxygen', about the problems our children face growing up in the technological age. Both speak about issues that our so-called music icons fail miserably in addressing.

Willy Mason is attempting to do what Bob Dylan and others did in the sixties. If you believe that protest songs are important in providing an alternative political message then you will certainly like this album.

    3 out of 5 stars hmmm, OK.......2005-08-27

Oxygen is a great track, vying to be amongst the songs of the year. Unfortunately it is the best thing on this album by a mile. Disappointing.
