Dave Navarro is best known as the guitarist for Jane's Addiction and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but on Trust No One, he comes into his own. The talented axman plays nearly every instrument but the drums on this record, showing off his polished set of pipes as well. Trust No One is a sharp diversion from both Jane's Addiction's trippy punk aggression and the Chili Peppers' chest-thumping funk. Interestingly, the album comes closer to Soundgarden than either of Navarro's former bands: it's a post-grunge mix of acoustic jingles that build into charging rock riffs, in a slightly softer version of the former Seattle band's mighty noise. The music is just a vehicle to Navarro's tortured soul, though, which is given the spotlight in lyrics uncovering his feelings of emptiness. Even as his sanity seems to spiral downward, Navarro's skilled playing still makes these songs soar--no self-pitying here. The only weak spots on the album are the song "Not for Nothing" (didn't Nine Inch Nails already write this one as "Starfuckers, Inc."?) and the occasional odd Navarro rhyme ("There is no love left in your eyes / There is love left in your thighs"). Both can be forgiven, though, in an album that is an otherwise stellar one-man production of mainstream modern rock. --Jennifer Maerz

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected.......2007-07-26

This is a totaly different and complete album then what I've ever heard in the past. The entire CD truly tells the story of what Dave went through in his past. It is astonishing on how the power of his lyrics and the music encompassing it are impletemented in this dark opera that he has conducted. Truly a marvel to listen too with that smokey voice and the change of tempo.

5 out of 5 stars A Voyeuristic Treat.......2006-10-07

I love all kinds of music, and granted I am a fan of Navarro's but this album is transcendent. It quite literally haunts me. There are no honest comparisons in my opinion that can be made to previous collaborative work. Hearing his voice alone is a revelation... soothing and personal, sometimes almost a whisper.

But I think the kicker for me is the amazing openness he shows in this album. Each song is a personal odyssey; inventive, and emotionally raw. Some say dark and depressing but I think that assessment misses a big component...Dave's wicked sense of humor and irony. To me, soaring riffs, playful instrumentation and lyrics keep the overall tone of the album far from tragic...to me it's a self-deprecating triumph for Dave Navarro.

As a back-story...I read Dave's biographical book "Don't Do This At Home" at the same time I was becoming familiar with the album so Dave's sometimes-cryptic lyrics fit into place for me. His struggles with addiction, personal loss and relationships are all there.
If you don't know Dave's story and are at all interested I would recommend both the album and the book. If you are a fan of the man, not just his musical past, this combination is a real voyeuristic treat.

Comparable Music: Nothing really in my opinion. Kind of like Lou Reed meets Jimi Hendrix. Inventive and beautifully melodic...with a measure of scorching guitar.

5 out of 5 stars This CD helped me clean up my life........2005-11-30

This CD helped me clean up my life. Dave Navarro is brutally honest here, and this record speaks to me. Trust Noone by Dave Navarro helped me get clean. Also, Corinna Fugate, an underground singer's CD 'Chasing the Ghost' helped me.

4 out of 5 stars good listen.......2005-07-03

I've had this disc a long time and I'm happy to say it's found a home in my collection as a long steady, not a flash in the pan. In some way the cd seems quiet. The tracks aren't particualaring bombastic or laden with pop hooks but they are very easy to listen to. Dave has put together an interesting blend of song writing (approached modestly for a guitar virtuoso), tight production and what sounds like a series of open-ended conversations, mostly with himself.

as for the songs... Rexall was the ear-catching single, one that contains enough poise that it won't wear thin quickly. Not for Nothing is probably the coarsest song on the cd with softly confronational lyrics and guitars that almost buzz with their spiky intensity. My favorites on the cd are Very Little Daylight, Slow Motion Sickness and the Velvet Underground cover Venus in Furs.

Give it a listen and see what you think. It is very different from Jane's Addiction and I fine Dave's voice far more listenable than Perry's.

4 out of 5 stars Trust No One Who Says This Is A Bad Album.......2004-08-29

Dave Navarro's first solo album, "Trust No One", is an impressive first solo effort. Trust no one who says this is a bad album- because they are wrong. The only weak track on this album is "Everything". The rest of the tracks are great, and they all show Navarro's talents as a guitarist, bassist, singer, and songwriter. Navarro is also pretty good at playing a synthesizer. Favorite tracks include: "Rexall", "Mourning Son", (a song Navarro wrote about his mother, who was murdered), "Avoiding the Angel", and "Slow Motion Sickness". All fans of Dave Navarro or Jane's Addiction should check this album out.

This series of 11 church anthems is a sterling example of doing more with less. Though their format is multiple movements for soloists, chorus, and orchestra, inviting grand treatment, Handel had available only a couple of oboes and a small string band and choir (with no violas or altos for numbers 1 to 6). Yet each one of these anthems is a gem. Handel's music captures well the changing moods of the Psalm texts--from somber penitence to serene bliss to infectious joy to the raging of storms and seas. Though James Bowman's arias lie uncomfortably low for him, he and Michael George do fine work; Lynne Dawson, Patrizia Kwella, and Ian Partridge are delightful. Harry Christophers leads his choir and orchestra in subtly inflected and beautifully paced performances. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Divine!.......2007-06-17

These psalms set to music, for use in church services, are divine! Handel never fails to please and the recording is top notch.
Now that you've heard Handel's versions, be sure to check out what Henry Purcell did a generation earlier with the same material.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, I love Handel!!.......2007-04-18

Why haven't I heard of this music before? I have long loved the Messiah, in fact, I have about 15 different CD versions of it! Now I can listen to Handel all year long, and for me this is all new music! If you love Handel's Messiah, you will love this collection! I just started listening to it on my drive to and from work, and I was transported! I enjoy the solos, the duets, and then the whole ensemble singing gloriously together. I am very happy I purchased the entire set!

5 out of 5 stars Why aren't these better known?.......2006-04-14

It boggles my mind that this seems still to be the only complete set of the Anthems available on CD. The first of the discs came out in 1989 or so and volumes 1 and 2 were among the first CDs I ever bought (late adopter, I admit); I eagerly awaited and bought the others as they came out. Not that there's much to criticize about these performances. Oh, you may not like the tenor's very heavy dependence on mixed voice to hit high notes -- I don't mind it and for all I know it's faithful to the style of Handel's day -- or like the sound of the countertenor soloists or even the particular vocal qualities of one or the other of the sopranos (I find nothing wrong with any of them), but the chorus and instrumentalists sing and play crisply and very well. These Anthems were written to be lively and entertaining as well as full of honest devotion. Handel's grasp of English was still shaky at the time, and the choice of metrical versions of the Psalms for many of the texts is, well, questionable. More that one phrase will raise a smile: "That God is great we often have/ By glad experience found/ And seen how he with wond'rous pow'r/ Above all other gods is crown'd" is a prime example -- but listen to the bass (under-used by Handel in these Anthems, sadly: perhaps he lacked a reliable one at the time) sing Handel's setting, which reminds me of a beautiful, affectionate puppy of a large breed: slightly ridiculous, a bit bumbling, but attractive and strong and lovable. Or the chorus about "snares, fire, and brimstone" pouring in a "dreadful mixture" on the wicked: clearly the choristers are having great fun, just as I would, given the chance to sing this absurd version of the Psalmist's words. Buy this set, get your local choral society to sing one or more of these Anthems (I got to sing #11 once), spread the word.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - one of the best Handel CD's availible........2001-11-29

This baroque era "Praise Music" is light years beyond the vacuous pablum that passes for praise music in churches today. I have had these four CD's for almost a decade (previous release) and they are still among my favorites. Almost all the songs (all the spoken music that is - a few songs are instrumental preludes) are Bible scripture verses set to music - similar to what Handel did in the Messiah. The musical quality of the CD is excellent. You would never guess that only 16 people are doing the choral parts. If you only have 10 CD sets of traditional Christian music this CD set should be one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Rediscovered, the Chandos anthems deserve your ears!.......1998-10-27

Handel's Chandos anthems are apparently being rediscovered, as the release of several new recordings bears witness. This set is surely the best available, and is certainly the only complete collection. Especially beautiful are the duets ("O Worship the Lord in the Beauty of Holiness" and "Wash Me Th'roughly") and the tenor's recitatives. Performance is brisk and tight, though never rushed. Those who favor Simon Preston's even snappier style may prefer his rendition of Anthem 10 (now distributed with his very fine, and affordable, "Israel in Egypt"), but overall no one can be disappointed with this collection of too-rarely heard works.

4 out of 5 stars INDUSTRIAL-METAL!!.......1999-10-12

Who cares if they are a local band? I am a fan of industrial metal groups like Fear Factory, and Static X. And I just heard the samples of these songs. Sounds like a cross between KMFDM, Ministry, and White Zombie. But it's definately heavy industrial-metal. So it's got to be good. I gave it four stars because i haven't heard the rest of the lyrics. I haven't seen this group anywhere around here, though. Looks like i'll have to order from you again, amazon!

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly diverse, fast and hard........1999-08-17

...what to say about N17, I have not been able to stop dancingaround my apartment in my unmentionables. I listen to it on mycomputer and my "Start" up button shakes!!

5 out of 5 stars Who is Your God?.......1999-07-23

Where is your god? Why would your god want to torture me? These are just some lines from Religion. November17 will really impress you if you have never heard them before. Very industrial and heavy. Sort of Ministry meets White Zombie meets KMFDM. A very unique experience from these Arizona rockers, I'm still wating for the new one. I guess they want to get their name a little better known first by opening for major bands like Marilyn Manson. Until then, pick this one up and crank it very loud, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars WOW, a mind blowing experience!!!.......1999-07-23

This band will make you bang your head, song after song. My favs are Creation and Religion. I've seen them in concert 3 times, and I would see them many more times. I suggest you hurry up and buy this one and see when they are going to be tearing up a local club near you.

Album Description

The Wizard of Oz a musical with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum and music by Paul Tietjens premiered on June 16, 1902, at the Grand Opera House in Chicago. It was an instant hit and made stars of David Montgomery (the Tin Woodman) and Fred Stone (the Scarecrow). On January 21, 1903 the show opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York. It ran for nine months and set out on the road with a second company right on its heels. The show toured, came back to New York, toured, and returned to New York again many times until finally disbanding around 1911. Stock and amateur companies continued to present it into the 1930s when it was overshadowed by the classic MGM film starring Judy Garland.

The show was legendary for its success and its impact on American culture. It was the Cats or Les Mis of the early 1900s--but the show has been swallowed by history. What made audiences of the early 1900s devour the show and return for more again and again? In this unprecedented 2-CD set—featuring over 145 minutes of vintage recordings and 64 pages of lyrics, photos, notes and synopsis—you can discover how The Wizard of Oz entertained the American public for the first two decades of the 20th century. And like the audiences of nearly a hundred years ago, you can hum along to "Budweiser," "Sammy," and "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay"—everyone's favorite songs from The Wizard of Oz! Also included in this comprehensive collection are recordings from later Oz musicals, The Woggle-Bug and The Tik-Tok Man of Oz written by Oz creator L. Frank Baum, as well as vintage non-Oz recordings by original "Wizard of Oz stars" Montgomery & Stone and Bessie Wynn

5 out of 5 stars A Collection of the Original Oz Stage Productions.......2006-12-07

This Double-Disk Collection contains music from the original and varied Oz Stage Productions: "the Wizard of Oz", "the Woggle-Bug" (based on 'Marvelous Land of Oz) and "the Tik-Tok Man of Oz" (based on 'Ozma of Oz'). There are plenty of "Wizard" songs and music, but there isn't a lot of "Woggle-Bug" and/or "Tik-Tok Man".
I often wondered how different the 1st & Original Production of 'Oz Wizard' was different to the book, and thanks to Mark Evan Schwartz's book "Oz: Before the Rainbow" I found out for myself (WORTH A READ!!). Later I got this CD to go along with the book's stage telling (more or less) and I listened in interest to the songs which, I read, were entirely different to the future Musicals of Oz. The songs are good, but not all of them are actually completely restored to perfection, so the singing may/will sound somewhat muffled. Also, due to the time it was made (for some reason), the songs don't actually fit into the story (even the stage's rewritten story) and sound distant/unrelated. But there are songs that sound similar to the original story ("Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King"). CD 2's Track 3 has music played during Silent Oz Film "His Majesty, Scarecrow" on the MGM 3-Disk DVD.
The best thing about this CD Collection is the two booklets packaged along with the disks: the first (entitled "The Records") has writing on "What the Wizard Was" with a synopsis of the stage production story and "About the Recordings", a listing of all the songs on CD 1 (which are helpful for "Selection" Tracks not specifically named on the back) and notes on the songs like their origins and background. Booklet 2 (entitled "The Lyrics") has the words to the songs (in case you can't make out the words/want to sing-along). BOTH CDs include b&w photos of the actors, performance (few of which can be seen in "Oz: Before the Rainbow" book) and even reprints of a few illustrations made for the stage. The pictures are the best part of this purchase.
The Entirely Different Songs may not fit with the story, original or rewritten, but there's nothing really wrong with the music when one enjoys to what they're listening to.
I know that there is also another 'Oz on Stage' CD Collection called "Before the Rainbow" . . . hmmm, I wonder if I should get that too?

5 out of 5 stars Ain't it a Shame!.......2006-05-20

I think that this is a wonderful album of HISTORICAL value. Not too many people know this, but "the wizard of oz" was made into a smash hit in 1903, but because all the history was BARELY in obscurity, hungry tiger press wanted to educate the blockheads in the world about this remarkable piece of history. that being said, david maxine collected all of the old material, such as Piano rolls (my especial favorite of all of them is "the poppy song", i LOVE the bass notes: "nnn-ded-deh mmmm-ded-deh"), and music boxes, and cylinders, and records!
however, it is quite a shame that that CRAPPY movie with judy garland pushed this lovely musical into obscurity. i would have liked to see it in my day, but it was already lost in darkness, but thanks to the highly DIGNIFIED people in the world, this cd is available!! BUY IT!!!! I *ORDER* YOU!!! YOU CANNOT BE DIGNIFIED WITHOUT THIS REPLACING YOUR "RAP" GARBAGE WITH THIS JEWEL!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Why the 1903 "Wizard" was forgotten.......2004-03-20

This truly remarkable 2-disc collection of old cylinders, discs, music boxes and piano rolls explains why the 1903 musical version of "The Wizard of Oz" did not survive the early thirties. It wasn't because it was before its time or even of its time, but simply because it was way behind the times. Its producers resisted composer's Paul Tietjens' attempts to write plot-driven numbers. His contribution survives only in the incidental music preserved on piano rolls (and the most interesting element on this collection) linking very disparate and even incongruous vaudeville acts by various authors and performers that graced the stage during the musical's multi-decade run. In other words, Baum was telling a story and the songs were telling another... As fascinating as they are for historical reasons, those numbers are commonplace, mostly uninspired flash-in-the-tin-pan ditties, with timid syncopation and a stong reliance on musical clichés. There is not a single standard among them and not even a decent lyric where "fine" doesn't rhyme with "mine" and "love you" doesn't rhyme with "I do"- or even "I know you know I know you do", as happens more than once. As an assemblage of shtick pieces and ephemeral sentimental or nonsensical ditties, this collection cannot be topped and it represents a monumental effort. Without it and its very generous and informative liner notes, I would not have the same appreciation for the absolute genius of Victor Herbert's operettas ("Babes in Toyland" came out the same year) where the more memorable songs are plot-driven and introduced and linked by the most luscious, inventive and varied incidental music ever heard outside an opera house. This sort of unified concept would culminate in Jerome Kern's "Show Boat" and it remains a truth today that the integration of plot and music - reminiscent of opera - is the true secret of successful and perennial musicals, whatever the current idiom. This collection also makes one appreciate the complete originality of the Hollywood film for actually going back to Baum's books, entrusting the songs, lyrics and music to Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg and Herbert Stothart and scrapping the musical's colourful but checkered history (except for casting ex-vaudevillians as the main characters, of course!). Highly recommended for its nostalgia value, its irreplaceable rarities and a better understanding of the history of American popular music.

5 out of 5 stars A long overdue revisit to a classic American musical.......2003-09-30

Although it was one of the most financially successful stage musicals of the early 1900's, very little information is presently available on the 1903 production of THE WIZARD OF OZ. In what was obviously a labor of love, David Maxine has done much to correct this oversight by releasing a 2-CD set with over 145 minutes worth of extremely rare recordings of music from this and other OZ-themed musicals dating back to before World War I. Recorded materials include vintage acoustical disc and cylinder phonograph records, piano rolls, and music box discs, many of which go back almost a century. In addition, he has included two booklets worth of historical background information on the 1903 WIZARD OF OZ production, its stars, the individual musical numbers, and lyrics for the songs included on the CDs. (Lavishly illustrated with rare old black and white photos and artwork, these booklets, and the information they contain, are themselves worth the price of the set!) Several bonus CD tracks are included that offer rare recordings by Montgomery & Stone (the original Tin Woodsman and Scarecrow) and Bessie Wynn, who was also in the 1903 cast. Not just for dedicated Oz fans, this set is a "must have" for anyone interested in the history of American musical theater and American popular culture of the early 1900's.

5 out of 5 stars Long-Forgotten Broadway Hit Gets First Rate Revival.......2003-09-17

One hundred and three years ago, author L. Frank Baum published the best-selling children's book of the 20th century, THE WIZARD OF OZ. Although the book was adapted several times as plays, silent motion pictures, animated cartoons, and radio shows in the next few decades, it is the 1939 MGM film that most people think of as THE WIZARD OF OZ. The success and popularity of that film completely eclipsed the memories of previous incarnations and even the book itself in popular culture. However, prior to the film's release, there was a successful stage version which premiered on Broadway in 1903 and delighted audiences for many years, making stars of Fred Stone and David Montgomery, the original Scarecrow and Tinman. As with the MGM film, chilren who saw THE WIZARD OF OZ on stage carried fond memories of the production into adulthood. Ray Bolger was so impressed with the Fred Stone's Scarecrow, that he remembered it vividly as an adult and based his own protrayal of the character in the movie on Mr. Stone's stage version.

Unfortunately, time and Judy Garland have pushed the once popular Broadway Smash into history. It has been all but forgotten...until now.

As the show moved from theater to theater and casts changed, so did the songs. Many of these were recorded on the primative equipment of the day: Wax cylinders, 78-RPM records, piano rolls, and music Boxes, and surprisingly many of these still exist. Now, thanks to those hard-working gents at HUNGRY TIGER PRESS, you can own these historic recordings on this awesome 2-CD set. THE WIZARD OF OZ: Vintage Recordings From The 1903 Broadway Musical contains over 145 minutes of terrific early 20th century music. You won't find "Over the Rainbow" or "Ding! Dong! The Witch Is Dead!" here. Instead, this WIZARD OF OZ contains tracks like "Budweiser's a Friend of Mine", "Sammy", "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay", and "Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King", each one a portal over the rainbow to the Broadway stage of a century ago.

Obviously the play was quite different in plot from the movie--Dorothy travelled to Oz with her cow Imogene instead of Toto, for starters--, but the songs represent the style of popular music of 100 years ago and are collected here in a beautiful compilation. The set contains two booklets of liner notes which contain credits, lyrics, a written history of the production, and are extensively illustrated with photos and illustrations. Although the sound quality of the source material is not always up to today's standards, the songs are presented in the best versions possible, and the music is highly enjoyable. With 60 tracks and the wealth of information contained here, both written and photographic, this 2-CD set is good value for the money. A must-have for all collectors of WIZARD OF OZ memorabilia, an insightful look at popular music and Broadway history from a century ago, a glimpse into ethnic and racial stereotypes that were accepted at the time, and a curiosity for fans of the 1939 film, this set is big on appeal. Kudos to the Hungry Tiger Press for rescuing this treasure trove of musical history from obscurity!

5 out of 5 stars navarro without the addiction .......2006-06-27

dave navarro the guitarist for jane's addiction and a short replacement in R.H.C.P for their 1995 under-rated classic "one hot minute"

now i've very weary of solo albums from members of famous bands.
one because usually it's just half baked left material from the scrap heap of their previous bands work remaked to sound inoavitive and creative
2.usually just because their face is on thecover is going to sell millions and become an classic.

well this my friends is neither.
this is an vistionary delicacy with a post grunge sound I.E soundgarden. with acoustic ditty's aswell which dave pulls out marvellously
this album also features an cover an a velvet underground song
    "venus in furs"

not to be compared with jane's addiction this is a whole new kettle of fish..

    3 out of 5 stars good, but . . ........2004-05-17

if you're looking for an amazing record from this amazing guitarist, you are going to be disappointed. The first two tracks (and singles) are really good songs. They rock, they move, they inspire. After that, the album seems to melt into one big entity. None of the other songs are as cool, and some suck (not for nothing). My opinion of this album is that it is worth listening too if you're a fan of any of his bands. You may like it, you may hate it. I love Jane's, so I bought it, used, and I don't regret the purchase. When you're feeling depressed and self-absorbed, this is a good record to wallow in.

    5 out of 5 stars incredibly good........2004-04-12

This CD is absolutely great, its definetly different from what Navarro does in janes and the chilli peppers, but thats fine. This CD focuses on his singing/lyrics. Each track is done with care, and tho many people think they sound the same, i think each one has its own unique sound. If you compare Mourning Son, and Not for nothing you'll really understand waht i mean. Not for nothing is very fast paced and reminds me of a nine inch nails remix. Mourning son on the other hand is very calm, and the way all hte sounds are layered together is just astounding. This CD is really worth your time, and if you are a navarro fan, give this one a chance. Don't expect those blazing solos and new funky guitar riffs, instead expect something thats more vocal, and something that is very very musical.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Navarro - Trust No One.......2001-08-17

Instead of describing the album, i'll give you a few adjectives: quick on the uptake, pure quality, up to snuff, all there, on the ball, scintillating, glorious, dazzling, splendid, splendiferous, magnificent, marvellous, palatable, recherché, sensational, stupendous, superb, undefiled, in a class by oneself... NUFF SAID?

On Switchblade's Fourth Album, the Swedish Three-piece Evokes a Monolithic Sludgy Aura with a Sound which is Shimmering with Harsh Resonance. What Draws These Two Numbered, Yet Nameless Tracks Together is a Shared Sense of Deconstructed Momentum and a Oppressive, Crushing Heaviness which is Nonetheless Executed with a Certain Degree of Melodic Decorum and Manages to Somehow Be Graceful in It's Sloth.
