Soft Machine was the jazziest of England's progressive rock bands of the late-'60s, and this 1970 collection album was its expansive masterpiece. It was also one of the hippie era's ultimate jam records, with four songs on its two records. The Soft Machine that opened for Jimi Hendrix's 1968 tour was a trio, but Third brought in five more pieces, including horns and a violin. Keyboardist Mike Ratledge's nicely arranged "Slightly All the Time" featured strong horn lines and terrific percussion from drummer Robert Wyatt. Wyatt's wry way with a vocal and lyrics animate the more rock- like "Moon in June." (Wyatt, who later became paralyzed below the waist in an accident, still releases well-regarded singer-songwriter records.) One suspects that this music was cooked up under the spell of trumpeter Miles Davis' seminal 1969 albums, In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew. The vital result was a record that speaks of its time, but that's also aged remarkably well. --John Milward

RBF going back to what they are great at.......2007-07-23

First off, I have been a RBF fan since my high school days (late 90s) and still love them -- so take this review for what its worth. Also I am not a music expert, just someone who appreciates ska & RBF.

RBF comes back with a really solid SKA cd that reminds me why I love these guys. Most of the songs are good with a few that I didn't care for (Cannibal, Party Down, & Everybody's Drunk).

The good ones are the traditional fun-loving, happy-go-lucky, ska/rock that RBF is known for. I'd put "Another F.U. Song", "My Imaginary Friend", & "Why do all Girls Think they're Fat" in this category. Really good songs; very happy, lots of horns, things that RBF do well.

In my opinion, RBFs' true talent can be heard in songs like "Slow Down", "Will the Revolution Come", "Way Back", & "Another Day in Paradise". They are just really great, what I would call, "traditional" ska songs with much less rock/punk influence (if that makes any sense). I always come back to RBF after every new release because of their ability to create excellent ska music. After hearing "A Little Doubt Goes a Long Way" on their previous release, I hoped this next album would sound more like that. In my opinion there wasn't enough "traditional ska" which is why it only got a 4 out of 5 stars.

So after all that, this is a really good cd & definitely worth your money. If you are a RBF fan, buy it. If you are new to ska/RBF - get Turn the Radio Off first. After you hear that one, you'll be hooked & end up buying this cd anyway...that is in addition to all their other ones (with the possible exception of Cheer Up).

I haven't followed this band very hard so I didn't really notice the gaps between albums, and I doubt this one is going to replace Cheer Up in my sporadic rotation, it doesn't party as hard, but it's refreshing to hear something new from these guys that I can actually get into. The one thing this album does have in common with We're Not Happy Til You're Not Happy is that the title is the best thing about it, although a lot of kids might not recognize the absurd Dire Straits reference.
The chord progressions are often bland, the guitar tone is too bassy and lacking in gain, the riffs never really rock and the melodies rarely pop as much as they could, but it's hooky enough most of the time with the funny lyrics and energetic vocals picking up the slack, and the band are at their best on the slower reggaeish tracks Slow Down and Will The Revolution Come and the guitar soloing outro to the album which is reminiscent of the outro jam on Why Do They Rock So Hard. The only dud tracks for me are Live Your Dream and Everybody's Drunk.
The bonus DVD, which was a purchasing incentive for me, is 20 minutes of footage of the band in the studio which I found pretty disappointing.
I'd probably rather watch a sitcom Aaron wrote than listen to his songwriting at this point but I do rank this as one of the top 20 albums of the year so far.

They Just Came To Party Down.......2007-07-13

Reel Big Fish couldn't have picked a better mission statement for new album "Monkeys for Nothin' and the Chimps for Free" than lead track "Party Down." In addition to boldly stating that "[Reel Big Fish] just came to party down," the hyperactive romp offers a smorgasbord of musical styles from disco to country to glam rock. Casual RBF fans may identify this diversity only with the band's practice of playing their many versions of "S.R." live, but it's really been a hallmark of their studio work since "Why Do They Rock So Hard."

This album's best moments continue in Reel Big Fish's tradition of mixing ska energy with other musical conventions and interesting arrangements, from "My Imaginary Friend" - which sounds like the theme song from a children's show about atheism - to "Please Don't Tell Her I Have A Girlfriend," where the band sounds like They Might Be Giants and Billy Joel teaming up to sing a sweet drinking sway about infidelity (from the cheater's point of view, of course). It's also hard not to crack a smile during the hair metal guitar solo on "Drunk Tonight" (And, if not during the solo, at least during the hilarious Twisted Sister breakdown). Album closer "Cannibal" is another standout, as Reel Big Fish unleashes their inner Oingo Boingo for about three-and-a-half minutes before launching into an epic heavy metal epilogue.

RBF has a strong contingent of fans who (for whatever reason) profess only to like the band's first two albums. These traditionalists will enjoy the more straightforward ska-punk of "Another F.U. Song," "Live Your Dream," and "The New Version of You," not to mention a cover of Phil Collins's "Another Day in Paradise," danceable tracks that hearken back to the band's roots in the 1990s ska explosion.

Though the mood on this CD is lighter than other RBF efforts, lead singer Aaron Barrett still exudes some of his trademark pessimism. Not only does he ponder life in a godless universe, but he also notes in "Will the Revolution Come?" that "each generation's mess is bigger than the one before them has made."

MFNATCFF also includes re-recordings of old songs reaching as far back as "Everything Sucks," and even a pre-"Everything Sucks" demo. "Hate You," "Call You," "I'm Her Man," and "'Til I Hit The Ground" all sound ten times better on this disc, aided largely by the addition of Scott Klopfestein's excellent backing vocals, which have been one of RBF's best features since "Turn the Radio Off." It doesn't hurt that they've been re-recorded on such a clean-sounding album, which is a refreshing change from "We're Not Happy...," a disc whose vocals could have been recorded in a port-a-potty using an iBook's onboard microphone. Highly recommended!

It's a good time.......2007-07-13

This album is nothing less of a good, fun, energetic ska album. However, it's barely more. The new songs that were written for this album are fun to sing along to and make us longtime Reel Big Fish fans happy because of the abundance of upstrokes and horns, but after a few listens, the songs start to get boring. When I first heard this album, I was putting it right up there with Why Do They Rock So Hard? and Turn the Radio Off, but then a week or two later I started to realize how generic some of these songs are.

However, in the end this album is saved by the last few tracks which include mostly re-recorded songs off of Everything Sucks, and they sound amazing, and completely original because they were written when Reel Big Fish hadn't run out of material to write about. But don't take this review and my negativity the wrong way. It's a very good album, and there are some amazing songs on here, re-recorded and new, but it's apparent how little time they spent on it which was said to be just around a few months.

Overall, I loved to see that Reel Big Fish has made a full return to their ska roots, and the only thing this album is short of is just a pinch of originality and it'd be a 5 star album no doubt. Definitely check this one out!

There's more to this Long Beach, California, trio's debut, released shortly after Nowell's death in 1996, than white suburban punks imitating Jamaican ska music. The band comes up with great songs, notably the catchy MTV hit "What I Got"; spooky dub-reggae undertones, produced by the Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary, to go with the snappy horns; and surprisingly progressive lyrics that attack sexism and other social ills, especially on "Wrong Way." Like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone, obvious forebears, Sublime become slightly tiresome after 17 songs, but the band is great in short doses. --Steve Knopper

I'll be honest, I've never thought sublime was all that talented. That being said, this album is still listenable. A few of the songs are mindless, stoner songs, while others provide a great deal of humor.

If you're a stoner, you'll love this, if not you'll probably wonder why it's so popular.

Good, but It's pretty overrated.......2007-07-17

Call me a closeminded person (do that, you suck), but to be honest, this album just isn't very compelling all the time. I thought it pales in comparison with their amazing debut, it has less energy, the hooks just aren't as great (too many boring pop hooks that lose their appeal quickly), it dosen't do much for me. Sublime has quite a bit of filler, it's kind of sad.

Despite the hyperbole, Sublime still is a good album, just overrated. Nothing especially horrible (besides the pointless Ballad of Johnny Butt and the bland Get Ready), just the songs miss the mark. IT also has most of their hits, and those songs lost their originaltly for me a long time ago (though they aren't fully outplayed, but What I Got was never great). I didn't think the music wasn't as complelling, the feel good alternantive that made 40 Oz. To Freedom a joy to listen is sorely lacking in Sublime. The music just isn't as memorable.

On the plus side, the songs aren't horrible, and Bradely Nowell's voice was significantly better, and he can really sing. His singing is best on this album.

Basically, my review was short, but I'm kind of out of things to say, guess that's my point. Now please click not helpful votes and bring down my ranking (ranking is pointless and stupid).

Steve Knoppe is a moron. To begin with, I don't think any real Sublime fan would refer to Bradley Nowell as a "frat boy". "Imitating Jamaican ska music"???? Yea, I don't see how there's "more to this Long Beach, California trio" than that, because that's not what they're doing at all. And wow bro, you really must've gone through this cd heavily if you were able to pick out Wrong Way and What I got! I actually never caught those before, I was too busy listening to the songs everyone in the world knows like Seed and Burritos. "Sublime become slightly tiresome after 17 songs, but the band is great in short doses"... dude, your review became tiresome the second I realized you didn't know what you were talking about.. which was pretty quickly. Who gets tired of Sublime or listens to them in short doses??? This CD is a masterpiece. If you have a love for all differen't genres of music, you will be pleasently surprised with this album. Just like all three of their albums, Sublime brings together several types of genre's into one solid sound that is like nothing else ever put out. I can't promise you it will be your all-time favorite CD, but it will certainly catch on and be admired by anyone who has any decent musical taste. Buy this CD.

A classic slice of 90's ska punk.......2007-05-01

This album has been a favorite of mine for years, but it took me a while to realize how classic it was. Every single song on here is excellent. At first i bought the album for What i got, and that was all i listened to, but now after years of appreciating the whole thing i have come to a greater understanding of what sublime achieved with this album. What they achieved is a very diverse and well-crafted album that displays so many genuine emotions that at times it can make me a little overwhelmed. Nowell's singing can be incredibly soulful or aggressive. I would highly recommend this album to anyone who can appreciated great creative music. All the styles on 40oz are perfected here in more interesting ways. I love the guitar, the bass the drums the lyrics everything. Brad nowell found what he liked in music and then was able to combine it into very original tunes. Catchy, sexy, rowdy, depressed. the emotions are depicted so clearly i really can identify with the lyrics.

Smothered by the indulgence of his rock star ranking, Jack White steps into the eccentricities of the supergroup, and at first glance, this seems to be a band where White's imposing presence could overshadow the rest. Not the case with these Raconteurs. Teaming with fellow Detroit songwriter Brendan Benson and Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler, the rhythm section from Cincinnati band the Greenhornes, White exhales a bit, deferring enough to his mates to make Broken Boy Soldiers play like a team effort. Following the Benson blueprint, "Steady as She Goes," which opens as a slice of 1960's radio pop, the record steers away from pigeonholing the rest of the way. White's in a Middle Eastern mood for the title track as he pulls off a wicked Robert Plant howl, while Lawrence and Keeler excel on the chorus-strong "Intimate Secretary" and the optimistic acoustic rocker "Yellow Sun." Like so many all-star bands before them, The Raconteurs could be one and done. But don't place the blame on this fertile and genuine debut. --Scott Holter

The Raconteurs are a new band made up of old friends, consisting of Jack Lawrence (bass), Patrick Keeler (drums), Brendan Benson (guitars, vocals, keys) and Jack White(guitars, vocals, keys). The seed was sewn in an attic in the middle of a hot summer when friends Jack White and Brendan Benson got together and wrote a song that truly inspired them. This song was "Steady, As She Goes" and the inspiration led to the creation of a full band with the addition of Lawrence and Keeler. So many influences, so little time.......2007-07-24

The Raconteurs mesh together so many influences on their debut that it's easy to lose track of how many there are in a given song much less throughout the CD. Aside from the bands like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, whose influences you can hear everywhere, I even pick up bits from such divergent sounds as Queen, (A little "Keep Yourself Alive" riff in "Hands") and ELP (Opening organ on "Store Bought Bones") and they make it work for them. This is not a White side project (as if it could be with Benson's participation) but a fully realized band with a great sound. Hopefully, this is not a one shot deal and The Raconteurs continue to record. I would like to see them further develop this sound, leaning a bit less on the past and taking a few more chances.

Top Ten Stranded on an Island Albums.......2007-06-22

Indie Rock's answer to a "Supergroup". Every track on the disc should be on the radio. The most underrated and unrecognized band of the year. The band has great chemistry and passion for what they do. Incredible Live act. If you love good music, buy this NOW!

I love artists who can make a new sound from old influences, and the Raconteurs deliver on this albumn. Some of the guitar work sounds like it's straight out of the sixties, yet the songs sit comfortably among other contemporary alt-rock projects. Check this one out.

I'd heard a song or two on the radio while traveling and thought I'd give the cd a go. Fabulous! Truly these musicians enjoy what they do and each others company. Only through genuine collaboration could such a creation happen. They had me from the first song to the last. The style is definately not that of amateurs. Well produced but not to the point that it sounds plastic. In fact one thing I love the most is how they have retained a slight raw edge that was quite refreshing. I hear influences of the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin but with completely fresh insight and I only hope they keep it up so I can add more to my music collection!
In my opinion, not just one or two songs but, all of them are good!

If I had to take but one CD to an island..........2007-06-12

This would be the CD. Not only does it rock, but it just makes you want to go to the beach and chill. My favorite tracks are "Waiting For My Ruca", "40 oz. To Freedom" and "We're Only Gonna Die For Our Arrogance" (Bad Religion cover).

Sublime was one of the greatest bands of the ninties, if not the greatest ska band of all time.

Truly fantastic, timeless music.......2007-05-19

What an album!! An awesome debut from an explosive (and extremely short lived) band. This album stands the test of time. Regardless what time of the year it is when this cd comes to play my mood is instantly lifted. One of those rare albums where you don't pick and choose songs. You listen from front to back each time.

The variety of music from all out punk, to ska/reggae is fun and all are technically good. Bud and Eric keep the beat going and Brad (RIP!) comes through with some tasty riffs. When I purchased this album I was in grammar school and Sublime was just starting to get on the air. This is my benchmark album to this day. Honestly, I am huge fan of all their work and the self titled album is great. This album however just has soul. No other way to describe it. Be it cruising in my car or kicking back a couple of beers with my friends this album is often played and warmly receipted by everyone.

For anyone who does not own it or is on the fence; worry not. This album is great. I would go through my personal favorites on the album but, I think at some point and time nearly every song was my number one. Now over a decade later the songs I loved are still awesome and the songs I liked I love.

Talk about music.......2007-04-11

I can't ________ believe I waited so long to get this. I have liked Sublime, heard plenty of their songs, hits, and Date Rape, Smoke Two Joints and 40 Oz. To Freedom from this album. But these other songs are just as good. And I will admit, the lesser songs are actually better than thoss three songs (besides Date Rape).

Yeah, this is ________ music, and that's all. It has a lot for an album. Soul, rebellion, funkiness, rythem, alot. This is one of the best albums I have ever heard in a long time. Not as much as Bloodhound Gang, but this actually _________ exceeded my epectations (Cake failed bigtime).

There is not a bad song on this album, just a couple average songs and a crappy song. THe last track is kind of weak, New Trash more like noise (good thing it's only a minute long), and the Hope cover is _______ compared to the great song from The Descendants. Everything else gets two thumbs up.

OF course though, the musicans are what makes this band _______ awesome. Bud Gaugh's drumming plays second to Bradley Nowell in the music. Bradely Nowell is self explainitory, and his voice is awesome. He can actually sing. Eric has got to be one of the msot underrated bassist yet. Listen to his bass guitar on Date Rape.

If you don't have this album, check it out now. I just discovered it and I can't stop listening to it. Sorry, no new Bloodhound Gang either.

Uneven with hints at what's to come.......2007-04-02

A fun, but uneven album. I hear hints of the great work to come on the self-titled album. Ruby Begonias is probably my highlight here. I really admire what Bradley could do when he was on his game, but I find things a little too rough for my tastes on most of this album.

Perfect CD.......2007-01-23

40 Oz. To Freedom is deftinely perfect. This is the best CD I own and I play it all the time. I am gonna keep it short here because I don't feel like typing a big reviw, but this is just amazing. Kicks off with the low Waiting For My Ruca which is abosulely great and dosen't slack off with hit songs like 40 Oz. To Freedom and Smoke Two Joints following up. Sublime just puts out amazing track after amazing track with songs like Don't Push, Date Rape, Scarlet Begonias, D.J.s, and Right Back just to name a few. Recomnedded to anyone.

The Book of Genesis tells us that God created "the evening and the morning" on the third day. Great...even if you already have everything else!.......2007-07-23

I have most of Third Day's other CDs and DVDs but I still bought this CD/DVD even though I already have most of the songs included here. I love the songs so much that the alternate arrangements or live versions give me a chance to appreciate the songs all over again.

I would say that THIS is the CD to introduce other folks to Third Day...but I could say that about all the other ones I've listened to since starting with "Come Together" a few years back.

They're also a fantastic band to see live if you get the chance!

I have all their old CDs so there was no epiphany for me on hearding this new collection, but it's a solid assortment of past hits that can't be faulted.

The video DVD alone is worth the purchase price for the 2-disk set. Seeing the band evolve from their jumpy-punk early videos to GMA spots then on to smooth recent stuff is priceless! Cry out to Jesus still makes me cry.

Third Day At Their Best.......2007-07-12

To all Third Day fans, this CD is a must have. It is not just the original songs placed on one CD and re-released, but the guys have gone to the trouble of re-recording all the tracks on this CD. And it's an awesome result.

The DVD that comes with the CD is also good value. You get to see the guys in their element, just worshipping God with out any inhibitions.

If you love Third Day's music then you will not be disappointed with this venture. I highly recommend you buy this CD.

Let me start off by saying Third Day's Cronology volume 1 is a fantastic dc/dvd! You are definately getting you're money's worth! Not only are you getting an audio cd packed with hitsongs, rarities, and live performances, you're also gonna a dvd full of realy neat stuff! I'd like to tell you a little about the cd first. The audio portian of this package contains 18 tracks, most of whitch are not available elswhere. You get remixes of songs from the band's debut album simply entitled "Third Day" as well as a newly recorded verssion of"Thief" You get stuff from their 2nd 3rd, and 4th albums, as well as previously unreleased live performances of "Black Bird" and "Alien" There's also a newly recorded verssion of "My Hope is You" But wait there's more! You also get tracks from a rare 1999 ep. Still not convinced this a bargin? The dvd features early videos, live performances, and bootleg videos from the early 90s before Third Day was signed to a record deal. But I'm not quite finished yet! There's also audio commentary from the band durring the early videos and the bootlegs. So there you have it! everything that comes in this wonderful package. I think that Chronology vol 1 is an outstanding retrospective on Third Day's early, as well as an absolute bargin for the price even if you pay fullprice. Trust me you're getting your $'s worth. If you are a Third Day fan this cd/dvd combo is a MUST HAVE!!! It has some great history about the band and you can watch how they have all grown up together. God has tremendously blessed them, because they have all been faithful to Him. I have really enjoyed this collection.

Anybody who owns the first two Shrek soundtracks knows that ogres inspire not only charming films but great music--last time out, Pete Yorn, Counting Crows, and Joseph Arthur left monster-sized impressions, and the original movie let loose a masterful rendition of "Hallelujah" by a still-under-the-radar Rufus Wainwright. This go-round the proceedings are playful but backward-looking: Fergie's freewheeling take on the Heart standby "Barracuda" leavens Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle," and Wolfmother's guitar-heavy "Joker and the Thief" stands up straighter than classic rock fans might like alongside Led Zeppelin's classic "Immigrant Song." Eels returns, this time with two doleful but sweet selections, and Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas again cut up (but still manage to carry off) a classic: Here, Sly & the Family Stone's "Thank You (Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Again)" gives up the funk and the fun. The court will be split on a certain actor's absence from the disc; King Arthur, played by Justin Timberlake, might have done a mean cover of Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin." Not As Good As The First 2 CD's.......2007-07-11

The CD is good, but in my opinion, it's not as good as the first 2 Shrek movie CD's.

The soundtrack to Shrek the third, like it's predecessors, features a diverse array of artists. While not as good as the first (which was brilliant - by the way, to the other reviewer, it DID have Rufus Wainwright singing "Hallelujah" on it, I have the cd), this is still very good. Having not seen the movie yet (so I don't know what was omitted), and having already owned "9 crimes" by Damien Rice (on his "9" album) whose omission bothered most, I'm writing my review based on the music on the cd.

Appearing again (he's been on all 3 soundtracks) is Eels, opening with the upbeat "Royal pain", and appearing again the sunny but merlancholic "Losing streak".

Black Eyed Pea Fergie does a chugging version of the Heart rocker "Barracuda". "Best days" by Matt White is sunny and upbeat, the choppy rocker "Joker and the thief" by Wolfmother (with wailing vocals), the jangly, midtempo "Other ways" by Trevor Hall (great voice), and "What I gotta do" is a soulful ballad by Macy Gray (also featured on her superb new CD "Big").

We get the singing donkey again, Eddie Murphy (with Antonio Banderas), on a remake of the funky Sly & The Family Stone hit "Thank You (Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Again)". "Final showdown" is a showtune like piano ballad by Maya Rudolph and Rupert Everett, and "Charming's plan" is a sweeping cinematic instrumental by Harry Greggson-Williams.

Some oldies show up; "Immigrant song" by Led Zeppelin, "Live & let die" by Wings, "Do You Remember Rock 'N' Roll Radio?" by The Ramones, and the lovely "Cats in the cradle" by Harry Chapin.

Good, 4 and a half stars really!

This is not so much a review, but a message to the folks who compiled this soundtrack. After seeing the movie, the song I most wanted was the Damien Rice song 9 Crimes. Why on earth was it left off of the CD? I wouldn't have even known what the song was if it weren't for other reviewers, whom I would like to thank for the information about the song and for saving me the money. I will purchase the Damien Rice CD, but I will not purchase this soundtrack, at least not at full price. I'll wait until I find it in the cheap bin at the local record shop.

Though they've suffered death, departure and fraught internal and external relationships, No Doubt have kept faith with fun throughout, as The Singles very clearly proves. As their troubles have made them far from prolific, it's culled almost entirely from three albums--Return of Saturn, Rock Steady and their mega-hit Tragic Kingdom--with just the quirky, warped ska of "Trapped in a Box" to represent their eponymously titled major label debut.

As said, it's excellent fun, from the opening power anthem "Just a Girl", through the ultra-modern, Madonna-like "Hey Baby" and the urgent, melodious power pop of "Excuse Me Mr" to the Chicago-style break-up ballad "Don't Speak". It's easy to see how this colourful band of Anaheim skanksters came to be seen as an energising antidote to the crushing male miserabilism of grunge. There are a few extras; a reverent cover of Talk Talk's "It's My Life", a dance-metal "Hey Baby" remix and a live repeat of the cute, Leonard Cohen-quoting "Underneath It All", featuring Gwen Stefani's vocal and a simple acoustic guitar. But, naturally, it's the hits that count and they're all here, every bouncing, beaming one of them. It's a fine testament to one of America's most enduring pop acts. --Dominic Wills

First, let me start off by saying that this is an unbiased review. I'm not a fan of the band nor do I dislike the band. I'm a fan of all types of music. I also won't be comparing this album to any other albums from the band. This review will be strictly on this particular album. Now onto the review.

No Doubt fans will undoubtedly be thrilled to own a compilation of their favorite band's hits all on one album. Casual fans will want to partake so that they can own an album that contains mostly recognizable and loveable hits from the group.

So what's to like about this album? As I said above, casual fans will recognize 80% of the songs on this album. The only songs that I didn't know were "Sunday Morning" (my new favorite track from the band), "New", "Excuse Me Mr.", "Spiderwebs", and "Trapped In a Box". Fans of older No Doubt songs will be content with "Just A Girl", "Bathwater", and "Ex-Girlfriend". Fans of newer No Doubt songs will be entertained by "Hey Baby", "Hella Good", and the newest song on this album "It's My Life". There's also ton of different kinds of music to choose from. From reggae-influenced "Sunday Morning" to the more electronic sounding "Hey Baby" to the classic No Doubt sound (it's all about the guitars, baby!) in "Excuse Me Mr." to the ballads like "Don't Speak", this album is sure to please everybody!

Lyric-wise, this album has everything! You have songs about breakups and seperations. And you have songs about being "Just A Girl" and songs that make you just want to get up and dance. Vocal-wise, I prefer the older No Doubt songs to the newer ones. Gwen's voice is perfect for its genre.

Furthermore, the songs aren't in any particular order so if you listen to the album straight through, you get an eclectic mix of old and new songs.

And what's not to like? Honestly, nothing. I love every song on this album although I have to be in a certain mood to listen to the newer songs.

My rating: 5/5 stars. There's a ton of entertainment on this album. Whether you're a fan of the band's music or you just like great music in general, this album is a must have for your CD collection. It's one of the first CDs I pull out when I want a mix of everything. You won't know how much you want this CD until you have it in your hands!

Excuse me, Excuse me Mr.......2007-05-14

The rapid fire second punch that gave the audience no chance to breathe after the opening number on most of the Tragic Kingdom shows, this song went from closer to opener in the setlist before comfortably settling into the second spot right after "Tragic Kingdom". Originally the song had been played at the end of the show with Gwen's call and response of "Excuse me... excuse me mister", and "I'm in line too", the band would play as quiet as a whisper until Gwen screamed "F--- YOU MISTER!!!" where the boys would then fire up again and finish the song (and usually the show) out. It has been said that an original version was recorded that the band disliked, and when the last song for the album was penned (this being "Spiderwebs") the band insisted that they would record it if they were allowed to rerecord "Excuse Me Mr." the way they wanted. Not only did it become the version we all know, but those two songs ended up being the last recorded for Tragic Kingdom, and Gwen has called it the best recording experience the band has had. On a funny note, Tom said often that the lyrics were 'metaphorical' and 'cryptic', once even stating that Gwen's lyrics were written to sound like the song was written about a homeless person. Of course this isn't true. Or is it??? The song had been written for quite a while before it was released, as the band was playing it live in 1993 and even played an acoustic version of it on the radio show Loveline in June 1993.

This Greatest hits album by No Doubt has an excellent variety of all their top songs from previous albums. I give it 5 out of 5. A recommended buy if you are a No Doubt fan.

'EVEN THOUGH I KNOW THE JOURNEY'S LONG AND THE ROAD IS HARD, You're the One who's gone before me, You will help me carry on. And after all that I've been through, now I know the Truth, that I must go through the valley to stand upon the mountain of G-d.'

Yes, not very original lyrics, but to a christian, this long journey symbolizes life's troubles, the valley, the darkest, worst times or even then on the spiritual plane, just boring or lifeless. And G-d is always with us if we are true to Him in all aspects of our lives. This song has become my rallying cry.

At first I was extremely disappointed with the music, but I gradually warmed up to it, and now I can't stop playing it. The words from "Cry Out to Jesus" first spoke to me in my car one day, after having heard it several times, half listening to the words. The chorus, especially speaks of what Christ offers to everyone and what christianity as the body of Christ should offer to others: 'There is hope for the helpless, rest for the weary, love for the broken heart. There is grace and forgiveness, mercy and healing to meet you wherever you are. Cry out to Jesus' And with Jesus as our high priest, who suffered all things as written in Hebrews chapter 5, we should 'Just remember that you're not alone in your shame or your suffering' as one struggles with one's own sins.

I love too, "Communion", the lyrics of which consist of most of the few words which are spoken every Sunday, before communion. The song is very repetitive, but the few words which are semi-original, I love, and the way the song is arranged and sung is very simple but very beautiful: 'I will remember everything of old that You did for me. I won't take for granted the sacrifice that set me free. We hunger and thirst for You Lord, and Your Righteousness. We long for Your presence here Lord. Be with us again.' I love that song and the very obvious lyrics for the chorus: 'This is the body, this is the blood, broken and poured out, for all of us, and in this communion, we share in His love. This is the body, this is the blood.'

"Tunnel" which gets a lot of airplay on the radio reminds me of my dad's sister who was murdered who said much the same thing but in a different way. "It's always darkest before the dawn," she'd always say.

I do love this recording, but as usual I'm 2 years late; Third Day has a more recent CD out.

I am not a born again. I happened upon this group one day while channel surfing the radio stations. What a great album! If you like pop/rock music, why not listen to some with a positive message?

Third Day is capable of producing some high energy food stomping rock and roll as well as gut wrenching soul searching profound music. On this cd, they did neither. If music were a shotgun, they forgot to take the safety off. The band sounds like they are going through the motions. Ive listened to the disc a few times and there are no memorable guitar moments..something the band is known for. Mac Powell's voice sounds in good form, but the lyrics are far too predictable. There are many points on this disc where, even on your first listen, you hear a line and you can accurately predict the next one.
Some typical lyrics:
1) "There's a light at the end of this tunnel for you"
2) "I will soar with the wings of eagles, I will learn to fly high above this world"
3)"They've done all they can to make it right, still its not enough"
4) "Memory warns you of the past, when it all went wrong"
5) "After all that Ive been through, now I realize that I must go through the valley to stand upon the mountain of God"

Yes, these themes are things we need to remember from time to time, but we've heard all this thousands of times before. There is nothing wrong with presenting time tested and familiar themes, but it would help if a new angle was presented so perhaps we could see a truth in a way that is more eye opening than we are used to. These lyrics are just too generic to be eye opening. Im sure these songs have brought comfort to some who have needed it, and for that the band deserves some credit. But this disc certainly wont be remembered as a creative milestone.

Third Day continues to be one of the best bands of any genre. This album is not only musically fantastic, but it's message is so uplifting. It is a great gift for someone who has been going through a rough time, or a great addition to any CD collection!

No Doubt deservedly hit it big when they released Tragic Kingdom. Their upbeat ska, punk, and rock influenced music stood out among the post-grunge crowd. There are several radio hits here, and the album has a lot more to offer. It's definitely a CD that is worth a spin if you like what you've heard of them before. A classic 90s album!

One excellent Ska album.......2006-11-09

No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom is really a great album and worth your money. Literally every track on it is well done. In my opinion its the last good No Doubt album. My personal favorite song is The Climb, mainly because its written in 12/8 as opposed to 4/4 time, like most popular music. Unfortunately, every other song on the album is 4/4, but it is something of a treat to hear something different. This album is really good all around and everyone can like at least one track on this album.

This is the best album No Doubt has ever made. I still remember in 1996 when don't speak was No.1 for long weeks. I thunk this song is the best No doubt has ever made. A performance deserving a standing ovation. The rate lies down:

1. Spiderwebs. A great intro. This song is what defines No Doubt style to my opinion. I love this one. 10/10

2. Excuse me mr. I don't like this song that much. I think ''Sixteen'' should have been released as a single instead of this one. The lyrics, don't make much sense, but the piano sounds good. 6/10

3. Just a Girl. A very nice song about teenager girls. The guitar sounds great. 10/10

4. Happy Now? This song sounds good. I like it.9/10

5. Different People. Nice intro. The rest, isn't that bad. 8/10

6. Hey You. The first time I saw this song title, before I listened to it, I thought It was a remake of Pink Floyd's. This song is the strongest one. It's just rock. Doesn't have any reggae, pop or ska rythm. One of my favourites. 10/10

7. The Climb. It didn't have to take much time. This song is the boring slow one. Is actualy quiet good, but is the longest one, and it wasn't necessary at all. Up to 6 minutes!! 8/10

8. Sixteen. One of my favourites. One of the best rock songs No Doubt has ever made. It had been released as a single and I bet it would have reached the number one for weeks! Starts great, is the song that makes you stand up and jump. I was 16, and I felt like this song was to me. I felt identified with it.''You're only sixteen and you're feeling old...'' And it ends when Sunday Morning starts, with the drums. 10/10

9. Sunday Morning. I love how the song sounds, it's geat! but the lyrics doesn't help that much. But I don't care, I like it! One of my favourites. 10/10

10. Don't Speak. I have no words to describe this song. The lyrics, the sound, everything on this song is great! I think this is the best No Doubt song on their 5 studio albums!
A strong ballad. ''As we die, both you and I, with my head in my hands I sit and cry...''.10/10

11. You can do it. Doesn't sound that good. This song shouldn't have been included on this album. Is just the worst. I don't like it. 3/10

12. A very nice song. ''We gotta fing another way to make the world go 'round.'' The lyrics are great. Is just about rality. I love this song. 10/10

13. End it on this. A good one. Not that bad. 9/10

14. Tragic Kingdom. This song is like the cherry on the cake. I like the intro when it says "Permanecer sentados por favor" in Spanish. Welcome to the Tragic Kingdom! 10/10

Be sure you pick a copy of this album up. This album is No Doubt's best ever.

You can't go wrong with this CD. It's just fun! Gwen's voice, the lyrics, the music is all good stuff!

Great New Wave/Ska Revival.......2006-07-10

I listened to this for the first time in a long time recently and was pleasantly surprised at how good it sounds.

This is the ultimate No Doubt album - terrific sound of ska/new wave/pop. Listening to this album again during our present penchant for 80's revival made me realize that "Tragic Kingdom" was about 10 years ahead of it's time.

"Spiderwebs", "Excuse Me Mr", "Just A Girl", "Sunday Morning" and "Don't Speak" are all great singles.

Hopefully this band will truly return to their great roots and return to this fine form in the near future...I think it's the perfect time!

Great Collection..........2007-07-11

If you are a devote 3EB fan, you probably have all the songs in the collection - all three CDs & some demos - therefore, this CD is not for you! The liner notes are the biggest extra on the CD, but are not worth much as an extra...

On the other hand, for those who like the band but hadn't followed too closely, or do not know where to download the songs unavailable on the group's CDs - this is a perfect collection & very recommended.

Finally a compilation.......2007-06-27

If you're like me and always liked one or two songs from every CD this band has released, then you will be pleased to see this compilation exists. All the hits, all in one place, all for a fairly cheap price. Gotta love it.

Did not disappoint........2007-05-12

As a loyal fan from the beginning, I am proud to say that this collection of songs did not disappoint. However, I would have liked the track "Faster" from their 3rd album to be included. Their music is phenonmenal and this collection is only a glimpse of who they are. I would highly recommend getting all 3 albums.

Three hard-to-find tracks.......2007-03-22

There are exactly three reasons to own this album:

1. Tattoo of the Sun, previously only available with one of their singles. An excellent song that should have been on an album years ago.
2. Slow Motion, with the lyrics, which anyone in the US missed out on. This alone is worth the price. Along with Motorcycle Drive By (also on this album), Slow Motion is Third Eye Blind at their best.
3. My Time in Exile, which is said to be on the DVD release of Out of Vein. Also an excellent track.

Even if you own every other Third Eye Blind album, it's worth it to pick up this one for these songs alone.

Is anyone else surprised that there are 19 songs on this hits collection? If you can name 6 songs or more that were released during Third Eye Blind's fifteen minutes of fame, then you can't go wrong picking this up. I must admit that the songs I'm not familiar with are just as good as their commercial stuff. Although, if you're among the many that can't name 6 songs, you can hear "Semi-Charmed Life" on the radio everyday.
