Strange We Should Meet Here

Strange We Should Meet Here

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Jarring and aggressive yet beautiful and melodic, Strange We Should Meet Here marks the debut album from Idiot Pilot, written, performed and produced by 18-year-olds Daniel Anderson and Michael Harris. Mixing electronica, post-hardcore and contemporary pop, the result is a potent, propulsive and powerfully original musical statement. A juxtaposition of emotionally charged music and the cold logic of electronic sounds, Strange We Should Meet Here heralds the arrival of one of today ’s most promising young bands.

this album is beyond it's time. mr. juarez, rhode island - did you actually listen to the album? you're probably a my chemical romance fan. when a lot of bands in the future are running the whole laptop rock setup for lack of a btter phrase - strange we should meet here will be looked at as the album that started it all. the vocals are great as is the music and it's only THEIR FIRST ALBUM that they recorded as teenagers - they can only go up from here - most bands don't even get to this level. they have fans from sigur ros, to mogwai, to the cure - people that know and make great music - just wait and see what happens with them - this is a great start to what will hopefully be a great career. just open your ears and mind and listen - the laziest thing a journalist can do is compare a new thing to something else. be better - and write something worthwhile. you also gave the godsmack and taking back sunday albums flawless reviews - yikes! you like crap! please never review an album that is actually good ever again

4 out of 5 stars Originality being their strongest suit........2005-12-17

I have a bad habit of biting into a big pile of music made for 18 year olds, but this is music made BY 18 year olds and yet I question if it is FOR 18 year olds or not. The singing voice is startlingly mature and although the Radiohead comparison's are not exactly correct, I can admit that this is not miles away from them altogether--though that whole thought process is more about looking to the future of what this band could acheive in their lifetime with such a hell of a start. Actually the electronics ARE similar to stuff like Radiohead and The Postal Service, but these boys are clearly not the seasoned writers that those groups are. Esentially this singing voice i'm speaking of is too sterile to compete--it calls to mind Dredge at their best although Dredge SUCKS BIGTIME and yet Idiot Pilot should undoubtably age well on most ears. That having been said, my main qualm with Idiot Pilot is the screaming--he screams EXACTLY like A Static Lullaby (who were clearly crafted to be forgotten in a huge sea of similar yet better groups). The music however, I would classify as entirly flawless. All areas of improvement for this band can be capsulated in the vocals and the identity of this band collectivly. They seem to want to appeal to fans of the Blood Brothers and Neon Blonde, but they are missing one key ingredient which is a secure sense of identity. This problem is shown in their CD cover graphics which to me bring to mind cliche's ranging from Poison The Well to even Nickelback (sepia photo-quality decayed texture everywhere and a big tree in the middle--which is way overdone). Thankfully the sound does not follow that vibe (which was actually a cool vibe a few years ago). Personally, I think that this band could change their cover art to include sarcasm, gets some lyrics like Blood Brothers (odd image pairing with quirky ambiguity and an odd pop-art sensibility), and change the screaming style and I would give them a 15 out of 5, but as it stands I am trapped between a Neon Blonde comparison and a Muse comparison. In many ways this band is merely A Static Lullaby crossed with Muse, but with the potential to one day trully understand what makes a band like Blood Brothers endlessly vital. Peace out, nerds!

5 out of 5 stars Original and Beautiful.......2005-11-20

I would say this is the best CD i've ever bought. The best way to enjoy it is to listen to it a few undred times then see them in concert. Live they are the best show you will ever see. I saw them at the Seattle EMP, I thought this was going to be a tiny little show, no, thousands of people wanted in and where getting turned away. This band is beautiful, please take the time to enjoy the CD and try to grow musically beyond the screaming. The thought of this new genre is amazing. Enjoy the CD

Idiot Pilot's deput LP, Strange We Should Meet Here, takes a bunch of musical genres that are usually entirely separate and fuses them into a moving, interesting sound. Predictablly, those who dislike screaming may not enjoy Idiot Pilot- yes, there are some backround screaming vocals, but they only enhance the music, not degrade it. (of course, if you cannot tolerate screaming in general you won't enjoy all the songs on this album.) One of the great things about Idiot Pilot is the way they weave the vocals, which is very refreshing. The singer does sound like Thom Yorke- but who doesn't these days? They mix post-hardcore with electronica and alternative and create something that sounds unique. And there is little unique music out there right now.
Tracks Open Register, To Buy A Gun, Strange We Should Meet Here, and A Light At the End of the Tunnel are my favorites.

It's amazing what two 18-year-olds can do. This record shows great musical craftsmanship and composition skills. But also they add a twist with their hardcore tendencies. If you don't mind a little screaming you should check it out. The screaming works better sometimes than others. Sometimes it may seem misplaced.

You may hear lots of Radiohead comparisons, but these guys are very original. And I know my Radiohead. There may be some Radiohead influence, but this is radically different than Kid A. They occaisonally tend to mess around sonically, but that just makes it more amusing (check out the rap part on "militance prom").

"Strange We Should Meet Here" is a remarkable debut. This album has some spectacular moments. Idiot Pilot is still fairly immature, but they have enormous potential. They still seem relatively unknown despite being on a major record label. Tell your friends. Idiot Pilot needs some recognition. They could be really big someday.
