Product Description
Import only version features a bonus 12-track disc of remixes by contempary artists and producers such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ladytron, The Rakes, The Dandy Warhols, producer du jour Paul Epworth, The Rakes, Amusment Parks on Fire, The Others, Faultline and more! Gang of Four are best described as being ''ahead of their time''. Usually it means nothing; mere hack hyperbole employed to describe the latest fledgling bunch of chancers. In Gang Of Four's case, it's a stone-cold empirical fact. So the time is right for a return of the great men themselves with a (sort of) new album. Return The Gift is a album that finds Go4 re-recording seminal tracks from 'Entertainment!', 'Solid Gold' and 'Songs Of The Free'. 25 tracks in all. V2. 2005.

1 out of 5 stars Warning ! This is not the original sound track !!.......2006-08-03

Bear in mind this is not the original Pink Panther sound track, even though they deceptively make it look as if it is. I purchased this CD specifically for the number Claudia Cardinale sings, but to my great disappointment her song is not included and they substitute the corny instrumental in it's place. I feel cheated, and believe they should make it clear that this CD may not contain the tracks one may be looking for...

5 out of 5 stars Like The Movie, Only Better.......2006-05-23

The Pink Panther became a "property" for Peter Sellers and many other writers and actors - and it's not hard to imagine how they came to dislike the many limitations of character and comic possibilities.

However, the first movie showed the most originality and life. And the same could be said for Henry Mancini's score. Before the Inspector becomes a complete buffoon, the storyline called for a great deal of sophistication, mystery and intrigue, and Mancini delivered it all and more.

There are many great tracks here, foremost of which was the theme itself. However, "Meglio Stasera" stands as a great hallmark of this mid-1960s era.

"If you're ever gonna kiss me - it had better be tonight."

Go - go - GO!

5 out of 5 stars Cool and Blissful Soundtrack.......2006-03-07

Henry Mancini's classic soundtrack to THE PINK PANTHER is very timely for the carefree period in which it was released and captures the feel of this film and those great times that still resonate in the mind. THE PINK PANTHER theme is an endearing and enduring melody that has become instantly identifiable with both the cartoon character and the film series. The soundtrack captures a lot of source music that was certainly in vogue and has captured that tantalizing cocktail jet set quality in the numerous compositions especially in IT HAD BETTER BE TONIGHT. The aplomb and easy nature of this recording is on target capturing the great feel of this film giving the listener the chance to relive the experience.

2 out of 5 stars Fran Jeffries Sang "It had Better be Tonight" in the film.......2004-10-07

Actually, that was Fran Jeffries who sang that version of "It Had Better be Tonight" in the film. She played the role of the "Greek" Cousin. Visit this link for an excellent biography and discography:

http://www.swinginchicks.com/workinitfordaddy.htm

It received a lot of top 40 radio play after the film release. Don't know why it has not appeared on any of the compilations.

3 out of 5 stars Missing the best part!.......2004-07-24

Overall, this cd is good. But there is a MAJOR part missing. "It Had Better Be Tonight" was a highlight of the movie; presented like a music video, it featured a fabulous performer (Fran Jefferies, I have now been informed) all swinging sixties & mod loveliness, singing in ITALIAN. So, where is she on this re-released cd? She contributed quite alot to the film and to be left off the soundtrack is a big let down. I bought this hoping to hear her singing and was left with a chorus singing in English...So, besides that, the cd is as fun as everything Mancini should be.

2 out of 5 stars Really wanted to like it.......2006-05-26

As has been pointed out, these are new recordings of old songs. and has been pointed out, none of these versions is significantly different than the originals, and none of these performances surpasses the originals. It's not a bad album, but for those of us who listened to this band when it was new, there's nothing added here. If you are new to GOF, buy History of the 20th century or Entertainment. This was a great band worth checking out, but I can't say that about this recording.

3 out of 5 stars Simulacra Is You..........2006-03-28

Re-recording previously re-packaged songs/"sex" from an era long
past? A brilliant move, I'd say. The question (up to you reader) to answer is what is "the gift" and who is "returning" it? It's not the song from Entertainment(!) which does not appear on this "covers" record---a tradition common in the post-punk period---leaving a track used for the title of the record off of the record. Think Pere Ubu's "Songs Of The Bailing Man."
So what is this recording if not the nexus to band re-formation and tour? The disc sounds just a bit like a cleaned up rehearsal recording made just prior to their first "re-union"
gigs. And why should we complain? The Gang of Four "comes home
to roost" and we're the dupes in the continuous chains consumption. "Gotta earn a living...It's very expensive today..." Because...when was the last time you heard
"He'd Send In The Army" on a non-satellite radio station?
Sure, the record is a bit of a let-down, but there are
bright and shining moments and that is one of them. Same goes for the "re-union" record of the one band that really does make sounds like Go4---Mission of Burma. So complain about the
dense, cleaner, and less nuanced sounds that come from this, but do acknowledge that the songs are still bloody admirable. Perhaps more so in the 21st C. of download, compile, consume.
"I'm lovin' it..."

1 out of 5 stars Not so Entertaining.......2006-03-18

I bought this because I didn't want to buy a cd to replace my well-worn album. Entertainment! is by far their best album; this is a lame reworking of the songs on that (mostly) with some cuts from their other albums as well.
Maybe it's because I grew up on the originals, but I think this cd sucks. However, it's still ten times better than most stuff out there, so I gave it 3 stars. The melodica is missing is some spots, the guitars sound less jagged, and the drums have lost a lot of zing, particularly on what we all want. So, if you don't have any gang of four, get this, then get entertainment.

1 out of 5 stars Damaged Goods.......2006-03-05

This is the worst idea a band has ever had. In particular, "damaged goods" is destroyed, removed of all of its original amazing tension. What we have now is an accomplished pub band rehashing past glory. Sad sad sad. Ladies and gentleman, give me Interpol over this. It pains me to say this.

4 out of 5 stars And the Party goes on . . . .......2006-02-01

More like three-and-a-half stars

And the Party goes on . . . when we think of Gang of Four, though, the Socialist Party comes to mind as readily as the all-night kind. This is what largely sets them above the recent slew of bands like the Killers and Franz Ferdinand who have made platinum by drawing heavily on the quarter-century old sound of these post-punk pioneers. Go4 show right from the beginning of Return the Gift that they still rock harder than their fresher counterparts even if grey is beginning to show. The CD starts with danceable thumping and the echoing yelps of Jon King; instead of containing the lyrical trappings of pop anthems, though, their refrain is "To Hell with Poverty," a song from their landmark Entertainment.

Return the Gift is comprised of remakes from their first three albums. They did this to update the thin drum sound of their original releases; the guitars become fuller in the mix, as well. The crisp engineering makes several of these songs more exhilarating than ever. They remain almost completely faithful to the originals, though change is evident, little of it for the worse: Andy Gill's wry intonations on "Paralysed" are dropped an octave or so from the earlier piece, likely because he has put on weight, making his diatribe more baritone than tenor these days. The political barbs sound a bit less urgent than they did half a life ago for Gill and King. The melodica, an instrument like a toy piano one blows into, is missing from the bridge of the provocative "Ether"; though Go4's music thrives off of minimal elements, the absent repetitive figure of the original cries to be replaced by something. Some of the thick tension of the original is lost.

But you still want to take on the Man. It has been said that ideological content doesn't make for good art, but if done well, it seems far better and more enduring than rehashed tales of the jet-set. These veterans seem to symbolically return the gift of false flattery that the younger generation has given them through near-plagiarism, making the ironic mantra from "Natural's Not in It" seem even more prescient now: "Repackaged sex keeps your interest"-in other words, sex only keeps the consumer's interest for the time while he dances to the latest alterna-disco hit, more likely boosting the financial interests of those with the means of production. A little Marxist materialism with your dissonant funk seems one way to develop staying power. Even though Go4 demur to their less substantial pupils, the new, more financially successful pack of musicians would be wise to pay attention and pepper their skronky riffs with something more engagé, like the content of these formidable standards.

1 out of 5 stars The movie it ain't!.......2007-06-21

I purchased this SACD after reading the glowing reviews and was disappointed when I listened to the recording. Despite being the soundtrack to a VERY LONG film, there was very little contrast in the 18 offerings on the disc. Unlike numerous classical SACDs that have greatly moved me, "Dances With Wolves" merely lulled me to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Dances With Wolves.......2006-03-03

this wonderfull score is the bast score of all time. You must have this score in your movie music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Dances With Wolves Soundtrack.......2005-09-23

This is beautiful haunting music. One of the best all-time movie scores.

5 out of 5 stars not all SACD are surround.......2005-05-05

I just wanted to let everyone know who read that review that he doesnt know what he is talking about. Yes this is a STEREO only SACD. SACD was first made only in stereo. There was no surround or hybrid SACD. And if you listen to SACD dont buy the regular CD this will blow it away.Im not trying to be mean just stating the facts. Ive been listining to SACD since 1999 when sony released this format and when I heard Billy Joel I was hooked. Have fun and buy them all because Sony is thinking of not doing SACD anymore and that would be awful.

2 out of 5 stars SACD, but NO surround sound.......2005-02-13

Very nice music - nothing wrong with that.
But.... this is a stereo CD. It has SACD written all over it and my new Denon DVD-3910 DVD player does recognise this as an SACD, but it only has 2 channels, instead of 5.1. I do own several other SACD's and these DO play 5.1 channel. Very strange....
So perhaps it's smarter to order the Stereo CD, the one with the special bonus tracks (Dances with Wolves (Special Extended Edition).

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Expecting More- Getting Less.......2006-03-16

The sound quality is excellent. The choice in music is disappointing. I can name FOUR Horner movie scores or background music that is breath-taking enough that they should have merited inclusion (but alas were not recorded here).

I don't know the dates when these music pieces were released, but it could have been within a couple of years apart. Why? Because this collection has a few tracks that sound VERY SIMILAR. Hence, this CD does NOT fully explore the extent of this great composer's talent.

5 out of 5 stars nice sampler of Horner's work.......2005-08-15

I had most of these tracks on other CDs, but this is a good sampler of Mr. Horners career on a single CD. There are some tracks which are from Original soundtracks in the Varese back catalogue, but most of hte tracks are re-recorded by the Royal Sottish National and Seattle Symphony Orchestras conducted by Cliff Eidelman, Joel McNeeley and John Debney. Also check out Heart of the Ocean (Sonic Images) and Titanic: Essential James Horner Collection (Silva America) for other overviews on Mr. Horner's career.

5 out of 5 stars James Horner as Best Movie Composer.......2000-02-05

To say that James Horner is the most talented soundtrack composer would be an understatement. To my count he has written more than 10 scores. The score for Titanic is as exciting as it is relaxing. This soundtrack is so well made, that I bought the second one! Like the movie, each peice on the soundtrack builds up to the climax. If I had it in front of me, I would be sure to give specific examples, but unfortunetly, I don't. However, I will say that the peice, Rose, which I believe is #4, captures the true meanig of this outstanding movie, and therefore proves how well a composer James Horner has proven to be.

5 out of 5 stars James Horner and John Williams are the best!!.......1999-04-08

At one time I belived the one and only great modern day film composer was John Williams, this album proved me wrong. James Horner, to me is still not as good as John Williams, but dangerously close. Horner in this album has basically summed up sum of his gratest songs ever written. The greatest song in this album is either Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn End Titles, the Courage under Fire Theme, or Apollo 13 (The Launch). Some other honorable mentions include Aliens (Futile Escape), Titanic(Southampton,Rose , Take Her to Sea Mr. Murdoch, and Braveheart's End Credits, and Cocoon: The Return (Returning Home). Mr. Horner has done a fabulous job in expressing emotion almost as good as John Wiliiams. These 13 collabarations dsisplay emotions such as hope, fright, compassion, and courage. This albums only problem's were the fact it left out the music of some other of Horner's best work(Land Before Time, Glory, and An American Tale). The album ignored Horner's "Rock" titles which include Red Heat, Commando, and Gorky Park. This has to be one of the must buy's of the year. Two Very Honest Thumbs Up For James Horner and Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Chorus.

4 out of 5 stars James Horner joins John Williams as the 2 greatest composers.......1999-04-07

I have thought John Williams was the number one film composer, but now I think he has met his match (Williams is still number 1). James Horner can display different emotions in all of his music. From the martial tone of Courage Under Fire (one of my favorites) to the mystical feeling of Casper and Cocoon: The Return. There is heart pounding Futile Chase from Aliens, and of course the heart wrenching melodies of Titanic. Braveheart gives you the tone of Scottish (the bagpipes, you can't miss them) victory. Both Brainstorm and Once Around, to me, give the feeling of hope. How do you forget the feeling of sucess in Apollo 13 or the intergalactic victory in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn. This is the perfect album if you want to hear just the great songs. Horner brings out the true emotion in films just the same way that John Williams does. The only change I would make is to add a couple songs from Land Before Time in this album. Those songs would put this album to a 5. Two Thumbs Up!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars History is not made by great men.......2006-05-18

Obviously this "self-tribute" release isn't a replacement for "Entertainment!" and "Solid Gold" (and if you don't already own those two albums, stop reading this and buy them right now), but "Return the Gift" is an awesome album in its own right. The modernized production adds new depth and heft to the guitars and drums; it's a decidedly different (and, frankly, more Franz Ferdinand-esque) sound than the dry, wiry original recordings, but it works just as well.

The band plays with just as much power as they did 25 years ago, if not quite as much agility. Consequently, a couple of the jumpier songs from "Entertainment!" (namely "Damaged Goods" and "Natural's Not in It") sound a little too restrained when held up to the live-wire originals. On the other hand, songs like "Paralysed" and "Anthrax" sound like they were born for this kind of treatment.

As for the tracklist: To my mind, the only truly regrettable exclusions are "Cheeseburger" and "I Found That Essence Rare." But it's impossible to find fault with the tracks that did make it; all of these songs are simply great no matter what year it is. The second disc of remixes is an interesting add-on, worth a couple of spins. I wanted to hear Karen O's vocals on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' version of "I Love a Man in Uniform."

Once again, "Return the Gift" does not replace the original masterpieces, but it does stand alongside them as a different but equally valid take on the same material.

4 out of 5 stars To Hell With Seniority.......2006-04-21

It seems only fair in light of 2005's rise of edgy new guitar rockers that said acts would pay their respects to new wave forefathers. Bands such as Bloc Party, The Others and Hot Hot Heat have gathered to worship jagged UK act Gang Of Four and `return the gift' by remixing some of their earlier successes such as At Home He's A Tourist, Natural's Not In It and Anthrax. Intense and unrelenting for the most part, the found metal percussion and tribal feel of Go Home's To Hell With Poverty mix initiate proceedings before Ladytron, The Others and The Rakes take on old Gang Of Four songs with varying success. The substantial amount of echo and effects added to Jon King's original vocals suggests the quality of the masters is lacking, yet most remixers work well with their source material. Yeah Yeah Yeahs add a sexy electro feel and Karen O's trademark vocals to I Love A Man In Uniform, Hot Hot Heat's remix of Damaged Goods sounds as if it's been recorded in a plumber's warehouse and The Dandy Warhols make What We All Want as wayward and unlistenable as their last album.
Included as part of this two disc set are a selection of early Gang Of Four favourites re-recorded by the reformed band last year, with better production, increased amount of savage guitar solos and new vocal oddities making the project less galling than the idea suggests. Rather than embracing punk, Gang Of Four were always a group of anti-capitalist sloganeers who preferred to read the library than burn it. Thanks to the support of bands spurred on by their angular sound, after two decades of hiatus it seems their time in the spotlight has finally arrived.

    3 out of 5 stars Pleasing introduction.......2000-07-13

After my first encounter with Chinese opera (in the film "Farewell my Concubine") I naturally wished to familiarise myself better with this musical genre. This is why I immediately pounced upon this introductory CD as soon as I saw it. The excerpts are all rather interesting, although I found the latter two a bit short. Since this kind of opera may seem a bit strange and unfamilar to westerners, it seemed to me that the best way was to provide listeners with lenghty, continuous excerpts, which is exactly what the first one, from "The Peony Pavilion", is. This was later confirmed as I got hold of, and listened to, a complete version of this work.

In general, the performers on this CD are good, sometimes, however, I felt that the sound could have been clearer (whether this was due to the recording process or the singing itself I'm not certain). There is also a refreshing variety in both the performers, and the different kinds of chinese opera (Kunqu, Sichuan, etc.) from which the excerpts are taken. On the whole a good introduction which may lead to further exploration in this field.

          Album Description

Japanese version features two bonus tracks on the remix disc, 'He'd Send in the Army' (Mevlins Remix) and 'Natural Not In It' (Tied Remix). This import only version features a bonus 14-track disc of remixes by contempary artists and producers such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ladytron, The Rakes, The Dandy Warhols, producer du jour Paul Epworth, The Rakes, Amusment Parks on Fire, The Others, Faultline and more! 27 tracks in all. V2. 2005.
