Like a modern-day Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Leftover Salmon are here to bridge the gap between hippie rock and traditional country and bluegrass. So it may help to think of The Nashville Sessions as a poor man's Will the Circle Be Unbroken, especially with Circle veterans Jeff Hanna and Randy Scruggs (who produced this record) along for the ride. Leftover invite bluegrass and newgrass heroes and jam-band buddies to contribute here, and the results are as mixed as the musical influences. Clearly, Leftover thrive on the exuberant stomps and chuckles, as on their original "Dance on Your Head" and John Hartford's "Up on the Hill Where We Do the Boogie." Both Lucinda Williams (on the Cajun-flavored romp "Lines Around Your Eyes") and Taj Mahal (on the gentle "Lovin' in My Baby's Eyes") lead the band through worthy interpretations of their own songs, while Widespread Panic's John Bell helps turn "Nobody's Fault but Mine" into a sleepy, slow-burning gem. Yet earnestness simply does not become this band, and too many cuts have a poppy sincerity (remember the Dirt Band analogy) that plays away from Salmon's strengths. --Marc Greilsamer

As vocalist for the Mavericks, Raul Malo's powerful voice and the band's success in mixing vintage material with originals arranged in "classic" styles helped revive eclecticism in Nashville. Here, he and a first-rate band of acoustic sidemen run through country, pop, and folk standards, most (not all) well-known. Mixing Bob Dylan ("You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go") and Gordon Lightfoot ("Early Morning Rain") with Jimmie Rodgers ("Waiting for a Train") and the Louvin Brothers ("The Great Atomic Power") is quintessential Malo. Having long ago channeled Roy Orbison's vocal dynamics, it's a given that he soars on "Blue Bayou" and the Henry Mancini-Johnny Mercer pop standard "Moon River." He and the musicians rework Van Morrison's "Bright Side of the Road" into a powerful gospel-style rave-up. Good as those three numbers are, the players don't sustain that same level throughout. These supremely gifted pickers, all respected instrumentalists, play it safe with solos and arrangements. Even Malo himself seems uncharacteristically low-keyed. The music is certainly pleasant, but given such a stellar blend of talent, it's also disappointingly predictable. --Rich KienzleCustomer Reviews:

What a great album!.......2006-03-19
Favorites tunes? Louvin Brothers' "Great Atomic Power", Roy's "Blue Bayou", and Hank Williams's "Weary Blues". Although the instrumental is great, I'd love to hear Malo singing Jimmie Roger's "Waiting For A Train". Maybe next time. The weakest try is Gram Parsons' "Hot Burrito", once Malo himself has done it better. Keep on singin' Raul and God bless you.

This acoustic supergroup joined forces in the summer of 1988, and the result was a true landmark in "new acoustic" music. As if bluegrass (and even "newgrass") was too constricting, the quintet--Sam Bush (mandolin), Jerry Douglas (dobro), Bela Fleck (banjo), Mark O'Connor (violin), and Edgar Meyer (bass)--incorporates classical-style themes and arrangements within the context of bluegrass instrumentation. Their unbelievable technique and musical ability was never in question; however, what makes the album special is the uncanny blend of precision and freedom, of improvisation and structure. Each of the 10 compositions were written by a different twosome (do the math permutations). Playful bluesy lopes ("Pink Flamingo") accompany tinges of reggae ("The Locks of Dread"), Celtic ("Macedonia"), and Middle Eastern ("Blue Men of the Sahara") music. There are urgent burners, somber mood pieces, and tender ballads, all delivered with grace. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

No matter what you think of bluegrass or banjos, anyone who takes delight in music that is intricate, brilliant, sensuous and evocative, will find much to love about this album. Jazz fans will appreciate the Pat Metheny undertones and harmonies in tracks like "One Winter's Night." I would be first in line for any new project by this line-up of virtuoso musicians. What a joy to listen to flawless musical jamming!

Now that bluegrass is (again) momentarily cool, leave it to the Chieftains to (again) plunge an all-star country cast into the Celtic wellsprings of old-time music, just as they did 10 years ago with 1992's Another Country. It's no surprise that the Chieftains can handle the rapacious rhythms of a hot fiddle tune; whether they can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Tim O'Brien, Béla Fleck, Ricky Skaggs, and Del McCoury is another matter. Rest assured they can, and they even coax some inspired jamming from Earl Scruggs--who sounds like he has something to prove on "Sally Goodin"--and a chilling vocal from Alison Krauss on "Molly Ban," the Celtic equivalent of "Fair and Tender Maidens." The Chieftains' only miscue comes in wasting Vince Gill's talents on a busily arranged "Dark as a Dungeon." While this set will likely appeal more to fans of contemporary Irish music than to hard-core twang fans, anyone who loves acoustic roots music will find these collaborations refreshing, if not down-right bracing. --Roy KastenCustomer Reviews:
Roots of Bluegrass.......2007-05-24
Yep, shure 'nough is, y'all.
Well, sorta...
When people hear "Chieftains" they're thinking Irish, Gaelic..but BLUE GRASS? Actually it's not a stretch at all considering that Irish folk music played a major role in the creation of American folk music, Blue Grass (Tenessee, Kentucky)--and via Blue Grass to Country & Western. Of course other ethnic flavors are involved including Scottish & colonial British, French, Spanish & African (Gospel, Blues, Jazz.)
To offer a comparison, the soundtrack of "O, Brother, Where Art Thou?" gives a pretty good sampler of Blue Grass, & this CD does the same--but with more songs, more A-List US artists (John Hiatt, Bela Fleck, Earl Scruggs, Vince Gill, Alison Krauss, Lyle Lovetti, Paty Griffin & other greats) resulting in this more artistically cohesive CD.
So where are the Chiefains you might ask? Well, it's true they are more in the studio background than the forefront, but once you realize how effective that the background is, you can enjoy the final result.
The CD features the original musical treatment of such standards as Don't Let Your Deal Go Down, Whole Heaps of Little Horses, Tennesse Stud, and Katie Dear [A variant of Silver Dagger]

Highlights include the instrumentals "Sally Goodin" and the medley of reels, along with Vince Gill's Take on the Merle Travis classic "Dark As a Dungeon" and Gillian Welch & David Rawlings mournful "Katie Dear." The album closes on a rousing note with the 10-minute romp "Give the Fiddler a Dram."
While I have to agree with my fellow reviewers who feel that the Chieftains have been relegated to session player status on this recording, this is a thoroughly satisfying album from start to finish. [Playing Time 54:30] RECOMMENDED

Another masterpiece by the brilliant Charlie Rich........2004-03-15
in the mid-1960s - "The Many New Sides of Charlie Rich"
and "The Best Years" plus three previously unreleased tracks.
If you are a Charlie Rich fan (and you should be) and don't have this CD, your collection isn't complete. Charlie considered these tracks among his best "studio" work. There is such a variety here that listeners will be stunned and Charlie plays all the piano (something he often gave up until "Pictures and Paintings" in 1992). From rockers like "Down and Out" to incredible ballads like "The Best Years" to little gems like "Tears A Go-Go" and the magnificent, "ahead of its time" "I Can't Go On" and the wonderful rendition of "I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water," this is the eclectic master singer and pianist at his best. As liner notes writer "Dave Marsh" states: "I slipped needle into groove and entered a new world. What gave Charlie Rich his continuing grip on me is his heart." This is a must have CD - grab it!

This is the initial volume of a triple-CD release of The Civil War soundtrack, and it's hard to think that the other two could equal this first installment. The Nashville Sessions evokes images of pitched tents and cannons very well. Bookended with narration by the great casting of Charlie Daniels, the compilation is filled by low-key, solemn tracks. "Old Gray Coat," starts out bleak, then kicks into a nice little country-pop song, but the lyrics uncannily convey images of a war few of us really know much about. The best song on the compilation--the lone contribution by an African American--is BeBe Winans's "River Jordan," narrated from the perspective of the black soldiers called upon to fight in the war. It's a touching, powerful gospel number that really breaks loose at the end. Other standouts include the piano ballad "Tell My Father" by Kevin Sharp and "Missing You (My Bill)" by Deana Carter. --Aaron TassanoCustomer Reviews:

Haunting.......2002-03-22
THE SNAKE SONG & THE SPIDER SONG immediately grabbed me with their weird, bluesiness. Both are stark and ominous, the kind of Van Zandt I've come to appreciate. Unlike most of the other tracks on this album, they have not been re-packaged on later releases. This is really the only place I know of to hear them.
AT MY WINDOW, TWO GIRLS & NO PLACE TO FALL are certified Van Zandt classics and can be found on many of his other releases but I prefer the gentle acoustic stylings of these versions. Needless to say, there isn't a bad song on here. I'd say he's in peak form on this one. The writing and delivery is subtle and haunting thrhough and through.
To quote AT MY WINDOW, this album "leaves gentle traces". It may not be his most popular album, but it certainly is one of his best.
On a side note, fans of Will Oldham/Palace could do themselves a favor by picking this one up.
