4 out of 5 stars Excellent sample.......2005-10-25

This two disc set is a good sampler of Beethoven; I had forgotten how inspiring his work could be. This set has motivated me to order all three of the Deutch Grammaphone two disc which together include all 9 of Beethoven's symphonies.

4 out of 5 stars Some of the Best.......2005-09-11

Some of these songs are the best that I've heard. I also enjoy the fact that this album provides the ENTIRE movement or selection, unlike some of the other albums that I've heard that only play for a little bit of the song. One example is Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major Second Movement, this movement is one of my favorites to begin with and hearing it so smoothly and masterfully recorded made my heart sing the first time I heard this all the way to end (the other recordings usually stop after the major key shift after the first theme). Also the Egmont Overture is one of the best full versions that I've had the pleasure of enjoying performed this well. The Moonlight Sonata First Movement I found to be nice, but there are better versions out there. For those people just looking for a nice collection of Beethoven songs that are well recorded and well performed, I stronly suggest that you purchase this album.

4 out of 5 stars Storms.......2005-03-09

Classical music compilations are extremely difficult to review. You are always fighting with someone else's opinion of what is "Best of" material. And why should we buy selections when we could buy the entire pieces and hear them played as the composers intended?

A quick answer would be simple: we simply cannot afford to purchase every single piece by every single composer we love. And if the buyer is familiar with the music, he or she would perhaps only want the famous selections everyone knows. In my case, I am particularly picky with recordings and don't have the time to meddle with libraries or going to stores that offer listening stations. Recordings vary greatly and so does playing ability. So why did I go with Essential Beethoven?

It is released with Decca, one of the finest classical music companies out there. You are guaranteed no gimmick or inexpensively recorded tracks on this compilation. Essential B. also has a wider selection than other compilations I looked at. For once, there isn't a movement to be found from the Fifth Symphony. If that's all you want to buy, look elsewhere. Essential B. has pieces I was not familiar with, so here I am listening to it.

Regrettably, there are three distinct issues with this recording, and I want to get them out of the way. 1. Für Elise is atrociously boring to listen to. As a pianist, it is fun to play and almost required learning for the beginner. It should've been dropped. 2. Piano Concerto No. 5 is missing the third movement. It is common to drop the first movement here, but the second and third movements are programmatically tied, providing some of the most emotionally charged music ever put down on lined paper. Also, this rendition of the concerto is less than inspiring and I regret that it is the famous Ashkenazy playing this version. There is almost no life in the playing. 3. The remastering could've been better. The listener will enjoy the loud and boisterous pieces, but the quieter parts, and even the soft piano solos, will have him straining his ears to the point of exasperation. Because of this, I recommend listening on headphones or in a place where you can turn the volume up a little more than usual.

That aside, the rest of the tracks are well recorded, extremely well played, and varied enough to quench even the most learned ears. Decca has included pieces conducted by Sir Georg Solti, one of the greatest conducters in my opinion. (Another "collection" solely conducted by Solti is the "Immortal Beloved" soundtrack.) The orchestral pieces are lush and the range is dynamic. (A little too dynamic, like I stated above, in some areas.) The inclusion of movement IV from Symphony no. 8 pleases me, as I feel this is the least appreciated symphony, overshadowed by Symphony no. 9

The piano pieces are some of the best renditions I've heard. I own all of Ashkenazy's sonatas, so it was nice to hear a movement from "The Tempest" played by Stephen Kovacevich, who plays with fierce determination. Selections from B's piano concertos are fantastic and have prompted me to delve further into listening to more concertos from him. The Rondo from Piano Concerto No. 2, played by Radu Lupu, is one of the most upbeat and wonderfully played pieces here.

To round things off nicely is a movement from the Violin Sonata No. 5, played by the one and only Itzhak Perlman! The piano is caressed by Mr. Ashkenazy himself, and he does so lovingly. You will also find pieces from a string quartet, a violin Romance (and orchestra), and one overture: the "Egmont." I'm not a huge fan of this rendition either, but that's probably because I've heard the Egmont a thousand times.

A huge bonus with this collection are the three choral selections at the end, two of which are from "Fidelio," an opera I've yet to hear in its entirety. The Prisoners' Chorus is beautiful. The introduction sounds very much like a major contribution to Charles Ives's 1906 piece "The Unanswered Question." The compilation ends with Symphony No. 9's finale, but unfortunately, it is a horribly edited excerpt, and mixed extremely hot. I have to turn my volume down everytime this comes on.

I would like to make a little note about the art design, however. Credit here is given to Mark Millington, who did a fine job blending black & white photos of storm clouds, an inspiring sculpture, and blackletter-styled fonts. The CDs themselves are a contrasting bright orange. As a sucker for marketing, I would've plunked money down for this compilation just for the art!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful selections.......2003-11-08

My kids and I have really enjoyed this CD. This is a great collection of music with high quality performances.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to Beethoven.......2003-04-05

Great intro to beethoven. There are many great performances by Ashkenazy, Academy of Saint Martin in the fields, Concertgetbouw Orchestra and many other exceptional artists. I would recommend this disc as it contains the masterpieces of beethoven, even though not all of them.

"The Essential Falla" is just that, including all of Manuel de Falla's major works (performed by the likes of Dutoit, Fruhbeck de Burgos and de Larrocha) on these two CDs. Highlights are excellent performances of Falla's three most famous works: "El amor brujo", "Noches en los jardines de Espana" and "El Sombrero de tres picos". The rest of the included music is perhaps less well-know but no less enjoyable. Perhaps the only quibble I have with this CD is the enclusion of the Harpsicord Concerto. While it is an enjoyable piece, it is very much a Stravinsky-esque neo-classical work, and it seems somewhat out of place amongst Falla's other, very Spanish, works. Nonetheless, if you enjoy 20th Century Spanish music, this CD is indeed an essential.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2006-09-08

Marilyn Martin is a terrific singer with a strong, sexy voice. Why she only recorded 2 albums is a mystery, but she does appear recently on Jim Wilson's "A Place In My Heart" cd, released by Artemis Nashville. Hopefully this re-emergence is a sign of things to come.

5 out of 5 stars This Album Was Long Overdue For A CD Release.......2006-01-03

With a voice equal to the stronger female voices of the mid-1980s, it's hard to understand how Marilyn Martin didn't reach a greater audience. Best known for the duet "Seperate Lives" with Phil Collins, Marilyn recorded at least one other duet with well known composer David Foster, and even sang a cover of Stevie Nicks' "Sorcerer".

On her first solo album, Marilyn proved she had the pipes to contend with the best. "Night Moves" is a song you might expect from Pat Benatar, a dark song of hidden and forbidden love, laden with squealing rock guitar. Her second single, "Move Closer" was sensual, and the video reminicent of Olivia Newton-John's "Soul Kiss". Marilyn had a passionate, red-hot ballad in this mellow tune.

There are at leaset two stand out album tracks worth the price of this package. The peppy, almost bouncing rocker "One Step Closer" and the scorching "Beauty Or The Beast", akin to the likes of Heart's Ann Wilson in power and soaring vocals. To have these four tracks alone on CD after nearly twenty years is a real treat.

Marilyn may have slipped from commercial radar after her second album, however, you can find her on a Japanese release from 2002 entitled SINCERELY... MARIYA TAKEUCHI SONGBOOK. She sings "Plastic Love" and "When Angels Cry" wih Joe Pizzulo. With her first album finally making it to CD format, hopefully, Marilyn's second release THIS IS SERIOUS will soon be re-released as well.

4 out of 5 stars Love this singer!.......2005-09-23

I had this album on cassette back in college. Loved it! Marilyn Martin has pipes akin to Pat Benatar and Laura Branigan -- part rock, part torch, and entirely awesome. Martin should have become a bigger star, but unfortunately there seems to be only so much room in the music industry for divas. Thank goodness this album has been reissued. Hopefully a whole new slew of Marilyn martin fans will appear. A very talented rocker, indeed!

5 out of 5 stars She's Mine Again!.......2005-08-18

I've waited forever for this one to come out on CD. The remastered issue is excellent. In the 80's I wore out my cassette rockin' to this lady. Initially Marilyn was a backing vocalist for Stevie Nicks when I first became aquainted with her talents. Two of my favorite cuts are, "Night Moves and Turn it On." Although she had a hit with the guitar-driven, "Night Moves," the suits just never knew what to do with such a versatile artist. In fact ther are eight producers on this CD. Worst still, her follow up album they tried to turn her into a dance act! Enough said. This sultry singer rocks!!

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY!! This gets a CD release!!!!.......2005-08-11

This was one of my favorite albums in college. I have searched and searched and searched for it on cd, the only copies I could find were Japanese imports for over $50. FINALLY, this has come to cd. Every song on here is amazing, her voice is absolutely beautiful, and I never understood why her career never took off as it should. "We're on the edge....reaching the point of no return"....I am SO happy this is finally out on CD. "Beauty and the Beast", "Night Moves", "Body and the Beat", "Move Closer"...all classics in my mind. Buy it...and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-04-29

Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1645-1704) was the most distinguished French religious composer of his era. His output includes eleven Masses and numerous motets, psalms and oratorios, many of them extended works rich in texture, color and harmony, and contrpuntally resourceful. Melodically he derived a distinctive style, imposing French embelishments and phrase structure on a basically Italian idiom. His 30 or so theater pieces reveal wit and facility.
However, he is still in danger of being known for only one or two works, the famous 'Te Deum in D ' and the delightful 'Messe de Minuit' which are the selections on this disc.
This recording has two different dates and conductors that are 10 years apart. The 'Te Deum' was recorded in 1978 under the leadership of Sir Philip Ledger and the 'Minuit' was recorded in 1967 under the direction of Sir David Willcocks. The performance has a different line-up of soloists, but they are all quite excellent and perform very skillfully. The King's College Choir always sings with perfection and really it would be very difficult to hear that there are two different groups except for the different soloists. This music is very pleasant and sounds almost secular at times, and it is very easy to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A choral masterpiece of baroque music.......2007-01-09

I've known about the Charpentier Te Deum since I bought an old vinyl copy in the mid 1960s when I was a college student. This Te Deum is one of the towering masterpieces of the baroque. It is energetic, colorful and filled with the lavish orchestration Charpentier is known for. I have in my collection around 10 Te Deums by baroque composers, and the Charpentier has always been my favorite. The recording here is excellent, and the fine ensemble led by Christopher Keyte is right on with the pacing. A superb masterpiece -- well done by all.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-01-20

The 'Stabat Mater' is a medieval poem describing the anguish of the Virgin Mary during the crucifixion written at the end of the 13th century by a Franciscan lay brother named Jacopone da Todi. It did not attract widespread attention from composers until the 18th century when Alessandro Scarlatti, his son Domenico, Vivaldi, Bononcini, Haydn and Pergolesi as well as many others set the poem to music. They were, no doubt, attracted to the emotional and dramatic nature of the poem, and most of the composers were commissioned by various individuals for non-liturgical devotions or concerts.

Alessandro Scarlatti's seems to be the earliest of the group. He scored it for soprano and alto voices(probably sung by a 'castrati' at that time), two violins and continuo. This setting was used frequently until Pergolesi's setting around 1735. Pergolesi modeled his composition after Scarlatti; for one thing both are scored for the same 2 voices and strings. Both divide the poem into a number of duets and solo arias. One difference between the two settings is that Pergolesi's is shorter and rather more concise.
It is not certain that Pergolesi actually wrote the 'Magnificat' on this disc, but it is a quality and richly imaginative work, nonetheless.
Domenico's 'Stabat Mater' is set for 10 voices and organ and its mood is meditative clearly intended for liturgical use.
Bononcini's 'Stabat Mater' was composed during his residence in Vienna. It is unique because of its harmonic and contrapuntal writing, in the choruses in particular and in the soprano aria 'O Quam Tristis'. It could have been written by Bach himself.
The two 'Crucifixus' settings by Lotti and Caldara are both examples of the old-style composition as it had developed by the late Baroque; the harmonic and expressive techlniques of the new style were applied to the old polyphony, providing a highly emotional vehicle for a creative composer.
Opera and cantata were the 2 principal forms which Alessandro Scarlatti practised, but he also composed some superb motets, two of which are featured on this disc. 'O Magnum Mysterium' is for double choir eight-part counterpoint. 'Domine refugium factus es nobis' is for five voices; it is in a style that relies much on sonorous harmony and counterpoint; in fact it has a grandeur that anticipates Handel.

I think that it is interesting to note that there are varied groups and soloists performing on these disc, and all are quite good. Pergolesi's 'Stabat Mater' is disappointing to me because it does not have a countertenor performing the alto part; it is really not authentic since at that time either 'castrati' or male altos did so. ON disc 2, there is a countertenor performing in the correct capacity, and I obviously prefer that disc. But all renditions are done skillfully, and you certainly have a lot of beautiful music included therein.

2 out of 5 stars NOT for relaxation.......2006-05-21

Save your money if you buy this CD simply for relaxation. There are a lot more choices better than this one. The music is slow, but they are not soothing and they are not attractive. The "For Relaxation" series is a large series. And I would say this series produce both good and bad quality CD. I would recommend you to try Bach for relaxation, Chopin for relaxation and guitar for relaxation. These three CDs are the best in the series. While apart from this CD, also DO NOT try Tchaikovsky for relaxation as this is also not a good one for relaxation. The music are sometimes too sad.

5 out of 5 stars Well produced Bargain!.......2000-12-23

When I first noticed this bright red CD in the record store, the image struck me at first as rather odd looking. At the time I didn't know exactly what I was responding to; but thinking back now about what it was that I noticed, I would have to say that it was the name "Brahms" in hot white neon letters with the word relaxation directly under it. This had seemed like a contradiction in terms to me; so I passed up buying this CD on several occasions; thinking that it may not have been very well produced. In addition to that, I had already bought "Brahms for Book Lovers" and felt completely satisfied with the purchase, I saw no reason to have another "relaxation" CD dedicated to Brahms music. What changed my mind was noticing that with the exception of the Romanze from the String Quartet in C minor, the pieces on this collection do not overlap with the "Brahms for Book Lovers" collection. I then purchased it with the hope of having it be a companion to the "Book Lovers" CD that I already owned. As it turns out, this actually is a wonderful collection of Brahms music. It fulfills the idea of "Relaxation" quite well. The recordings and the playing are top notch. The C minor Quartet piece on track 10 sounds slightly strained in comparison to the one performed on the "Book Lovers" compilation; but this is only a minor point. Sir Colin Davis conducts the Bavarian Radio Symphony in a broad flowing Variation VII of the Haydn Variations Op. 56a. I have never heard this variation played so expansively. Gerhard Oppitz performs a sensitive interpretation of the B Minor Intermezzo that is clear and resonant. There is a lyrical beauty that pervades the Andante from the C Minor quartet; which is played so lovingly by the Boston Chamber players. I could go on but I think you get the idea. If you already have the "Book Lovers" CD then get this as a companion to it. If you have neither then you are in for a real treat. This is a well-produced bargain CD that every Brahms lover should own. Also, If you are looking for a general introduction to Brahms, this would be a great way to start-wonderful music!

3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2002-02-14

This is not a bad recording but it has some serious problems. Although it's sung in English, some of the diction is so mushy (particularly the lead tenor's) that it's hard to tell what the language is. The vocal performances overall are missing the Viennese/Hungarian style. There's a bit too much of the English music hall stylistically, particularly in the comic numbers. Still, Kalman's music is glorious and deserves to be better-known than it is.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious Italian Renaissance Reissue.......2006-04-14

Really happy to have found and purchased this reissue on Sony classical of "Gesualdo- highlights of his Madrigals, Galliards, Canzonettas". Features beautiful remastered performances in the early opera style(Opera was born in the mid to late Renaissance), with string instrumental interludes. May seem somewhat "sedate" to modern early music listeners, but I find it adds to it's charm- perfect background music for reading or relaxing. If you've ever seen "The Agony & The Estasy" (Michalangelo-Charlton Heston) similar music is performed during a banquet scene. 5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Why was this reissued?.......2005-12-09

Luckily, I only blew about seven bucks on this CD. I can't figure out why this was reissued, although it probably has to do the the big names involved. The vocal performances are not only rough around the edges, but rather under-characterized. But they are spectacular compared with the string performances, which can be described as amateurish at best.

1 out of 5 stars I will not be buying this disk.......2005-01-09

These singers come from the grand opera tradition and they do not seem to have been able to adapt their voices to the stylistic rigours needed to perform Gesualdo's works. The reviewers who stated that the tuning is poor, are correct. We actually listened to these first few bars with the score in hand, and it was totally obvious that the pitch, intonation and timing was very poor.

3 out of 5 stars I'm sorry, but even by chromatic standards it's out of tune........2001-11-20

Yes, these performances are mostly _really_ out of tune even considering the chromatic adventures of Gesualdo. Frankly I'd rather hear other performances, though I haven't seen lots of other Gesualdo collections out there. This is a nice historical recording and has a broad range of Gesualdo's works, so it still might be worthwhile.

The chromatic nature of Gesualdo's music is even more shocking when performed in tune.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2001-09-06

My heart skipped a beat when I saw this recording was available on CD... I used to have it on vinyl 25 years ago when I was in college, and nearly wore it out. (In fact, I think I did replace it at least once!)

This is wonderful music, lovingly performed. I agree, as an earlier reviewer complains, that the singers are occasionally not in tune, but ... does one want to complain that Casals is not worth listening to because he couldn't play in tune? I think our ears in this day and age have become spoiled by over-edited and electronically perfected recordings. This recording is thrilling and delightful for precisely the reason that these great singers (look at the names!) got together to record some excellent 5-part vocal music, and did not (obviously) go back and re-record every little moment that didn't go smoothly. It feels much like attending a live performance.

The music of Gesualdo is extraordinary in it's own right, of course, with harmonies that presage Wagner a couple of hundred years ahead of schedule. This recording, with solo voices on each of the 5 parts, let's us really hear all the subtleties of the intricate voice leading that Gesualdo accomplishes.

Though Horne is audibly at the end of her long and rich career, she did a good deed for American music with this disc, which consists of songs by Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, and a new song cycle by William Bolcom, from which the disc takes its title. Horne's voice has a quiver, a lack of center, almost as if it refuses to stop singing Rossini (Horne's lifelong specialty). However, it's worth buying for the Bolcom cycle, which is one of his best vocal works, typically an eclectic, natural outgrowth of Bernstein's style with Horne gamely employing a wide range of vocal techniques with more eloquence than one could hope for. --David Patrick Stearns

    5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally moving.......2003-10-16

This is AMERICAN SONGS at their most moving and emotional best, not to mention with great melody. Unlike a lot of American song literature (not broadway type, but "serious classical art songs"), these songs are actually quite beautiful, melodic, and can touch the heart of the listener easily. There is no strain to enjoy them. There is a bit of "sameness" between them, which is my only complaint about this recording; one piece starts to sound like another, especially if you are not listening carefully while listening. Even then, it is still very lovely.

It has been mentioned that Horne is now far past her prime, and that may be, but even far past her prime she is far better than most singers half her age. There is still vibrancy, life, and depth to her voice. It communicates on a very deep level. Martin Katz, her life long accompanist, is, as usual, a revelation as an accompanist. Unlike people think, the accompanist just doesn't play in the background, he is a very vital part of making a performance work. Accompaning singers is a very new art form, and many performers of earlier ages simply had very bad accompanist. With Gerald Moore we started to have people who knew how to support the singer, actually adding to the performance giving it depth and helping the singer shine. Now we are so used to good accompanist, and are so accustomed to their high level of performance, it is very easy to forget what they add.

Katz knows Horne well, and is fully aware of when she is having troubles supporting a phrase, or when she is in best voice. He gives so much to her awesome performance through his very sensitive way of playing this music.

I would recommend this for anyone to buy: fans of modern art songs, fans of Marilyn Horne, and simply fans of good singing.

5 out of 5 stars Horne brings these wonderful masterpieces to life!.......1999-07-17

Throughout the Barber, Bolcom and Bernstein, Marilyn Horne uses her ability to combine technical definition with artistic movement and expansion. Having had the opportunity to see her perform this literature live was an emotionally elevating experience. The way Horne and Katz have reworked a few of the Berstein pieces brings new life and perspectuve to these already wonderful pieces. I highly recommend this recording for the casual classical listener, as well as, for the student that enjoys learning from a master through their art.
