Some of the Best.......2005-09-11

A quick answer would be simple: we simply cannot afford to purchase every single piece by every single composer we love. And if the buyer is familiar with the music, he or she would perhaps only want the famous selections everyone knows. In my case, I am particularly picky with recordings and don't have the time to meddle with libraries or going to stores that offer listening stations. Recordings vary greatly and so does playing ability. So why did I go with Essential Beethoven?
It is released with Decca, one of the finest classical music companies out there. You are guaranteed no gimmick or inexpensively recorded tracks on this compilation. Essential B. also has a wider selection than other compilations I looked at. For once, there isn't a movement to be found from the Fifth Symphony. If that's all you want to buy, look elsewhere. Essential B. has pieces I was not familiar with, so here I am listening to it.
Regrettably, there are three distinct issues with this recording, and I want to get them out of the way. 1. Für Elise is atrociously boring to listen to. As a pianist, it is fun to play and almost required learning for the beginner. It should've been dropped. 2. Piano Concerto No. 5 is missing the third movement. It is common to drop the first movement here, but the second and third movements are programmatically tied, providing some of the most emotionally charged music ever put down on lined paper. Also, this rendition of the concerto is less than inspiring and I regret that it is the famous Ashkenazy playing this version. There is almost no life in the playing. 3. The remastering could've been better. The listener will enjoy the loud and boisterous pieces, but the quieter parts, and even the soft piano solos, will have him straining his ears to the point of exasperation. Because of this, I recommend listening on headphones or in a place where you can turn the volume up a little more than usual.
That aside, the rest of the tracks are well recorded, extremely well played, and varied enough to quench even the most learned ears. Decca has included pieces conducted by Sir Georg Solti, one of the greatest conducters in my opinion. (Another "collection" solely conducted by Solti is the "Immortal Beloved" soundtrack.) The orchestral pieces are lush and the range is dynamic. (A little too dynamic, like I stated above, in some areas.) The inclusion of movement IV from Symphony no. 8 pleases me, as I feel this is the least appreciated symphony, overshadowed by Symphony no. 9
The piano pieces are some of the best renditions I've heard. I own all of Ashkenazy's sonatas, so it was nice to hear a movement from "The Tempest" played by Stephen Kovacevich, who plays with fierce determination. Selections from B's piano concertos are fantastic and have prompted me to delve further into listening to more concertos from him. The Rondo from Piano Concerto No. 2, played by Radu Lupu, is one of the most upbeat and wonderfully played pieces here.
To round things off nicely is a movement from the Violin Sonata No. 5, played by the one and only Itzhak Perlman! The piano is caressed by Mr. Ashkenazy himself, and he does so lovingly. You will also find pieces from a string quartet, a violin Romance (and orchestra), and one overture: the "Egmont." I'm not a huge fan of this rendition either, but that's probably because I've heard the Egmont a thousand times.
A huge bonus with this collection are the three choral selections at the end, two of which are from "Fidelio," an opera I've yet to hear in its entirety. The Prisoners' Chorus is beautiful. The introduction sounds very much like a major contribution to Charles Ives's 1906 piece "The Unanswered Question." The compilation ends with Symphony No. 9's finale, but unfortunately, it is a horribly edited excerpt, and mixed extremely hot. I have to turn my volume down everytime this comes on.
I would like to make a little note about the art design, however. Credit here is given to Mark Millington, who did a fine job blending black & white photos of storm clouds, an inspiring sculpture, and blackletter-styled fonts. The CDs themselves are a contrasting bright orange. As a sucker for marketing, I would've plunked money down for this compilation just for the art!

Finally!.......2006-09-08
This Album Was Long Overdue For A CD Release.......2006-01-03
On her first solo album, Marilyn proved she had the pipes to contend with the best. "Night Moves" is a song you might expect from Pat Benatar, a dark song of hidden and forbidden love, laden with squealing rock guitar. Her second single, "Move Closer" was sensual, and the video reminicent of Olivia Newton-John's "Soul Kiss". Marilyn had a passionate, red-hot ballad in this mellow tune.
There are at leaset two stand out album tracks worth the price of this package. The peppy, almost bouncing rocker "One Step Closer" and the scorching "Beauty Or The Beast", akin to the likes of Heart's Ann Wilson in power and soaring vocals. To have these four tracks alone on CD after nearly twenty years is a real treat.
Marilyn may have slipped from commercial radar after her second album, however, you can find her on a Japanese release from 2002 entitled SINCERELY... MARIYA TAKEUCHI SONGBOOK. She sings "Plastic Love" and "When Angels Cry" wih Joe Pizzulo. With her first album finally making it to CD format, hopefully, Marilyn's second release THIS IS SERIOUS will soon be re-released as well.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-04-29
However, he is still in danger of being known for only one or two works, the famous 'Te Deum in D ' and the delightful 'Messe de Minuit' which are the selections on this disc.
This recording has two different dates and conductors that are 10 years apart. The 'Te Deum' was recorded in 1978 under the leadership of Sir Philip Ledger and the 'Minuit' was recorded in 1967 under the direction of Sir David Willcocks. The performance has a different line-up of soloists, but they are all quite excellent and perform very skillfully. The King's College Choir always sings with perfection and really it would be very difficult to hear that there are two different groups except for the different soloists. This music is very pleasant and sounds almost secular at times, and it is very easy to enjoy.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-01-20
Alessandro Scarlatti's seems to be the earliest of the group. He scored it for soprano and alto voices(probably sung by a 'castrati' at that time), two violins and continuo. This setting was used frequently until Pergolesi's setting around 1735. Pergolesi modeled his composition after Scarlatti; for one thing both are scored for the same 2 voices and strings. Both divide the poem into a number of duets and solo arias. One difference between the two settings is that Pergolesi's is shorter and rather more concise.
It is not certain that Pergolesi actually wrote the 'Magnificat' on this disc, but it is a quality and richly imaginative work, nonetheless.
Domenico's 'Stabat Mater' is set for 10 voices and organ and its mood is meditative clearly intended for liturgical use.
Bononcini's 'Stabat Mater' was composed during his residence in Vienna. It is unique because of its harmonic and contrapuntal writing, in the choruses in particular and in the soprano aria 'O Quam Tristis'. It could have been written by Bach himself.
The two 'Crucifixus' settings by Lotti and Caldara are both examples of the old-style composition as it had developed by the late Baroque; the harmonic and expressive techlniques of the new style were applied to the old polyphony, providing a highly emotional vehicle for a creative composer.
Opera and cantata were the 2 principal forms which Alessandro Scarlatti practised, but he also composed some superb motets, two of which are featured on this disc. 'O Magnum Mysterium' is for double choir eight-part counterpoint. 'Domine refugium factus es nobis' is for five voices; it is in a style that relies much on sonorous harmony and counterpoint; in fact it has a grandeur that anticipates Handel.
I think that it is interesting to note that there are varied groups and soloists performing on these disc, and all are quite good. Pergolesi's 'Stabat Mater' is disappointing to me because it does not have a countertenor performing the alto part; it is really not authentic since at that time either 'castrati' or male altos did so. ON disc 2, there is a countertenor performing in the correct capacity, and I obviously prefer that disc. But all renditions are done skillfully, and you certainly have a lot of beautiful music included therein.

I'm sorry, but even by chromatic standards it's out of tune........2001-11-20
The chromatic nature of Gesualdo's music is even more shocking when performed in tune.
Wonderful!.......2001-09-06
This is wonderful music, lovingly performed. I agree, as an earlier reviewer complains, that the singers are occasionally not in tune, but ... does one want to complain that Casals is not worth listening to because he couldn't play in tune? I think our ears in this day and age have become spoiled by over-edited and electronically perfected recordings. This recording is thrilling and delightful for precisely the reason that these great singers (look at the names!) got together to record some excellent 5-part vocal music, and did not (obviously) go back and re-record every little moment that didn't go smoothly. It feels much like attending a live performance.
The music of Gesualdo is extraordinary in it's own right, of course, with harmonies that presage Wagner a couple of hundred years ahead of schedule. This recording, with solo voices on each of the 5 parts, let's us really hear all the subtleties of the intricate voice leading that Gesualdo accomplishes.

Though Horne is audibly at the end of her long and rich career, she did a good deed for American music with this disc, which consists of songs by Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, and a new song cycle by William Bolcom, from which the disc takes its title. Horne's voice has a quiver, a lack of center, almost as if it refuses to stop singing Rossini (Horne's lifelong specialty). However, it's worth buying for the Bolcom cycle, which is one of his best vocal works, typically an eclectic, natural outgrowth of Bernstein's style with Horne gamely employing a wide range of vocal techniques with more eloquence than one could hope for. --David Patrick StearnsCustomer Reviews:
Exceptionally moving.......2003-10-16
It has been mentioned that Horne is now far past her prime, and that may be, but even far past her prime she is far better than most singers half her age. There is still vibrancy, life, and depth to her voice. It communicates on a very deep level. Martin Katz, her life long accompanist, is, as usual, a revelation as an accompanist. Unlike people think, the accompanist just doesn't play in the background, he is a very vital part of making a performance work. Accompaning singers is a very new art form, and many performers of earlier ages simply had very bad accompanist. With Gerald Moore we started to have people who knew how to support the singer, actually adding to the performance giving it depth and helping the singer shine. Now we are so used to good accompanist, and are so accustomed to their high level of performance, it is very easy to forget what they add.
Katz knows Horne well, and is fully aware of when she is having troubles supporting a phrase, or when she is in best voice. He gives so much to her awesome performance through his very sensitive way of playing this music.
I would recommend this for anyone to buy: fans of modern art songs, fans of Marilyn Horne, and simply fans of good singing.
Horne brings these wonderful masterpieces to life!.......1999-07-17
