In contrast to much of the testosterone-loaded Definitive Jux camp, RJD2 has always seemed a man apart with his intricate, almost delicate sound collages. When his Dead Ringer appeared in 2002, many championed RJ as a rival to DJ Shadow as hip-hop's premier instrumentalist, and his ability to manipulate moods through music suggests that RJ is more than another introverted beat-maker stuck inside a bedroom. The Horror expands on RJ's previous work with revisits to some Dead Ringer favorites like the funkalicious "Let the Good Times Roll" and dramatic, campy title track. He retunes his own material to impressive effect on the remix for "Ghostwriter," but entirely new songs like the soulful, melancholy "Sell the World" are most interesting as RJ nimbly stitches together threads and loops of found sound into sublime new compositions. The bonus disc in this set includes live concert footage as well as the animated video for "The Horror." --Oliver Wang

5 out of 5 stars End all, Be all..........2004-08-18

I'm dropping this review out of pure frustration. Nobody has really nailed the "really-real" about this record, so here we go, short n' sweet.

This "e.p." is about 45 minutes long. Full album length. It comes with a bonus CD that plays on your computer (it's not a DVD). The bonus CD is pretty swell and easy to navigate. The live footage of RJ is sublime. If you are familiar with DEADRINGER you may get a little upset because the "remixes" are very subtle remixes, meaning you'll have to really listen to hear any differences. If you're not familiar with DEADRINGER and you're between picking up DR or THE HORROR, I say get this! There's less filler, and more importantly, fewer MC's. RJD2's music really gets bogged down when he ads rhymes to the beats.

The packaging is pretty spooky, movies like WRONG TURN & TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE come to mind, grainy crime scene footage that doesn't match the music at all (but that's what's so f'n cool about it).

If you need a little sum'n sum'n to compare it to, think DJ SHADOW after a year on Prozac.

Another DEF JUX classic.

5 out of 5 stars Hip hop at his best.......2004-04-19

I don't know if RJD2's music can still be qualified as hip hop. But no matter, no doubt that's good music.

3 out of 5 stars A well-edited record collection........2003-11-14

I have to admit, I liked this EP more before I learned that the title track is a flagrant rip of Gershon Kingsley's "Hey Hey" -- all RJD2 did is slow it down a bit. For all the hype this guy's getting, no one's busting him on the apparently uncleared samples. A truly remarkable DJ would have done more to make his sources a little less obvious.

5 out of 5 stars Not a Full length Album...but accomplished nonetheless.......2003-11-04

Following the success of his phenomenally well crafted debut album "Deadringer", was never going to be easy, especially as he found himself with comparisons to "DJ Shadow". And so he's completely sidestepped the monumental task, by producing something that is more of a `remix' Ep with several new tracks and b-sides (with a second disk full of multimedia content). And it's here that by `Revisiting' his debut album and `reworking' the tracks that appeared on that album, Rjd2 maintains his deserved "DJ Shadow" comparisons and implements vividly sharp, musically focused, sonically multi-faceted tracks that push forward with their ingenuity & eclecticism....Track 5 ("Good Times Roll...Part 1") is easily as accomplished & outstanding as anything "Dj Shadow" has produced, and rocks with joyous dirty samples littered throughout. And it's again with such exceptional work as this, that the running order (just 10 tracks) simply isn't enough, and you find yourself occasionally watching the tracks whiz by, but then.....that's purely because of the incredible production ability displayed here.

4 out of 5 stars I'm feeling this joint...........2003-10-16

i like deadringer even more but some of the breakdowns on this album are great...definitely check it out.

. . _ Loki and Raided, a few years ago I was skeptical; i couldnt believe this album would come to life. It's just that the majority of the time the rap game changes more thoroughly than the setbacks that are an inevitable part of the business. Over the past six months or so, though, I've seen Loki hitting the keys, networking the internet getting this move ready, to put this album out and the label initiated. And Ignition has come through shinning. Properly titled, properly put together, all hooks beats and features.. Loki and Raided bring heat and a hard, smooth sound. Loki puts together some hooks that I can genuinely feel; he's far more versatile than I remember him being on Siccmade Muzicc. This album touches all of the ranges, hard hitting on some of the tracks and laid back on others. I'd received this album via the mail from Amazon not but two days ago and I cannot stop listening. The features are on point, NOT filler. Zagg comes tight, which is nice to hear -- Loki and Zagg on tracks together again. Overall this album ranges the experience you'd expect from a tight album, every track and verse, this is a good purchase. The album is worth alone getting for the battle rap Loki thrusts at Ja for the Identity Theft, but it has so much more.. Big ups to the Big Raided Loc, we down, brother. We down. Keep the faith, maintain the strength, thanks for the inspiration. Loki, I'm appreciating the album, Homie. It's been a long time coming and the final product is T I G H T -Kabol

5 out of 5 stars Ignition.......2007-02-07

It has been over three years since the release of the last X-Raided album, and over two years since loki's last effort, but this album was definitely worth the wait. This album boasts the best production EVER on an X-Raided album, as well as stellar performances from all lyricists involved. This is the first album to be released on Bloc*Star, X-Raided's new imprint.

1. Ignition: A great opening track, this song features production from Epik and verses from X-Raided, Loki, and newcomer TA.

2. The Merger. This song is a duet between X-Raided and Loki, featuring production from The Shape. This song has to be one of the catchiest songs in the X-Raided canon. With chorus work provided by D-Dubb (who some listeners may recognize from his work with Brotha Lynch Hung, most notably on the track "Refuse To Lose" and That's What I Said"), this track boast an almost orchestral sound, with low cellos and a string section providing the backdrop. Classic!!!!!!!!!

3. Recruits. Produced by DJ Epik, this track has a martial, almost militant feel, which works well for the subject matter. The Trauma Unit (Sav Sicc, Bleezo and Skari of C-Way) are introduced on this song, which features background vocals from Loki, NoLove and The Shape.

4. D.O.A. This is a second part to a previously released X-Raided track. Features production from M.I. Jezzus. X spits fire on this one.

5. The Mission Satement. Another stellar production by Epik. On this track, Loki, X-Raided and TA represent for Blocstar.

6. A Dirty Job. Produced by Jay Are, who provided much of the production on Loki's last lp, this track has a smooth, mellow feel that recalls a lot of the classic bay are music, however updated for the 2000's. All lyricists spit fire on this track, and Nicc Blacc provides a soulful chorus.

7. Street Life Revisited. Produced by Loki and Jay Are, this track is another instant classic. Nicc Blacc's singing on the chorus gives this the feeling of the soul anthems of yesteryear, while X-Raided and NoLove talk about growing up on the streets. Straight banger!

8. Live At The Speakeasy. Producer Loki uses horns and polyrhythmic drums to give this beat an urgent, uptempo vibe. This track features D-Dubb spitting an entire verse (!) as well as appearnces from Loki and Devious. Possible party anthem.

9. Voyeurs. Produced by The Shape, this track has definite commercial potential. Loki speaks about strippers and the scene involved, while Nicc Blacc provides a stellar chorus. This song has an alomost "Hyphy" feeling to it.

10. Riders Club. This song is a classic! X-Raided, Loki and NoLove all spit hardcore gangsta lyrics over a hard-hitting beat from The Shape. This song is another that features an almost "hyphy" sound, production-wise. Classic chorus too!

11. Trouble So Hard. This track opens with NoLove spitting some almost socially conscious lyrics, followed by verses from Loki and Bleezo. All three lyricists speak about society and politics, making this another classic. The Shape's production features bluesy pianos and blues vocals in the chorus.

12. Identity Theft. Jay Are provides a tense, cinematic beat for this track, on which Loki speaks about "a certain someone" who is trying to use his name. This track features some of the best battle-oriented lyrics yet from Loki. This song seems to be about Ja Rule, who has been saying in the press that his "New name" is Loki. Needless to say, Loki rips Ja apart on this track.

13. Incarceraided. !!!! This track is certainly something that fans have been waiting for. Featuring an almost autobiographical narrative from X-Raided, the lyrics speak about his case and the trials of his life. D-Dubb provides a catchy and soulful chorus that perfectly compliments the song.

14. Exit Strategy. Featuring production from G-Macc, this song finds Loki, Zagg, and G-Macc all spitting narrative verses. The delivery of all three lyricists works well in this context.

15. This is the last track on the album. The production, courtesy of Jay Are is a perfect, almost mournful, canvas for this track, on which many affiliates and friends of X-Raided send dedication to him. Loki also sings on the chorus, which adds the perfect blend of sentiment and sorrow.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Halloween .......2006-09-26

Fantastic collection of light-hearted Rock 'N' Roll songs for any party during October. These songs are catchy as well as hard to come by. Horror Hop is the companion to Monster Bop, another cd packed with a bunch of songs from the 1950s and 60s, perfect for Halloween parties. The songs were probably taken from actual records rather than the original source, but it still sounds pretty decent. Besides, where else are you going to find all these songs? All the songs are great. They even got Lon Chaney Jr. singing a song about monsters stealing Christmas presents from Santa. However they could have left out the song "The Zoo". Hearing a song about seeing rhinos, hippos and monkeys at the zoo doesn't exactly conjure up images of ghosts and graveyards in ones mind. But who cares? There are 30 other songs to play during your next Halloween party.

5 out of 5 stars before the Monster Mash there were great monster songs.......2000-10-02

If you ever wanted more than the `Monster Mash' then this CD will kick you in the teeth! It has 31 original tracks of monster songs that are pure 50's rock n roll. The cover is a colorful painting of the monster from "Curse of the Demon" 1957 (originally used for a Frank N. Stein & orchestra LP on Power Records 1964) and it comes with a booklet with a center fold poster of the movie, "Werewolf in a Girl's Dormatory" and a few photos of some of the artists. This is a generous collection and it is a companion to the MONSTER BOP CD (also on the BUFFALO BOP label from Germany) which has 30 more vintage monster rock n roll recordings. Unbelievably great. ... is an O.K. price for what you get, 70 minutes of monster songs most of which were recorded before the Monster Mash. The only regret you'll have if you buy this CD is that you didn't get the companion CD, MONSTER BOP, so get them both! ... Track Listing: BO DIDDLE IN THE JUNGLE - Tommy King...
