Customer Reviews:
Sublime.......2006-06-01
I came across thsi album by chance in a record store in LA during a short trip back in '95 or so. Dunnery has created a masterpiece that he will probably never equal or at least surpass. This is at the same time soulfull, poetic, and edgy. A comparison with Dylan is appropriate, although I feel that Dunnery's music here is more approachable and perhaps more honest. He has an expressive voice and the songs are unusual and smart, without being over contrived. Most of them slide down into the brain effortlessly. His guitar playing is fine too. His "Father & Son" is actually better than Cat Stevens'. "Too Much Saturn" is one of my favorite songs ever.
Soundtrack for My College Exploits.......2006-02-01
Along with the first Spacehog album, Supernova, Southern Culture on the Skids' Dirt Track Race, and Big Audio's P-Funk, this album formed the core of my last college year soundtrack. I was lucky enough to stumble into writing for Temple News, via its entertainment section. So I got lotsof bands and albums I may have never gotten (oh, yeah... Siberia is great, too). Anyway, "I Believe" and "48 Hours" are two of the best here, but that's only two amongst a full album of great tracks.
Better than Dylan and Lennon put together (I'm not kidding).......2005-07-07
What qualifies as good songwriting? It's impossible to tell anymore. The term singer/songwriter seems to be assigned to anyone and everyone nowadays who can strum a guitar chord. To make matters worse, all of these said musicians are proclaimed underrated, profound, endearing, honest, emotional, whatever buzz words critics use. I should buy stock in music critic clichés -- I could be filthy rich.
So how can you tell the cream of the crop from mere fluff? You can't. You need to stumble across stuff by accident, much like the way I heard Tall Blonde Helicopter. When Francis Dunnery released Fearless, I was somewhat intrigued by the songs that made their way to radio (that was a different time, now wasn't it?). Alas, my hearing of Fearless in its entirety didn't exactly whet my appetite for more Dunnery. I was content listening to...whatever it was I was listening to at the time.
Fast forward a few years and a college friend of mine lends me a copy of Tall Blonde Helicopter, a CD his parents won as a door prize at some party. They didn't want it, so they gave it to him. He let me borrow it. After hearing the album a second time, I was transfixed, in an almost unhealthy way.
Every singer/songwriter the world over wishes they had material that's 1/10th as good as what's on Tall Blonde Helicopter. Although Dunnery's melodies and quirky sense of humor appear to be a little much at times, there is very little that sets his songs apart from the Lennon/McCartney or Jagger/Richards back catalogue in terms of replay value.
Francis Dunnery plays all of the instruments, but this hardly feels like a ragged demo. Warmth and depth seem to seep out of these songs despite the one-man-band factor. The delivery may be glib at times, but the whole thing is so sugary and sweet that it won't even matter to you.
I could take time to highlight my favorite songs, but I really can't play favorites this time around. The whole thing is just...so...impressive.
File Under: Underrated.......2004-02-05
This is indeed another great overlooked album from the 90's. Francis Dunnery, to my mind, ranks right behind Richard Thompson as one of the greatest singer/songwriter/guitarists from "across the pond". His voice is a bit better than Thompson's, his style's a bit sunnier, and his songwriting is every bit as good. I'd definitely give Thompson the edge in the guitar department, but Dunnery is a fine instrumentalist in his own right. There are some standouts here, like the funny satire of new-age trends, "Too Much Saturn", and the richly rocking "In My Dreams". He does a nice cover of Cat Stevens' "Father and Son", too. Not all the songs here are instant classics, as reported elsewhere, but this is definitely worth adding to your collection, especially if you like smart, clever pop-rock songwriting.
One of the most under rated albums of all time!.......2003-10-07
All I can say is Wow! I first heard this album back in 1996 while working at a radio station, a year after its release and fell in love with it. "Sunshine" and "Too Much Saturn" are my favorites. I've heard a lot of music and this ranks in my top 25. A classic

This is even better than her first album, 'How to Steal the World'. Pure aural pleasure. If you like Bjork, Keli Ali or Portishead then place a chance on this!
so glad that I took a chance on this.......2005-12-30
I found this at a Tower records listening station and was hooked. Her voice is incredible. It's earthy and warm but has a smoothness that is great for listening to while you lounge around.
so glad that I took the chance.......2005-11-08
I completely agree with the first reviewer. This has an older, sophisticated sound, but still manages to sound modern and fresh.
I took a chance on this when I came across it at my local Barnes & Noble under the "new and notable" section. Is this ever notable. Jackie Joyces' voice is a thing of beauty, not entirely unlike Macy Gray's voice, who I am a big fan of, but with a more mature and polished sound (clearer and less drug-hazed sounding - sorry Macy).
I absolutely love the song "Angel City" as well. As soon as I sampled that song, I knew the CD was for me. Other standouts for me include "Jakarta Flatline", "Rivermouth", and "This Far Out". A few I liked less than others, but it was a great all around listening experience and I have gone back to this CD more than a few times.
I would highly recommend giving this a listen. You won't be disappointed.
Mix Billie Holiday, Eartha Kitt and late-night grooves..........2005-08-30
... and you'll get Helicopter Girl's latest release. I just got this album last night and fell in love with the title track "Angel City" on the first listen... Jackie Joyce (aka Helicopter Girl) has a unique voice reminiscent of older singers like Eartha Kitt and Billie Holiday. There is an interesting blend of musical styles here. It's sexy, after-hours music that has both interesting lyrics and an interesting blend of musical styles and instrumentation. I can't say that I love every cut, but it's nice to hear something different and unique, a bit avant-garde, yet classy without being down-right unlistenable. Take a chance and give Helicopter Girl a whirl-- I think (and hope) you'll be glad (as I was) that you did!

the seminal cocktail culture composer.......2004-07-05
Finally, a stateside reissue of the seminal cocktail culture composer Bob Thompson's landmark lounge album, The Sound of Speed, has been released on CD courtesy of those pop culture archeologists at Dionysus, and the tireless efforts of Thompson's son, Spenser. The brilliant Thompson, a contemporary of such celebrated and better known RCA mood music magicians like Juan Garcia Esquivel and Henry Mancini, is long overdue for popular and critical re-discovery, and this crucially cool LP is a perfect launching pad for this revival.
Recorded in Rome in 1960, The Sound of Speed may seem relatively syrupy in our current culture of hyper-frenetic bass beats and pulse-pounding urban rhythms, but this music hails from a totally different context and era: The Space Age, when rest and relaxation were as much a part of our perceived future as electronically enhanced convenience. While Bob Thompson was at the peak of his powers, a lifestyle of luxury was promised for all, from the stay-at-home mom to the working stiff to the corporate climber. The soothing, stirring orchestration on this collection conveys both inspiration and intoxication. Each track is devoted to a different mode of transportation, most incorporating (or "sampling") the actual mechanical sounds of the object in musical question.
The soaring rhapsody of "Star Fire" (Jet Plane) and the bouncy lushness of "Early-Bird Whirly-Bird" (Helicopter) have been heard before on lounge compilations, but the rest of the dozen tunes here will be beautiful new music to the lucky listener's ears. From the continental coolness of "La Vespa" (Motor Scooter) to the dreamy drama of "Sub-Manhattan Blues" (Subway Train) to the aquatic aural atmosphere of "Sea-Spray" (Speed Boats) to the cosmic blast of "Count Down" (Missile), Bob Thompson will take you for one wild, wondrous ride. The destination for each traveler is the same: the sanctuary of your own sonically soused soul.
Along with the original cover and liner notes, the CD package also includes excerpts from an interview yours truly did with Bob for the Fall 2002 issue of ATOMIC Magazine, in which he humbly acknowledges the resurgence of interest in his music with bemused appreciation. Here's to you, Mr. Thompson: cheers, and thanks for the bright, shiny, brand new musical memories. The 21st Century welcomes you!

Album Description
Harp 46 is an exciting contemporary instrumental trio emerging on the Seattle music scene. Comprised of Celtic harp, bass, and African Djembe drum, HARP 46 combines classical, jazz, folk and world influences in a novel contemporary instrumental sound. The harp's pristine elegance is enhanced by world rhythms and unexpected timbres. Soft textures, gently laid lines and lingering space between notes lend a minimalist quality to the work. Quite simply, the music of HARP 46 is for the sophisticated listener. Inspired and innovative, the music fairly floats. HARP 46 produces music capable of transporting the listener on fine designs of discipline and improvisation classically-inspired, then tinged with worldly influence.

Harp music for people who don't listen to harp music.......2004-04-12
Ever tap your toe and/or dance while listening to harp music? Ever listen to harp music at all? This CD is like nothing else I have heard, and I don't listen to much "new age" stuff myself, so I can't compare it to anything. I just know it's not "breezy" like a lot of new age music--there's substance here that will make you dance. Harp and drums--who would have thought? If you want elevator music you can tune out or fall to sleep to, don't buy this CD. It will make you listen closely, and it will repay close attention.
I love Harp 46!.......2004-02-14

Good luck finding something this unique again.......2005-09-03
This album may be difficult to find, perhaps because it was just too unconventional for the mainstream. If you're looking for a new sound, then please, go ahead and put out the extra cash for this brilliant album. Helicopter Girl's voice is a sort of dusky Billie Holiday. It is harsh, but soft at the same time. Her withdrawn but passionate expression just seems to draw me in.
The lyrics sound rather LSD inspired, but the interesting thing about them is that despite their random and weird nature, you somehow understand exactly what it is she's singing about. The music itself is a very unique spin on jazz, with melodies that somehow manage to be catchy while still being complex and far from formulaic. I doubt you will find any artist more distinctive than this one.
One to have within your collection.......2002-05-22
As I listened to this cd, several times, I found some of the songs not to my liking. However, it is such an eclectic ensamble, that I believe everyone would find this cd enjoyable. I liked the variety, and appreciated the exposure to different mucsic styles. I also like the mood that this cd set, even when I listened to one and thought, "oh, yuck, I don't like this. ", but I hung in and found appreciation. So, all in all, I like it and will share it with my friends. I am most definitely looking forward to future productions...I'm curious of what she will have to offer us music lovers!
First time hearing this lady.......2001-12-29
I first heard this lady on Rod Stewart's last album and was intrigued by her voice. I was a little disappointed by her album which didn't live up to the promise of her duet. However as a debut album I thought it was inventive, I especially liked the ending, and while some tracks I think missed their mark, overall I found it pretty ggod. Subsequent recordings will only get better in my opinion as she finds herself and develops her style. I can only agree with the comment that she sounds like Eartha Kitt in slow motion. I look forward to her next CD.
Inconsistent.......2001-12-09
This is a decent album. There are moments of real sophistication, such as 'Glove Compartment' and 'It's Not Fetish.' Jackie Joyce, a.k.a. Helicopter Girl has an interesting voice and it is best appreciated by people who like winsome female vocals.
That being said this album is not as consistent as I'd like it to be. Towards the end of the album the vocals get tiresome, and there aren't enough layers to the music to really make this sort of album one would want to listen to too often.
this woman has soul and a voice that's intoxicating.......2001-01-22
when i read reviews, sometimes i just want to know if it's like anything i already enjoy. helicopter girl has similarities to lamb, portishead, bjork, and eryka badu but is very very unique. her voice creeps up on you and makes you listen so carefully to what she's expressing. every song is powerful. it's jazzy, bluesy, and dancey. it's nice to have an album that other people ask about when they hear it.

The piece lasts just under 30 minutes, which is just about the amount of time you'd need in order to explain this unusual, thoroughly baffling recording from avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. Created for a string quartet, the Helicopter Quartet requires four players to be whisked into air via ... you guessed it, four helicopters, where they perform Stockhausen's short piece (repetitive and heavy on the tremoli) in flight, linked via microphones and monitors to one another. The rotor blades of the helicopters help keep a steady, unrelenting pace, and the Arditti perform with plenty of energy and as much bow attack as you can fit into a helicopter cabin, but the piece itself lacks the magic of Stockhausen's best works (for starters, check out the legendary Kontakte). Fans of the composer (and sonic weirdness) will probably love this unsettling (and somewhat creepy) composition, but the rest of us will either want a little less (or perhaps a lot more) turbulence in our performance art. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
The only interesting part.......2007-06-29
In my humble opinion, the only truly interesting bit in the entire string quartet is when the cellist falls out of his helicopter in the third movement, and must be rescued from the craggy rocks below. The sound of blood splattering against the helicopter blades adds a pizzicato-like effect that compensates for the incessant chopping sound that humans unanimously associate with helicopters (otherwise known as "choppers"). This feature of the piece must be responsible for its infrequent performances, as it must be agreed that breaking one's neck for the sake of this risible member of the so-called musical avant garde does not exactly qualify as a career-advancing move.
Be Honest.......2004-01-25
How many of you think nothing of listening to music in the car, on the bus or in public with headphones, or even at home with the dog barking and the neighbor's lawnmower in the background? In other words, anywhere but the otherwise silent environment the composer surely had in mind when he wrote the piece. All Stockhausen has done is add the inevitable background noise, in a controlled manner and blending harmoniously with the instruments.
Unique.......2003-06-03
The "Helicopter String Quartet" comes from Stockhausen's opera, "Mittwoch aus LICHT" (Wednesday from Light), and is characteristic of the many new horizons this famous composer has been exploring in his LICHT cycle of operas (7 in all). Most of the reviews here have lamented the unremittent tedium and monotony of the music, and yes, the piece is very slow in moving and some parts feel repetitive to the extreme. In fact, the uniqueness of this piece can most likely only be experienced in a live performance (which, for obvious reasons, is something of a rarity) as one would be able to SEE as well as hear the performance. However, this disc does its best to capture the spirit and sound of a unique work. The String Quartet is 30-minute long series of string tremolos based on complicated formulae set forth by Stockhausen for the entire LICHT cycle. There are three themes (Michael, Eve, and Lucifer) and each is heard over and over as the quartet progresses. Also blended with these tremolos is the sound of the helicopters' blades rotating in the background. For a good introduction to the unique sound of this piece, head to Stockhausen's official site... where you can find, on the Multimedia page, a five minute sound clip of the Helicopter String Quartet from the beginning of the ascent into the middle of the introduction. This will give you a firm idea of exactly what is on this disc, BEFORE you buy it!
A performance concept with potential, but a pointless CD........2002-09-18
This 1992-93 Stockhausen composition/conception is pretty interesting. In June of 1995, in three performances, the renowned Arditti String Quartet was lifted into the air in four helicopters (one performer per chopper). Their respective performances were broadcast onto giant television screens and through speakers, situated in an audio-visual hall as well as outdoors. In addition to watching the performers on screen, the outdoor audience could see the helicopters hovering roughly six kilometers above them. At the end of the performance, cameras followed the musicians and pilots from the helicopters to the hall, where they were introduced to the audience - an entrance to put just about any rock stars' to shame!
There seems to be a lot to talk about here. The performance sets up an interesting relationship between performer and audience, separating the audience by a distance of six kilometers from the performers they've converged to watch and listen to. The outdoor screens and the placement of the helicopters themselves places avant garde performance into a public and real-time sphere. It lends an unmistakable sense of awe and spectacle to the performance. Etc., etc. But everything that's interesting to me about this concept is tied up in the idea of performance, and unfortunately does not translate, frankly, at all to home listening.
Worse, this CD does not record the aforementioned performance. Rather, the composition written for this performance was recorded in a studio at a later date, and then a canned recording of the slightly irregular hum of spinning helicopter rotor blades was added in the background. So this CD isn't even a document of an interesting idea, but simply a rather straight-forward string quartet recording (on the virtues of the actual composition I can't very well speak, I'm not exactly a "trained ear") muddied up with some fairly annoying helicopter noise (the musical appeal of the rotor noise seems minimal, at least in this recording, and to me it is the least interesting thing the helicopters have to offer). Kind of a pointless release, I'm afraid. The worst of it is that recordings of two of the three June 1995 performances do exist in the Stockhausen Foundation archives. So why not at least release one of those rather than this utter failure?
Continually misunderstood.......2001-09-02
Stockhausen's music has been continually misunderstood by the classical public, and by the "unclassical" people as well. His music is mostly referred to by its superficial effects, the "crazy sounds" that disturb most of the classical public and that inspired rock-pop-techno listeners, and free jazz improvisers as well. Given the originality of the means required for its performance, the "Helikopter Quartet" has good chances to be Stockhausen's most misunderstood composition. Most of the classical public did not listen to this piece but after reading some (often negative) review in the newspapers they refer to it as "just more noise by Stockhausen" (after reading several reviews in European newspapers I have the impression that some reviewers did not really listen to the piece, just had it as background noise when writing - a Swedish reviewer was apparently more interested on the reaction of his cat to the music), and the other public is probably disappointed, as this composition is definitely not "crazy" enough for them. Paraphrasing Mr. Babbit, who cares if, or how, they listen?
