An unusual collection of only 16 songs (14 hits and two new ones) from a group that has written more prom themes than any band in history, The Heart of Chicago showcases the group's ability to sing about love from every phase of their career. (Not sure what else they might've sung about, but their anti- war compositions don't register here). "Baby, What a Big Surprise," "Feelin' Stronger Everyday," and "25 or 6 to 4" are those songs that have never left the radio. The digital remastering might be triumph of sorts; however, the absence of liner notes to accompany them leaves the band's story sadly untold. --Rob O'Connor

THIS RED COMPILATION ALBUM IS FROM THE HEART OF CHICAGO. PART 1 OF 2........2007-04-02
CHICAGO will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for mixing some hard Rock n' Roll with Jazz and for including their own personal horn section in the band. CHICAGO has been entertaining audiences the world over since 1969 despite changing band personnel through the years. CHICAGO was such a talented and versatile band that the band could play Hard Rock or Jazz, then with a snap of the finger, the band would quickly change their music tempo and style into a more beautifully slower and mellower song. When Robert Lamn, Leo Loughnane, James Pankow, Walter Parazaider, the late great Terry Kath, Peter Cetera, Danny Seraphine, Bill Champlin, Jason Scheff, Tris Imbeden and Keith Howland met up and joined forces, CHICAGO was born and would never look back. CHICAGO would release many great albums and hit singles through the years from the period of 1967 to 1997. This legendary "Red " compilation album would be one of the results and one of the many CHICAGO compilation albums that would surface in the 70's and 80's. In My opinion, "THE HEART OF CHICAGO 1967-1997" compilation album is one of the best CHICAGO compilation albums ever assembled. This legendary "Red" compilation album is also a true testament of the sheer genius and musical creativity of eleven extremely talented individuals and a fine fitting tribute to a great band that was truly indeed, ahead of their time.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of CHICAGO speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary "Red" compilation album Volume 1 begins with the slow and beautifully crafted mellow love song "You're The Inspiration," the slow and beautifully orchestrated acoustic song "If You Leave Me Now," the fast vintage CHICAGO mellow Rocker "Make Me Smile," the slow and beautifully written CHICAGO love song "Hard Habit To Break," the vintage CHICAGO trademark mild Rocker "Saturday In The Park," one of the most beautiful and well organised slow acoustic songs ever, "Wishin' You Were Here," the beautifully slow soothing mellow Rocker that was produced by LENNY KRAVITZ, "The Only One," the slow and smooth piano number "Colour My World," the slow and beautifully synthesized Rocker "Look Away," the beautifully slow and uplifting song "Here In My Heart," the forever vintage CHICAGO trademark beautifully slow mild song "Just You 'N' Me," the incredible vintage CHICAGO trademark song with the intro and the horn section in full force, "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?," the beautifully slow synthesized mild Rocker "Will You Still Love Me?," one of my most favorite CHICAGO songs of all-time, the forever vintage CHICAGO trademark acoustic Rocker "Beginnings" and one of the most beautiful slow turned fast blazing horn section CHICAGO Rocker with the original Rockin' ending in its original form and the way it was truly intended to sound, "Hard To Say I'm Sorry / Get Away." I would like to make a honorable mention of two songs that did not make the final cut on either Volume I or Volume II compilation albums but should have been included. They are the songs entitled "Lowdown" and "Alive Again." END OF THE "RED" COMPILATION ALBUM VOLUME ONE.
Overall, this is one hell of a "Red" legendary Compilation album Volume I worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a diehard CHICAGO fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners to the sound and music of CHICAGO, I would definitely purchase this "Red" compilation album Volume I and the "Blue" compilation album Volume II. However, you might want to research further into the past CHICAGO greatest hits compilation albums before you purchase the right compilation album that is right for you. Either way you choose, I promise you that you will not regret it nor will you ever be sorry that you bought them.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary "Red" compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album has definitely already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great CHICAGO compilation album that no music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.
In closing, CHICAGO has continued to release great albums and perform before sold-out audiences the world over for many years which has lasted to this very day. With that in mind, the band would enjoy all of the fruits that the good life had to offer from the 70's onward. However, the band's fame and success through the 70's would come at a high price with the band's worst tragedy. CHICAGO guitarist Terry Kath would pass away on 23 January 1978 as a result of an accidental gunshot wound to the head. CHICAGO would still persevere and move forward. CHICAGO is a great legendary band that has already forever left their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Robert, Lee, James, Walter, the late great Terry, Peter, Danny, Bill, Jason, Tris and Keith. TERRY KATH LIVES. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. CHICAGO RULES. R.I.P TERRY KATH, Born 31 January 1946, Died 23 January 1978 at age 32. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

Essential Chicago - For The Non-Fan.......2006-06-23
But I cannot give this 5 stars, because it is true that there are too many Chicago compilations. I do love the bonus tracks. In my opinion, the present line-up of Chicago (with Keith Howland) is the best ever. Maybe in some other review I'll explain why.
Yes, yes - BUY THIS CD!
REMASTER and ADD a Few SONGS.......2004-05-20
The Chicago album I was waiting for........2003-12-12
This album has a great mix of songs that only showcase a tenth of what this band and its members have done in their long careers.
The re-mastering is excellent, and that is one of the greatest gifts a music lover gets when buying a CD these days.

THE PERFECT COMPLEMENT OF VOLUME 1.......2007-05-07
THE BLUE VOLUME II COMPILATION ALBUM IS ALSO FROM THE HEART OF CHICAGO. PART 2 OF 2........2007-04-08
"THE HEART OF CHICAGO 1967-1998 Volume 2" "Blue" compilation album is the continuation of the original Volume 1 "Red" compilation album which bears the same "HEART OF CHICAGO" name. For me personally, it has been a real honor watching CHICAGO grow, mature and improve their musical abilities through the years. CHICAGO has recorded and released so many great albums along with so many fantastic hit songs that it was only natural that another volume would be released a year later after the first volume. In my opinion, it would have been better to release this whole Volume 1 & 2 compilation album series into a 2-CD set. Despite my opinion, Volume 2 really kicks and takes right where Volume 1 left off. It is also my opinion that Volume 2 is without a doubt, a true testament of the creative brilliance and musical genius of CHICAGO and a fine fitting tribute to a legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of CHICAGO speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary "Blue" compilation album Volume 2 begins with the powerful and fast trademark CHICAGO Rocker "Dialogue (Part 1 & 2)," the beautiful CHICAGO Rocker with a lot of energy, "Old Days," the slow and beautifully synthesized "All Roads Lead To You," the slow and soothing orchestrated "Love Me Tomorrow," the beautiful acoustic and orchestrated Peter Cetera composition "Baby, What A Big Surprise," the all out synthesized song "You're Not Alone," the slow and beautifully crafted CHICAGO trademark song "What Kind Of Man Would I Be," one of the most beautiful slow love songs ever written, "No Tell Lover," the soulful song with a good sound and beat, "Show Me A Sign," the forever CHICAGO trademark slow mellow orchestrated Rocker "(I've Been) Searchin' So Long," the breathtaking mellow Rocker "Call On Me," the beautiful synthesized mellow Rocker "I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love," the slow and beautiful CHICAGO mellow Rocker "Feelin' Stronger Everyday," the CHICAGO Rocker with a kick "Stay The Night," the vintage CHICAGO a*s kicking Rockin' rendition of the SPENCER DAVIS GROUP classic "I'm A Man" and the CHICAGO orchestrated Rocker that kicks a*s, "25 Or 6 To 4." As I also stressed on the Volume 1 review, I would like to make a honorable mention of two songs that did not make the final cut on either Volume I or Volume II compilation albums but should have been included. They are the songs entitled "Lowdown" and "Alive Again." END OF THE "BLUE" COMPILATION ALBUM VOLUME TWO.
Overall, this is one hell of a "Blue" legendary compilation album Volume II worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a diehard CHICAGO fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners to the sound and music of CHICAGO, I would definitely purchase this "Blue" compilation album Volume II along with the "Red" Volume I album. However, you might want to research further into the past CHICAGO greatest hits compilation albums before you purchase the right compilation album that is right for you. Either way you choose, I promise you that you will not regret it nor will you ever be sorry that you bought them.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary "Blue" compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album has definitely already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great CHICAGO compilation album that no music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.
In closing, CHICAGO has persevered and gotten better with age as the years have gone by. I really truly hope that CHICAGO will continue for many more years to come and I truly wish them many more years of success. So here's to you Robert, Lee, James, Walter, the late great Terry, Peter, Danny, Bill, Jason, Tris and Keith. TERRY KATH LIVES. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. CHICAGO RULES. R.I.P TERRY KATH, Born 31 January 1946, Died 23 January 1978 at age 32. The Heart of Chicago volume II.......2005-08-20
So I went home that night and asked my dad what band did the song "25 or 6 to 4". He told me a story about how Chicago was his favorite band growing up and how he was in horn band playing Chicago songs in the early 1970s.
So I went out and bought "IX" and "Heart of Chicago volume II"
I thougt "Dialoque (pt 1 @ 2)", "All Roads Lead To You" , "Call on Me" , "Feelin Stronger Every Day" , "I am a Man" and, "25 or 6 to 4" are the best tracks.
I am really not a fan of 80s chicago at all. If your just looking for a greatest hits Chicago album this is not the one to buy. If your a fan and you want the two new songs "All Roads Lead to You" , and "Show Me a Sign" buy it. Look for used copy first.
I am 28 I do not remember Chicago ever being popular. I am Punk Rocker who owns all the Chicago albums.
Back for seconds!.......2004-05-21
But this CD, The Heart of Chicago Vol. II, is living proof that some artists can go beyond the norm. Chicago has been making great music since 1967 and they've had more success than most artists could ever dream of, but somehow they remain very underrated. Why are they not in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame yet!?? The first Heart of Chicago CD featured the best known tracks from Chicago's history, but there wasn't enough room for many of the band's best.
Heart of Chicago Vol. II has most of the lesser known hits that you seldom, if ever hear on the radio. As you listen through them, you'll scratch your head and wonder why the DJs never play most of these songs anymore. I'm only 23, so it may not be a surprise that I can't recall ever hearing the catchy "Stay The Night" on the radio (but I've learned to love it!); listening to "What Kind Of Man Would I Be?" (my favorite!) makes me feel old, on the other hand, because I remember when it was new, but I don't think I've heard it played this millennium on the airwaves. "Old Days" is full of nostalgic lyrics that could be a representation of what many fans of 'old' music think. Take us back to the old days when most of the new music was worth hearing more than once!
Myself, I'm usually not a big fan of artists including many new songs on compilations, but Chicago's are pretty good, especially "All Roads Lead To You". I bet it could have been a top 40 hit had it been released. I thought that Heart of Chicago Vol. 1 would've been plenty of Chicago for me, even though this one had "Baby What A Big Surprise", "Old Days", and even the overlooked "You're Not Alone". But then I listened to a clip of some of the others, like "Stay The Night" and "What Kind Of Man Would I Be?" and decided that I wanted to add it to my collection. Whether you're a seasoned veteran of Chicago's music or a clueless newcomer who wants to sample their music, I fully recommend adding both volumes of The Heart of Chicago to your library.
A Better Picture.......2002-03-26
The CD begins with two of Chicago's best, but lesser known songs. "Dialogue" seems to have just as much meaning now, after the Lewinsky scandal and 9-11, as it did when it was first released. "Old Days" is a good follow-up no matter what generation you belong to.
The tunes sandwiched in between are some of the better but lesser known ballads. "What Kind of Man Would I Be?" is one of the few Chicago hits that truly showcases the talent of Jason Scheff, the underated Peter Cetera replacement, both as a singer and a songwriter. One of the new songs "Show Me a Sign" is proof that the band members can still write good music.
The CD also contains classics like "Love Me Tommorrow", "Baby What a Big Suprise" and "(I've Been) Searchin' So Long." I recommened this purchase if you don't have any Chicago records in your collection. Chicago fans should enjoy this one as well.

Excellent, slightly different outing from Koko Taylor.......2005-06-04
What the hell is this? Has the Queen of Blues gone soft? Is this a pop record?
Well, no. This is a bit different from most of Taylor's albums, which are usually straight-ahead blues outings with lots of grit and not a whole lot of finesse, but it is far from a pop record.
"From the Heart of a Woman" includes Koko Taylor's magnificent take on Etta James' classic soul ballad "I'd Rather Go Blind", complete with some tremendous, understated lead guitar playing by Criss Johnson, as well as a great, funky "Keep Your Hands Off Him", a swinging "Never Trust A Man", and numerous other highlights.
And the band is top notch. Harpist Billy Branch lends a hand on two numbers, and pianist Bill Heid contributes mightly to the swinging R&B-groove of songs like "If You Got A Heartache" and "Sure Had A Wonderful Time Last Night", and the two guitarist (Sammy Lawhorn is the other) sizzle on the slow grind of "Thanks, But No Thanks".
This is one of the most interesting and musically diverse items in Koko Taylor's catalogue, and fans of her ought to grab a copy right away. Casual soul and R&B-fans should take heed as well.
4 1/2 stars. Highly recommended.

Chicago Female Blues Never Had It So Good!.......2001-12-03
Cause she's been there, done that!
Koko is a Queen. A blues Queen that is. With her deep, throaty and powerful blue voice. My ears and soul are truly moved. As if they just weren't sitting in the right place before she pelted into the room.
Stand out tracks for me are "I'd rather go blind" which is classic pain blues all the way. "Never trust a man" which is the classic done wrong by a man, well her friend was at least. Don't think the album is all downside though. Koko rips up the place and you will get a splinter from foot stomping on the juke joint floor on "If walls could talk."
All in all this is a release to own. The woman to man ratio in blues is astounding. But, Koko on this release proves that she can stand alone and doesn't need a guitar or a man!
