Husky-voiced Billie Myers was discovered in a London club by a producer who saw her dancing and suggested that if she could sing as well as she moved her hips, she should give him a call. The seemingly tacky pickup line was actually a legitimate business proposition, and three years later Myers has a major-label debut to show for it. Produced by Desmond Child (not the initial dance-club Casanova, in case you were wondering), Growing Pains is a standard-issue MOR rock record, clinging to every plodding '80s aesthetic in the book. Smoldering guitar chords, synthetically programmed drum rhythms, and big splashy choruses earmark the disc, while Myers does her best to sound like a predictable cross between Alanis Morissette and Joan Armatrading. On "A Few Words Too Many," she conjures the indistinct balladry of John Waite, while on "Tell Me" she gets "exotic," thanks to the accompaniment of a flute and sitar. Sgt. Pepper, this ain't. The funk-lite of "The Shark and the Mermaid" is slightly less annoying, but it's too little, too late in an album that willingly redefines the standards of blandness. --Aidin Vaziri

3 out of 5 stars I like the first song..........2007-01-17

Well i only like one song off the whole CD unfortunately. Bought it for my girlfriend and she agrees... only good track is Kiss the Rain. In my opinion of course.

5 out of 5 stars In the Rough..........2006-07-19

...I can only echo what many of the other reviewers have said: Billie Myers has an amazing voice. It's not your every day over-produced and polished one either. This album is incredible and I'm still surprised, almost ten years later, that it wasn't bigger than it was. But maybe that's a good thing, huh? A Few Words Too Many makes me cry every time, The Shark and The Mermaid is candy for the ears and imagination, and I'm also pretty fond of "Don't Shout" and "Mother, Daughter, Sister, Lover". Kiss the Rain is what made me buy it, the rest stands on it's own. It's ultimately singable, and the perfect music for a rainy day around the house, or a long drive in the car.

5 out of 5 stars TEMPEST'S EXPLODE.......2005-09-02

She's is not just a Rain, She's a complete Storm a in this cd is clear...Her voice is strong, the lyrics are honest and really i can enjoy every second of her music, "KISS THE RAIN" "A FEW WORDS TOO MANY" ""YOU SEND ME FLYING" "TELL ME" and my personal favourite " THE SHARK AND THE MERMAID" makes me realized that Billie Myers is an awesome singer, i was searching for GROWING,PAINS for long time, and now i'm lucky enough to have it. So my advice is, yes...go and buy it.

3 out of 5 stars ..........2004-03-21

It wasn't as good as I expected. 'Kiss The Rain' is still the best track...I think Myers needs to expand her horizon lyrically before she can be considered an amazing artist. Still good though.

5 out of 5 stars Constant Companion.......2003-08-07

There are very few cd's out there that I can listen to over and over again without getting sick of them. Even fewer that I can out down for a long time and then come back to even more in love with them. Billie Myers has a great voice, and there isn't a person out there who won't be moved by "Kiss the rain" or "a few words too many" at least once in their life!

Product Description

This is pure corn-fed discontent. Former Iowa resident Arecee releases his second record, "Beating a Dead Horse", under NYC's Collekt Records in Brooklyn, New York. His dark melodic beats and thick delivery are a refreshing alternative to today's bubblegum thug rap and purist hip-hop. On the track titled 'Breathe Deep' we hear a glimpse of a tragic past romance gone sour while the up-beat 'Round and Round' features hip-hop heavyweight Supastition. In 'Life is Cartoons,' Arecee proclaims that "hip-hop is stupid"; after watching MTV, I couldn't agree more. Lush self produced beats and deeply personal lyrics make this release a breath of fresh air in today's copycat music industry. Arecee's first release, "Direction for Children" featuring Sage francis, is currently in stores.

if it walks, talks, and quacks like good hiphop well it must be. don't even think about it. just buy it. arecee's second official release shows what hard work and dedication bring to the struggling sound of current hip POP. if you need respite from the inexplicable crap flooding the scene and stinkin up the charts, this is your album.

5 out of 5 stars Simplesmente o melhor........1999-07-26

Este é o melhor álbum do gênero que já ouvi em toda a minha vida! Toda a emoção é transmitida com muita clareza e suavidade. Ótima pedida, especialmente se você já está de saco cheio de axé, pagode e o escambau.

4 out of 5 stars Kiss the Rain kisses the heart!.......1999-06-28

For anyone who has ever cried thinking about a far off loved one, or has ever known heart-breaking longing, Kiss the Rain will take you back to that bittersweet feeling. Close your eyes and listen to the lyrics, and remember a place, a person, and a time from your past.

Billie Myers is an incredible artist. The album is well worth purchasing.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars excellent recordings.......2005-04-06

i haven't heard chapman in years, yup, not since the 70s, so i thought i would take a chance on this cd. they're early recordings, mostly solo, mostly live. i was very surprised at how good the performances were and the great sound quality. if you like chapman's work, this is a worthy cd to own. if you're not sure, it's a good place to start. i see there are a lot of used copies, cheap. not too sure why, as this is some good stuff. there is also a volume 2 out that is equally as good.

4 out of 5 stars MC - the first fifteen years.......2000-08-31

Most people consider Michael Chapman's albums from the first half of the seventies as his best work, so there must be some humor in the title Growing Pains, which provides an overview of the first fifteen years (1966-1980) of his musical career. The sixteen tracks are divided evenly in studio and live tracks and all tracks of this nearly 74-minute cd haven't been available before, neither on vinyl nor on cd. The first four studio tracks from Fairview, Hull predate his first official album Rainmaker at least two years, the last four tracks are from 1980, but for me they are much more interesting to hear than his 1980-album Looking for Eleven, although there's a distinct move to pop to be heard here also. The live recordings are from 1969 and 1971 and include MC-classics like It Didn't Work Out, Wrecked Again, Naked ladies & Electric Ragtime and a beautiful interpretation of Tim Hardin's Reason to Believe. There's also an almost 15-minute version of A Scholarly Man. The collection shows the development of MC in his most interesting years. It's a safe investment to get to know this excellent guitar player and singer, as it is all material that wasn't published before, and fits nicely besides BBC Sessions 69-75, a magnificent live-set. At last the interest in Michael Chapman seems te be growing and this record could do a good job in making it grow faster. Highly recommended and file under whatever you want to.

1 out of 5 stars The Music hall version.......2001-11-27

This sounds like a revue rather than a coherent musical comedy. One can't help but feel that the forces involved with this project didn't take it too seriously since Rochester doesn't even appear on the recording (he had a prior engagement!) and the liner notes are given over mainly to explaining why the work never appeared on the West End.

Even considering the age of the recording, the singers sound weak and/or wobbly. Buy this as an historical curiosity, but don't expect an uplifting, polished, professional experience. For that, you need the Gordon/Caird Broadway version.

      4 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2001-10-11

This musical has beautiful music mixed with sad tones and lovely harmony. The singers portray their characters flawlessly with the emotion they sing in their songs, from sadness to happiness. I believe this musical is a joy to listen to and will fill a place in any musical theater's person's heart.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money.......2001-09-05

The reason why I purchased this item is because I wanted to compare it to the Paul Gordan musical. I was sadly disappointed with this 60's version that tried to make Jane Eyre a comedy rather than a dark and gothic musical that the novel portrays. I tried to listen to a full song, but couldn't stand it and turned it off. From what I have just listened to, the show doesn't equal the newest Jane Eyre musical at all.
