Mississippi's 3 Doors Down will forever be known as the "Kryptonite" band--a reference to the runaway hit from their debut disc, The Better Life--but not for a lack of trying on their part. Away from the Sun is pretty much everything one could want from a contemporary American rock record--terrifically catchy melodies, soaring choruses, meaty playing, and lyrics that reach for meaning. In other words, a disc crafted with radio in mind. The title track and album opener "When I'm Gone" are grand, wide-screen suites with big guitar and even bigger themes, while "Here Without You" is a fat, earnest weeper Bono would envy. In fact, there's nary a clunker in the bunch, although a certain sameness pervades the band's writing, a point exacerbated by vocalist Brad Arnold's everyman contralto. Still, 3 Doors Down juggle the hard/soft dynamic deftly, alternately recalling Stone Temple Pilots, Creed, Train, and their ilk. --Kim Hughes

5 out of 5 stars Away From Originality.......2007-05-03

I've listened to 3 Doors Down for about 2 years now and their songs never get old. Songs such as "Here Without You" and "Changes" are more than songs that sound awesome; they are songs with lyrics that people can relate to for it describes situations and emotions that many of us face daily. Each song has it's own share of meanings and 3 Doors Down compiled music and emotion together into one pleasing form. Their work is inspiring not only muscially but also emotionally.

4 out of 5 stars For a follow up - its a bit of a letdown.......2007-01-31

Well, if you've listened to the 'The Better Life', then you realise how difficult it is for a band to make such a success of a follow up in their second album as they did in the first.
I was a little disappointed with 'Away from the Sun', it was less rocky and the tunes didn't seem to appeal as much to me as the ones in 'The Better Life' did. One song that does stick out from the rest of the album is 'Here Without You'. I was breathless when I heard this one, didn't actually know what to say but amazing.
'Here Without You' is the song that makes the Album as popular as it is, and if I were to think about buying this album now, I would just for that one song. For every '3 Doors Down' fan, its like law, you have to buy every album!!
If your a newcomer to '3 Doors Down' then buy 'The Better Life' first - its a much better album, or even the third album 'Thirteen Days'.

5 out of 5 stars 3 Doors Down.......2007-01-17

Excellent mix from an excellent band. Every song perfectly executed. No cursing or explicet lyrics. Just good old rock and roll.

1 out of 5 stars What were these guys thinking? .......2006-10-21

I just got done listening to away from the sun. WTF! This cd sucks beyond sucks. *hucks it out the window* I figured these guys would do better then the better life guess not. All the songs are about the same. Those of you who like the album title track......may have mercy for you. There's no greatness to it. I agree completely with the other reviewers. That it has no originality, lyrics are garbage, oh and when brad arnold is "singing" on the track I feel you...he mentions the new title for the next album "another 700 miles" which shows the album is a sellout. yeah another 700 miles and we will fall asleep at the wheel to this [...]. I can understand people liking the tracks chosen for the radio...but as far as album wise. It's no good.

2 out of 5 stars The beginning of a slump in both sound and a rejection of their old fans.......2006-08-11

When I first heard 3 doors down 'the better life' I thought it was an amazing cd and still do to this day. When I heard a new album was coming I was so excited but when I got it and played it my heart sank. This ladies and gentlemen is a sellout cd, gone is their old heavier sound and lyrics and thus they made this cd more mainstream with tracks like 'here without you.' This cd would be good to listen to if you were VERY VERY VERY depressed. Its really hard to listen to this cd all the way through without wanting to turn it off. Still theres a few good tracks on here like 'When Im Gone' Going down in flames, Sarah Yellin and changes. I think if your around 16 years old or younger and are going through that omg Im so lost wtf someone help me then youll like this otherwise stay clear, better yet pick up the better life and listen to 3dd at their best and heaviest.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-09

'The HYMN-a word derived from the Greek 'hymnos'-has been defined as 'a term of unknown origin applied from ancient times to a wide variety of songs in honor of gods, heroes or notable men.'
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hymns for every one.......2002-12-01

As I have said already..I am from espiscopal church..these my songs are well know by me...these songs give encouragement when it seems that all hope is lost..these are tunes that are well received....they are also very simple for the every day person to gain strength from day to day..they will become your daily prayer.....

5 out of 5 stars Super Praise!.......2000-06-10

Praise The Lord offers the listener traditional hymns in the English/British tradition. the clarity of the voices make it possible for the listener to follow the words distinctly. The organ soars as accompaniment. the CD provides organ and choral quality for the novice and the experienced musician.

5 out of 5 stars They just rock.......2006-11-07

What can I say have had this CD for a couple of years and it just rocks saw them in concert so have to say the CD does sound better, they have a good studio crew. Honestly, saw Nickleback with them and they blew them away but in the same category they are a good addition to your collection do it just get it!!

3 out of 5 stars Good album but rather redundant.......2005-10-17

A good album with lots of emotion and fairly good musicianship. Good tunes like here without you and away from the sun are the high points. This band is a bit redundant but holds on to keep me interested. It's hard to find much variety from song to song. Overall, okay album and I tend to listen to it quite a bit.

5 out of 5 stars One of my fave CD's that I own.......2004-05-27

Words cannot describe how much I love this album! Most people would agree 'When I'm Gone' & 'Here Without You' are some really good songs. However songs such as 'The Road I'm On', 'Changes' & 'Away From The Sun' are just some of the notable mentions. Then again its hard to single out just some songs. From song number 1 down to the hidden track at the end, they are all great.

A must buy....Just my 2 cents worth :)

4 out of 5 stars American Pride.......2003-11-04

Away From the Sun gives hope to the fact that there is still some quality music being produced that isn't prepackaged crapola. 3 Doors Down turns out a very heartfelt album here steeped in their trademark guitar riffs, bending harmonies and somber thoughtful lyrics that make you want to sing along !! 3DD definitely avoids the sophomoric jinx with tunes like "Here Without You", "Running Out of Days", "Away from the Sun" and of course the tune that has become an anthem for our troops overseas "When I'm Gone" !! I haven't been this jazzed about a "southern" rock band since Drivin' & Cryin'...and these guys have the same energy, their own distinctive sound and tremendous musicianship!! These guys belt out high quality rock that carries a distinctive sound that you can be proud to have in your collection.

3 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 stars -- Nothin' like a nice serving of 3DD.......2003-10-08

3 Doors Down's latest album Away From The Sun is a good piece of work. There are conscious lyrics, exceptional guitar work, and, of course, stellar vocals from Brad Arnold.

Things start off on the right foot with the leadoff single "When I'm Gone", and after that comes the introspective title track. Then it's on to "The Road I'm On", which, incidentally, may replace "Be Like That" as being my favorite song from them. And their latest song, "Here Without You", is a ballad that is sure to be a hit with their female fans, but it may have to grow on their male fans. I like the song already, though.

Why only 3-1/2 stars? Well, I really wasn't a big fan of the songs toward the end of the album. "Changes" isn't exactly my favorite song, and the production of "Sarah Yellin'" is really disorganized. Also, "Going Down In Flames" sounds like it was thrown together at the last minute.

But this is still a good album, and the hidden bonus track reminds you why you picked it up it the first place. I'll be looking forward to their next album.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2007-03-05

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Americans in London.......2006-03-09

The recording is excellent and replaces my old 78 recordings which I transferred to tape some years ago. But they have that horrible hissing noise which spoils my enjoyment of them.
It is to be observed that although the cast is American, the orchestras and conductors are British (except for Debroy Sommers). I know qite a bot about Deboy Sommers and Lew Stone, but can anyone fill me in about Reginald Burston?
The CD is great. Thank you to Amazon for this.

5 out of 5 stars CD and DVD -- zamechatel'niye!.......2005-10-21

The local PBS channel featured Helmut Lotti's "From Russia With Love" for the recent pledge drive. They got my support! And I got this wonderful CD and equally wonderful DVD. Helmut Lotti has a superb voice and he sings these Russian songs with such passion! Remarkably, he does not speak Russian, but learned the lyrics phonetically. Here are some of my favorite folk songs: Polyushko polye, Cherniye ochi, Kalinka. And some popular Russian songs which made it to the American hit parade: Dorogoy dlinnoyu ("Those Were the Days, My Friend") and the English language rendition of "Dream Away" ("A Stranger in Paradise"). Helmut gives a sweet, personal touch to movie themes "From Russia With Love" and "Lara's Theme" and a poignant "Far East of the Sun." These latter are sung in English. The final stanza of "Far East," a song from the Siberian gulag, could bring tears to your eyes! The finale is the Russian National Anthem. This is one of the most beautiful and singable of all anthems. The pleasing music has recently been given new lyrics by its original composer. Helmut sings the updated version accompanied by the Red Army Ensemble. My only criticism of the CD: lyrics should have been provided for nonRussian speakers. But I'm certain a web-search could easily locate lyrics and translations. The DVD features the same wonderful songs, with videos of Russian villagers and Cossacks in traditional costume. Helmut's trip through Russia on the TransSiberia Railroad provides the backdrop to the musical DVD. Through his eyes you see the splendor of this awesome, huge country. I recommend watching the DVD to get a feel for the artist's own appreciation of Russia. You'll feel the love each time you listen to the CD!

This is OK. I much prefer Inquisition Symphony Metallica (Tribute) by Apocalyptica. I preferred the four cellos of Apocalyptica to the over use of the violin in the String Quartet Tribute. In my opinion this album would have been much better if they had brought the violin down an octave or two. As it is, the violin sounds too whiney. It's not that I do not like violins, I love Vanessa Mae and Hilary Hahn's work, it is just that this album is almost painful to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars A great tribute for easy listening..........2005-03-10

This is quite an amazing tribute to 3 Doors Down if you're looking for a relaxing version of American Rock & Roll. It didn't blow me away, but I did find it surprisingly good. Very good. Just don't expect to be rockin' to this, because, well, it's a string tribute, meaning violins, cellos, ect... It's meant to be soothing and relaxing.

I'm quite a big fan of both 3 Doors Down and the String Quartet Tributes, and I have to say that this is one of the finest tributes they have done. The tribtes are pretty much on que with the original songs, so you'll pretty much be able to distinguish which songs are which from the beginning. You might even want to sing to it.

I'm not going to do a song by song review, because they're all great. Some are better than others, but it's a great tribute overall. My favorite songs, though, are "Kryptonite", "Loser", and "Here Without You." I think those are the most well done songs on the album. I must note, though, that it's pretty much necessary to know the songs beforehand. Otherwise, you really won't be able to fully appreciate this tribute, and the songs will probably get repetitive. When you listen to the tribute, you'll pretty much be thinking about the original songs and putting them together in your mind.

I suggest this tribute to any 3 Doors Down fan, as I'm sure they'd appreciate it as much as I did.

This cd sounds awesome. It takes a little while to tell which song they are playing, but when you recognize it you just start singing along with it. My favorite way to listen to this cd is playing it simultaneously with "The Better Life" or "Away from the Sun."
