Old 97's frontman Rhett Miller has always stuck to songs of heartbreak, I-done-bad confessionals, and the occasional exercise in rave-up solipsism. Regardless of which of those areas he's explored, he's set his lyrics in flawless melodies and delivered them with infectious energy. With The Instigator, Miller is at least partially on his own. Here he fronts a band that's less about fast-paced rocking and more about pushing his passionate yowl to the fore. He's still wondering if he's "gonna be lonely for the rest of my life" ("Come Around"), and he's doing so with such heart-rending conviction that you can't stop listening. And Miller's still creating melodies that shine in any setting. Straying from the guitar/bass/drums setup of the 97's, Miller employs organ on the tender "World Inside the World" and a decorous acoustic backing on the midtempo, pop-radio-friendly "Point Shirley" and "Four-Eyed Girl." Miller's energy bursts forth on the opener, "Our Love," and on his lo-fi paean to Chicago, "The El." Fans who like the Miller who pours his heart all over the stage will love The Instigator. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Lovely and rocking.......2007-01-10

If you are already a fan of The Old 97's, you will certainly enjoy Rhett Miller's first solo outing. His wistful, heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics and understated alt-country-rock delivery combine to produce some of the most beautiful rock songs ever. The songs range from bouncy to mournful but always retain his signature style and poetry. Start with the single "Come Around" and if you're not convinced, listen to "World Inside the World". Personally speaking, I love everything Rhett and the Old 97's have done and The Instigator is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!.......2006-04-29

From beginning to end this album is a winner... soulful, thought-provoking, intellectual and romantic lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Rhett delivers solid stuff.......2006-04-07

Rhett is still delivering inspired lyrics with great melodies. "Our Love" is a cool opener with great lyrics and "Come Around" is a great pop song and "Nervous Heart" has a great sentiment. "World Inside a World" is a little repetitive with the lyrics and doesn't really match up to the similar "Question" on the Old 97's Satellite Rides release, yet it is still instantly hummable. That said all the songs are catchy with just enough jangly guitar to keep it respectable. This doesn't really have the jagged edge that the Old 97's manage to nurture through even their poppiest moments, but that doesnt mean its bad.

5 out of 5 stars Infectious and Fun .......2006-03-07

My first introduction to Rhett/Old 97's was through this CD. I read a review of "The Instigator" in a local independent newspaper and it sounded promising so I decided to check it out. From the first few seconds of "Our Love, " I was hooked and "The Instigator" stayed in constant rotation in my car CD player for months, at the least. Rhett's music is poppy and infectious, with great lyrics to boot. Rhett is able to sing about his favorite subject, love, without sounding cliched and cheesy. My favorite tracks on the CD are "Our Love," "World Inside the World," and the wonderfully twangy "The El." Living in Philadelphia, I like to pretend the song is about our very own El. I read that "The Instigator" was written as a response to Rhett's having to leave NYC after 9/11, and references to this tragic event can be found in the songs. Another reason I love the CD (as an English major) is that he name drops author Don Delillo and "Point Shirley" is based on the Sylvia Plath poem by the same name. Smart, talented and cute - Rhett rocks.

5 out of 5 stars more addictive than crack!.......2006-02-20

this infectious pop will never find its way to the airwaves and that's probably a good thing. it's way too smart for the masses. rhett miller, whoever he may be, is definitely an amazing songwriter. these songs are simply drooling with melody and rhythm. above that are smart to smart *ss lyrics that can make you laugh and cry within a single song.

i dare you to listen more than twice without becoming a rhett miller addict for life. you'll be jonesing for his next solo work, and you'll suddenly find yourself buying music from a band called "Old 97's" just because he's a member. This is really good stuff!!!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Much better than before.......2007-05-13

This album is something that you can dance to, but the songs have tapered away from Ms. Brown's candy coated pop, to a more mature sounding music. This is a definite hit!

5 out of 5 stars I bought this album on a whim!.......2007-03-12

I was in Walmart's electronic area (which is where you can usually find me!) and I saw the album. I heard Unbelieveable and I was sold on that song but couldn't find the single. The album on first listen was not my favorite, but after a while I started liking it. It is a great album and I'm glad I bought it. Talent is a virtue!!

3 out of 5 stars respectable debut, waiting to really shine........2006-07-13

I bought this CD when it came out because of the single "Unbelievable." Great single, excellent vocals, on par production. So why isn't the rest of the CD like this? The only songs I like are "Like 'Em Like That" & "Instigator", the latter being a great club tune. I would definitely like to hear more from her, yet I don't think she's quite there yet.

5 out of 5 stars Not a single bad note.......2006-05-22

Kaci Brown brings something fresh and new to the pop scene...she brings some real talent, serving up a mix of Mandy Moore and Kelly Clarkson yet always maintaining originality, Kaci is a welcomed 'new' artist. Her album 'Instigator' remains fresh throughout it's track listing, and while some songs may seem a bit childish remember, she's only 16, and the fact that she co-wrote most of these songs is extremly impressive. Starting with her impressive single 'Unbelievable' she immediatly shows off her vocal shops as well as emotional range for this track is not childsplay. Tracks like the title track 'Instigator' and 'Like 'Em Like That' show her playfull almost sl*tty side where she sings about getting with boy after boy after boy. But it's the grace in her voice on tracks like 'Cadillac Hotel' and 'You Fool' that really set Kaci apart from the crowd for she not only plays her own guitar but she sings with beauty and conviction. By far the most exilerating tracks come back to back, 'Waltz' the breathy dance number, and 'SOS' the slowed down heart tugger. Kaci has true talent and serves up an extremly well rounded album, giving us great dance tracks and great slow jams, one right after the other without missing a beat.

5 out of 5 stars Highest quality pop release in a long time.......2006-05-18

I first got hooked on Kaci Brown when I heard the hot Gomi remix of Instigator in a club. I got super excited about the song and freaked out when I found the single for only $1.99 that includes several remixes. I listened to some samples of the girl's album here on Amazon and wasn't that impressed, but one day I found the CD at wal-mart and got excited so I bought it--thank goodness! This album doesn't have a huge track list but it has a HUGE list of hits. Every song is so good, you won't skip any. "My Baby" is an amaaazing song that shows off Kaci's vocals. "Cadillac Hotel" "Body Language" and "The Waltz" are all impressive fairly up-beat tracks, "You Fool" is a powerful ballad. And of course "Instigator" is the greatest pop song I've ever heard.

Dance fans may be a little disappointed that the album isnt full of up-tempo hits like "Instigator" but being a dance fan myself, I know you won't be disappointed once you actually put this in your cd player. Kaci Brown is the greatest find I've run across in a long long time.

If you're still not certain you'll love the album, go cheap and just by the "Instigator" single. It's only $1.99 and includes incredible remixes and a great song "Cadillac Hotel" from this album.

5 out of 5 stars Impossible Not to Dance.........2006-05-19

If you're looking at this item you have probably already heard "Instigator" and realized that it is one of the greatest dance songs ever produced. Or you might have heard the Gomi remix at the clubs and are dying to own the track. Either way, go with your gut and purchase this quick. Not only is the original hot, but the Gomi and Solar City remixes are even hotter. Even the bonus track Cadillac Hotel is one of Kaci's greatest songs from her album, which is also very impressive.

It's always exciting for me to discover new artists with such amazing tracks. If you're thinking Kaci Brown is a one-hit-wonder, you're wrong. Her album is full of potential hits, though I'll admit "Instigator" is the top song.

Spend the $2, it's the cheapest Single you'll ever find to include so many top-notch remixes.

      Product Description

Taken from the Italian phrase for computer that literally translates to electronic brain, Cervello Elettronico is the electronic musical act founded by David Christian [aka Snarf]. Influenced by 80s Industrial and 90s Electronica, the project's inception in 2001 contributed to a new underground scene growing in the New York City area. Several demos and self released EPs were sold and openly distributed throughout the internet before the the act landed it's first live show supporting Manufactura and Terrorfakt in the spring of 2004 at NYC's legendary Albion night. Since then Cervello Elettronico has performed more than 50 live performances all over the world including The Avalon in Los Angeles, Slimelight in London, Montreal, Mexico City, and at the Moritzbastei in Leipzig, Germany for Planet Myer Day V. Negate The Instigator is the long awaited debut album by Cervello Elettronico which will see it's release in early 2007 on Crunch Pod. It's sound can best be described as a mix of Power Noise, EBM, and Techno. From start to finish, different layers of sound are tied together by heavy bass, driving rhythms, abrasive percussions, and meticulously placed samples. This inaugural release helps define the shape of things to come for this act and the genre.

      Customer Reviews:

Negate the Instigator is a solid, skillfully-crafted album that nobody who's interested in contemporary electronic music will want to miss. For fans of CE this album has been a long time coming, but it's well worth the wait.

Officially released in 2002, then re-released digitally in 2003, Used Materials is the self-produced debut album from Instigator (aka Jake Setlak), on his personal imprint, Pylbug.

Here is the official album description from [...]:

The self-released debut full-length from Chicago's subversive beatmeister Instigator. From abstract to bombastic and from tense to dense, Used Materials wriggles and writhes from start to finish.

It crystallized from more than two years of collecting original source material in a variety of formats, mixing them into each other, collecting more material, remixing everything again...

The result is a lo-fi/hi-fi hybrid of intricately broken beats, filtered field recordings and caustic synth grooves - all strung together with a sarcastic knack for sampling. And while the sound is heavily machinated, there is obviously an unnerved human at the controls.

Used Materials features unique cameos and appearances by members of fellow Chicago acts including Epectir, Kim, Molar Mill, Quatre Tete, Ten Tongues and Timeout Drawer, with friends from Pal:ndrom (NY) and The Mass (SF). Also features rappers Sneaky Guy and FlyingEarOfCorn, ace slide guitarist Johnathan Winfield Basil Gorlewski, incendiary voice-mailer Pat Clap, two cats, a dog and more.
