Product Description
When the Runaways debuted in 1976 with this self-titled LP, aggressive female rockers were the exception instead of the rule. With this album, the Runaways made it crystal clear that women (or specifically, adolescent girls) were more than capable of playing intense, forceful hard rock that went directly for the jugular. Produced by Kim Fowley. 10 tracks & a fold-out sleeve with extensive liner notes, photos & other memorabilia. Cherry Red Records. 2003.

lungman.......2006-11-28
After listening to this incredible, landmark album umpteenthousand times, I've come up with a new angle on it. I can't believe there wasn't a method to the way it was put together. Here goes:
A character is introduced in the first track. You follow her through some sexual fantasies, life on the street, relationship issues, and then a rejection of her family's values ("two TV sets, ...Cadillac cars don't mean nothin at all"). She then declares her path in life ("...her life was saved by rock and roll"). Next, more sexual fantasies, revenge, then she declares her philosophy in life: "...if you get caught, just deny it!" Then comes fake ID, popping pills, stealing cars, getting busted, getting beaten, incarceration, then a lament:"...super star, never had a chance...planet sorrow...no tomorrow". This is followed by a failed excape attempt. Then, the most disturbing part of the whole album: it never ends. There's no coda, downbeat, or anything. It just drifts on out into nowhere with Sandy West's (may she rest in peace) dirge-like, mournful drum tatoo!
Rather than glorify teenage temptation, rebellion, and sexual fantasy, the album puts out a stern warning: "Go this route, then here's the risk kids!" The whole thing is a morality play--a little campy, but there it is.
All girl teenage rock`n`roll rebellion at it`s best.......2006-07-21
Although i was a pre teen when i first heard this album back in 1976, i still fell in love with these "bad" teenage girls. Why? One reason was because of their good looks, but the main reason was because they rocked just as hard (if not, harder) than any male rock band did at the time. These girls deserved to be bigger than Kiss, but why it never happened, i don`t know. Cherry Bomb is nothing but one of the greatest teenage rock rebellion anthems of all time. This, their debut self titled album, is full of classic rock songs. The girls have influenced many female rock artists since. Forget Hole, the Bangles, Babes in toyland..etc.. The Runaways were the original and the best. Unfortunately, i`ve recently just heard some very sad news. Sandy West, the drummer, at 46, is fighting a life threatening disease. Let`s all hope she pulls through. You can send Sandy email letters of encouragement via The Runaways official website
Great example of girl teen power!.......2006-04-02
This is an awesome first album. Joan Jett's start to her very long career. Kim Fowley did toy with the idea of having both Cherie and Marie Currie in the band but ultimately it was only Cherie. As stated previously an earlier reviewer says Marie is on the cover. Nope all wrong! It is Cherie. Marie was never actually a member of this band. Her vocals are not nearly as strong as Cherie's anyway. Pick this up. It's a classic!
Almost Perfect.......2006-03-07
First off, let me say that I love this band. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 are simple. The production stinks! The performances & songs are great. The only other reason for the 4 stars is: Lita's guitar solo's are cut out or back in favor of piano in places & Jackie doesn't play bass on it. It's Nigel Harrison from Blondie. Don't know why as Jackie is great! And to clarify some other post mistakes: It's Cherie, not Marie Currie on the cover & in the band. Joan sings "You Drive Me Wild" & about half the songs on the album. Standout tracks: "Cherry Bomb", "Is It Day Or Night", "Blackmail"
Awesome band, awesome album.......2006-01-05
I am an orginal Runaways fan and got into them in the late 70s and consequently started playing guitar. I love all of their albums equally. There is something extra special about the first, however. For any girl that wants to play rock and roll, this album is a must have. They may have been just teenagers but they were and still are very talented ladies.

THE RUNAWAYS WERE ONE OF THE FIRST TEENAGE FEMALE ROCK BANDS EVER!.......2006-12-29
I will be writing a review on the legendary masterpiece greatest hits compilation album entitled "THE BEST OF" by one of Rock's first true teenage female rockers, THE RUNAWAYS! This album is part of the 20th Century Masters in the Millennium Collection series. This album was originally released in 2005 on CD on the Mercury Records label in association with Chronicles Inc. and The Island Def Jam Music Group. All of these companies are A Universal Music Company. The matrix or ID number of this album is B0004609-02. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
What can I say about these great songs on this legendary compilation album and the legendary band that recorded them all those years ago that hasn't already been said? It would be inappropriate for me to write a review on many of the great female rockers without mentioning THE RUNAWAYS! And just think, I still have to write reviews on the great Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Lita Ford and Blondie! When then teenage female unknowns Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Cherie Currie, Jackie Fox and Sandy West got together and formed THE RUNAWAYS, there was NO LOOKING BACK! This band was actually one of the very first teenage female rockers that played their own instruments! In reality, THIS BAND KICKED A*S AND KNEW HOW TO ROCK! It wasn't until they met a*sho*e manager hustler Kim Fowley that THE RUNAWAYS were showing signs of LIFE! In my opinion, "THE BEST OF THE RUNAWAYS" is an outstanding compilation and is a true testament of the sheer genius of a great band that was indeed ahead of their time. Every single song track in this compilation album is great!
I will list and briefly review all the song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Cherry Bomb," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A great Rocker! A Joan Jett/Kim Fowley composition! Currie sings this song with such anger that she actually convinces you that she is going to kick your a*s! This song kicks a*s! I love it!) (2.) "Blackmail," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great RUNAWAYS ROCKER! Currie kicks a*s on Lead Vocals! By this time, Joan Jett and Lita Ford were already showing signs of playing some mean blistering guitars! I love it!) (3.) "Secrets," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great RUNAWAYS ROCKER! This song kicks a*s as well! I love it dearly!) (4.) "I Love Playin' With fire," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great RUNAWAYS ROCKER! One of Joan Jett's first compositions! Joan sings and plays the guitar with such emotion and grace that she leaves you begging for more!) (5.) "Born To Be Bad," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great RUNAWAYS ROCKER! Currie sings this song like she really means it! The guitar riff arrangements by both Jett and Ford tear the roof off the house! I love it!) (6.) "Take It Or Leave It," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great RUNAWAYS ROCKER! This song kicks a*s as well! Jett's and Ford's blistering merciless guitar riffs combined with Jett's blistering Lead Vocals create a great rocker! This is another great song I love dearly!) (7.) "Queens Of Noise," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great RUNAWAYS ROCKER! This song truly kicks some serious a*s! I love Jett's and Ford's blistering merciless guitar playing in this one!) (8.) "You Drive Me Wild," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great RUNAWAYS ROCKER! Jett and Ford rock the house down in this one! I love this one dearly!) (9.) "Neon Angels On The Road To Ruin," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great RUNAWAYS ROCKER! This song kicks a*s! I still can't believe that this is actually a teenage female band rockin' and kickin' a*s!) (10.) "Wasted," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great RUNAWAYS ROCKER! This song kicks a*s as well! Jett's and Ford's blistering merciless guitar playing show's how its done in this one! Joan's rough Lead Vocals can send goose bumps up your spine! I love it!) (11.) "Wait For Me" (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great RUNAWAYS ROCKER! Jett's and Ford's blistering guitar playing shows no mercy in this number! Jett's blistering Lead Vocals saves grace in the band in place of the now departed Currie! I love this song dearly!) and (12.) "Waitin' For The Night." (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great RUNAWAYS ROCKER! I love this song! Jett's and Ford's blistering guitar playing can have your ears ringing for days! I love it dearly!) Overall, this is ONE HELL OF A A*S KICKING ALBUM! Every single song track is nothing less than outstanding and brilliant!
As you can see, this is definitely one treasure album worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable and important part of his or her personal music collection. This priceless gem will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!
In closing, its just too bad that THE RUNAWAYS disbanded in 1979, this was a great band that STILL had so much to give! However, THE RUNAWAYS legend does not end in 1979! Female rockers Joan Jett and Lita Ford would light up the Rock n' Roll world and would entertain us further with their spectacular solo careers! Cherie Currie would wind up recording a solo album with her sister Marie and take up a career in acting. Believe it or not, Bass player Jackie Fox would end up going to Harvard Law School and wind up being a successful entertainment Lawyer! WOW! Sandy West would wind up being a bounty collector which means she would collect money for loan sharks! WOW! I would sure hate to piss her off! And last but not least, the replacement Bass player for the departed Jackie Fox whose name is Vicki Blue A.K.A. Victory Tischler-Blue! She would eventually pursue a career behind the camera in film and TV. Sadly, it was Blue that had the unfortunate bout with seizures that would freak the band out and be one of the contributing factors that would lay THE RUNAWAYS to rest! VERY UNFAIR! However, Blue would film a documentary entitled Edgeplay, The story of THE RUNAWAYS! this film was made with the full cooperation of the band with the exception of Joan Jett! Come on Joan, lets hear your side of the story! I know you have alot to say! THE RUNAWAYS, without a doubt, has left a legecy of great songs behind and is a true legendary band that will NEVER be forgotten! Here's to you my darling RUNAWAYS queen's! Keep the faith! A LATE NOTE: I was saddened to hear about the recent death of former RUNAWAYS Drummer Sandy West! She passed away on 21 October 2006 after a long battle with Cancer! Another tragic loss for Rock n' Roll! R.I.P. my sweet Sandy West 1959-2006. We will all miss you! Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE RUNAWAYS RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take care. Forever in Rock, J.L.
The Runaways The Best Of The Runaways.......2006-07-08
I have been a long time fan of Joan Jett so I bought this album to hear her first band.I was suprised that some of these songs were pretty good. Secrets should of been a hit single catchy and has a great guitar drum break in the middle of the song also Wait For Me is so catchy and such a sing along.I liked Cherrie as lead vocalist better but Joan did a great job when she quit the band the other songs are good everyone knows Cherry Bomb but the other songs are worth listening to.they were one of the first female rock bands and one of the best cause every other female band since has tried to copy them.Hole L7,The Donnas you name it as for the Go Go's are better that someone said in a review , yeah they were more polished and had a great songwriter in the band The Runaways should of stood together and been givin a chance to grow and make better records but they didn't anyway for any fan of Joan Jett or Lita Ford a good listen! also get the 80's Mercury best of which has Cmon one of the best songs The Runaways ever did that should of been on this cd.
So they not the GO-GOs, but they were great.......2005-09-06
I have always been a heavy into the Runaways. Since 1970's
I have most of theirs lps. The best lineup was the original ones that where the best music was played Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West, Cherie Currie and the best for last Jackie Fox.
I highly recommend this cd for those who need to hear the best all-girl rock band ever.
It's nice that they were at least acknowledged..........2005-06-23
...but this Millennium Collection is strictly Runaways 101. There are much better places to begin your Runaways collection. Even the mid-'80's Mercury compilation features all these songs and more. For those totally unfamiliar with the Runaways' music, it's crunchy, hard-shelled glitter rock(not quite punk, although critics were quick to call it that in 1977), with sexually diffuse lyrics and lots of bad-girl-on-the-schoolyard sneering. However, the Runaways were definitely not posers, and Lita Ford showed flashy, amazing guitar skills even then(she didn't have much speed, but she was adept with this jailbait material). But for the uninitiated, the Mercury comp. is the better buy.

A Glittering Driven Rock Album from the Original Girl Power Band.
Customer Reviews:
Yes, The Queens of Noise.......2007-07-11
The Runaways' probably break some noise records with their second album. This band is: Joan Jett, Sandy West, Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, and Jackie Fox. Although many people nowadays haven't heard of them, I can quarantee that they were the best girl rock band ever! Cherie Currie is at least as good vocalist as for example Doro from Warlock. Both are great singers and both can use their voices in different situations...whether it is ballad or real upbeat rock song. It is quite funny that Lita Ford doesn't sing in this album...in fact she is the only one who doesn't sing background vocals although she has had a great solo carriere with songs like "Kiss Me Deadly", "Hungry", and "Close My Eyes Forever" (with Ozzy Osbourne). Well, all the band members are great singers and they play very good their guitars and drums.
"Queens of Noise" is a great album...maybe it is better than their first one but I think both records are great. They both sound quite "innocent" albums. They have that original rock sound. So, if you liked the first album, you probably like this one too. The songs "Queens of Noise", "Take It Or Leave It", "I Love Playin' With Fire", and the upbeat song "Neon Angels on the Road to Ruin It" are quaranteed to be excellent rock songs. Also the tracks "Hollywood" and "California Paradise" are great ones. They are already small signs of the commercial sound and losing the original innocence. "Johnny Guitar" is the only weak link in this album. It is very long and boring...the reason why this isn't so perfect. The slower songs "Heartbeat" and "Midnight Music" are great and excellent songs..."Heartbeat" is quite an erotic song lyrically but quite scary and erotic musically. It creeps me when I listen to it. "Born to Be Bad" is quite a raw song. It has it slower and raw moments: "Cause I Was Born to Be Bad. I'm Not Sad But I'm Glad I Did It. Born to Be Bad. I'm Not Sad Why Don't You All Get With It. By the way, my favourite lyrics in this album is "Your Eyes Are Sparkling With Teenage Fire. I'll Satisfy Your Made Desires Cause I Love Playing With Fire And I Don't Wanna Get Burned..."
Stars: I Love Playin' with Fire, Queens of Noise, Take It Or Leave It, Heartbeat, Neon Angels on the Road to Ruin
the second attempt.......2006-11-10
Maybe technically slicker than their first album with some truly time enduring tracks. Not quite as much exuberance as their live album or the first one but a must have for any Runaways fan.
Runaways - 'Queens Of Noise' (Cherry Red).......2006-05-06
Originally released in 1977,this was THE '70's all-female band's third effort.Melodic, yet hard edged rock, with that 'girl's night out' vibe to it.Choice cuts are the title track "Queens Of Noise","Neon Angels(On The Road To Ruin)","California Paradise" and the in-your-face "Johnny Guitar".Line-up:Lita Ford-guitar&vocals,Joan Jett-guitar&vocals,Cherie Currie-lead vocals,Jackie Fox-bass and Sandy West-drums.Should appeal to fans of Girlschool,L7,The Donnas and Hole.Semi-recommended.
Neon Angels.......2005-11-13
Glam, punk, metal and 60s girl-group music all at once. The original Teen Queens of the Glitterati. Too bad they never had a movie.
I didn't know what I was missing..........2005-08-08
...for all of these years. You know when you hear about something, in this case a band, and always mean to give it a listen? I finally did. I love this band. Joan Jett has a sharper edge on her Runaways stuff (which I love) then on her solo records. The drummer (Sandy West) is amazing - her playing actually blew me away just a little more than Lita's 17 year old guitaring. Singing of teen angst among great, strong drums and rhythm guitar. Mysterious ballads from Cherie Currie, with smoky, sexy vocals (MUCH better than her awful solo stuff), and a wild album cover to boot. The opening track is amazing, Joan singing the title track. My other favorites are "Neon Angels on the Road to Ruin", "Hollywood" (Joan is TOTALLY punk rock on it), and Take it or Leave it (wild, screeching back-up vocals---great!)

Giant album in more ways than one........2006-04-30
This is one of the best melodic hard rock offerings from the late 80's. Superb guitar work with complementing keyboards (not over excesive) and one of the best AOR voices in the game. Songs are superb (except for one or two fillers).
The song "Innocent days" is my favorite but "I'm a believer" is a strong rockin tune too. Pick of the ballads would be "I'll see you in my dreams". "It takes two" is also a strong favorite. The minimal synths on this album means it doesn't have that dated sound like some of Leppard's stuff from that era. If Giant took the best songs from this album and "time to burn" and added a few knew songs to form a 'best of' CD, i think it could easily be one of the top 5 hard rock "best of" type albums of all time.
The Huff Brothers do it again........2005-06-03
If Dan Huff had not been such a great producer (Wynnona/Keith Urban/Montgomery Gentry/ Trace Atkins/Jo Dee Messina) he could have been a Rock Star. His playing has earned him the CMA's Award for "Best Musician in Nashville" and this album shows why.
I read the review by this Don Scott guy and would ask him which Bill Lane he is speaking of as I know 5 myself and all of them are guitar pickers. There is the Bill Lane from the Boston area, Bill Lane from LA and NY who is an engiineer, and Bill Lane of Bleu Lane in Nashville who is daggone great guitar player. Some one told me that David Huff was slated for producing Bleu Lane's first major label release. This in no way approaches this guys comments but from where I am listening the Huff's did a dadgum great job on their own before any affilliation with Terry Thomas too.
Giant featured the late Van Stephenson of Blackhawk on backing vocals and keyboards. The Huffs writing and playing comes through on this album and their other two albums for different labels that track the band from their California beginnings to their Nashville sessions with just about every major album over the past couple of years. Again this album shows why.
Bill Lane on lead guitar.......2004-11-21
The two Giant albums have some of the best vocals, guitar playing and writing I have ever heard. Unknown to most people is that Bill Lane a.k.a. Terry Thomas actually did the lead guitar playing on the albums. Listen to the lead guitar playing on Bleu Lane that features Bill on lead and you will hear the similarities.
I'm A Believer..........2004-04-30
...in Giant. They know how to make REAL music. Songs like these never die, and as music changes through the years, songs like these only get better and better when we look back on them. This album is definately the best of all the Giant albums. My introduction to Giant was actually their song Stay from Time to Burn. It hooked me from the first notes, and soon I was listening to Gian all the time. The skills of the band are amazing. They can write a song that truly touches the heart through the color of the lyrics and emotion in the tone of the voices. Listen to IT Takes Two- truly the best example of all their talent combined. The vocals are absolutely great and the sound is so clean and clear. The power of the lyrics and the clarity of the vocals combined enter straight to the soul on the winds of emotion. The guitar work on the album makes me listen in awe at Dann Huff and wonder why I ever attempted the instrument myself. He is definately a legend in the making. This CD is the best way you could spend you money right now!
Never a Dull Moment.......2003-07-04
Few albums grow on you like this one..........the guitar , bass , keyboards, drums all click to a heartbeat that has original style electrifying your brain with every song...........spirit of Rock and Roll with a variety of approaches from mild to "let's get it on type spirit". I particularly like "Hold Back the Night" for the easy intro and the full force "plunge" it takes the beat to...........so what do you think.....sample some.........let me know if ya need other suggestions...
"Time to Burn" was the next release and is ALSO excellent "craftsmanship".

Although by this Time the Runaways Had Lost Both Cherie Currie and Jackie Fox, it was by No Means Fatal as Joan Jett Took Over the Lead Vocals. With Snarling Vocals from Joan and in Your Face Rock Guitar from Lita Ford, this was a Fantastic Album from the Runaways. Tracks Like the Jaded `little Sister' and the Catchy `wait for Me' Proved There was Plenty of Life in the Girls Yet!! Critically Acclaimed but Never Receiving their Due, the Runaways were Formed in Hollywood in 1975, with the Help of Music Svengali / Producer Kim Fowley, Becoming the First all Female Rock and Roll Band to Actually Make an Impression on the Record Buying Public and Musicians Alike - Although More So Now Than Then! Respected in their Day by Bands Such as Blondie and the Ramones, and Now Cited as a Major Influence by Bands Such as Courtney Love, Bikini Kill, L7, the Donnas and Babes in Toyland the Runaways Time Has Finally Come!

In honor of Sandy West and because The Runaways rock!.......2006-10-26
My review is in honor of Sandy West the drummer for The Runaways who passed away on October 21, 2006. I also have been a fan of The Runaways since they began. I grew up with them - have all their albums and still listen to their music. For me, it is the kind of music I can put on and instantly feel energized and alive. I love Queen's of Noise, California, American Nights and of course, Cherry Bomb from this cd.
For Sandy West - this album rocks!.......2006-10-24
My friend in the 70s, David Coston, had this album on Japanese import and I borrowed it all the time. It sounded so much bigger than the studio albums. I'm finally getting my own copy today, in loving memory of Sandy West, one of the great all-time rock drummers!
Buy This NOW!.......2006-03-07
After the horrible production of "The Runaways" & the HUGE improvement on the stellar "Queens Of Noise", the band released one of the best live albums ever made. A good amount of new material is featured here & it is all great (Gettin' Hot, I Wanna Be Where The Boys Are, C'Mon, All Right You Guys) and almost all of the songs from the first album are 100% better, especially "Rock N' Roll" & "American Nights". If you can track down the Live In Japan footage, buy it! All of the girls shine on this, but I give props to Jackie Fox first!
On the Road..........2005-02-22
After making two enourmous studio albums The Runaways give them fans what they wanted for: a live recording. I like this live album so much because it is simpel and doesn't have anything strange: intros, outros, interludes, guitar solos, or anything absolutely nonesense. They just play and sing songs: that's what the audiences wishes for. There's three songs from their second album, Queens of Noise ("Queens of Noise", "California Paradise", "Neon Angels on the Road to Ruin"), four from their debut album ("Rock-n-Roll", "You Drive Me Wild", "Cherry Bomb", "American Nights"), and five previously unreleased songs ("All Right You Guys", "Wild Thing", "Gettin' Hot", "I Wanna Be Where the Boys Are", "C'mon"). I think there should have been at least one more track from "Queens of Noise"...maybe "Midnight Music" or "Heartbeat" would have been good. I think the previously unreleased songs are good in this live concert, especially "Gettin' Hot" and "I Wanna Be Where the Boys Are". The sound quality is very good and feels like you actually would be there listening to them. I like when audience sing with them "Rock-n-Roll" in the beginning of the song: "It's Alright!". Cherie Currie never loses her touch with the audience.
Stars: Cherry Bomb, Queens of Noise, I Wanna Be Where the Boys Are, Rock-n-roll, Neon Angels on the Road to Ruin
The essense of rock!.......2005-01-11
Live in Japan by the Runaways is 1000% pure rock and roll.
There is nothing better.

RUNAWAYS - ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST.......2007-01-27
I SAW THIS SHOW YEARS AGO AND THOUGHT IT WAS QUITE STRIKING. I STILL FIND THIS UNUSUAL MUSICAL STRIKING, POINGANT AND POWERFUL. I AM SO GLAD IT HAS BEEN PRESERVED
For the Broadway fan seeking something different.......2005-09-04
Liz Swados unique (and Tony nominated) musical managed a fairly successful 274 performance run in 1978. The cast album was made by Columbia in their last flurry of activity before abandoning the field the label had dominated for 30 years. As an album it never gave you a sense of what the show was about. Perhaps they needed to record some of the monologues and speeches. The youthful cast has energy to spare but the diction in the chorus numbers is often mushy. Still the score is unique in melding several different styles, and almost two decades ahead of RENT in addressing urban social woes. Some of the material is disturbing, some heartbreaking: listen to "Lullaby from Baby To Baby."
The lyrics are stream-of-consciousness style and some of the lines seem forced. The show has had a number of regional and community theatre stagings, but remains one of the least-known Tony nominated shows of all time.
The problem of teen runaways is still a major one, and no musical is ever going to solve that.
Thank goodness it's finally on CD.......2003-06-08
A phenomenal soundtrack - listen for young Josie Guzman, later to become a star in the "Guys and Dolls" revival. I was involved with a community theater production of this musical at age 15, and I've been listening to a bad tape of a warped record for more than a decade. I couldn't be more thrilled to finally own it on CD!!
One of the greatest musicals of all time.......2003-05-07
RUNAWAYS is composed by Elizabeth Swados and premiered at the Public Theather NYC, 1978. This excellent show which spans multiple musical styles featured such performers as Diane Lane, Trini Alverado, Jossie de Guzman, and Karen Evans. RUNAWAYS is great for anyone who likes shows in the style of HAIR, THE ME NOBODY KNOWS and INNER CITY (another AMAZING AMAZING musical avaliable on LP from Footlights Records NYC) For people who like urban musicals and rock music (RUNAWAYS even has a full rap, preety advanced for 1978, this is an album to have. The script is avaliable from Samuel French, NYC

Finally on CD! A GEM!!!.......2007-06-27
There is something wonderfully harsh and abrasive about this recording. I have waited YEARS to find this on CD, finally it is here. The packing is extra nice with fold out, lyrics, photos, and interviews. Huge respect goes out to Joan for her lead vocals and taking on the role of front person on this release. It is way more "punk" than the 1st 2 Runaways releases (also big time favs of mine!) All the songs glorify the nighttime and going out and having fun. I miss those days. Were the Runaways "technically brilliant" No! And that how we love em'....raw and dirty. The production is gritty and garage-like, but also pretty well put together. Nice crunchy chords from Lita, soild drumming from Sandy (RIP by the way!!) and over the top vocals and guitar from that gum-snappin' tough gal, JOAN!! (big love, Joan!) This is truely a "classic" gem from the later 70s. I was so desperate to have this on CD originally, I used a program to burn scratchy lps, thru the pc, onto disc. But now it's released. Why did it take 30 years?? Wow. I was only 13 when I bought this on vinyl. The cover brings back many memories from my youth, thinking, when I purchased it...hey, it's a 4 piece, and, wait, who's missing? Our Joan carries this release on her back, and screeches her soul out here! This was their last glory moment....so buy it!
The best Runaways album - best played LOUD.......2005-11-10
It's not that I didn't like Cherie Currie's vocals or Jackie Fox's bass playing... it's just that this album is better written and better produced than the others (just listen to those guitars!!!) and Joan did such a great job of carrying the torch. It all fell apart after this (listen to the disappointing "And Now The Runaways" for proof) but this in my opinion was when the girls hit the bullseye. The contrast between Joan's glam/glitter influenced playing and Lita's Richie Blackmore approach accent eachother perfectly, and Sandy West's rock-solid meat and potatoes drumming is dead-on. I'm just guessing here, but this album came out in 1977, when Punk was hitting big... and I can definitely hear some Sex Pistols in Joan's guitar... which makes sense since a few years later Steve Jones and Paul Cook would back her on a few songs on her debut solo album. All the pieces fit (for the most part) on this album and the remastering on this CD is just awesome! It sounds HUGE and when played at high volume it makes me feel 14 again.
A great album by a criminally overlooked and underrated band.
The Best.......2005-09-10
W A R N I N G: THIS IS NOT A LIVE RECORD, but a studio one.
Amazing.......2005-08-08
Just having discovered The Runaways after having heard about them for years, I finally got turned onto them by a friend of mine with "queens of noise". I decided to try this cd first. It's amazing, I can't stop listening to it. Joan's style of punk/glam on top of Lita's rock goddess metal playing makes for some amazing rock and roll. Really, really great cd. Original riffs, punky lyrics, sounds best played loud.
One of the best garage band albums.......2005-03-15
17 and 18-year-old girls playing punky hard rock--and its Heaven! I agree with the reviewer who complained about the "raspberry" being edited out on "Gotta Get Out Tonite"(only vinyl die-hards will notice of course, but who else worships the Runaways??). I have no idea what "Little Sister" refers to(with roller skates rhyming with "date" and "Watergate"!), but Joan Jett's snarl starts the record off with an intoxicating fervor. In fact, this is Jett's record all the way, co-vocalist Cherie Currie having bailed out just after the Japanese tour. "Fantasies" is too long and droning, but Lita Ford's "Trash Can Murders" is a hoot, as is Kim Fowley's "Wasted" ("china white don't treat ya right"). Lots of garage band, spiked-leather-collar fun.

Whaaat? This from a former Runaway?.......2005-08-08
NOT Runaways music. If you're a Runaways fan, that does NOT mean you will immediately become a fan of Currie as a solo artist.
It's a totally different type of music---I don't even know what to call it. I'd like to say Pop, but it's too boring; I'm angry at myself for jumping in and buying all of these cds because I just found The Runaways and loved all of their stuff (except for "and now..." which I liked, not loved).
"Beauty's only skin deep" fares only slightly better, as it has some "cute" harmonies. This is a real dud....See if you can give it a listen before you rush to buy it. I wish I had.
It finally has the sexy cover shot it deserves!.......2003-01-19
Capitol Records scrapped this delectable cover pic of the foxy Currie sisters for a spandex-'n-slanted scenery pose back in 1980, so it's great to get the original back. The CD comes with decent extra tracks recently recorded by Cherie, who sounds tougher and more determined than ever. I have always loved her soaring vocal work-out on "This Time" and Marie holds her own belting out a cover of "Overnight Sensation"(which is better than Eric Carmen's version). Now all we need is a DVD of the Currie sisters singing "Messin'" on Sha-Na-Na and the world can rest easy... B+
Huh? Wha?? I must've fallen asleep.......2002-07-27
What a boring CD...Not a single track is driven; this isn't rock and roll...It's the soundtrack to a seventies after school special...
Ex Runaway and twin sister re-visited.......2001-11-20
A must for Runaways collectors only. Unimpressive tracks which lean towards "beige" at best. A re-make of Cherry Bomb is devoid of all the sexuality and rocking raunch that made the first version a classic. Rent Foxes and Parasite instead, two cool retro Cherie flicks. The CD is dissapointing, bland...
a great female lead.......2001-06-12
The Runaways were always a fav of mine...especially Cherie. Her voice had twice the depth and feeling of Joan Jett's. So I rolled the dice on this one and liked it immediately. It walks the line between Runaway's-style tough rock and classic late 70s pop/rock arrangements (you'd swear Kenny Loggins was producing on a few). The musicianship is first-rate (how did they get Steve Lukather?) Cherie solos on the majority of original cuts and ALL of the bonus cuts (7 of 'em!) It's ends up being a Cherie solo project, as it should be.

Relaxing - Not So Heavy.......2005-04-21
After making three great studio albums and a live album The Runaways made an album that isn't even nowadays appreciated...it was a flop. Although it didn't manage to chart well in Europe or America, it has some great songs that I would count as classics. I myself like this album although at first it sounded quite soft and lazy. It isn't their heaviest work...not even near...but it own kind of speciality...it is quite relaxing album. If you aren't relaxed by the songs "Eight Days a Week" and "Little Lost Girls" then try Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon"...it is your only help. So, this is kind of a soft rock album...near pop music. Some song still represent the rock world..."Saturday Nite Special", "Mama Weer All Crazee Now", and "Black Leather". "Black Leather" is like their old material. The line-up in this album is the same as it was in The Runaways album "Waitin' for the Night"...so Joan Jett in rhythm guitar and vocals, Lita Ford in lead guitar, backing vocals and lead vocal on "I'm a Million", Sandy West in drums, backing vocals and lead vocal on "Right Now", and Vicki Blue in bass guitar and backing vocals. I miss Cherie Currie on vocals but I think Joan Jett and the girls cover her quite well.
Stars: Mama Weer All Crazee Now, Saturday Night Special, Black Leather, I'm a Million
The Queens of Noise's swan song.......2001-03-07
After the personnel changes that occured at the conclusion of the girls' 1977 Japan tour this record shows the Runaways at the end of their existance. Starting with "Queens of Noise" the band had a formula for types of songs. For example, at least one track could be considered an anthem (Queens of Noise: title track, Waitin' for the Night: Little Sister), one track showcased Lita Ford's talents on lead guitar (Queens of Noise: Johnny Guitar, Waitin' for the Night: Fantasies). The only break in this pattern is Waitin' for the Night's title track, which is the Runaways' only (albeit hard-rock) ballad. For "And Now.. the Runaways!!" the anthem is Saturday Night Special and Lita Ford's guitar exhibit is on I'm a Million. This album is not the best of the bands work, that goes to the Live In Japan LP, but this is a historically significant work considering the later solo successes of both Ford and Joan Jett.
Close to their best..........2000-12-31
As we Runaways fanatics wait(in vain?)for the domestic CD releases of the debut album, "Queens Of Noise" and(most especially)"Waitin' For The Night"(which was difficult to find on VINYL even when it first came out in Dec.'77), this is still a precious item to pick up. Joan Jett's vocals on the searching "My Buddy And Me" and (on Lita Ford's composition) "Little Lost Girls" are some of her finest moments to date, Sandy West's vocals on "Right Now" are charming, and the cover versions of Slade and the Beatles are excellent. Get it! Get it! Get it!
An interesting farwell from the first riot grrrls.......2000-07-26
The Runaways' final effort is an interesting mix of different tastes and styles of music. Recorded in 1978, lead vocalist Joan Jett's style had started to lean heavily towards punk, while powerhouse guitarist Lita Ford and drummer Sandy West had tastes which leaned towards Heavy Metal. This on top of some hints of New Wave music just beginning to come about at the time) makes for an interesting and often fun recording. Many of the songs here are covers, which is uncharacteristic for the band. However, the different musical directions of the band members coupled with constant attack from the press may contribute to the slight incoherency of style. My personal favorite track is "Black Leather", written by Sex Pistols Steve Jones and Paul Cook, which is a great representation of the Punk Rock era. The Beatles "Eight Days a Week" is taken down to a rather drippy ballad, and "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" (often covered by various bands) is a fun, up tempo track. Bonuses on this CD, especially for Runaways fans, are solos from drummer Sandy West ("Right Now", which I believe was released as a single in Japan-a great track) and Lita Ford's first lead vocal "I'm a Million". Though the bands' chemistry is a bit off if this disc is compared to previous efforts of theirs', it should be noted that they were in their late teen years and each hungry to come in to their own, which some were eventually able to do to greater commercial success. A cool purchase for those interested in early "riot grrl" music, and a must own for Runaways fans.
