Trey Anastasio had a lot of pent up creativity locked up behind that pointy little beard. The Phish guitarist eschews his band's stripped down approach and gilds the jam-band lily with big-band aspirations, moving into the ferociously funky territory occupied by King Sunny Ade, and the mighty James Brown. Anastasio not only shows off some truly interstellar guitar playing, but also uses the instrument to subvert mathematical possibilities by whimsically changing time signatures as he fearlessly bobs and weaves between the blasts of soulful sounds from his inventive and frenetic five-person horn section. This two-CD live album was recorded over nine shows during the Anastasio's 2002 tour, exposing fans to Anastasio's more baroque groove-mongering sides as he takes them through a spirited two-hour-plus journey comprised of seven previously unreleased compositions, a cover of Bob Marley's "Small Axe," and three Phish tune, including the politically charged "Sand." --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars Theme to movie "Ordinary People".......2007-07-07

I have beeen searching for this music and this CD comes closest to my memories of the haunting theme to that movie

4 out of 5 stars great melody.......2007-07-05

I thought that I would get tired of hearing the same song over and over but this cd keeps me listrning it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Canon in D is Great! .......2007-05-26

We have truely enjoyed Pachelbel's Greatest Hit. Although often associated with weddings this is wonderful to hear anytime. I would highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good thing x 8.......2006-10-28

If you'd told me that I could listen to eight consecutive versions of the same music, I would have been maybe just a tad skeptical. Yet, I just did exactly that and I am now a believer. I gave it four stars because although I do like Cleo Laine, I feel that her vocal version here is sort of like, "which one doesn't belong?" from this set, Galway's excellent flute accompaniment notwithstanding. If you find the Canon in D compelling, then by all means consider this CD.

5 out of 5 stars My very favorite music CD ever.......2006-05-02

My husband and I used to listen to this every night before sleep. After he passed away, it was years before I could listen to it without crying my eyes out. I know that the original has no lyrics, as one poster mentioned, but I absolutely love that one. "When will we ever touch again"... speaks to my very soul. I am here buying it again because I wore out the first copy. You can't go wrong with this CD...

Playwright Tony Kushner adapted his sprawling meditation on the AIDS epidemic of the 80's into an equally epic, Mike Nichols-directed HBO miniseries. But while Thomas Newman's score spans that dramatic landscape with rich stylistic diversity, the young champion of the daunting Newman family musical tradition (his father was Fox legend Alfred; his brother fellow film scorer David; his cousin songwriter/composer Randy) never lets musical bombast get in the way of compelling emotional introspection. Anchored by a delicate wind and string-driven main theme that's as mature as it is bittersweet, Newman proceeds to explore some of the same adventurous, rhythmically restless soundscapes that characterized his work on Erin Brockovich and American Beauty. But that typically moody experimentalism is leavened elsewhere by moments of neo-baroque choral exultation, smokey 30's jazz (courtesy of George Lewis and his Ragtime Band and Duke Ellington) and even flashes of gospel and orchestral post-modernism, all of it served up with a masterful sense of irony-free restraint that's become one of the composer's most refreshing hallmarks. It's easily one of Newman's -- and 2003's -- most accomplished and satisfying film scores. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Some of his best work.......2007-06-12

Most of us know Thomas Newman for his work on his more famous films like American Beauty, Shawshank Redemption, Scent of a Woman and Meet Joe Black, but this soundtrack to the HBO film is right up there with his best pieces of work. The whole album goes through various feelings, shades and emotions, the best tracks for me being Mauve Antarctica and Tropopause. If you're a Thomas Newman fan then you need this in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Angels in America - Always Great!.......2007-01-03

5 out of 5 stars The Celestial Xpression of Thomas Newman.......2005-08-31

...well, to only write a review is not enough to describe the impressive sound in this record. it is necessary to listen to it. Thomas do not scrimp in efforts to assemble this wonderful musical work. in fact, each one of the melodys, agreed, and instruments (mainly those of wind and strings) even are perfectly connected and performed in litle some more of 70 minutes of music. Transitions from the quietness of a melody to the loudest human chorus, may be hear is this soundtrack (tipically from the original Serie, that I have too in DVD). But everything is not perfect. Must be had included the Henry Mancini song: "Moon River" contained in one of the most sentimental scenes in the film/serie (that i think at least). In a plus, if you are an lover of this kind of productions, it does not have to lack in its collection the "Angels in America Soundtrack". Buy and enjoy it..!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing work.......2004-11-28

After working in film scoring for the past decade, Thomas Newman has finally achieved his masterwork with the soundtrack to "Angels in America." It is a culmination of the different techniques and themes he has worked on in the past, along with a completely new orchestral sound that perfectly underlies the depth and scope of the film. It is a very rare score in that it conveys all the happiness, pain, pessimism and hope that Kushner's work is all about, simply through the nuanced way Newman has written and arranged it. It is an incredibly entertaining score that stands well on its own. A must for any fans of Newman or the film.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars four or five stars?.......2006-11-15

I had never heard of Phish [they are not very well known in Europe] but sometime ago I stumbled across a review of this CD. The descriptions made me curious and I decided to buy the CD virtually unheard. At first I quite liked what I heard, but the music started to grow on me and now "liking" is too weak an expression for me. I think the whole musical performance is fantastic, a kind of Santana meets Gil Evans. BUT and it is a big BUT, I find the singing quite weak. That makes me hesitate to give five stars. So it is going to be four stars, because for me five stars means that I have no hesitations whatsoever. In my mind it would have been an immaculate album if he had brought in a real good singer. He could have followed the example of Bill Wyman, another notoriously weak singer, who is having other guys doing most of the vocals in his band. Still very worthwhile to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Having horns as a rythm section..........2005-03-19

In this case it works pretty well. The music flows and remains interesting from the beginning 'till the end.Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Plasma.......2005-03-11

If you have ever experienced a Phish show and a Trey Anastasio Band show the difference in the 2 is obvious. Treys band definatly lacks the in show intensity Phish once had, and the unfortunate breakup this year was a real heart breaker for many young phans like myself, however the jazzier touch to Treys work sounds nice behind his pickin and I recommend this album to anyone who is still recovering from Phish's breakup.

4 out of 5 stars very good .......2005-01-07

Trey Anastasio's live album: Plasma is fantastic. To say phish's lyrics are bad is really an ignorant thing to say unless you've heard more than just a few songs. Although some of their more complex peices from their early career were accompanied by nonsensinsical lyrics written merely as inside jokes while the band members were in their teens, there are also a lot of beautiful thought provoking words in a lot of their songs.
On the track Sand, for example...

If you can heal the symptoms
but not affect the cause
it's quite a bit like trying to heal
the gunshot would with gauze
if you instead attempt to rest
the pistol from the hand
then I would not be able to
equate my life with sand

Flowing through the hourglass
pushing through the funnel
turn once more and racing
all your siblings for the tunnel
slide like the silicone
embrace you as you fall
then bounce around
and let your brothers
crush you to the wall

I would choose my own religion
worship my own spirit
but if he ever preached to me
I wouldn't want to hear it
I'd drop him a forgotten god
languishing in shame
and then if I hit stormy seas
I'd have myself to blame

If you can heal the symptoms,
but not affect the cause
you can't heal the symptoms

Look deeper into the lyrics, and you can see something that anyone can relate to.

Anyways... check out the album. It's Stellar.

4 out of 5 stars exelent cd.......2004-09-15

I would 100% disagree with the last review about the lyrics part. Tom Marshall is a complete genius, comparable to Robert Hunter just in much differnt ways. This 2 disk cd set is an exelent compilation of live songs. Now that Phish had broken up, if you wish to continue with Anastasio's work than this cd is a must. The highlight of the cd in my opinion is the " Night Speaks to a Women" very clean jamming. Buy this CD you will thank yourself next time you are on your way to go see Trey

4 out of 5 stars Under Exposed is right...but still a good cd.......2004-02-20

Acts 29 Under Exposed is a fitting name for this cd because you prob never heard of them in mainstream circles. The cd is a truly good one but not great.

There are no outstanding jams beside "Confessions" but the remaining songs are good and deal with issues like dating the unsaved, stealing and disappointing God. The cd is definately worth the purchase but its not one that you will blast in the car on your way home. It will however minister to you and I guess that is the most important thing.

Feel free to get it, it will compliment your collection

    4 out of 5 stars A Christ-Core SLeeper.......2003-04-30

Acts 29 is an eclectic arrangement of Christcentric Hip-Hop designed to sooth your soul and make your head Knod. It definately fits the bill. Underexposed, as the title implies, is just that. More people should give it a lsten . . . you just may be pleasantly surprised.

5 out of 5 stars Best techno album I`ve ever heard!!!.......2003-07-22

As I said in the title this album is one of my favourites. I got it few years ago from my friend, haven`t heard of it befeore - I sat in a train, I pressed Play, and I remember that travel till now. Everything seems so on the right place in this album, from the "Intro" till the last ambient tracks. Every track seems to be connected with another although every one is totally different. Songs with English and German melorecitation, and the biggest "hit" of this album (Die Schwarze Zone) are exellent. Chill out tracks at the end are like poetry. This band should be the one of the Biggest in its kind, but it isn`t - why, I have no idea, this album should be one of the key albums in this king of music. Today the sound of this album is not so attractive comparing to today possibilities in techno music, but I think You won`t be dissapointed. I was looking for other products from this band (first I thought the bands name is Plasma), I found some singles but nothing special. Anyway, honestly I can say that if You are fan of electronic music You won`t be dissapointed.

Imagine the hooks, melodies and layers you've come to expect from NamNamBulu alongside hints of VNV Nation and 80's electro. An album that will grow on you in no time...

3 out of 5 stars Not terrible but certainly not Namnambulu either.......2007-01-04

This duo got alot of hype, probably because both guys are from established & favored acts of the underground electro scene. While "Artificial" isn't terrible it also isn't anything really ground breaking w/ maybe a few choice tracks making an impact more for the dance floor appeal that for any other aspect. I thought the new Covenant had more oomph! In any event, atleast it's available at a non import price.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, never before realeased 1951 movie soundtrack.......2006-07-17

The original Howard Hawks 1951 movie The Thing came to television some time in the late 1950's when I then saw it as a child. Oh, the horror of thinking back to that first viewing, realizing that electric blanket was melting the block of ice. Now, finally, the music that accompanied this terrifying movie, a score written by Dimitri Tiomkin, is available as a CD remastered from the only remaining acetate recording (from the composers personal collection) preserved at the Cinema-Television Library of the University of Southern California.

The soundtrack is only some 28 minutes long, but runs in proper sequence to the movie. A brief history of the making of The Thing from Another World accompanied the CD and included so many interesting little details, that I played a tape I have of this movie acquired a decade or more ago to pick them out for myself--and I watched the movie before finally playing the new CD. The dramatic theme cords, the wandering wind instruments and subtle electronic component even to this day bring back the fear and dismay I remember as a child under the influence of masterful movie making. Certainly a choice for the music library at McMurdo Station.

It is interesting to note that Tiomkin's 1954 score to the movie The High and the Mighty, with its glorious theme accompanying the story of an airliner filled with many-storied passengers on a flight from Hawaii to San Francisco, also revisits the score from The Thing. I recently bought the digitally enhanced DVD of The High and the Mighty, a beautifully colored version which was fun to see after so long a spell absent from once common TV showings long ago.

Although everything about The High and the Mighty seemed especially familiar, I sat up in my chair when the first hints of problems to come with the plane announced themselves--accompanied by strange, dark cords and wandering wind passages, evoking fear and trepidation. As John Wayne looks out over his starboard engines after an odd tremor and the crew later searches the dark tail section with flash lights amid aluminum struts and control pulleys, the alarming and disquieting music first developed for the Thing now evokes some ill-defined, impending menace haunting the old DC-4.

A second, much longer Tiomkin score recording to the movie Take the High Ground is included--interesting period piece. The CD case mentions "This pressing is limited to 3000 copies"--probably accounts for the somewhat high price of the recording.

4 out of 5 stars Soundtrack from "The Thing From Another World" finally available!!.......2005-11-04

Watching this film I've always been impressed with the quality
of the music and how important it is to each scene. I've always
wanted to own the soundtrack but until now found it be unavailable.
With this release we finally have this eerie and exciting film
music available on CD. If you've seen the film I'm sure you know
what to expect from this soundtrack, it's seminal '50 sci-fi stuff.
The quality of the transfer is excellent, I assume it's exactly as
recorded for the film and not a recent re-recording of an old score.
Now the problem. It was taken from a record. With headphones on
you can hear the needle going around ever so faintly. I'm assuming
that this was the only available source and that would explain why
it was never released before. Don't be put off by the source -
they did an exceptional job reproducing this recording on CD -
it really is as sharp and dynamic as you'd expect from any 50 year
old original source - in fact I'd expect you'd never even be aware
of the source unless you listen really carefully with headphones.
The soundtrack for "The Thing From Another World" as has been
a long time coming and well worth owning, I'm very picky about
sound quality and this is quickly becoming one of my most played
soundtracks. Fans of the Theremin shouldn't miss this one, the
unusual sounds of that instrument are used to great effect, to be
compared with "Forbidden Planet" and "The Day the Earth Stool Still".
Unfortunate that it only runs about 26 minutes.

Twice as long at 51 minutes is "Take the High Ground!", the second
recording on the same disk as "The Thing From Another World". In a
lot of way this is a much more ambitious effort than The Thing and
is well worth owning by itself. The producers really pack as much
as possible into this package - Total playing time for the disk is
78:42 and it comes with a 24 page booklet full of history, photos,
some rare production stills about both films.

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest Electronic bands.......2007-06-17

"Frozen Plasma" is new to me. Having listened to 'Warmongers' on I-tunes, I immediately went out to purchase the album. It was no easy task. Most Electronic bands are hard to find in just any store, but I'd say "Emphasize" by Frozen Plasma was worth purchasing.

The songs really have a nice, upbeat, dance feel that guarantees at least a handful of songs be played at nearby clubs. The songs are beautiful to listen to, never once get repetitive, and have enough Synthpop to satisfy the most hardcore fan.

The only problem I have with this album is the senseless remixes of "A Generation of the Lost". I feel that this was added in for filler to make the album have more songs. But if you can listen to a few, you will not be dissappointed in making a purchase.

    4 out of 5 stars Percussive weirdness.......2004-07-03

I've always loved the percussive elements found in most kinds of music, especially in that of electronic, dance and rap music. This is a very percussive driven record, but it's also highly expressive, zany, and fun.

Compositions such as the aptly-named "Twitch" and the multi-sectioned title track are like the soundtracks to cartoons. Each is filled with potential directions without lingering on any one idea for too long (especially in "Twitch"). Among many other audial oddities you'll hear bursts of radio stactic bump up aginst sounds of dominoes falling and mousetraps snapping (Pateras documents some of his sound sources in the liner notes to this CD).

"Meshanitsa", which employs piano and a computerized voice, is like a disfunctional conversation between two people where both particapants has something to say and has to say it at the same time. It's a fascinating duel that's cut by brief snippets of silence after each spat.

The only misfire on this collection is "Inevitable Plasma", only because I personally find this kind of freeform noodling on a solo piano too tedious for my taste.

Overall, this has been one of the more satisying releases that I've come across from the Tzadik label's Composer Series.
