Rock Candy says it all!.......2007-06-26
Classic hard rock like it should be but will never be again!
This was Monstrose best album and one of the greatest of all
time! should be in the hall of fame. every song is a killer.
the band is a killer. the production is a killer. they don't
make like this anymore.
4.5 stars Hagar's heyday.......2007-06-05
When you hear Sammy Hagar back in '73 howling like a rabid wolf, you will wonder what he's been doing since. This is pure unadulterated hard rock the way it ought to be. What this album had that made it so good was an infectious groove. A short album, it keeps running till the end, guitars blazing along the way. Just don't expect poetry..... the lyrics are as dumb as they come, you won't learn a thing. It doesn't matter... there is no message here. Just listen to the guitars and vocals, it's all you're gonna need.
This album will never fade away.......2007-03-27
Don't buy this CD unless you want to listen to clean soulful guitar playing, window-rattling bass, thunderous grooving drums, and the major label vocal introduction of Sam Hagar. I have listened to this album since its 1973 debut, and have been told it influenced hundreds of fledging and working musicians.
"Rock Candy," "Bad Motor Scooter," and "One Thing on My Mind" are tracks that are still being played by "classic rock" and "deep cut" FM stations across the U.S.A. This is a good-time, get-down-and-party CD, and I promise that it will NOT disappoint. If you are not 120 percent satisfied, give it to a friend and he'll be indebted to you for life.
Back in the day ,everyone had a copy, for good reason.......2007-03-01
This album/CD rocks from the first to last song, as anyone who has ever heard it will attest. This recording captured one of those rare "moments' when all the stars lined up just right and majic was created. I first heard this when I was 10. As a kid, I loved going through everyone's album collection and checking out the album art,and when I saw this I asked the cool 'ol hippy that owned the collection about it(the art design seemed so plain, but I was curious). His response was..." Son, if you got a little time, let's educate you in the art of real rock and roll. Carefully put on the album, turn up the volume real loud so us adults can hear it while we barbeque out back, and if you get bored, come get me and we'll change it to something else".
I sat there wide-eyed, just in awe! When it was finished playing, I went and asked if we could play it again...
'Nuff said!!!
Buy it!
Party Album of the mid 70's.......2007-02-11
This great rock album was one of the favorite soundtracks for parties in my high school. My friends hyped up on testosterone and various other things would sing all these songs at the top of their lungs building up their macho confidence for when the girls showed up. I once even had a girlfriend whos "CB Handle" was "Rock Candy" My mom was so glad when I didn't marry her!
All these songs are great, (remember the stero effects? start with guitar on one speaker, then go to bass on the other speaker) I gave this to my oldest son when he "Was Seventeen", a few years later he was able to have something to talk to Sammy Hagar about when he met him. Hagar then had my son help him with the sound check before the show. How cool is that?
Make it last is a song that I often sing in my head, to remind myself to smell the roses "Cause when you get older you (really) will understand"
This is a great album that is not near well enough known.

Not Quite As Good As The First One, But Still Worth Five Stars.......2007-06-28
PAPER MONEY isn't quite as good as Montrose's self-titled debut (how could they EVER match THAT ONE), opening with two cover versions, but it's still a five-star CD. There are plenty of great songs here, which show the band becoming more adventurous musically, but the best thing here is the perennial sports anthem "I Got The Fire", which I quoted in many a promise to stay in shape for young women I was close with in my younger days. The fact that Sammy Hagar and Ronnie Montrose, the group's two leading lights, advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as increased funding for law enforcement, makes PAPER MONEY an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
One song stars above the others.......2007-06-13
The Stones' song "Connection" on this album is the way it was supposed to be recorded in the first place.
Lifeless Effort.......2007-03-11
I remember as a young teen hearing about how bad this album was. I figured my tastes have matured and maybe I should give this album a try (now I am dating myself). I puchased this CD on account of the reviews I read on this website. I cannot begin to tell you how disappointed I was once I'd listened to it. I'm a huge fan of the Montrose debut(one of the best metal/hard rock albums ever recorded)& Sammy Hagar. It's amazing how a record company's influence can totally destroy artistic license. I simply refuse to believe that the same members that put together the debut could release such powerless drivel.
There is one occasion of inspiration noted on this album, the track entitled 'I Got The Fire', as good as it is it still pales in comparison to the worst track on the debut. This is truly for the hardcore fan of Hager/Montrose.
A Tasty Musical Energy Bar.......2006-04-11
My best friend was a drummer and had turned me on to the first Montrose album from 1973. After hearing Paper Money in 1974, we decided to start a hard rock band and we covered some Montrose tunes. I'm sure a lot of high school bands were formed in 1974 after hearing Montrose. We did "I got the fire", "Space Age Sacrifice", and "Paper Money" from that album.
I Got The Fire is a smoker of a tune and I can recall seeing Montrose play it live on The Midnight Special television show. Sammy Hagar was a real showman then and was known for jumping over amplifiers and being all over the stage. A trait he took with him in his solo career. No one else did that. It was very cool. This was stadium rock at it's best. On We're Going Home, Ronnie Montrose showed he was not only a fast guitarist but could deliver bendy, vibrant, tasty licks with amazing control and emotion. The instrumental, Starliner features an array of innovative chords, technology and a fun melody and of course, backed by the strongest rhythm section anywhere. Paper Money features Sammy Hagar singing the best version of Donovan's Connection I've ever heard. Sorry, Donovan!
The youth of today are discovering where to get their musical energy bar when they hear Montrose and Paper Money and when they decide to diversify, Montrose's later albums won't likely disappoint them.
Good 2nd Effort...........2006-04-07
This is a hard rocking record from '74. This was the last Montrose album with Sammy on vocals before he took off. Ronnie Montrose's guitar playing is awesome from start to finish. Denny Carmassi lays dome some great drum beats and Bill Church's bass is thumping. Tracks 3 through 8 are the best, but the whole record rocks.

Gamma prelude.......2007-04-07
This album was moving toward the end of Montrose, and really is more like Gamma. The sound had been cleaned up and molded into too safe of a product. Ronnie Montrose should never have left Ted Templeman- the man who produced MONTROSE- the huge record that defined the sound of hard rock guitar. With this effort, and 'jump on it' the guitar sounded like it was recorded on a small solid state 10' combo amp. Too bad. Matriarch leads off the album and is basically the best song. But then immediately we get a weak ballad... who picked the song arrangement? 20 flight rock is ok, BUT THEN Whaler starts another weak ballad- complete with lame keyboards (sounds like harpsicord...) and violins???? What the heck is that???? What record exec was behind this??? Dancin feet has some nice guitar runs, and then into a pretty cool acoustic guitar track. The album ends with Black Train - which may be one of the worst fade outs ever - I mean come on- let us listen to the lead guitar... Anyways - I had to have this in my collection - if only for the cool album cover... I have all Ronnies stuff, so this completes my collection.
Fresh Change.......2007-01-12
I almost forgot about this record... Although it really is completely different from the classic first and 2nd Montrose albums, it's pretty good. Too bad Ronnie Montrose couldn't keep an early familiar band together where the fans could get used to all the members, even if it was Montrose mark 2. I think Montrose could have been a lot more famious. A reunion with Sammy and the original members would be no less than steller. I saw Montrose with this line up open for Kiss back in 1975 at the L.A. Forum. I liked em' better than Kiss. Being "LIVE" that says a ton to top Kiss... Back to this recording! It's good! Better for the ones who already had it in the 70's and forgot about it. Takes a couple of listens to like it to it's full credibility if you've never heard it before, but definitely worth having in the collection.
Underated classic rock........2006-09-10
Great recording, just as I remember it. Montrose comes back with a reformed band and puts out a very tasteful "hard rock" effort. In my opinon, this is one of his best. Of course it's hard to top his debut recording with Sammy Hagar on vocals. But this one has a slightly different approach. Jim Alcivar's keyboards are definately an asset to the band. What's great about this type of recording;not overplayed,i.e.on the radio. In fact never heard it on air."Matriarch": "KIller Tune".
Yeah Baby!!!!
The Lost Link.......2006-07-19
if there was a link missing to the great rock roll constellation this is definitely it, its been 3 decades since i have been waiting for this album to be released on conventional media and from what I read it has finally been re-issued on cd format. I've been raised on my share of Stones, Zep, Cream, Purple, Sabbath licks but i have to say Ronnie Montrose really outshines them all on this mutha. Damn great riffs and singing too from his new frontman Bob James add the kickass foot stompin' chops of master skinman Denny Carmassi, no true blooded rocker need ask more for an albums worth of music. This has certainly been missing from my
#1 ALBUM OF MY YOUTH!!!.......2006-01-19
Back in West Chicago when I was 13 or 14 I worked as a janitor and busboy for my albums and cheapo guitar and piece of crap amp. This older dude handed me some recorded cassettes, and this was one was one of them. I immediately went out and bought the album. Wow, this one blew me away totally. At that time in my life I was starting to get into tasty fast lead guitar playing (ala Trower, Carlos and Montrose). "Warner Brothers Presents" is one of those rare gems that is a virtually "Unknown" album. It seemed that nobody had this album except me, all my friends had Montrose Montrose...
Anyhows, this album gave me an eye opener on how to make a good variety of rock songs on an album: Metal(Black Train), softer good tunes (Whaler), kick ass instrumental guitar songs (One and A Half), and everyday basic good rocking songs (Dancin Feet).

Ronnie was the best..........2007-01-22
This is just one of his incredible solo albums... Though, I like just the plain "Montrose" albums more, this is just as sweet as every other one... I highly recommend this to every fan...
Futuristic Guitar Mind Exploration.......2006-11-26
Awesome! This album is finally available again! I remember wearing this cassette out in my car back in the day- at the time I was a huge fan of instrumental guitar albums after hearing the mighty Joe Satriani, and had also picked up most of the Shrapnel records solo artists. This one was so different, original, and compelling, and remains so to this day.
While certainly full of amazing, incendiary guitar solos, what really captured my imagination is the enigmatic "space-rock" feel of this album- from the song titles ("Telstar", "Monolith") to the near-ambient, futuristic and mysterious vibe of the compositions, this is really a standout instrumental album in the genre, finally in print again. Ronnie Montrose' tone and phrasing as a soloist are phenomenal- it feels like a hybrid of the Gilmour-esque spacey feeling-oriented rock fused with a forward-thinking approach far ahead of it's time....recommended!
Ronnie at his best........2006-03-10
One of the most creative instrumental guitar albums I have heard. One of Ronnie's best. I was a big fan of the Gamma albums featuring Ronnie, and my favorite was Gamma 3. Though this is instrumental and Gamma has vocals both are classic. I also recommend Territory (though it is not as strong of an album) The Diva Station (currently out of print) and Anti-m Positively Negative -remastered (Ronnie plays on a handful of tracks but the song Security rocks). And visit Ronnies Website RonnieMontrose.com and get on his email list.
A Great Instrumental Guitar Rock Album.......2006-02-15
This cd was better than I expected to be. I remember when this came out in 1988,but I didn't buy until now when it came out in 2005 on the Wounded Bird label. The guitar work by Ronnie Montrose is excellent with great solos and guitar riffs. The music is a great blend of guitar driven instrumental rock with synthesizers with solid bass and drumming. There weren't any hits off this cd,but who cares? I like this better than the work Ronnie did with Gamma. Who needs vocals when you can play the guitar like Montrose does.
Kick Ass Ronnie Montrose.......2006-02-14
Exceptional, jammin' guitar virtuosity. I loved the techno/outer-space/mach-3 feel of this album, and hope Ronnie puts out more like this album.
All the songs are terrific, and will be great additions to your life.

Customer Reviews:
A bona fide rock classic gets a sonic facelift -- but a barely noticeable one.......2005-09-05
I've been a fan of Montrose's debut album since it was released in 1973. I still can't believe how amazing these riffs are! And Sammy Hagar gives Paul Rodgers a run for his money as "The Voice" of rock. Every single song on Montrose is a classic -- larger than life riffs, over the top vocals, drumming and bass playing ripped from The Black Sabbath Book of Heavy - thunderous.
So when I discovered Audio Fidelity released a gold disc of Montrose, I whipped out my credit card immediately.
Hmmm.
The difference in sound quality between the '73 original and the new remastered gold disc is there, but you really have to be listening intently to notice it. In fact, I've been A/B'ing the two discs for the past 30 minutes, listening carefully for every possible nuance of difference. I'm using a Denon CD player and a pair of Sennheiser headphones. Both are capable of delivering crisp highs and lows. And I'm hearing a slight difference in both, but only a slight one.
(Oddly enough, on my Denon player, the gold disc clocks in at 32:17 while the regular Warner Brothers Records CD tips the scale at 32:23. Not sure why. A six-second difference seems pretty hefty when it comes to favorite music. Yet, I can't find where these songs are missing much. A second here and there could account for it. But no music appears to be missing.)
Okay, as to the positive differences in sound quality, I'd say the biggest differences can be heard in these areas:
1. Denny Carmassi's drums are just a little crisper, especially in the cymbals and kick. (Especially, on "Rock the Nation," "One Thing On My Mind" and -- this is an obvious one -- "Rock Candy.")
2. Bill Church's bass guitar is marginally punchier and cleaner. (Especially on "Rock the Nation," "Bad Motor Scooter" and "I Don't Want It.")
3. Sammy Haggar's voice seems to have greater resolution so that it stands out a bit from the other instruments. This is across the board, not necessarily on any one track. He just sounds more up front.
Ironically, I couldn't discern -- mind you, straining to hear it and using above-average equipment -- any sonic difference in Ronnie Montrose's guitar, which is what I was hoping for.
Often when a disc is remastered the difference is striking. Led Zeppelin, Free and Sweet come to mind as good examples of this. Other times, the remastering doesn't seem to do much to improve the situation. Starz and, now, Montrose are perfect examples of this phenomenon.
That leads me to conclude two things:
1. The original recordings and CD masterings were of high quality to begin with. In the case of Montrose and Starz's debut albums, that's not hard to believe. I've always thought both were astounding recordings.
2. The 24KT gold disc ("From the original master tapes") treatment fell short somehow. Either the "master tapes" used weren't really the master tapes or the person doing the remastering wasn't tops in his/her profession.
My conclusion? Since the price between the regular WB Records CD and the new 24KT gold Audio Fidelity CD isn't astronomical ($10.99 and $14.99, respectively, as of today's date), I'd say go for the Audio Fidelity version. The difference is there (however slightly) and, heck, when you're listening to a classic like the first Montrose CD you want all the sound quality you can get.
However, if money is an object or if you can't find the new 24KT gold disc anywhere (which is a distinct possibility), there's no need to feel cheated if you buy the regular WB Records version. Either way, you're going to hear one of the greatest rock albums ever recorded.

Customer Reviews:
Last and weakest "Montrose" album of the 70's........2005-10-22
When Ronnie Montrose exploded onto the hard rock scene in 1973 with his self-titled debut album/band, he knocked the US hard rock world off its feet. No one really expected such an aggressive band and sound from the ex-Edgar Winter Group guitarist. However, he was unable to take it to the next level. His inability to maintain a steady band line-up and refusal to stick to playing just hard rock frustrated the record company and confused potential fans. After a chaotic 2nd album and the departure of vocalist Sammy Hagar, Montrose reconvened with a new singer and new sound. Their 3rd album, "Warner Brothers Presents Montrose" was much more consistent than "Paper Money" and was a great step in the right direction. However, more line-up changes and a horrible step towards pop music greeted fans who bought 1976's "Jump On It". There are a couple of great songs on here, but much of the rest is wimpy, power ballads or cheesy pop tunes. If you're a new fan looking to find the legend of "Montrose", start with the self-titled debut, then 1975's "WB's Presents". If you like those two, then try "1974's "Paper Money". Buy "Jump On It" last, or maybe not at all. Most of the best "Jump On It" stuff is on the "Best Of Montrose" CD. "Jump On It" was a horrible way to close the door on a classic band.
The best "Sammy-less" Montrose.......2005-03-31
A lot of fans say that this album, and other subsequent Montrose albums, were overlooked because Sammy Hagar left the band. Well, I actually lived through this period - I was 18 when "Jump on It" came out - and trust me: no one didn't buy a Montrose record because Hagar had quit the group. We hardly knew who he was then.
The debut self-titled Montrose album is considered a classic and featured Hagar on lead vocals. The band stumbled through its second release ("Paper Money") with part-time help from Sammy... and then he was gone. The point is, Sammy Hagar was not the icon back then that he is now. He was a good rock singer but when he left Montrose no one batted an eye. If subsequent Montrose albums didn't sell as well as the debut, it is simply because they just didn't have enough quality songs on them.
Bob James was Hagar's replacement... I had never heard of him at the time and haven't heard from since. Nonetheless, he was a fine vocalist -- not as rough and growl-ly as Hagar, but blessed with some nice rock 'n' roll pipes nonetheless.
"Jump On It" is the fourth Montrose album and the second one with James on vocals. And to me, it's the second best Montrose record overall -- after the initial debut album.
The CD opens with "Let's Go," a pulsating, driving rocker that is infectious and features some blistering guitar work from Mr. Montrose. The song begins with a propulsive drum beat and bass line that causes an almost Pavlov-like response in bringing you to your feet. James sings the hell of it. It's one of those perfect summer-time rock songs to play in your car at full volume with the top down! LET'S GO!
The title track is another great rocker, frentic and frantic, with the band playing as tight as they can get.
"Jump On It" also contains some very fine rock ballads. "Music Man" gives me goosebumps, even to this very day... James' plantive vocals ("Let me be your music...man") hit you squrely on the solar plexis. And "Rich Man," written by the late/great Dan Hartman, is just a perfect little piece of pop rock -- somewhat a precursor to what we would hear from Van Halen 10 years later.
Anyway, if you admire the guitar work of Ronnie Montrose, you probably already have the first album. For me, this is the next one you should add to your collection. (Unless you're still hung up on that Sammy Hagar thing.)
NO HAGAR BUT GREAT GUITAR FROM MONTROSE AND CREW.......2002-09-24
A great album frequently overlooked because Sammy Hagar was no longer in the band. However this album is a good rock album from Montrose and finally available as a domestic print cd. Also now available are WB presents and Open Fire, both great albums.

C.d. rocks. If you are looking to update you collection Amazon is the place to do it.
Amazon delivered quickly and in good shape.
Its good but..........2006-09-05
The first Montrose album was great. Sammy Hagar's voice and Ronnie Motrose's guitar was quite a combination. The first 3 songs on this compilation represent that terrific album. The rest of the songs are good but pale in comparision to the first three. Ronnie Montrose needed a stud singer to fully develop his power chord music. If the orginial group would have stayed together, they most likely would have been bigger.
Unbelievable even after all these years!.......2004-07-11
I was actually reading up on the new George Lynch CD (Furious George) and I noticed he does a cover of "Space Station #5) by Montrose. That brought back fond memories of that fantastic album and after reading 61 consecutive excellent reviews on Amazon (that has to be some kind of record!) I decided to go out and re-purchase it. However I could not find it locally and I ended up with the Best of CD which is fantastic. I was especially glad to see they retained the sequence of the Montrose Album with Rock the Nation, Bad Motor Scooter and Space Station #5 (the best 1-2-3 sequence I have ever heard) and since I got the Best of collection I also got "I got the Fire" (a personal favorite) as well as some other later Montrose songs.
It's amazing to think this stuff is going on 30 years old - it truly stands the test of time and is probably some of the best America Hard Rock ever produced. You just don't hear this kind of guitarwork (technical skill not to mention tone and excellent effects) in today's music, and in my opinion Hagar never sounded better than he did with Ronnie Montrose. The guitar work is phenomenal (the lead in Bad Motor Scooter still sends chills up my spine). I am so happy I got this! Oh yeah, one last thing - this CD is meant to be played LOUD - enjoy!
Meaty, beaty, ode to the way we were.......2003-07-28
Some real guitar talent here, several good cuts, a couple that are better than that, and several others that are a very far stretch for a "best of" compilation. As with BTO, great for jump starting a dance party, playing while you travel, or reminiscing about where you were during the rock and roll era. Absent are the long-lived qualities or depth associated with Hendrix, Clapton or Trower. Not something you haul out for intimate gatherings of your best friends. You might enjoy this CD for awhile, and then you will rotate it out.
Excellent compliation.......2002-12-23
This is the only Montorse cd I own( I do have have some Gamma cd's, however). The first part of the cd really rocks..the stuff with sammy hagar..still some of the best stuff both montrose and hagar have done. The songs with the other singers are good too. Some are better produced than others. Take for instance Stand a really good song sounds a lot like Telsa as do a couple of other songs put me in mind of telsa. The second half sometimes goes in a different path...not just hard rockin songs but other type of material, in fact, these are some of the best songs of the non hagar era.

Customer Reviews:
Experimental Shredding.......2004-11-26
By 1978, Ronnie Montrose had completed stints with the Edgar Winter Group [Slow Ride, Frankenstein] and his own band Montrose, with Sammy Hagar [that self-titled first album is one of the best heavy metal albums in the history of rock]. He had also done studio work with a variety of people.
When Open Fire first appeared, many fans considered it a total failure because it was so much different than anything Montrose had produced before. Open-minded fans were more forgiving, regarding the album as an either an interesting experiment or an amusing indulgence.
To put this album into its proper perspective, you need to recall the artistic mood of the time. In the late Seventies, a lot of recording artists were experimenting with elements of rock, jazz and classical. Some of the notable names include Miles Davis, Jeff Beck, Santana, Steely Dan, Jean Luc Ponty, Pat Metheny, Yes and others, including Ronnie Montrose on this album.
Some of the songs on Open Fire [Town Without Pity, Heads Up, Rocky Road] have a decidedly rock flavor and are precursors to the kind of music that would later be produced by people like Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Marc Bonilla and others. Other songs [My Little Mystery, Leo Rising] have more in common with the kind of stuff that would later be produced by artists like William Ackerman. No Beginning/No End successfully combines both approaches.
This is a terrific album in its own right. The playing is superb and the melodies are outstanding. If there's a problem, it's a tendency to overdo the orchestration and layering to the point that it sometimes gets in the way of the guitar. Still, this was a worthy piece of instrumental art rock that helped pave the way for others.
Stick with Gamma..........2003-01-28
Not crazy about this one. Too much orchestration that makes it sound like a Hollywood soundtrack. Plus I'd rather hear Gene Pitney belt out 'Town Without Pity' than the Montrose sing-along on here. Too cheesy for my tastes...
If you really want to hear Montrose SMOKE, then get the Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 CDs that Wounded Bird has also recently reissued. You'd do a lot better with these two LPs that RM recorded for Elektra back in '79 and '80.
Found It!.......2002-10-05
I gave the CD the high rating because I've been searching for this for *years*. In the late '70s I remember the distinct sound of the Town Without Pity track and I thought I remembered it being Montrose... but, every now & then, I'd look for it and just could not find it. Today I heard the Gene Pitney original and was determined to search again. And finally found it!
Phil.......2001-07-19
This is the best of 70's rock guitar! the track of "Town Without Pity" is the best of the best. You really need to hear it!
* Open Fire *.......2000-09-14
Cool album, good tunes, stunning fret work by guit legend Ronnie Montrose. Open Fire is one of his soloist stuff. The powerful album 'Montrose' ('73) is my personal favorite, imagine Montrose with Samy Haggar, Bill Church and Dennis Carmassi, this is it!!!
I see - and hear! - Open Fire as a somewhat more "experimental" recording. Believe me, this album is on the verge of greatness. It isn't the raw, near Heavy, Rock music of the first or the second, Paper Money, yet Open Fire does capture the promised burst of flame it's title would suggest. Good rocking muse, mostly instrumental, that does concentrate on the superb effort of the musicians. Produced by no one else than Edgar Winter. §

70's techno-rock.......2003-01-10
This all instrumental album should be considered a pioneer piece.
One could walk into a techno-rave and slap this cd recorded inthe late 70's on and it would be right at home. Because of this, the album was 30 years ahead of it's time. The blistering licks of "A Town Without Pity" alone is worth owning this album. Super-rich synthisized walls of sound, fantastic percussions.

Excellent first outing for Montrose.......2005-10-22
This was Jack Montrose's first album under his own leadership, recorded for Atlantic in 1955. Along with him is Bob Gordon on baritone saxophone and the rhythm section of Paul Moer (p) Red Mitchell (b) and Shelly Manne (d). Tune selection is excellent, with about half the selections Montrose originals. Especially fine are the up tempo DOT'S GROOVY (Chet Baker also made a great recording of this tune) and the standard HAVE YOU MET MISS JONES. Montrose had a cool, cerebral sound (some would say cold - I don't agree), but his solos really swing hard and he enjoys quick tempos. Gordon's warm bari sound is a good contrast. Having this early Atlantic release back again is something for mainstream-modern jazz fans to celebrate. Worth getting, for sure.
Very good indeed.......2005-10-06
I prefer the recording which concentrates on the Montrose sextet (see the info and reviews for that), but this is also very good. Montrose is another of those "West Coast" musicians who is suffering undue neglect. He was not only an excellent tenor, but also an outstanding arranger and even composer. He leads a wonderful ensemble here, which is highly inventive and performs impeccably, and the music is harmonious and original throughout. Bob Gordon, notably, was a baritone player as good as the more famous Gerry Mulligan, who was himself excellent and is also due for a revival. Strongly recommended CD!! - Joost Daalder
