Album Description

Following up their critically acclaimed self-titled debut Manfred Mann's Earth Band ( Friday Music 1005) , Manfred Mann's Earth Band scored another hit album with their second LP Glorified Magnified. Originally released in 1972 on the Polydor label, this harder edged Prog-Rock collection introduced the now familiar Earth Band logo on the cover while boasting two decent sized album radio hits with "Meat" and another reading from the Bob Dylan catalog with "It's All Over Now Baby Blue." Mick Rodgers vocals and guitar work really shine on these tracks as well as throughout the entire album. Two of the most intriguing pieces "Ashes To The Wind" and "Wind" truly captivate the listener as Manfred Mann's interplay with the entire band proved the true showmanship of this successful quartet.

Through their good friends at Creature Music , Friday Music is proud to present the second release in the Manfred Mann's Earth Band re-issue series with the long sought after Glorified Magnified. Mann collectors will rejoice with the terrific line-up of classic tracks from this timeless Prog-Rock album. With Glorified Magnified, you too can rediscover the magic that has been rocking audiences worldwide for over three decades.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Early Earth Band Classic.......2007-02-02

I was first introduced to Manfred Mann's Earth Band when listening to an FM radio station that played a feature album every night. It was 1973 and the album "Solar Fire" captivated me. After discovering the magic of "Solar Fire," all previous Earth Band albums were soon added to my collection. To this day, "Glorified Magnified" remains one of my favorites. The album has a less polished sound as compared with later releases, but this was a band breaking new ground in 1972. Their unique sound found itself on this album and led to at least 5 later releases that were each of high quality. This may not be an ideal starting point for a new Earth Band fan, but if you grow to love their wonderful brand of progressive rock ("Solar Fire" or "Nightengales and Bombers" would be good albums on which to begin your Earth Band listening), you will want to add this album to your collection.

2 out of 5 stars For the completist.......2006-10-12

This album is not up to the standards of "The Roaring Silence," "Messin,", "Nightingales & Bombers," and the self-titled album, all of which I rate 4-5 stars. The sound quality is muddy, too.

5 out of 5 stars may wolves stalk your stereo.......2000-04-20

injustice. maximum bold-faced injustice that this album is not resting comfortably in millions of homes the world over. every day, uncountable children go to bed hungry at night. and if all the money that's sent to feed them went instead to this band, then maybe ther'd be some justice. but not yet.

5 out of 5 stars not as good as fantastic planet, but not far off.......1999-11-06

this was the first failure cd i ever heard, and a good one to start off with.. it has a few of their very best songs like frogs, bernie and wet gravity, and it seems to have this strange feel to it, like youre really exploring something different.. the mood is one of acceptance, yet uneasiness, and ken andrews vocals heighten that feeling as he leads u down a somewhat dark path into his emotions... the sound of failure is quite heavy especially due to the distorted bass ... some songs have a great explosive conclusion like bernie and wet gravity, and some are quick pounders like let it drip and magnified.. this album has some really interesting thought provoking lyrics as well... i would say this album ranks as one of the better albums of the decade... a good one to start off with, but also pick up fantastic planet.. it is magnified and so much more..

5 out of 5 stars this rocks HARD........1999-05-04

ok, alright, enough with comparing this record to Fantastic Planet. How many albums aren't dwarfed by the all encompassing juggernaut of raw goodness that album brings forth? The fact is that Magnified is an incredible album. It only has 10 tracks when compared to FP's 17, but every song is great. There's nothin' like good ol Ken's voice a-wailin over that fuzzy bass! geez man, "frogs" is THE stuff, and the end of "bernie" is enough to make a grown man cry! plus the drums on "wet gravity" are insane!! If you like to hear it when a band rocks, then buy this fer sure.

5 out of 5 stars Not your typical 2nd album...........1999-03-29

Magnified is one of the best records that I have heard, despite what the critical people say. When I listen to this record, all thought vanishes from my mind. My personal favorite song on this record would have to be Undone, with its strangely suggestive lyrics and a very catchy tune. I appreciate the drum work throughout the album. This one is surely a good listen.

4 out of 5 stars Better than "average".......1998-09-21

This album is much better than the "average" rating some may give it. As a member of the Failure Mailing list, I felt like I had to set the record straight. Comfort has a garage-rock feel to it, while Fantastic Planet has a space-rock feel. Magnified is the much-needed middle record, the record where real music-writing and -making comes to light. Long live Failure!

5 out of 5 stars Some of their greatest techno-rock.......2007-07-11

When Manfred Mann went from top 10 pop to hard rock they did well. Few people know that. This is one of the classics with Mick Andrews and Manfred making the guitar and synthesiser work together in a way no one else could, or has since then. I think they were way ahead of their time. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars My second favorite Earth Band album.......2002-07-26

1973's Solar Fire being my very favorite. Anyway, Glorified Magnified was the second Earth Band album, released later in 1972, same year as their debut. I think Glorified is quite an improvement over the debut. For one thing, the music is heavier, and there's no songs like "Part Time Man" or "I'm Up and I'm Leaving" which is a plus in my book. I am rather surprised how much of this album bears an unstriking resemblance to Solar Fire, two albums later. Particularly "Meat" (which sounds like a precursor to "Earth, the Circle", particularly the drumming), "Look Around", "I'm Gonna Have You All" and "Our Friend George". So if you like Solar Fire, you're bound to enjoy those songs. "One Way Glass" is actually a remake of a song that appeared on Manfred Mann's Chapter III debut album from 1969, only of course, done in Earth Band style (guitars and synthesizers, rather than horns). "Down Home" is a more straighforward piece, and has, well, a down-home flavor to it. Plus there's a remake of a Dylan song, in this case, "It's All Over Now Baby Blue". The last cut is the title track, it's an instrumental cut, showing off Mann's talents on Moog and organ, and is not unlike "Waiter, There's A Yawn in my Ear" off The Roaring Silence. Great album, and the only reason why I give it a four star, was I feel Solar Fire is the best Earth Band album, which you should start there.

      3 out of 5 stars 70's Mann Rocks!.......1999-04-14

I am fond of this album, which comes from the best period of the Mann band. Their self-titled Manfred Mann's Earth Band, was the finest album of 1972, and Get Your Rocks Off, the next year, was as brash and fun as its title suggests. This album, from '72, isn't as good, but you take what you can get.

      3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars.......2000-09-04

A very good album by a very promising new band. The songs are well written and Andy Shaw's guitar is definitely worth noting. The drums pound with tremendous energy, Lehman's vocal's, although not amazing, fit the music perfectly. Magnified has definitely been influenced by "Failure", but they really have their own sound. The songs are more hook-laden, and poppy. This cd has earned itself a constant rotation in my player. There are only a couple misshits here, but they're not terrible, they just drag a little. Overall, this is definitely worth you're hard earned money.

Oh yeah, their live show is absolutely incredible. Check them out in concert if you can.

      4 out of 5 stars Continued.......2000-06-21

This band is amazing and very original. The blaring guitars and incredibly catchy vocals make this one of my favorite new albums. It doesn't sound much like Failure (if you know the band) in the sense that it is much more upbeat, and less melancholy. But, like Failure, it has a futuristic-spaced out style to it. If there is any instance in which the bands show musical similarity, is if you compare some of Magnified's songs to "pillowhead" on Fantastic planet. But hey, this is a great cd, and something that should be in any rock fan's collection. And I should stop comparing it to other bands, because it is unlike almost anything on the radio today. Not that it is strange or anything, but instead the opposite. It is rock in its purest form, instead with added effects that make it seem futuristic.

      4 out of 5 stars incredible debut.......2000-06-14

This is a very solid album these guys have put out. I kind of bought this on a whim, I was given a promo cd by one of the members at a foo fighters concert, listened to it, and loved the song. So here I am after buy the real cd. And i don't have anything bad to say about it. The guitar sound is incredible, the vocals are melodic and catchy. So the question is, "Why haven't I heard of this band? Well, they released they debut on May 16th if I remember correctly. And they've just started to gather a fan base in the San Fran area. This album will most likely be huge on college radio. Possibly go gold. Platinum success wouldn't suprise me, but they need some really good promotion from radio stations and mtv. I don't know if that will happen. If they come out with another album like this for their sophomore effort, It is most likely that they will get the recognition and status they deserve. But hey, its a great cd, and anyone should own it. The sound is a bit familiar to Failure. If you enjoy there sound, it is most likely that you will enjoy magnified. Oh by the way, Magnified was the title of a Failure album....coincidence, probably not.. However, this is not a cheap imitation of Failure. It is probably influenced a lot by them, the general formula is the same, but it also tends to be very original and creative. A great buy..

5 out of 5 stars A new fan from S.J........2000-05-22

I heard this one in a listening station in a real-world store, and had to buy it. Since then, I've carried it everywhere in my CD bag. You'll find yourself singing along to these songs, with infectious melodies and choruses. A great sound, a great CD. My friend keeps requesting their well-done cover of Joe Jackson's "Is She Really Going Out With Him!" A good deal.

4 out of 5 stars Guitar rock with solid songwriting.......2000-04-13

For those of us who can't stand DJs as rock stars, and who still groove on rock bands that pen solid hooks with trusty guitars, this is a band worth noting. Great layered production and infectious guitar work make this CD a great listen and Lehman's lyrics will certainly strike a chord in your soul. These guys help keep the dwindling scene here in SF interesting and fun, without being too serious or full of themsleves. Get this one now before they're too big!

2 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST AUDIO VERSION AVAILABLE.......2006-06-14

The MMEB catalog has been remastered for this 2005 LP-mini-sleeve series, but, unfortunately, the results are not up to par with the 1999 Cohesion remasters.

When A/B'ing both versions, the Cohesion discs have more definition and clarity, most notably in the persussion.

So, the only reason for paying this high price is for the mini-sleeve itself. As most of the original MMEB LP releases were pretty simple cover designs, there isn't much justification for spending 3-4X over the Cohesion jewel-cased versions.

this was the first failure cd i ever heard, and a good one to start off with.. it has a few of their very best songs like frogs, bernie and wet gravity, and it seems to have this strange feel to it, like youre really exploring something different.. the mood is one of acceptance, yet uneasiness, and ken andrews vocals heighten that feeling as he leads u down a somewhat dark path into his emotions... the sound of failure is quite heavy especially due to the distorted bass ... some songs have a great explosive conclusion like bernie and wet gravity, and some are quick pounders like let it drip and magnified.. this album has some really interesting thought provoking lyrics as well... i would say this album ranks as one of the better albums of the decade... a good one to start off with, but also pick up fantastic planet.. it is magnified and so much more..
