If you need an early example of Cat Stevens's creative and spiritual restlessness, you needn't look further than this 1973 release. Following on the heels of worldwide successes such as Tea for the Tillerman, Mona Bone Jakon, and Teaser and the Firecat, the self-produced Foreigner must have been a jolt to fans of Stevens's melodic, often whimsical folk-pop songs. With a musically ambitious 18-minute title suite that seems more influenced by the ornate prog rock of contemporaries like Yes, Jethro Tull, and ELP, Stevens arguably reached beyond his grasp. Though the hit "The Hurt" hearkens back to earlier works, there's a musical aimlessness (particularly in the melodies) in the remaining three songs that seems very out of character with Stevens's typically incisive lyrics. It's an album of sometimes intriguing fragments that seems to lack the disciplined framework that might have brought them into focus. --Jerry McCulley

On the cover of Foreigner's newest collection, the letters that spell out Complete Greatest Hits are cut out from world currency. For example, there's an A from Antarctica, a T from Trinidad, an M from Mongolia, and so on. At least the drive behind this third greatest-hits compilation (fourth, if you count The Best of Foreigner Live) is clearly admitted. Still, if anyone deserves your money, an argument can be made for guitarist Mick Jones and singer Lou Gramm. They've been through it all, and along the way, they've written a slew of songs you know well enough to perform at karaoke (but never as well, admittedly--Lou has a hell of a voice). Whether you liked them when they rocked ("Cold as Ice," "Hot Blooded," "Juke Box Hero") or preferred the power ballads they were credited with inventing ("Waiting for a Girl Like You," "I Want to Know What Love Is"), this album makes it feel like the very first time again. --Laura Etling

2 out of 5 stars Kind of Cheesy.......2007-07-04

I was just a so-so fan but thought that buying the collection might make me into an avid fan. Not so. The tunes are original and kind of catchy, but frankly the production quality is low. My 10 year old said, "What's wrong with the music?" because it just doesn't have the quality of current recordings. So I would stay away unless you are already a really big fan.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Rock and Roll.......2007-07-03

Great compilation of Foreigner's stuff and just a great album to listen to. 1 1/4 hours of good rock. Even though it's pretty long, the listener has no trouble just putting it in the player and letting it go. No boring fill anywhere at all.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Foreigner.......2007-05-25

This CD takes you back to the days of riding around in a car full of friends, circling the same old parking lots over and over looking for hot guys / gals and even hotter parties. Gotta love those early 80's...we were all HOT BLOODED!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding recording!.......2007-05-15

If you like Foreigner like I like Foreigner, than this collection is a must for you! The sound is clear, crisp and direct. The vocals are excellent and I find this CD enjoyable many times over. A great buy!

5 out of 5 stars Foreigner's Best (the first).......2007-07-04

Upon first hearing this album these six guys just blew you away with their simple sound and great harmonies. Yeah, it's commercial rock or whatever you want to call it, but they did it well and there's not a bad song on this album. Throw in Mick Jones on lead vocals for one of the songs, which carried over to their follow-up albums and you just had a winning combination. Lou Gramm had a very distinct sound which made this great listening too. But, as is the case, sometimes a group's debut is their best because it's so difficult to top. It would be quite a few albums and line-up changes before Foreigner found this success again. If you don't own this album and love classic rock, you're sure to love the entire album and not just the radio staples that are present here.

5 out of 5 stars An All Time Classic Album, Plus Some!.......2006-12-17

Foreigner is a band that has some of the elements of your great instrumental bands like Steely Dan, Yes, Styx, ELO, Queen, and Boston, but manages to be more commercial. The strength of Foreigner is that the band does not over-dominate the vocalist, as well as stronger lyrics.

This CD adds four demos to the mix, including of the classic "Feels Like The First Time." The differences are obvious to even the undiscerning ear (such as the acoustic intro rather than the traditional electric, or the change in the group's melody on the chorus). I can see why the changes were made, but it was enjoyable to hear the differences.

My favorite tracks are "Feels Like The First Time", "Starrider", "Long, Long Way From Home", "Woman Oh Woman", and "I Need You."

5 out of 5 stars Foreigner's Debut Is One Of Their Best.......2006-11-26

Foreigner's self-titled debut is one of their best ever. This CD includes the original debut album, which, despite a couple of missteps, is generally consistent, along with early demos of some of the album's best songs. This reissue, just as with all of the 2002 Foreigner reissues, shows that Rhino Records cares enough to do proper justice to a band whose leading lights, Mick Jones and Lou Gramm, currently advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as increased funding for law enforcement. I would point out highlights, but as the album is very consistent overall, that would be like crying "Fire!" in a crowded movie theater.

3 out of 5 stars The Best Was Yet To Come.......2006-10-14

This was a really good debut, but as far as entire albums go this was not the best. It does have the songs that put them on the map in Feels Like The First Time, Cold As Ice, and Long, Long Way From Home. The rest of the songs are also good but don't get the play they deserve. But this is not even close to their best album. It was however, a good start. 4 and Double Vision are better albums all the way through. Foreigner is just a great band so if you like them you will like this album because it is good just not the best.

Album Description

One of the top bands of the '70s and '80s, Foreigner-powered by Mick Jones' primal guitar and Lou Gramm's indelible vocals-became arena rock superstars with over two decades of hits and more than 50 million in record sales. The group's signature songs are cornerstones of the classic rock canon, and their worldwide success, beginning with their 1977 self-titled debut album, now over 4X platinum, towers above most bands of their era. With six consecutive albums in Billboard's Top 10-four of them Top 5-Foreigner's driving, hard-edged but soulful sound is as urgent as ever, and their "Hot Blooded" legacy has never sounded better than on Rhino's new 2-CD Definitive Collection of their top hits and greatest tracks.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars NEVER SOUNDED BETTER!.......2007-05-09

I have never bought a Foreigner album-they were so ubiquitous on the radio waves- but I came across this
double set at a reasonable price and decided to bite. I'm glad I did. The sound on both cds is the best I have
heard on any cd I own, and it's like hearing the songs for the first time (no pun intended). I had thought about
getting a Foreigner cd for some time-mainly for the songs on side 2-but resisted until I saw that this collection
contained the long lost album cut "Starrider". A truly enjoyable guilty pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars A Decent Collection that really gives you more stuff!.......2007-04-10

I really like what Rhino's been doing recently with their re-releases/adjustments of bands greatest hits packages. They just seem to be getting it right in most cases and for we fans who enjoy the essentials so to speak, these best of's are what we want and all we need. Black Sabbath's Sympton Of the Universe release was great and some of the ELP stuff been very good as well. So bring it on Rhino!

Rhino seems to be giving us the listener, a well rounded choice of what we'd like to hear. These very nicely remastered classics are better than ever. Sound quality is very good and they seem to be focusing on the older material or shall I say the good stuff and staying away from the fluff.

Yes it's yet another Hits package, but I really like this one as it gives you more of the older tunes that haven't been showing up on most of the Foreigner greatest hits compilations.

It's just a good listen all around!

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection Of Hits.......2007-02-20

This double disk set contains some of their best hits plus some hits from Lou Gramm and Mick Jones' solo efforts. Of course there has been other greatest hits collections from this band. This one is just another one to choose from. If another collection has nine more hits, go for that one if you recognize them. Does this one have a superior sound quality because it is the most recent greatest hits remastered? probably. I recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Disregard *$#&!!* Head's review!!!!.......2006-12-17

Why would someone review a band that they hate, to mislead others???? Ignore reviews from immature-stupid-for-life-fools like that! Enjoy this great band that has left its imprint upon great music!

5 out of 5 stars "There are no words, I can use, because the meaning, I still leave for you to choose".......2007-07-19

Luis Mejia (son) - we have to accept that it won't get better after Tea For The Tillerman and Teaser and The Fire Cat, but this album is excellent in his own special way!

It's an awesome experimentation, but just because of that it left some wide open critics about the album, but don't get confused it's so nice and also without loosing his classic sounds. The Album has some very beautiful and changing mellodies, a rythm hard to describe in other albums, containing very comprehensible (and still very complex) compositions and a high level of orginality.

The first track Foreigner Suite is of course the greatest track in the album, being a song that is constantly changing it's rythm and full of sweet mellodies, it last 18 minutes so you can enjoy it for a long time without getting bored, although it seems to go nowhere. The Hurt is the second best track, very catchy and comfortable, keeping a lot of his classic sounds. How Many Times is a good track, a little bit unmellodic but nice as well, dominated mainly by a piano. Later is another incredible track wich is a little bit dramatic and with that romantic flavour classic from Cat Stevens. 100 I Dream is my least favorite, the composition is ok but its too noicy.

The only wrong aspect that I saw in this album was the poor production they applied.

In conclussion, the cd is an incredible experimentation with its mellodic, changing moods its worth the purchase. Not dissapointing at all.

5 out of 5 stars Cat Stevens - Foreigner.......2007-04-10

I LOVE this CD! I'm SO glad to have found it on Amazon. I used to have this music on an 8-track cassette. It's even better now!

5 out of 5 stars One of my great "finds" .......2007-03-16

There are very few singer-songwriters who have a unique sound and a substantial body of work. After years of TV commercials for Cat Stevens, this young reviewer (23 years old) got pretty sick of hearing the sound of Cat Stevens' songs in 15-second segments. With the soundtrack to Harold and Maude, I began to love Cat Steven's unique phrasing and personal writing style. I heard the major albums, which are great, but I found a real gem with Foreigner. The first side is an interesting experiment that sounds grandiose today (though the recordings/engineering on this album are wonderful in general). His thoughts are allowed to flow in this longer piece, which allows Cat's songwriting to "breathe" and ramble outside the constraints of radio-ready singles. The second side is great as well. There are shorter songs, but they are murky and enigmatic, showing a dark side of Cat. My favorite track is "How Many Times," a really gut-wrenchingly soulful piece about the monotony of a life without meaning.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Cat Stevens.......2006-03-03

This is Cat Stevens in his own essence!
The pure pleasure of hearing nice music!

2 out of 5 stars Like Old Navy, minus the clothes.......2005-06-20

This album lacks the healtfelt honesty of his early work, and lacks the creative energy of his later work. If you enjoy R&B/soul then you might enjoy it. If you like Cat's early work, you will probably dislike this album. There's very few songs, and none of the songs stick out. I especially dislike the record-length-long "Foreigner Suite". It doesn't seem to go anywhere, and is filled with generic sounding instrumentals. This album doesn't sound like Cat Stevens, it sounds like something you'd hear in Old Navy.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS CLASSIC ROCK .......2007-02-13

In my estimation there are only a few "Classic Rock" (Pop-Rock) albums from the 80's that are worth owning, this is one of them, I have it, and you should too. Sure, there are other good Pop-Rock albums from the 80's, but most I can't stomach in their entirety, as very few stand the test of time. There are no bad songs on this album, and in fact they are all excellent, and not just excellent for their time, but excellent for today. It's now 2007 and this album from 1981 never sounds corny or shrill to me, as so many albums from the 80's do, this album stands the test of time. I certainly think that the listenability of "4" is in large part due to the fact that John "Mutt" Lange was brought in to produce the album, who is arguably the best Rock producer of all time. Yeah, I know Mick Jones was co-producer, but I have no doubt that Lange is the reason "4" turned out to be the revered "Classic Rock" album it is. To date "4" has sold more than six million copies in the US, which is almost as many copies sold as AC/DC's "Highway To Hell", which Lange also produced. How can you argue with six million copies sold, this is a very good album.

5 out of 5 stars freigner for nice guys........2007-02-06

Wow I just caanot belive how people really hate Foreigner and rate for trash like Beatles,Slayer,Pantera,Pearl Jam. Foreigner were one of the finest rock bands to ever make music in the 70s and 80s. They made several excellent songs like Waiting For A Girl Like You which remains to be one of my favorite songs ever and a wonderful nice power ballad song to sing or dance along to. I would suggest you buy this excellent album as it contains songs you will really love like Waiting For A Girl Like You .. Girl On The Moon which are my favorite songs. Only nice people listen to Foreigner. Slayer is for bad people. Buy this excellence with Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here.

PS. Lou Gramm is a great singer.

I love this song very much ever and I will always love this song and play it sometimes maybe a lot. I really fell in huge love with this song a couple times last year and I still love it. This song is also a very nice ballad that is so cryless and I love it so dearly. There are not too many good power ballads out there a lot of them make me cry but this song never makes me cry I always feel very happy. I highly recommend this song and always wish i could give it more than 5 stars.
PS. Waiting For A Girl Like You-I love you very, very, very much can i fall in love with you please?

4 out of 5 stars VERY transitory Foreigner - still, my fave.......2007-05-19

With Rick Wills on bass, Roy Thomas Baker, the producer, and that GREAT album cover, "Headgames" had a heckuva lot going for it. Unfortunately, this is where Mick Jones' ego began to run rampant (indeed, "Headgames" is the final Foreigner album with keyboardists Al Greenwood and Ian McDonald.) Jones was - and is - a great guitarist, but on keyboards.............EH........

5 out of 5 stars FOREIGNER ARE THE GREATEST.......2006-12-16

Hey hey babe!!

Foreigner are the best! Lou Gramm is the best singer who can sing like a real singer and he can sing a billion times better than Robert Plant who just sounds like a baby.

All their albums are wonderful.

My favorite song of all time is Waiting For A Girl Like You.

Head Games is their best along with 4 Double Vision and debut

Foreigner are the best

5 out of 5 stars Foreigner's Heaviest Album.......2006-11-26

HEAD GAMES is Foreigner's heaviest album ever. Apparently, Lou Gramm and Mick Jones had decided that they shared the views that artist such as Ted Nugent and the Outlaws held on law enforcement, so they decided to incorporate those influences, along with that of the Steve Miller Band, a bit more on this album than they had on the first two. This album has come under fire for its extremely sexist cover and the alleged racism of the song "Dirty White Boy", and has been somewhat underrated because of its failure to sell as many copies as its two predecessors (one young woman I knew never got asked for a dance to it until she started using Proactiv Solution for just those reasons), but it is just as good as the first two and 4. The reissue has just one bonus cut, which may be due to it being the black sheep of the band's catalog, but it nevertheless proves that Rhino Records cares enough to do justice to a band whose two lead members, Gramm and Jones, currently advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as increased funding for law enforcement.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Foreigner 4.......2006-06-20

I know this didn't get anywhere near the sales as Foreigner4 did, but in my opinion HEAD GAMES is light years better than 4. At least it didn't have songs like the extremely poppy "Juke Box Hero" and "Urgent". I believe it got just a little over a million sales and I can't really explain that but it should have sold 4 million in my opinion. "Head Games" is just about at the top of the heap as far as Foreigner songs go. That track just really gets my blood pumping, if you know what I mean? Mick Jones lambasted this album in a few interviews but the idiot just loves Foreigner 4. Even an individual who makes the music can't even judge his albums correctly. This album is just chaulked full of great tunes but I could do without the song "Women" because it's pretty derogatory towards women, but it still is decent musically. I love "Modern Day", "Blinded By Science", "I'll Get Even With You", "Seventeen", "Love On The Telephone", and "Rev On The Red Line". I think you're a little nuts if you think this is worse than Foreigner4. This would definitely be a fine disc for a first Foreigner purchase. Enjoy!!!

2 out of 5 stars A bit middle of the road.......2007-03-14

As with a lot of Foreigners works, they tend to overlook their strong-points and focus too much on "intellignet pop". This is definitely one of those albums.

it begins with a blistering rocker "Hot Blooded" which is one of their most popular tracks to this day. Although it's very Lennonesque, the spacey "I have waited to long", sung by Mick Jones, is another highlight, a really beautiful song. The closing track, "Spellbinder" is a bit of a token-rocker but at least it rocks. The instrumental "Tramontane" is interesting.

Between that, there are a lot of maudlin love-ballads about being such a lovely-romantic man whose mistreated by a nasty girl. It's an overdone theme in rock. I mean "Love has taken it's toll" and "Blue Morning" have some grit but"back where you belong" is realy maudlin and melancholy. The ballad "You're all I am" is pretty typical and overly-sugary.

With this album they seemed to reach for a more Beatlesque sound rather than a hard-rock - prog fusion. It doesn't have the grit of their better albums. Still, there are a few good tracks, I'd rate it at about 4 / 10, maybe slightly more.

5 out of 5 stars Foreigner Avoids The Sophmore Jinx.......2006-11-26

With DOUBLE VISION, Foreigner avoids the sophmore jinx, by adding the influences of such pro-law-enforcement guitar bands as Ted Nugent and the Outlaws, resulting in a heavier album than the debut. A couple of the ballads drag a bit, but the album as a whole is totally consistent, to the point where, in my view, discussion of specific highlights is not protected by the Constitution. Of the two bonus cuts, the live version of "Hot Blooded" is totally smokin', but the version of the soul standard "Love Maker" adds nothing. Any band whose two leading lights (Lou Gramm and Mick Jones) advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as increased funding for law enforcement, deserves nothing but the best that their reissue label (in this case Rhino) can give them.

1 out of 5 stars Lame.......2006-07-26

This should ONLY be used as a reminder of how bad the 70's worst excesses were. Avoid. BTW, 'Hot Blooded' blows chunks.

5 out of 5 stars Great sophomore effort by Foreigner.......2006-06-20

This second album by Foreigner is probably their best effort and a bit better than the self titled debut. I remember playing this on my high powered car cassette deck back in the very early 80's. It sounded so awesome in my Ford Grand Torino, cruising the streets of Wichita when I was in high school. This is their only release that doesn't seem to have any filler on it whatsoever. The ones I like the most are the songs like "Back Where You Belong", "I Have Waited So Long", "You're All I Am", "Love Has Taken It's Toll", and "Lonely Children". I can't believe that DOUBLE VISION only has four reviews here on Amazon when other great albums have close to a hundred or more. "Come up with some reviews Foreigner fans"!!! If you've been thinking of buying some discs by this supergroup, Double Vision is the perfect cd to start out with. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great sophomore album.......2005-09-03

This was Foreigner's second album and there was no let down from the first. This is another collection of well-written rock songs. Melodies you can sing along to, guitar riffs you can play air guitar with and Lou Gramm's amazing voice. "Hot Blooded" and "Double Vision" were the big hits but there honestly isn't a bad song on the CD. Even the instrumental, "Tramontane" is an excellent song, eery and haunting. They also did a nice job with their ballads, slowed them down, but still made them a rock n' roll song. A great CD.

Featuring three new tracks and liner notes, The Very Best attempts to bring Foreigner into the '90s as a viable, working band. Problem is, the most convincing songs here are those recorded during the band's first four albums when they were young and, if not hungry, at least not played out. "Jukebox Hero," "Hot Blooded," "Head Games," and "Cold As Ice" all sound as ripe and ready for radio as the day they were released. Singer Lou Gramm gave Foreigner its face and with the counterpunch of ex-Spooky Tooth guitarist Mick Jones proved a formidable team. The inclusion of their gospel-influenced hit "I Want to Know What Love Is" is the only addition from the 10-cut greatest hits album Records. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars SOLID CD.......2007-03-05

some reviewer gave this disc 1 star! Gee, 1 whole star?! Obviously that person is no Foreigner fan. Foreigner put out some great music in their heyday and a lot of those cuts are found here. Lou Gramm is one of the great rock voices and he's well represented here. For those not familiar with the band this is a good CD to get your feet wet. The 1 star reviewer is entitled to his opinion but it isn't a very good one at that. This is a solid disc.

4 out of 5 stars Not so foreign at all..........2007-02-05

Foreigner is not one of my favorite musical artists, but I do like most of their hits. I bought this CD to get my 2 favorites, "Waiting For A Girl Like You" and "Urgent". "Waiting" is like something out of a beautiful, hazy dream, and "Urgent" is hot, hot, hot, especially with that sax. I also like "Juke Box Hero", "Double Vision", "That Was Yesterday" and, of course, "I Want To Know What Love Is". The CD kicks off with 3 newer cuts that were not hits (to my knowledge), and they are OK, but they sound a little forced, as if the idea was to make new songs that sound just like the old hits. They're not bad, just not very inspiring. On the other hand, some songs that I didn't love that much back in the 70's sound really good on this CD, such as "Cold As Ice" and "Head Games". So, all in all this is a fun way to revisit the mid-70's to mid-80's, and if you like guitar-based rock, I would recommend it. I can't think of one hit that was left out of this collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Below One Star Reviewer Is A Huge Moron!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-29

To the reviewer known as T FOR TEXAS,

Your opinion about Foreigner is not required. The bands that you hate so much are like Dire Straits, and Foreigner are equally great. The bands that you love so much such as AC/DC, Queen, and The Who are equally bad!! So start liking them now or go straight to HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The below 1 star reviewer is from India, where Foreigner albums aren't even available. I wish this little twerp can stay away from all the American websites. He is getting me on my nerves fast and when this wannable yankee he said "Waiting for a Girl Like You is one of the most idiotic songs I have ever heard". Get him out of here!!!!!!!!!

Foreigner are one of my favourite bands of all time. "Waiting for a Girl Like You" is one of the most finest, mellow, nicest, loveliest, gorgeous, marvelous, superb, terrific, great, and prettiest song I have ever heard.
I think it is my all-time favorite song. The Very Best And Beyond is a great collection of Foreigner songs, WITHOUT EDITING!!!!!!!!! Other hits like "Juke Box Hero", "Urgent", "Cold As Ice", "I Don't Want To Live Without You", and "Dirty White Boy" are all equally great. Please buy this which will make you happy. Please ignore the below negative one star reviewer, he will get you all frustrated. He is a really bad music lover.
Get this with all albums from Dire Straits.

I love Foreigner as they were one of the greatest. They were the gods of love songs and they are talented. My favorite songs are Waiting For A Girl Like You, and I Dont Want To Live Without You. Those 2 songs are just sweet, nice, beautiful, and very lovely. This is a billion times much better than lousy bands like Metallica, AC/DC, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, and Green Day. I love this CD. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars one of best from foreigner.......2007-01-11

do you want to know what love is, well this is the cd you need.
like the music from this group, this is one of the best that's why you don't find it no where, no even in the stores any more. must if you like this group and must have for your collection.

2 out of 5 stars Overrated Song........2006-12-22

I easily could not understand why that song 'I Want To Know What Love Is' is Foreigner's top song as it is pretty boring. It is one of the most boring songs Foreigner has ever put up and maybe one of the most saddest boring songs ever made in the 1980s. After the first lovely ballad 'Waiting For A Girl Like You' (which I loved that one very, very much) they did their next few ballads even more worse. They even did 'I Dont Want To Live Without You' even sadder. What is wrong with them in the 1980s? 4 was their last of their classics to have been the greatest. In the end of 'I Want To Know What Love Is' for about 2 minutes, it repeats the same verse such as 'I Wanna know what love is, i want you to show meeeee' which gets really annoying after 2 minutes. I kind of wish that 'Waiting For A Girl Like You' would be their number 1 song insted which that song is never boring, it is more of a ballad and love song too. I went to one of Foreigner's concerts several months ago and they did not play this boring song, they played my favorite song 'Waiting For A Girl Like You' which I was so happy when they played that as that is so loveely. Don't buy this, get 4 insted.

2 out of 5 stars Except for the two hits, this is total swill to me.......2006-06-20

I bought this not long after it came out in 1984 but got rid of it quick because it was so bad. Don't listen to the reviewer Darth Kommissar who said that this was severely underrated. It's not thought of very highly for a reason. The only thing that I like a lot from this album is the song "That Was Yesterday". I can kind of stomach the song "I Want to know what love is", but it's a little to syrupy and sweet for my taste. So basically those two tunes bring this review rating up to two stars. I hate the song "Tooth And Nail" and I think there's another song called "Reaction to Action" that's very bad too. Just stick with the albums from 1977 to 1981 because everything that came after was definitely substandard.

4 out of 5 stars Foreigner really can rock.......2005-07-08

Forget any bad words against this album being synth-pop or eighties music or whatever, the fact is this is stomping rock that makes you feel good. The best track in my opinion has to be 'Reaction to action', that's such a fantastic rocker. Lou Gramm is perfect at playing that 'street-thug' personality. There's also some mellower soul searching songs on here, and a big ballad called 'I wanna know what love is'.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - Severely underrated.......2004-05-25

Agent Provocateur (1984.) Foreigner's fifth album.

Following the release of their 1981 album, 4, Foreigner took a break from recording for a while. The band had recorded four incredible classic rock albums, so they deserved a rest. By now, the spotlight had shifted elsewhere in the music industry, and the band wasn't nearly as popular as they once were. But this wasn't going to stop the band from rocking. In 1984, the band released its fifth studio album, Agent Provocateur. Read on for my review.

To put it in the simplest terms possible, this album is not up to the standards of the "classic four" Foreigner albums, but it's solid nonetheless. With this album (as well as the follow-up effort, Inside Information), the band shifted its sound toward something that fused classic rock with power rock. For the most part, the fusion of the two styles works. Although this album was never nearly as popular as the band's seventies albums or their early eighties effort 4, it DOES contain the band's biggest hit in terms of chart position - I Want To Know What Love Is. Sure, this song isn't the band's most popular song, but it's their only song to ever hit number one on the pop charts! Sadly though, it proved to be the only really popular song on the album. That's a shame, because it was far from being the only good one present. The opening rocker, Tooth And Nail, brings back memories of the band's earlier days. That Was Yesterday and Growing Up The Hard Way are interesting tracks in that they combine synthesizers with the band's usual rock stylings - and they greatly help the sound. The straight-up rock stylings of Reaction To Action make it another excellent song that is well worth listening to. From start to finish, Agent Provocateur is an excellent album. It doesn't top anything from the band's former days of glory, but it's still damn good.

THIS TEXT REFERS EXCLUSIVELY TO THE ORIGINAL AMERICAN CD RELEASE OF THE ALBUM, AND WAS WRITTEN ON MAY 25, 2004. Unlike the first four Foreigner albums, nothing the band recorded past 1981 has gotten the remastering and rereleasing treatment. This sucks, because these versions of the albums not only don't sound as good as the remasters of classic four albums, they also are out of print and difficult to find. If the record company can remaster and rerelease Foreigner, Double Vision, Head Games, and 4, and put bonus tracks on them, why can't they do the same for Agent Provocateur, Inside Information, Unusual Heat, and Mr. Moonlight? And who wants to hunt down these albums if their sound quality is weaker than the remasters and they don't contain bonus tracks? Obviously, no one but Foreigner die-hards.

In the end, Agent Provocateur is a damn fine classic eighties rock album. It's not the place for Foreigner newbies to start (they should start with the hits compilation, Complete Greatest Hits), but if you're a fan of the band and you want to see what they accomplished after their days of great fame, this is well worth picking up, and I think the overall quality of the album will surprise you.

2 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars- A pretty mediocre effort, but still is better than the previous studio album.......2006-06-20

I haven't owned this cd since about 1988 because it's just not the Foreigner that I came to know and love in the years 1977 to 1981. The only song that I like to listen to repeatedly is the song "Say You Will". That song is what Foreigner should sound like. Everything else is boring and mediocre. Unless you're a diehard Foreigner fanatic, you should just pass by INSIDE INFORMATION and just stick with their first four studio albums.

3 out of 5 stars Good album.......2006-04-20

This Foreigner album is a pretty good effort, they can write god songs. I know I wont be popular saying this but I personally prefer a harder edged album like 'Agent Provocateur' or 'Head Games' but this album shows the band can write a diverse array of styles, but I just feel they should focus more on what they do best. Sure, there aren't any bad songs on this album, they're all pretty good, but I think it's real brash hard-rock which is their best asset. This album is just a little too MOR for Foreigner. I mean I'm not saying they should only do hard-rock; 'Out of the blue' is a terrific song, and some of the other ballad's are pretty good too, but I feel their just should be more full-on rockers. That is, of-course, just my opinion. We do have 'beat of my heart' which is another kick-ass number. It's good music, but perhaps not my favourite of Foreigner.

5 out of 5 stars Out of the Blue....The Lost Single.......2005-11-03

I am not a big fan of Foreigner ballads, but "Out of the Blue" clearly is one of the best they produced. It was also the first time Jones, Gramm, Elliott and Willis wrote a song together.

The rest of the CD is superb. You won't be disappointed with "Can't Wait, "Beat of My Heart" and "A Night to Remember.

4 out of 5 stars Way better than it usually gets credit for........2004-09-17

It seems to me that most fans of Foreigner's heavier "classic rock" period hate the band's post-4 material. Other than "I Wanna Know What Love is" I never hear any of their mid 80's songs on the radio anymore.

That's a shame because I might be in the minority of those who prefer it to early Foreigner. Possibly that has to do with my growing up in the 80's (literally). It just strikes me as catchier and more heartfelt, both on the rockers and ballads.

If that's what you're looking for, INSIDE INFORMATION has it. Although there's definitely a few weak songs (Lou Gramm released his first solo album "Ready or Not" earlier the same year, so you kinda get the feeling he used up some of his better ideas and saved some leftovers for here - "Can't Wait" anyone? UGH!) it's a near flawless collection of 80's arena rock.

1. Heart Turns to Stone -- Kicking off the album is an energetic, semi hard rocker which became a minor hit. Despite the somewhat harsh lyrical theme of a woman leaving a man due to abuse, it's exactly the kind of passionate rock these guys are so good at.

2. Can't Wait -- Medium paced, very drum-based tune that never takes off and seems very dull and stuck, for lack of a better description. Curiously this seems to be a favorite among fans of this album, but I swear I'm never gonna understand why. Even the guitar solo (which finally breaks the monotony a bit) can't save this clunker.

3. Say You Will -- The first of two big hits, this one in the form of an emotional yet catchy pop/rock anthem (with a slight ballad tinge) basically telling a woman to make her mind up about who she wants to be with.

4. I Don't Want to Live Without You -- The only true hit to come off here. Since it's one of the songs that got me into the guys in the first place, it remains one of my favorites. A lite power ballad that manages to be both easygoing in sound and deeply emotional at the same time.

5. Counting Every Minute -- This hard rocker sounds like early Foreigner literally updated for 1987. Not unlike "Hot Blooded," it's very lust-ridden. Coming after the previous song, it might seem a bit out of place, since it's the heaviest song on here.

6. The title track is also a bit unique. Hidden behind its mid tempo rock sound is the story of a woman who has, well, "Inside Information" on things.

7. The Beat of My Heart -- Riff based rocker which is also one of the album's harder songs. In it, Lou tells a girl he'll always be there for her, even if she doesn't know or realize it.

8. Face to Face -- If there was a hit that got away, this would have to be it. This anthemic pop/rocker buried with tons of synths and keyboards -- and emotionally sung, concerning a failing relationship which they have to talk about, err -- is another very late 80's pop based gem.

9. Out of the Blue -- Other reviewers have said this would also have been a great single, and I gotta agree. The slightly uptempo, rock based second ballad is very synth heavy, and a little deeper and more emotional than "Don't Wanna Live..." but also happy, since it talks about suddenly falling in love.

10. A Night to Remember -- Another hard rocker, not unlike tracks 5 and 7, but this one is covered in more synths. A great way to close the album by having a song about partying, rocking, and "taking tonight, right to the end."

I think this is more evenly based than the band's previous release, 1984's AGENT PROVOCATEUR. That had mostly harsh rockers mixed in with soft, very synthesized ballads, making for a strange and uneven mix (though "That Was Yesterday" and "Growing Up the Hard Way" kind of bridged the gap).

Though I think their best individual songs came off "4" and "AP", this is their overall strongest album, even if a few songs lacked something special. Maybe the band should've waited until 1988/89 to release it, giving Lou's solo album a chance to breathe on its own and letting him come back to put more attention into this.

Ah well, as it is, just take off "Can't Wait" and you've got a 5 star album recommended especially to fans of Survivor, Journey and the lighter side of Van Halen. Even fans of straight late 80's pop could enjoy it too.
