All right, we know the Crowes are going to sound like the Stones, and by no means is this an insult. The question is, what era of Stones--the assured bluster and raunchy groove of Exile on Main Street or, gasp, the going-through-the-motions of Steel Wheels? Thankfully, their first studio effort in two and a half years tends mostly toward the former. The Robinson boys have actually managed to magnify both their gritty Southern soul (with funky keyboards and vibrant background chants) and their heavy-hitting majesty (with screeching guitar and thumping percussion) simultaneously--and there's still room for some appealing hooks. That's not to say that their songwriting has improved or that their musical vision has broadened considerably; innovation has never been their strong point anyway. At worst, By Your Side is still a big improvement over 1996's often listless Three Snakes and a Charm; at best, it's living proof that the classic Stones swagger--refracted through the Crowes' mounting years of experience--still holds significant sway. Being called the "Stones of the 1990s" is still a compliment (albeit a left-handed one), and at this point they do the Stones a damn sight better than the Stones themselves. --Marc Greilsamer

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:
Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.
Great CD.......2005-11-01
Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27
I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.
Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.
Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08
the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have
done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some
of which still show some of their age, but come across quite
well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this
disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to
get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any
more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to
try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's
early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.
If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!
The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07
I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.
I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

Sade Is NOT By My Side With This Crappy Song.......2006-01-14
By Your Side..........2004-04-01
The first time I heard this song playing, was when I was watching one of the ''Sex And The City'' episodes, and this song came on during one of the scenes, well I flew up from my chair, the song was so overwhelming, that the following week I had rushed out to the music store, and got myself the CD single.
Look...I am a fan of remixes, I have had allot of experiences with remixes and the ones included here are however nothing special. The CD features Neptune (who has also done a standard quantity of promo work for Alicia Keys and Madonna), he never really changes a song, all his mixes are just enhancements, with a few beats thrown in, hardly anything else is done, he makes a mix that would easily be considered as a (Edit).
The (Yard Mix) is however the weakest here, It's rather like R&B verses Trip-Hop <---Something bland and fake sounding.
The (Reggae Mix) is average...I don't really think this mix was a good idea, it's supposed to sound like reggae, whatever the hell they call it-----ehhhhh not so good.
I also do not understand something else. The cool remix that plays on the radio is not included here!!?....Ben Watt (From Everything But The Girl) made a real cool mix for this song, and (apparently) it is not commercial and was only a radio promo....Well to hell with that!.
The album version, is the best on this CD. This is the kind of song like (Madonna's ''Power Of Goodbye'') that is not for remixing, and not for the clubs or enhancements.
The only reason I'm giving this album 5 stars is for the (album version). Whoever decided to single out Ben Watt's remix- made a grave mistake, shame on you!.
Come on, I'm not dead yet!.......2003-08-14

The Crowes Worst Record..........2007-04-07
THE BEST BLACK CROWES STUDIO ALBUM EVER TO DATE........2007-03-13
THE BLACK CROWES have been continuing to burn hot on fire since they released their most recent album "THREE SNAKES AND ONE CHARM" in 1996. With their legendary performances before full houses due to their constant sell out concerts and diehard fans, the band was definitely enjoying the fruits to its fullest excesses and living the Rock n' Roll lifestyle to its fullest potential. All was well in THE BLACK CROWES world and was only appropriate and another good time for the band to head back into the recording studio and record another great follow-up album to the successful "THREE SNAKES AND ONE CHARM" album. After some time flew by, THE BLACK CROWES would emerge and evolve from the recording studio with a completed album and hand it in to their American Recordings Records label. The finished product would be released as the "BY YOUR SIDE" album from 1998. In my opinion, "BY YOUR SIDE" is their best studio album to date. This album truly kicks a*s. This legendary album is a true testament of the greatness and musical creativity of two brothers and a fine fitting tribute to a great band that is getting to the point where they are truly ahead of their time. This is THE BLACK CROWES at their absolute best people.
Enough of what I'm saying, its now time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary album begins with the fast paced Rocker "Go Faster," the kick a*s Rocker "Kickin' My Heart Around," the incredible good beated Rocker "By Your Side," the breathtaking and daring Rocker "HorseHead," the slow and beautiful Rocker "Only A Fool," the groundbreaking a*s kickin' Rocker "Heavy," the Christmas sounding Rod Stewart sounding slow smooth Rocker "Welcome To The Goodtimes," the blistering a*s kickin' Rocker "Go Tell The Congregation," the slow soothing Rocker "Diamond Ring," the loud and amazing Rocker "Then She Said My Name" and beautiful slow Rocker "Virtue And Vice." May I add and commend the band on a a*s kicking job well done. What can I say about Chris Robinson besides the fact that he kicked a*s on lead vocals. His blistering lead vocals are legendary on this album. Lets not forget the blistering and merciless guitar licks and riffs from Chris' brother Rich. He kicked a*s as well.
Overall, this is one hell of an album worth seeking further into and checking out whether you are a newcomer or a new beginner to the sound and music of THE BLACK CROWES or a devout BLACK CROWES collector or diehard. Either way, you will enjoy this album. Buy it.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. THIS IS ONE HELL OF AN ALBUM THAT NO DEVOUT BLACK CROWES COLLECTOR OR DIEHARD WOULD WANT TO BE WITHOUT.
In closing, THE BLACK CROWES HAVE REALLY DONE IT THIS TIME AND OVER DID IT IN THE PROCESS. This album is definitely their best studio album to date. Who would have believed that THE BLACK CROWES would have come out of left field and blow everybody away with the "BY YOUR SIDE" album. This is one Rockin' album. I feel sorry for the next follow-up album, "BY YOUR SIDE" is going to be extremely hard to top. With that in mind, there will be new stories and tales in THE BLACK CROWES legend and lagacy that will still need to be conquered, told and written in new pages and chapters in their glorious storied career. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further about it at a later date. So here's to you Chris, Rich, Steve, Eddie and Sven. Thanks for the great memories and still more to come. I'm still waiting for your new album to come out and be released this year in 2007, I CAN'T WAIT GUYS. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BLACK CROWES RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
Another GREAT CD by the BLACK CROWES!!!.......2005-07-20
Rock and Roll on your side........2005-06-03
In accordance with the upbeat songs, singer Chris Robinson, sounding great, adds more uplifting lyrics than usual. Great songs such as the title track and closer Virtue and Vice have a positive outlook. Though the songs are consistently good, there is a feeling of sameness however as so many of the songs contain a fast beat with a loud, almost thumping snare drum. So, though it may not have the depth of earlier albums, By Your Side is a rock and roll record that's overflowing with muscle and energy and there's nothing wrong with that.
Pretty good album, hideous production.......2004-10-23
Well, "By Your Side" is not a five-star album (unless you really want it to be), and it certainly isn't a one-star album either (unless you really, really want it to be). It is a decent rock n' roll record...not as good as the Crowes' first two records, but good enough to warrant a listen.
But the production is lousy. A noisy, discordant rhythm guitar with LOTS of overdrive keeps droning mindlessly away, threatening to drown out everything else, and resulting in a dense, muddled sound which makes almost every song sound the same. What a difference from the excellent, lean production on "$hake Your Moneymaker".
Most of the songs are okay, though, particularly the title track, "Kickin' My Heart Around", and the loose-limbed groove of "Only A Fool".
I liked the Crowes' first two albums a lot, particularly "$hake Your Moneymaker", and compared to those two, "By Your Side" is a disappointment. But there are enough good moments here for three stars (or maybe 2 3/4).
Mostly for dedicated Crowes fans, though. And what is with that production?! This isn't Nirvana!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

Based on Somerset Maugham's middling novel Theater, Annette Bening stars as the title character, an aging star of the London stage whose life and the melodramas she performs have come to mirror each other. Composer Mychael Danna sets those conflicts to a score that emphasizes theatrical surfaces and rigid role-playing, utilizing a finely honed classical pastiche approach with parallels to his previous period-evoking work on Vanity Fair. His cues here are rooted in the light romantic chamber music of the 19th century, though they frequently bristle with a more contemporary energy and aplomb. Offering counterpoint to Danna's dignified, oft-precious classical confections and mining the story's more sensual human dimensions are pop chestnuts from the era (The Andrews Sisters' saucy "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and Mills Brothers' jaunty "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"), as well as fine contemporary takes of "They Didn't Believe Me" and Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" by Denzel Sinclair and Alison Jicar's elegant read of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

--Marc GreilsamerAlbum Description
