A decade after his tragic, untimely demise, electric-blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan has left behind a void that remains largely unfilled, despite a number of ballyhooed young pretenders. The guitarist's career was long troubled by personal demons, and this album chronicles those deceptively languorous, slow blues jams where Vaughan did battle with them. The howling, fervent tone he coaxed from his instrument was a product of lessons learned only in the School of Hard Knocks, accompanied by a voice--perhaps the most underrated of Vaughan's talents--that perfectly underscored his tortured gospel. But those who stereotyped Vaughan as a paint-by-numbers bluesman misunderstood the breadth of his lexicon; listen to "Chitlins con Carne" (from the guitarist's posthumous The Sky Is Crying album) here and you'll hear tinges of Wes Montgomery and other jazz inflections. Especially notable are three previously unreleased cuts: a live version of "Texas Flood," a 1985 Montreux Jazz Festival duet-jam of "Tin Pan Alley" with the late Johnny Copeland, and an '84 outtake of Elmore James's "The Sky Is Crying"--plus a 15-minute TV-taping workout with Albert King on the elder legend's "Blues at Sunrise." Raw, passionate, and uncompromising, this is SRV at his gut-wrenching best. --Jerry McCulley

Great Rocking Blues. Take a Long ride in the Sierra Mountains and it will heal you.

5 out of 5 stars Should be 10 Stars.......2007-04-12

This is absolutely the best compilation of slow-tempo guitar-godlike blues I have ever heard. Every time I open my cabinet to listen to a CD, I cannot keep my hands off this album. If you like the blues and love to be blown away by amazing guitar playing and great songs, buy this album. This album is an abolute GOLD MINE of amazing tunes. It is easily my favorite SRV album. Don't even think about not buying this if you are a blues fan. You will be missing the greatest soulful, **s-kicking music SRV ever played. Treat yourself...buy this album and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "ADJUST YOUR STEREO, BUT IT'S NOT SRV'S FAULT!".......2007-01-22

If you know me, or have read any of my world famous blue's reviews, you'd have to wonder how I could rate anything by Stevie Ray under a five. Well, it's not SRV's fault or Shaq's. This is a digitally re-recorded CD that is not done well. It is not loud or clear. So to enjoy it, you better turn you stereo way, way up, and make sure when you're done, you turn it back down, or you will have a "FREAKIN" heart attack, when a regularly recorded CD plays. That being said, there is one song that should not be on this CD because it doesn't measure up to the company it's given, and that is #4 "Chitlins Con Carne". The rest are classic Stevie. What made me buy this CD, to add to my SRV collection was the 11-minute plus "Tin Pan Alley". As long as you accept the warning of the poor recording quality, and one song, that could have been replaced by any of 20 other SRV songs, I would say buy it.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing journey through the blues universe!.......2005-08-13

The brief existence of Steve Ray Vaughan meant a great loss not only for the guitar world but the blues. Vaughan owned a personal trademark for this genre, even he was a famed rock singer. His special dark vocal inflections, and his peculiar style added the blues a propulsive fresh breath.

The best track in my opinion is Texas flood, but the CD is absolutely rewarding from start to finish.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing new, but it's great anyway.......2004-07-15

Well, I felt a little bit bad about not actually reviewing the album...you can find my original "review" below, where I make myself interesting by pointing out that this is not new material but rather a collection of previously released songs (with the exception of "The Sky Is Crying", an outtake from the "Couldn't Stand The Weather" sessions, but that one also appereared on the similarly titled album of outtakes issued after Vaughan's tragic death, although that was a different take).

So if you're a tried and true SRV fan, you won't find anything new here...a live rendition of "Tin Pan Alley" doesn't really count. But if you only have, say, "Greatest Hits", this album would serve as a nice addition.
It brings together ten slow blues tunes, many of which are among Stevie Ray Vaughan's finest recordings, like the soulful opener "Ain't Gonna Give Up On Love", a swaggering rendition of Guitar Slim's "The Things That I Used To Do", and the smouldering slow burner "Dirty Pool".
The live "Tin Pan Alley" is top-notch as well. Lots of magnificent guitar playing, and an excellent, expressive vocal by Stevie Ray. His playing on "The Sky Is Crying" is equally superb, but if you've ever heard Elmore James' blistering original you'll probably find that Stevie Ray lacks a little bit of vocal power. If you haven't, you won't care one way or the other :o)

Again, longtime fans will find nothing here which they don't already own, but more casual listeners should enjoy "Blues At Sunrise". The quality of the material assembled here is sky-high all the way through, and it is a great testament to Stevie Ray Vaughan's abilities on the guitar. Only reason I'm deducting a star is the fact that this is really just a re-packaging of already issued material. And the liner notes are kinda brief as well.
But the music? Oh yeah, A+ from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Blues at Sunrise: Live at Montreux.......2006-02-26

This is a very well done live recording. Both the material and the sound quality are top notch. The only thing I found missing was some additional material from the festival not on this CD. For that one must get the "Blues at Sunset" CD that contains the rest of the set as well as more excellent recordings from the Wattstax concert.

5 out of 5 stars Albert is god!.......2005-11-27

We must praise albert king for this masterpiece! His guitar is very powerful and wild in this live performance!!!!!! Blues at Sunrise is between his best works!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars simply stunnig.......2005-10-17

what you're holding in your hand is one of the very best live blues album ever. I own quite a few albert's album but this one has always found a special place in my heart. Both the setlist and the performances are wonderful and it has my favourite version of i'll play the blues for you. After he says "exscuse me" he unveils a terrific solo that gets you realize what blues power is all about, the interplays with the horns section is stunning and the voice, man, the voice...if you gotta get just one album by this master get this one, you wont be disappointed

5 out of 5 stars Albert King's Once Lost Concert!.......2005-06-29

This concert was released after the return of Stax Records in the 1980s as a part of Fantasy Records. The initial release was the lost tape of Albert recording with John Mayall and his Jazz-Fusion band in California. This was put out as the "Lost Session". After another look in the newly recovered Stax vault (no pun intended!)tapes this concert was found. Two tracks had been previously released on vinyl as "Live at Montreux". This CD has most of the remaining part of this July 1, 1973 Montreux concert. The balance of this set can be found on the follow up release "Blues At Sunset" (1993).

This set is really different. Albert has a great band (with a subdued horn section). He also has Donald Kinsey (of the Kinsey Report) on guitar, who like Jimmy King, he calls his "grandson" (he liked to do that). Albert's playing is heavy, full and forceful. He obviously plays the entire set on his neck pickup and produced a fat sound unlike that on any other King recording. This is very similar to the sound he gets on the 2004 DVD release "Albert King: Live in Sweden". The title track "Blues at Sunrise" is a reworking of one of his very first King Records recordings. He has done this tune many times but this version is really different sounding. It also shows King at the beginning of the 1970s until the 1990s when he got the reputation of being difficult to work with. He typically berates the sound man in the middle of the tune.

I saw him in Australia in 1990 and he stopped the concert in the middle of "Kansas City", only his second tune, and rearranged the speakers on stage while the audience waited twenty minutes. He continued to play until he felt the Bass player wasn't holding up his end and PULLED OUT HIS LEAD IN MID-SONG! Oh Albert!

The tunes are on this recording are great, as they always are at Montreux. The production is well done and edited. Highlights of the performance are the Ray Charles (RIP) tune "I Believe To My Soul". His solos in this tune are awesome, what phrasing! "Roadhouse Blues" is a great extended tune that really gives the feel of an Albert King concert. This tune was released as a self-titled cassette tape in the 1990s, now very rare. "Little Brother, Make A Way" is the most unique cut on this CD. It features the only other and only ever live version of this track from "I'll Play the Blues For You" which was his current LP available when this concert was recorded. It has Albert singing soulfully without the second voice track of the LP and doing a great guitar solo as well.

I would highly recommend this CD. It is different sounding than any other Albert King recording. This shows Albert at the height of his creative devlopment and influence on the Blues genre. Buy this one along with Live Wire, Blues Power", "Blues At Sunset", "Blues From The Road", "Live 69" and "Talking Blues". These CDs are all different and show Albert's style and tone at various stages of his long career.

4 out of 5 stars (Another) good live album.......2004-04-03

This solid live album finds King in fine form, fronting a good band, and playing a number of his best songs.
His vocals are strong and soulful, and his muscular single string leads and fills are all over..."Don't Burn Down The Bridge", "I'll Play The Blues For You", and Ray Charles' "I Believe To My Soul" are particularly good, but the entire album is worth a listen.
It's not an absolutely necessary addition to anyone's Albert King-collection, but it's an enjoyable purchase for fans of the late guitarist.

I recently heard an excerpt from this CD on the radio. I immediately purchased the CD and found it to be a collection of music that is superbly played on an instrument that I haven't heard in years. It is a welcome addition to my CD collection. I have listened to it several times and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Don Angle Rocks With His Spirited Harpsichord!.......2004-09-26

If you have been deprived of the genius of Don Angle until now, you are in for a treat! His latest CD, "Yes Indeed!" offers the most scrumptious sampling of instrumental music ever recorded. Don has selected very classy tunes from Quincy Jones, the Bee Gees, Stephen Foster, Nino Rota and John Phillip Sousa to bring alive his shockingly spirited harpsichord, yes I said harpsichord! His brilliant arrangements begin with the joyful Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah and include beloved traditional songs, Don's signature Boogie, and three more luscious Don Angle creations, including his title song "Yes Indeed!" If you have long been a Don Angle fan, as I have, then you already know the thrill of his unique arrangements as he makes his harpsichord "rock!" New to Don Angle's world, or devoted fan, you will want to have this CD sound in your life. Yes Indeed!
