With a title track inspired by the death of friend Elliot Smith, The Believer finds singer/songwriter Rhett Miller striking a balance between regret and optimism (he became a first-time father since the last album). On his third solo effort, after 1989's hard-to-find Mythologies and 2002's nifty power-pop nugget The Instigator, Miller changed labels and joined forces with rock producer George Drakoulias (Tom Petty, the Black Crowes). Consequently, there are a few rave-ups here, like the not-so-delicate "Delicate" and the T-Rex-inspired "Ain't That Strange," but for the most part, The Believer is a lush, orchestrated affair--more mid-1980s Elvis Costello than mid-1970s Rolling Stones. Players include the multi-talented Jon Brion (Fiona Apple, Punch-Drunk Love), who manned the boards for The Instigator, along with Gary Louris (from the Drakoulias-produced Jayhawks), and Rachael Yamagata. On the wistful "Fireflies," the sultry songstress and Miller trade verses like a modern day Gram Parsons and Emmy Lou Harris. Most of the material on The Believer is new, with the exception of the Old 97's compositions "Singular Girl" (a B-side) and the aching "Question"--presented here in a tender acoustic version--and "I Believe She's Lying." Ironically enough, on this Brion and Aimee Mann-penned number, Miller sounds a little like the Believer himself: The late, great Smith. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

Verve Forecast is proud to announce the release of Rhett Miller's second solo album, The Believer. A follow-up to the highly acclaimed The Instigator, the new record is brimming with, as Blender said, "knock 'em dead songs." Already widely-loved for his work as frontman and main songwriter of the hard-charging rock 'n' roll quartet the Old 97's (of which he is still a member), The Believer takes its predecessor's achievements several steps further, with a dozen deeply felt, craftily melodic tunes that demonstrate the Texas-bred artist's knack for using accessible songcraft to address complex emotional issues.

"The songs on The Believer are about sex, war, love and death...but mostly sex." Miller says. "Before going into the studio, I thought I'd be making a punk rock Ziggy Stardust, but I wound up with George Gershwin does T. Rex's The Slider."

The Believer was produced by George Drakoulias (Black Crowes, The Jayhawks, Tom Petty), and features an all-star cast of musicians including guitarist Lyle Workman (Sheryl Crow, Beck), drummer Matt Chamberlain (Pearl Jam, Tori Amos, David Bowie), multi-intsrumentalist Jon Brion (Kanye West, Fiona Apple), keyboardist Patrick Warren (Aimee Mann) and Gary Louris of The Jayhawks on background vocals. Rachel Yamagata lends a hand as well.

3 out of 5 stars Uh Rhett, this line about Teeth of the Hydra has to go..........2007-02-28

The fact that Miller's solo renditioning of his band The Old 97's song "Singular Girl" leaves out the line "you've got the teeth of the Hydra upon you" is endemic of the rest of the album. I can just see some music exec telling Rhett that line is too weird and not commercial enough. So out it goes, and the song now sounds like a tepid and unconvincing version of the original. Compared to the amazing but apparently not successful enough "Instigator" solo album, "The Believer" sounds overly produced and much less distinctive. The numerous photos of Rhett giving the listener soulful glances indicate that they were trying to position him as the next teenage heartthrob. Sure he's cute, but why not let his singing and songwriting speak for themselves? And what's the deal with the unnecessary string arrangements on almost every song? There are some good songs on this CD but overall it's far inferior to The Instigator and Rhett's work with the Old 97s. I liked you better as an Instigator, Rhett - but I'm not a Believer in this latest incarnation.

5 out of 5 stars I wish it was longer..........2007-02-27

Not being an Old 97's fan, I really had no frame of reference for this one. Heard a cut on my local NPR station (90.5 The Night for anyone in Central NJ looking for something other than the standard fare.) and was intrigued. Sophisticated melodies, quality lyrics, ("Talking to you girl, is like long division."), and a singer who was not afraid of clear, concise phrasing? I had to check this out. I was not disappointed. This is a fine example of intelligent and well-crafted music. Bouncing around from traditional pop to alt country, each song works, and is a pleasure to listen to. It's been a long time since I wished a CD would be longer; this one just flew by and I find I just don't get tired of it. That's the best praise I can come up with.

5 out of 5 stars Long Division.......2007-01-06

"The Believer" opens with "My Valentine," a driving mid-tempo track with Miller's nasal swagger, "Sex in wartime is sweeter than peace." "Help Me, Suzanne" is a sunny melodic pop track, "I had lost my way like I always do. You gave me the reason; I'd like to thank you." "Love gets you in the gut, takes the top off of your head and makes you wish that you were dead," Rhett sings on the edgy "Meteor Shower" whose mild melody countercuts the lyrical anxiety. "Brand New Way" is another lyrical gem as Miller lulls us with melody and Patrick Warren's jangling piano, "Let's just say there are those long days, there is this dumb luck, there is a brand new way opening up." "Ain't That Strange" rocks out with swagger. My favorite track is the Aimee Mann/Jon Brion penned "I Believe She's Lying" with its sunny melody and Miller's breezy vocals over a lyrical minefield. "Singular Girl" is a bop-pop confection, "Talking to you, girl, is like long division." Guitars chime in a Byrds-like pop tune, "This is a girl on a different planet on a constellation far away." "The Believer" is an excellent set with strong songs, an able follow-up to "The Instigator." Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars... Rhett Miller takes another detour from the Old 97's.......2006-12-10

Rhett Miller is best known of course as the singer-guitarist of the Old 97's, a country/americana band. A few years ago Miller made his first album away from the band, 2002's "The Instigator". After returning back to the Old 97's fold for a couple of years, Miller has made another solo detour.

"The Believer" (12 tracks, 43 min.) finds Miller trying to balance country-flavored tracks with more rock-oriented tracks. The result is a rather two-faced album, which does not flow easily, but does have great particular songs. Among the better ones are the opener "My Valentine", "Ain't That Strange", a Ziggy Stardust-era David Bowie-like rocker, "Fireflies", a country duet with Rachael Yamagata, "Delicate", an all-out rocker, and the pensive title track.

Overall "The Believer" is certainly pleasant enough and not a bad album (it's easily better than 90 percent of the stuff that plays on commercial mainstream radio these days--sadly enough this album will never see much airply, if any at all). That said, there are too many uneven moments on the album to make it a truly outstanding one.

5 out of 5 stars I'm a Believer.......2006-11-07

I got turned onto Rhett Miller from Paste magazine. Included a disc featuring a song from this album. I bought "Instigator" first and it took a few listens, but it grew on me with many great songs on it. Bought "Believer" and feel it's equally as great if not better with some more upbeat music jangles. Still shares the same haunting lyrics about love, life and the feelings once expressed and so on. Really great CD and unlike Instigator, I found myself listening to Believer and singing out loud.

Despite personnel changes in the band, this sounds very much like Oteil's Love of a Lifetime and Family Secret and somewhat like his work with aquarium Rescue Unit. If you're a fan of the Allman Brothers, this is a much jazzier, quieter, and more spiritual sound than Allman Brothers work Oteil has been on.

The band Shakti, together from 1975 to 1977, was an extension of John McLaughlin's longstanding interest in Indian music, integrating his guitar with Indian instruments and exploring the myriad tonal and rhythmic complexities of the subcontinent. After re-forming in 1997 as Remember Shakti, the group went through some personnel shifts before reaching the form heard here on a 1999 European tour. Along with McLaughlin's original partner Zakir Hussain on tabla drums, the quartet includes V. Selvaganesh on percussion and U. Shrinivas on mandolin. The combination is heady, pairing two string players and two hand drummers in improvised dialogues that are often carried on at superhuman speed. Even the Indian elements are a synthesis. Hussain's tablas are the drums of choice in Northern Indian music, while Selvaganesh plays instruments of the South--a clay pot called a ghatam, the two-headed mridangam that functions like tablas, and kanjira, a small tambourine that has somehow become a virtuoso instrument. Shrinivas's electric mandolin is a Southern adaptation that in practice resembles a soprano slide guitar or a high-pitched vina. McLaughlin adds Western harmonic elements into the mix, blending chords with pitch-shifting Indian scales to create some very distinctive music.

There's tremendous diversity in the 77-minute CD, from the serene reflections of McLaughlin's "Lotus Feet" to playful exchanges to flights of transcendent and transcontinental virtuosity, like Shrinivas's solo on his own "Maya." There's a natural affinity between the improvisational languages of Indian music and jazz, and the flexibility here is such that McLaughlin can even suggest some roadhouse roots on Hussain's "Ma No Pa." --Stuart Broomer

Wow - This is definitely worth a buy. The greatest revelation to me was U Srinivas - all others in this ensemble are very established players at least in their early or late 50's and here is this guy in his mid-thirties playing like he has been around forever. What an amazing talent! "Maya" is an amazing piece where Srinivas just lets it rip ... Srinivas, Selvaganesh and Zakir set the piece ablaze around 4:30 and 7:47.

The version of "Lotus Feet" is also very amazing since John takes a lead with his guitar. The version with Pt. Chaurasia is very soothing to say the least, but this rendition has a different feel to it for sure.

    Definitely worth a buy.

5 out of 5 stars Stirs up your soul!.......2006-02-11

Shakti's immortal music strikes a chord the first time you listen to them. This album is no different and puts one more stamp on the quality of music they produce. Highly recommended for people interested in fusion music.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best live music ever recorded........2005-04-21

"The Believer", a live album culled from shows from Remember Shakti's 1999 tour, is a stunning document of brilliant music. The second incarnation of Remember Shakti, with guitarist John McLaughlin and tabla master Zakir Hussain joined by electric mandolin player U. Shrinivas and percussionist V. Selvaganesh (son of original Shakti member T.H. Vinyakram), has a far different feel to its predecessor. With the second string player, there's a greater interaction between the two-- Shrinivas is an amazing player, matching wits and riffs with McLaughlin and more than holding his own, an impressive feat in the face of such a powerful guitarist. Between and around the two of them is a bed of percussive sounds that drives, holds, and smooths the music as necessary-- the four musicians, who performed sitting on the stage, have formed an intense bond by this point, one needs to look no further than the opening number where the four instruments intertwine sympathetically around each other, with one string dropping out whilst the other solos over support from the percussionists. Again, to Srinivas' credit, were it not for the pitch of his instrument and few subtleties in style, you'd not be able to distinguish his playing from McLaughlin's somewhat more matured style-- but listen to him boil about ten minutes into "5 in the Morning, 6 in the Afternoon", totally breathtaking.

For more explosiveness and powerful playing, check out Srinivas' "Maya", with blazing fast harmonies from the two string players as they're pushed by the drummers and McLaughlin's burning "Anna", which, while much more patient, features no less incredible playing.

While the pyrotechnics abound throughout the album, the band has not forgotten subtlety and voicing, the record settles a bit in the middle with the wavering "Ma No Pa" (with McLaughlin comping to great effect under Shrinivas' subtle and swirling solo and then eventually pushing forth his own solo, this one bubbles over slowly over its 18 minutes, an exercise in tension) and a reprise of "Lotus Feet" (a feature for McLaughlin's exercise of taste, subtlety, mood and power, with the theme delicately stated on mandolin, freeing McLaughlin further to explore the hautning moods he's developed), or consider the set closer-- "Finding the Way", a percussion feature where the backdrop becomes the foreground.

All in all, "The Believer" is a fantastic record, although I will say this-- the album lacks something the live shows have, and I've enjoyed it less since witnessing this performed. Nonetheless, its a fantastic document of a killer band.

5 out of 5 stars Believe your ears, 'cause these guys are amazing musicians!.......2004-11-14

This is the first CD release to match and perhaps even surpass the high energy music of the original Shakti album. The two studio albums with the original lineup were interesting but lacked the same intensity as the first album in part because they were both studio efforts.

It was nice that McLaughlin decided to resurrect Shakti and U. Srinivas on mandolin is perfect for the group because he can match McLaughlin's lightning fast riffs.

The real standout on this album is not virtuoso tabla player Zakir Hussain, but rather Selvaganesan on the kanjira, the South Indian frame drum. Selvaganesan is the son of Vikku Vinyakram who was part of the original Shakti lineup.

His kanjira solo is amazing for several reasons. The kanjira is played with one hand striking and the other hand modulating the sound through tensioning and releasing the drum head. Not only is the range of sounds that he gets from modulating the sound astonishing, but the fact that he is able to reproduce with one hand what Zakir has played with two hands is mind boggling.

Whether you are a fan of McLaughlin, Zakir, world-music, Indian music or just want to hear several virtuoso musicans from around the world come to together to create high energy acoustic fusion, this is a MUST HAVE CD for anyone with a pair of ears.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing energy.......2004-10-13

Listening to this album is always amazing. The energy and incredible mix of guitar and traditional indian instruments works perfectly. I got a chance to see Remember Shakti perform live on their 2004 tour and it only reaffirmed my belief that McLaughlin and co. are among some of the most amazing musicians around.

5 out of 5 stars Thrash at its Best.......2006-04-07

This album is one of the best thrash metal albums I have ever heard amongst both Christian and secular artists. It is a five star album in this genre, not of albums in general. The crunching guitars and quick timing changes are on a standard that few other bands ever acheive, let alone on a rookie release. They're talent only gets better in their next two releases, but they also lose some of the raw crunch of Extraction from Mortality. They sound like they have beem heavily influenced by German thrash bands like Destruction and Sodom.

4 out of 5 stars An awesome Debut, but its not as good as Dimensions .......2006-03-01

NOTE: NOT TO BASH ONE OF THE REVIEWERS, BUT THIS IS NOT DEATH METAL. IT'S THRASH.
I basically just said it all. Extraction From Mortality is an awesome Thrash Metal album by the Christian band Believer. It's not their best. It seems to me that their albums just get better as they release them. Extraction From Mortality is more of an album you listen to just merely for entertainment as opposed to art. This is album is some-what technical as compared to their later stuff which is EXTREMELY technical with their complex riffs and odd time signatures. However, this album has my number 1 favorite song of Believer and could possibly be in my top 10 all time favorite songs. The song is called Shadow Of Death, which is also the very first song of believer that I have heard.

What is awesome about this album however is the production and the great crunch used in the guitars. Unfortunately, Kurt Bachman's vocals are a little annoying because they sometimes drag and they are not so aggressive. Still I love this album, but it's NOT my favorite Believer album. My favorite is still Dimensions.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-02-23

Believer is a Christian thrash metal band (not death metal as the previous reviewer below wrote). This was their first album, I believe (and best). No one sounds like them and no one ever will. Great thrash with a Christian message (even though I don't care about that) and a great roughly-melodic sound. I love the title track, Unity, Shadow of Death (the best). All songs are great though.

Check out Sanity Obscure, their second album, which was more creative and diverse, but perhaps less melodic overall, and not as technical (if thrash can be considered technical.

    Great buy.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive death metal album!.......2003-02-28

Extraction... is simply as good as death metal gets. The pace is full on, the vocals soaring, the drums hypnotic, and the guitar riffs take the skin off your face! There is attention to detail too, notably the introductions to songs like the string quartet before the title track hits you, and the organ intro to the opening song. ... One word of warning, don't buy any other Believer albums expecting the same standard coz after this stunning album they disappeared up their own .........

i'm really not sure what to say.Believer actually speaks for themselves. a true band of their own kind. the downside of the whole deal is the sound or production or sumthin.it might take a little while(as for me) to get used to,seriously, let it play out a few times(crank it in your car or headphones)you'll get the jist of it.the dudes voice kinda lingers in the brain so you can either like it or (as for me) let it become part of the music. simple as that, like it or not.

        5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-01-30

I first heard of Irma Thomas by looking through various recomendations for her style of music on the Amazon web site. It seemed like no one had anything but positive things to say about her so I picked up 'True Believer'. Now I'm making everyone I know listen to this CD. It, to me, is perfect in so many ways. Every song is enjoyable. Irma Thomas nails each one with a delivery that's never exaggerated, always pitch perfect, with an obvious respect and understanding of each song's lyrics and mood.

This CD has become an instant favorite. I love 'Smoke Filled Room' and 'Heart Full of Rain'.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Lady and Voice.......2000-09-16

I first heard of Irma Thomas in a Jimmy Buffett song. He talked about Sweet Irma Thomas. I hadn't heard of her. Then I saw her on Austin City Limits. As soon as the show was over, I ran to buy a CD of hers. This was the first one I bought. It blew me away. Now I own a number of her CDs. I have given this one to my sister and a client. They both loved it as well. If you love R&B, Blues, or New Orleans music. You MUST have this in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites.......2007-02-20

Having read some of the other reviews here I am not sure about all of the controversy around JC's albums - the only thing that I personally can add is to let all of you now that this CD is one of my all time favorite blues albums - and close behind One Believer is JC's other album Howling Mercy - both of these albums are dark and very intense - my favorite tracks on this album are 'Devil in my closet' and 'Voodoo Edge'. If you like blues you will like this album - I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars part 2 of the trilogy.......2005-11-04

Not much can be said. This cd has to be listened to, not discussed.
In my opinion, it is JC's best collection of songs. It is definitely one of the favourite cds I own (along with Bitches Brew and Foreign Affair) and I LOVE it.

This is the most depressing blues album i've ever heard.I'm sorry i bought it.

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Album.......2002-05-04

I know his voice has been slammed, the production has been slammed, and just about every other nitpicky thing you can think of has been said about this album..... I don't care. This is one of my all time favorite albums....EVER!!
His voice is not for everyone, but if you like the hoodoo, voodoo, low rumbling , primal growl of a man made of mud, this album is for you.
The guy used to play a '58 Gibson Jumbo with a single coil pickup in the soundhole, it sounded awesome.
He played with heart and conviction. There's not a bum cut on any of his three releases, but since this was the first I bought, it's my favorite.

I saw him open for Buddy Guy when this album was released. I had never heard of him before, but the next day I went to every record store in two towns trying to find this album. No one had it in stock because everyone else who was at the show had beaten me to the store and bought the last copies. So, critics be darned, just buy the album already.......
