Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of Anthony Newley you will find this superb C.D. a welcome addition to your collection. It is easy to understand why this musical is considered Newley's finest. In addition to playing the lead role, he wrote, directed and composed many memorable pieces of music including "What Kind of Fool Am I", "Once I In a Lifetime", "Gonna Build a Mountain", and many, many more. His genious is well defined in this piece, it's a joy.

STOP THE WORLD - I WANT TO GET OFF is one of the most fascinating musical theatre scores of the 1960s, the `new-style musical' was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and was largely tailored to Newley's vocal style.

Rarely has the score been bettered than on the original Broadway cast album, crisply reissued here on the Decca Broadway label. Anthony Newley and his pert leading lady, underrated British performer Anna Quayle, perform the score with flash and verve. The entire score is fantastic though the penultimate number "Someone Nice Like You" must count as one of the most beautiful love songs ever written for the musical stage.

Anna Quayle is a marvellous performer, sadly only really remembered for her role as the Baroness in the movie of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (a role that is great but does not represent all she was capable of), and Anthony Newley, who also headed the London company to perhaps ever greater acclaim, is in his element.

This Bricusse-Newley musical is still fresh today. Some of the songs are classic. They include "What Kind of Fool am I" and "Once in a Lifetime". Newley's voice and vocal range was at its height when this album was recorded. If you like the music in this show then you will also like the music from "Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd".

Anthony Newley's Finest Hours!.......2002-09-25

To say that 'Stop the World' was a revolutionary musical in the days of sugar and spice, nicey-nicey musicals would be an understatement. To suggest that Anthony Newley was one of the finest singer-songwriter-performers of our time would be like saying the Pope is Catholic. To say that Decca has done us all a favour by finally reissuing this tuneful cast recording on CD would however be ACCURATE!
Anthony Newley died in April 1999 after losing his battle with cancer. The battle of fame he never lost and left behind a wonderful collection of musicals, songs, tv and cabaret performances that we can love again and again. But the finest of all of Newley's output was this musical. Co-wrote with Leslie Bricusse, Anthony Newley made the role of Littlechap totally his own. Not even Sammy Davis Jnr, Joel Gray or Tony Tanner in the film version could match that unique quality of style and originality that Newley exudes in this fantastic tour de force role.
For fans of musicals unfamiliar with Newley's work, you will not be sorry when you buy this CD. For Newley fans - why haven't you already bought your copy!!

american fool is a classic album. it has three top 20 hits. jack and diane hit#1,hurts so good hit#2, and hand to hold on to hit#19. the songs weakest moments,danger list,close enough,and can you take it are good too. why did his record company say this album would ruin his career? it dudn't,john mellencamp became more successful after this album came out.it spent 9 weeks at #1. this is an amazing album. ed wilson

Not Perfect but Pretty Damn Good.......2007-02-08

Being Brought Up...An American Fool!.......2006-08-22

Midwestern Rock from the heartland! This record holds up so well not only in its simplicity but overall timelessness. The remastering is excellent and the lyrics are included in the booklet. I love Weakest Moments and the bonus track is the title track American Fool which is an awesome song to end the CD! I loved how the record originally ended with Weakest Moments and was unsure if I would want to hear something else after such a great ballad but the extra track is fanatastic.

ALTHOUGH "HURTS SO GOOD" IS AN UNDENIABLE CLASSIC..........2006-05-29

... "Thundering Hearts" has always been the undisputable killer track on this recording... by contrast, how "Jack & Diane" became such a huge hit when it sounded like a half-baked b-side would make for an interesting episode on "Unsolved Mysteries"... and as for "Weakest Moments", it was a throwaway that should have never been included on this album to begin with. Overall, a solid album distinguished by Mike Wanchic's guitar work which would figure prominently as part of Mellencamp's trademark sound.

John Mellencamp's Breakthrough Album Just Got Better.......2005-08-13

AMERICAN FOOL, John Mellencamp's first big hit album, has just gotten better, thanks to digital remastering and the addition of the title song as a bonus cut. The songs are basic party fare, for the most part, but also include some more serious material as well. Any Mellencamp fan should buy this one.

Television Meets Psych Rock Meets Spaghetti Western.......2007-06-19

Each of the Paisley Underground bands seemed to have their own little slant on the sounds of the movement, which was about bringing guitar-driven, psychedelic music back to the fore in the synth-heavy 80s. True West's bent was a little hard to figure. There were the duelling guitar wizards, Tolman and McGrath, who sounded more like Verlaine and Lloyd than any 1960s guitarists. There was the feeling of the old West, not just in the band's name but in their sound and feel - something that put you in mind of tan chinos, shoe boots with spurs, shots of rye at the local saloon, and lots of dirt. Then there was the psychedelic thing - the cover of Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam," the sometimes trippy lyrics, the spiralling guitar lines . . . In the liner notes to this compilation of True West's best material, it is suggested that they hit their peak on the full-length album, Drifters. But that album, despite its excellent opening track, "Look Around," pales in comparison to the EP, Hollywood Holiday. The eight songs on the EP represented all of the best elements of True West - the songs seem fresh, they keep you guessing what might come next, each one has its own little angle on the whole picture the band was presenting then. The album, meanwhile, gets tired after the third or fourth track, and feels like a labor from there. And the three tracks produced by Tom Verlaine thrown on at the end are notweworthy for historical reference, but otherwise pretty unremarkable. If you were into the Paisley Underground thing when it was happening, or if you just like guitar-heavy psychedelic rock, you will absolutely want to pick up this CD. Just be prepared to hear a combination of inspired gems and sludge.

Making The World Safe For Guitars.......2007-06-15

Back in the early-mid '80s, there was talk that the electric guitar was going to go the way of the dinosaur and the dodo bird to replaced by keyboards, computers and things. Bands like True West took a stand and helped save the six-string from the onslaught of the MIDI monster. The dueling guitar duo of Richard McGrath and Russ Tolman was on par with Television's Verlaine and Lloyd, in fact Tom Verlaine was so impressed with True West that he produced three tracks, which are luckily included as bonus tracks on this two-for reissue of the band's first two albums: Hollywood Holiday and Drifters. Drawing inspiration from Syd Barrett era Floyd, 40s film noir, the Beck and Page era Yardbirds, late night 80s cable TV, the San Francisco Sound, and the Mercury space program, True West created a couple classic albums that sound fresh and vital today.

I own both the original EP and LP on vinyl, the EP is more feedback laden, the LP was, I don't know, more laid back, but w/good dual guitar songs. Both EP and LP appear to be on this CD, so enjoy!

Selections from the Greatest Voice of the Last Hundred Years.......2007-03-13

Mario Lanza was, arguably, the greatest tenor and greatest singer of this and the last century. It is difficult to appreciate him without listening to a variety of selections. This collection has some of his best recordings and exhibits the versatility and variety that he possessed that permitted him to "crossover" from opera to popular music with a ease.

I recommend this for those who already know Lanza to some extent but want to go into more depth and understand his marvelous skills.

A Must Have .......2006-12-12

I had forgotten what a beautiful voice Mario Lanza had. This collection contains opera and pop selections that exhibit the power yet sweetness of his voice. Fortunately, we have his CD's and videos so we can remember and listen to his gorgeous, vibrant voice and personality. I highly recommend this collection along with his wonderful movies, especially The Great Caruso.

WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2005-10-19

The Mario Lanza Collection is a three CD set and it has 61 songs and they all sound great. The mastering on this set is excellent and the song choice is very very good. It would have been perfect if they added a forth CD with more Arias, Italian songs and Sacred Arias. BUT still this set is a great introduction to Lanza. Lanza's voice was powerful and beautiful; if you are a fan of great singing, you will love Lanza. Highlights on this CD set are; Be my Love, Because your Mine, Serenade, With a Song in My Heart, Temptation, The Lord's Prayer, Ciribirbin, O Solo Mio, Ariverducci Roma, and on and on. They are many many great songs on this set, and I highly recommend it.

This is the record that transformed John Cougar (né John Mellencamp and soon to be John Cougar Mellencamp) into a superstar. BUY THE NEWER VERSION.......2005-09-11

This CD was "Johnny Cougar's" first step in breaking away from his media created image.
I absolutely HATED "Hurts so Good", and his other assorted nonsensical pop tunes.Fortunately, I have a friend {Thanks Cheryl} She had grown up in the same small town in Indiana as him and had listened to him on the local scene. She KNEW, and made it a point to tell EVERYONE, that "John Cougar" didn't exist. Then she made me listen to Danger List. That one song sold me on his talent. Weird thing was, American Fool was not allowed to be listed on the very album named for it, but it's there, at the end, if you knew to listen for it. Many people didn't.
It's easier to buy the new version where he was allowed to put it where ever he damn well wanted!

The death of John Cougar.......2005-07-11

During his career, Mellencamp has gone from being viewed as a Springsteen rip-off to a big pop star to a serious music artist. 1982's "American Fool" serves as an important transition from the first to the second stages of his career. Prior to "American Fool," John Mellencamp (then John Cougar) was a mid-level rocker with a few minor chart hits - the biggest being "Ain't Even Done with the Night" (#17 in 1981).

The first single, "Hurts So Good," provided that big breakthrough, peaking at #2 for 4 weeks and going gold. The song and video were ubiquitous during the summer of 1982 and helped make "American Fool" a #1 hit for 9 weeks. Although the song is a bit of pop-rock tripe, it still sounds pretty good today. The second single inspired me to buy "American Fool" back in 1982 when I was 12 years old - the #1 hit "Jack and Diane." The song was different from his prior hits - less raucous and more introspective, a sign of his maturing writing skills. The song eventually spent 4 weeks at #1 and went gold; it's even been sampled several times, notably for Jessica Simpson's 2000 hit "I Think I'm In Love With You." Finally, "Hand to Hold On to" was released and became a mid-chart hit, peaking at #19 in early 1983. The song is very catchy and should have done better.

Along with these hits, "American Fool" is filled with other memorable songs. "Thundering Hearts" is probably my favorite because of its roaring chorus. "Danger List" is another winner; it's perhaps the smoothest sounding song on the CD and has some great lyrics - I ain't looking for affection/ I guess I need myself a shove/ Give me someone I can look up to/ Show me someone I can love. In addition, "Weakest Moments" is a strong rock ballad, although it does have a strange-sounding reed instrument playing at one point. However, there's not a weak track on this CD.

"American Fool" is not the best John Mellencamp CD, as he was still a bit immature as a writer. He was also much under the thumb of his record label, who wanted a traditional rocker; hence the name John Cougar. What he's obviously excelled at during his career is Midwestern-style rock, such as "Pink Houses" and "Small Town." Nevertheless, I have always loved "American Fool" - it's his biggest hit (tied with 5 million in sales with "Scarecrow) and the album that provided him with the success that's allowed him to stick around 20+ years later. Plus, "Jack and Diane" is just such a classic 1980s song. Highly Recommended.

Hard And Cool.......2005-03-26

The year 1982 made an "American Fool" John Cougar(when this album was released he named himself that way) really a cool guy. Spurred by superhits JACK AND DIANE, HURTS SO GOOD both having impressive heavier straight-ahead rock arrangement, this album became a #1 album hit serving as another narrator for non-mainstream rejected Americans just as the music of Bruce Springsteen did. This album has nicely written great songs so overshadowed by the aforementioned hits but with repeated listens you will get to love it. THUNDERING HEARTS is the closer in style for Jack and Diane hit but the rest are raid back message-driven songs. DANGER LIST is in particular self-portrayal song remniscing days back his unknown rocker days.
WEAKEST MOMENTS is slow blues having nostalgic interlude.

Recommended for wide range of American rock fans who love Bruce Springsteen, Rick Springfield, Hooters, Bob Seger, and Huey Lewis and the News.

American Fool's American Fan.......2004-12-04

In 1982 I was twelve years old. I remember two albums I got for my birthday that year. "Packman Fever" and "American Fool".
Of course as we all know the Pack Man fad wore off but Cougar never did.
I'm thirty-four now, and those songs take me back every time I hear them on the radio. and it's pretty cool you still hear them. It's truly a classic, and I encourage anyone to buy this CD, it's good for the soul!

Mellencamp's greatest........2004-07-24

It frustrates me to hear "Hurts So Good" on a soft rock radio station. John Mellencamp's style has changed over the years, and in my opinion, not for the better. He's become a folk/rock musician where accordions and harmonicas are the norm instead of plain old guitar, bass, and drums. Don't get me wrong, Mellencamp still puts out some true gems, but his cd's just aren't as strong or raw as they were when "Cougar" was still in the mix. "American Fool" is John "Cougar" Mellencamp at his best.

One of the best composers of the 20th century, this rendition of W.G.S's music is moving and well recorded.

Worth it for the "Lyric Quartet" alone.......2006-05-31

The first half of this album contains some of the most beautiful, breathtaking music for strings ever written, played and recorded. Very sentimental and heartfelt, quite accessible for those unfamiliar with Grant's works. I give this cd 4 stars for this 3 movement piece alone.
The same liveliness is also evident in the three works which follow, Danzaz De Panama", "Prince and the Mermaid Suite" and "Summerland".
But toward the end one will have realized that they've already heard the best that this album has to offer, as it tends to grow stale and even wearisome and transform into audio wallpaper.
The first half - fantastic.****
The second half - yawn.
But "Lyric Suite" is a tough act to follow.

Really terrific.......2003-12-14

Clearly I'm in the minority here, but I really like this recording. Mike Holoway and Louise Gold don't equal the brilliant and authoritative performances of Newley and Quayle, but they do very, very well.

I'm puzzled by the hostility that the performances of Holoway and Gold have provoked from most of the other reviewers. And I would think that some of the Newley lovers would be pleased that that the people at JAY think highly enough of this score to have produced a complete recording of it, even if they didn't love the result. Instead, they seem affronted by the idea that anyone would dare produce a recording with someone other than Newley as Littlechap.

Holoway has a more pleasing voice than Newley, and his acting of the songs satisfied me completely. Obviously, Newley had an authority in these songs that no one else will ever have. But Holoway is excellent.

And I think that Gold is often as funny as Quayle. There are definitely places where Quayle is absolutely matchless, brilliant and beyond comparison. But Gold is very good.

This recording is well-conducted, the orchestra plays terrifically, the orchestrations sound fabulous, and the supporting cast is fine. And it contains the entire score.

I've heard almost all of the releases in the JAY Masterworks series, and I think this is one of the best. Some of the other reviewers seemed to have been upset that neither of the recordings featuring Newley and Quayle were available while this one was. Well, it seems strange to blame this recording for that. The people at JAY weren't keeping the other ones from being released.

In any case, the Broadway recording with Newley and Quayle is again available. I'm glad to have both.

Lacks magic.......2000-02-12

Newley was the magic. At the Broadway performance we saw in '63 and in the Album with Anna Quayle there was fresh energy and not a false moment. It's not entirely fair to compare but in comparison, this is stale and leaden...like the movie made of Stop The World (without Newley).

What else we might have written was already said exactly as we would have said it by Jeff Dunn in his review.

We gave three stars because it is still Newley and Bricusse and so it is still marvelous invention and worth a '...quick butcher's hook....'

Sorry to say that this release does not measure up to the 10/12/1988 Polydor 820 261 distributed by UNI and now out of print. I must heartily agree with Mr. Dunn (above). Bring back the Original Broadway cast!

BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST ALBUM.......2000-01-13

To start off with, I am an avid Anthony Newly fan and was really sadden by his death. I did get to see the original Broadway show. Unfortunatly, this new version does not match the original. Newlys way of putting over a song is missed. The songs seem to be sung much slower so the performers can sing the songs. It was Newlys show and when you listen to the original cast album, you can tell the difference. Lets hope they will reissue the origianl cast album again. It is an important Broadway musical and should be back on cd for the people who did not get a chance to get it when it was available. I'm glad I was one of the lucky ones. Did we really need another recording of Stop The World? I don't think so.
