Sloan is God's gift to rock and roll. There. It's been said--for the one-millionth time. While fans uttered the phrases "critics' darlings," "underappreciated," and "underrated," the band spent their time circling the globe and racking up a string of singles. They've been rightfully compared to the who's who of four-piece rock/pop bands (no need to go into that here).* But it is, on the occasion of this 2005-released A-side retrospective, worth pointing out a few of the reasons for such comparisons. First and foremost is their catalog of recordings. Each album is dosed with tracks that run from horn-throwing monsters to easy-breezy rock-alongs. Each successive release one-upped the previous, either in terms of ability, maturity, or daring--never once alienating fans or looking back for past glory. All four voices fly in and out throughout; drum fills are pulled straight from the cocktail kit masters; tube-amp tones and guitar phrases could be the chapters in a How to be in a Killer Band for Dummies book. On stage, the band is the equivalent of a Yukon fire drill with members swapping instruments, vocals, and rock moves song-for-song with furious skill and fierce cool. They're everything we've been trained to love about rock all rolled up in a tour van.

Highlights from this collection range from the ambitious undergrad stabs of "Underwhelmed" and the holy trinity of power-pop from 1997's One Chord to Another ("The Good in Everyone," "Everything You've Done Wrong," "The Lines You Amend"), to the grown-up Sloan of "The Other Man" ("If I'm the other man, nature will abhor me") and "The Rest of My Life" ("Am I gonna be someone who has to take the rest of my life to settle down?/What kind of fool doesn't think about it?/You have to be a fool not to think about it.") The one thing you'll find yourself wishing for is a speedy arrival of the B-sides and rarities.

The bonus DVD version contains videos for all the songs and is the good value here. The videos accurately document the Sloan legacy and the song-by-song video commentary is fun for the superfans. --Peter Hilgendorf

5 out of 5 stars A "best of" from one of the great pop bands in the history of rock.......2007-02-09

For the life of me I don't know where I learned about Sloan. But I confess it was only recently and I must further admit some shame at never before having heard of such a magnificent band. I started doing some research and discovered that when they were first breaking out in a big way in Canada, their record company decided that the kind of power pop they played would not go over well in the United States, where post-Nirvana grunge was dominating the rock scene. This was certainly my loss, since some of my all time favorite bands--the Beatles, Big Star, the Shoes, and the Smithereens--were all power pop bands. I started asking some of my more musical savvy friends about Sloan and was surprised that none of them had heard of the band either. And after poking around on some chat boards, I'm convinced that Sloan may be the greatest band around that the United States remains in complete ignorance about. Since first finding out about Sloan, I've been frantically rushing about getting as many of their albums as possible and am now convinced that except for the New Pornographers, they may be the best band out of Canada in the past couple of decades at least.

A SIDES WIN is a superb overview of Sloan's albums, but I have to add a qualifier. Some best-of anthologies can distort a band, making them sound better on a single disc than they do on individual albums. What is astonishing about Sloan is that most of their individual albums are very nearly as good as this greatest hits disc. There is no sharp drop off in quality between the songs that made the A-Sides discs and those that didn't. In fact, many of the songs that I have most enjoyed on individual albums did not make this disc.

This is power pop, a genre that has wide but not universal appeal. I absolutely love it. To me there is nothing more exciting than a band that can combine a strong of marvelous hooks, catchy lyrics, and great musicianship to craft easily accessible and joyous pop songs. Sloan absolutely excels at this form. They have a sort of genius for hook-driven songs, with precisely the right enhancements to put the song over the edge towards perfection: a guitar riff here, some horns there, some tight harmonies, a thick and lush guitar chord, an organ or hand clap. On top of all this they are a wonderfully tight, talented group. They don't quite reach the level of the New Pornographers in their playing, but then who does?

Every song on this disc is stellar and the disc moves from one stunning gem to another. "Underwhelmed" starts the disc off marvelously, but instantly gives way to the equally superb and very upbeat "500 Up." The next song is the wonderful "Coax Me," and a couple of cuts later is "The Good in Everybody." As they say, the hits just keep on coming. Other highlights include "Friendship" about the end of a friendship, "The Rest of My Life" in which the singer expresses grown up thoughts about maturing, and the unusual "The Other Man," in which the singer tells a woman with a boyfriend but with whom he is sleeping while supposedly just a friend expresses his side of things ("I'm the other man/No one's rooting for me").

The only reason not to own this album is if you already own all of Sloan's other albums. And actually, that is not even right, because this version of the album comes with a DVD extra that contains videos of all the songs on the CD. The short of the matter: if you don't own this, get it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Introduction to Sloan.......2006-08-27

I've become a fast fan of the band after downloading this compilation. Sloan may be "power pop" but the hooks are smart and addictive and the the hard-driving guitar riffs still come off clean without losing any edge. Essential tracks: All Used Up, The Rest of My Life, The Other Man, If It Feels Good Do It, and Underwhelmed.

If you like bands like Allister or Something Corporate but haven't heard of Sloan, start with this collection and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Solid representation of a great Canadian band.......2006-03-01

OK, so this is the album containing every single they have released and therein lies it's only flaw, it's a singles collection and not a best-of. I know that some may feel these songs feel better within the context of the original albums. I think these songs fit together in a compilation. It's very strong songwriting and it documents a band's growth and changing from album to album over the years and the shift of rock music in the meantime. Since this band plays a straightahead style of powerpop that's well known people may think they have no merit because they sound like others, but do they sound superior to the others, I think so. They at least hold their own here and cut their own niche. The harmonies and melodicism are something not seen much in today's popular scene, outside of Fountains of Wayne. Yes, their sounds goes from raw straight ahead rock to studio sheen at the end, but I find that both eras fit them well. As for the DVD, I find it interesting and good in the same way I find the CD to be, and the extended documentary for the videas is very illuminating and informative about the personalities of the band and their intelligence, concepts, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, a DVD...JOY!!!1.......2006-02-20

Although most Sloan fans doubtlessly have all these songs on the CD, the DVD included in the set makes it all worthwhile. Two hours of videos--every one released thus far--and documentary info on the making of the videos make this a must-have for any fan of the greatest band in the hemisphere. If you're unfamiliar with Sloan, there's no better way to get an introduction to what these guys are about. Tell you what--just stop reading the reviews and order this, already.

4 out of 5 stars I would give it 5..........2005-10-20

I really like Sloan. And I would give it a 5 star... (the DVD was pretty good too.)But when I tried to rip the music onto Windows Media Player, it would keep skipping and some stupid download thing kept coming up. That was rather annoying. Although this is a very good album, with all the hits on it.
Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Sloan for tone!.......2005-08-09

This is my first intro to Sloan. Being a huge BEatle fan, I dig sloan. They have a very power pop vibe. Good songs, great guitar tones, nice vocals, great melodies. I also like the fact that they all four sing lead.

Being a singer/songwriter myself, I really appreciate good work. My hat's off to you all. I have just ordered two more Sloan cd's!!

1 out of 5 stars Only because I can't give this band zero stars........2005-07-27

In short, the only people who tend to like Sloan are Canadian nationalists, who refuse to put as much effort into appreciating bands from other nations, especially the US. If they did, they'd realize this band has long overstayed its welcome. I really liked the song "Coax Me" back in 1994, when I was 14 years old. That was until I bought the album "Twice Removed" (1994) from which it came. All the songs on that album turned out to have terrible lyrics, including "Coax Me", and the music just wasn't very compelling or original. Sloan just sounds like a modern band trying to imitate The Beatles.

Not only are the lyrics awful and nonsensical and not only is the music dull, but each band member takes turns at singing really badly, with little range or subtlety. I was willing to forgive them in 1994, only a few years after they started and were idiotically heralded as Canada's Nirvana -- yet again proving nationalists' strong yearning to live up to the US, while disliking it so. However, based on their singles output, they have proven themselves unable to grow at all, and remain -- to this day -- in the stagnant status of a second-rate band, unable to attract attention abroad (not because of any nationalism in other countries) or even win major success among Canadians (despite the massive bias here).

Now "The Arcade Fire" is a Canadian band that has won acclaim internationally, but not the deserved attention from a domestic music industry hellbent on finding Canadian versions of superficial, money-making pop in the US -- Avril Lavigne, Nickelback, Sum 41, Simple Plan, Fefe Dobson, etc, which have all met with undeserved praise and awards. Unlike Sloan and these other performers, The Arcade Fire is truly something original and special. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars My only gripes? A few A-sides missing... and THAT video........2005-05-25

The music contained here is top-notch. Something people have not yet said in the previous reviews is that, BEYOND all the officially released videos that appear here are alternate/fan-shot/TV appearances/personal videos of each song as well (except for the new single "All Used Up", with "Glad to Be Here" being the only song with no video representation whatsoever). ATOP that, the Bonus Features section also includes the promo TV ads for both "Four Nights at the Palais Royale" and "Pretty Together". Both versions of the "If It Feels Good, Do It" video (song only / song + comments on "What is rock and roll?") are here. If you ever wondered why the "Second Hand Views" video wasn't brought to DVD, well it now has been, and at a lesser price than the original VHS, and with a bonus music CD too!

    My _only_ two gripes?

    1) Sloan released singles without videos ("G Turns to D", "Don't You Believe a Word", perhaps even "Keep On Thinkin'" if I recall correctly). Perhaps given the fact that some were only officially serviced as promo copies to radio and fans can factor in to this, and the "Don't You Believe a Word" single _was_ released in the U.K... Okay, if you already have all the albums (as I do), it's a very minor gripe, but when you consider there's still room for at least another 15 minutes of music on here... well, perhaps it keeps the list price down.

    2) The infamous "If It Feels Good, Do It" performance on the Mike Bullard Show (Canadian late-night talk show, now defunct). Ever seen a shark pounding the skins? Or Bullwinkle playing the bass? This appearance absolutely riveted the online group of Sloan fans at Sloannet. A classic. Unfortunate that in its place (if I recall correctly) is a straight-laced (yet naturally enjoyable) performance taken from an Australian talk show. Oh, well.

If you don't have a Sloan CD in your catalogue, or don't have the funds to complete the catalogue, or are kicking yourself because you didn't buy the "Second Hand Views" VHS, well buy this one. I, meanwhile, will be trying to figure out how to canvas both Murderecords and Sloan fans to get a double-CD (four-LP) B-sides/rarities project to follow this one (Trust me, there _are_ enough. I can't list them all here).

    5 out of 5 stars It's all good.......2005-05-19

I bought this for the DVD and the two new songs as I already had everything else by them. The DVD is great; it is nice to see how they have evolved over the years instead of just hearing it. The two new songs, "All Used Up" and "Try to Make It" show that they still have it. The only way the CD could be any better would be if it were longer, but in order to hear all of Sloan's great songs, you have to buy their other albums. As a Nova Scotian, these guys have made me proud for years and I am looking forward to many more great albums from the best band in the land.

5 out of 5 stars A great disc to add to your collection.......2005-05-10

I might as well state right out of the gate that I am a big fan of this band. I own all of their previous CDs, so it was no brainer that I would buy this one up. And if you are a Sloan fan, then I highly recommend you purchase this CD + DVD compilation too.

Simply put this disc contains all of Sloan's radio releases. So it is, in essence, a greatest hits package. In addition to the music, you also get a bonus DVD, which contains all of the videos the band has released. Plus, you also get some behind the scenes footage of how the videos were filmed and other documentary information.

I like this disc. It is getting some heavy rotation in my car at the moment, and for the near future anyway, I don't see that changing.
