    Album Description

"Eddie Daniels combines elegance and virtuosity in a way that makes me remember Arthur Rubenstein…he is a thoroughly well-bred demon." - LEONARD BERNSTEIN

"It is a rare event in jazz when one man can all but reinvent an instrument, bringing it to a new stage of its evolution." - LEONARD FEATHER, JAZZ CRITIC

"Perfect synthesis between classical techniqe and jazz sensibitily ...blinding virtuosity." - DOWNBEAT

"Eddie's debut album...will become the benchmark to judge all future recordings blending the world of classical music and jazz." - QUINCY JONES

Eddie Daniels is that rarest of rare musicians who is not only equally at home in both jazz and classical music but excels at both with breathtaking virtuosity. Daniels first came to the attention of jazz audiences as a tenor saxophonist with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. In 1968, a single clarinet solo on that group's Live at the Village Vanguard garnered sufficient attention for Daniels to win Down Beat's International Critics New Star on Clarinet award. Daniels' overriding ambition is to reach as many people as possible with his music, to enlarge the audience for both jazz & classical music and at the same time tear down the walls separating them.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Virtuosity!.......2006-06-07

For any of those music lovers out there who may think that anything performed outside the classical music purview is not real, take a listen to this impeccably performed and recorded CD. Not only is Eddie Daniels a brilliant musician on both the tenor sax and clarinet, he has an ear for line and riff that would make even the most daring of our classical music composers envious.

But this recording is not about Eddie Daniels: this recording is the totality of the Quartet assigned to his name. All the musicians here are first class: Hank Jones on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums. Their interrelationship in thinking is so keen that it seems wholly improvised, yet just when we've been dazzled by the individual passages for each instrument the quartet brings us back into the melody line, having embroidered the theme richly and imaginatively. 'It had to be you' is a delight, 'Passion Flower' has never sounded so made of love, 'Why you..' has a duet between piano and clarinet that starts a wild little drama, 'Azure' is Ellington as his best...the list goes on and on.

For those who have always wanted to enter an appreciation for jazz but have been afraid to approach, pull up a chair and join the growing throng. This is as good as it gets...pure virtuosity! Grady Harp, June 06

5 out of 5 stars Maktub rocks my world!.......2006-03-29

I've been a fan of Maktub in Seattle since I saw them open for India.Arie a few years ago and can't think of a local band I'd rather see live. This is a great album but go see them live if you ever get the chance.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-03-18

    Love these guys!!!
Saw lead singer Reggie Watts singing with Soulive during a Dave Matthews Band tour...found out he was actually the lead for Maktub!!...bought the cd and fell in love with them! They are amazing.

    4 out of 5 stars verrrry nice!.......2005-06-06

i had heard these dudes were big in seattle and i was like "Do they sound like SOUNDGARDEN!?" and then i realized i must sound kinda old! but yeah, i guess pretty girls make good grades and the blood brothers aren't the only bands coming out of seattle. maktub are definitely one of this great rock bands that aren't afraid to have soul. it seems like great vocals and an attention to melody died a long time ago. bands like tv on the radio (who if you like them, you'd like these dudes) are bringing it back. this much more on the neo-soul tip than the barbershop quartet thing that tv on the radio are up to. i bet these guys have GREAT record collections. love it love it. glad i own this.

5 out of 5 stars Songs that grow on you from a band with Soul.......2005-06-02

Preface: this is a totally biased review. I am a huge fan of Maktub. Saw them several weeks back in Boulder, CO and hearing this song live was no disappointment. They are a very tight band but without being too 'professional' and thereby draining the music of feeling. The album is sweet, too.

Review: if you like soul, but also crave something a bit heavier at the same time, you're going to like this album - and this band. If you like song lyrics about romance that are touching because they come across as real and heartfelt, not sappy, then you are going to like these words.

Maktub has grown on me with time. They may well do the same for you. Heavy, soulful and beautiful. If you get a chance, check them out live - they are on tour now in the US [and Vancouver, BC].

5 out of 5 stars I need my DAILY DOSAGE of Maktub..........2005-05-13

If Maktub is a Rock & Soul band, then "Say What You Mean" (SWYM) is a bit heavier on the 'Rock' than "Khronos" was, their previous CD. That said, Reggie "The Voice" Watts' incredibly soulful vocals are probably capable of making Black Sabbath sound like a soul band!

Having seen the band live performing most of the songs from SWYM, I love this CD even more. As with Khronos, SWYM is in heavy rotation in our household. It has (in my humble opinion) fewer instantly likeable songs than "Khronos", but a couple of them - Say What You Mean, Daily Dosage, Right To Breathe - are very infectious after only one listening. As a side note, the beginning of Right To Breathe is almost reminiscent in mood and tone of several Seal songs. Nobody Loves You Like I Do is another great song, and Blown Away is my least favorite tune.

Maktub is a great band to see live. If you have a chance, go see them. Reggie Watt's vocals are even more impressive in person - he is capable of improvising with the best of them. He is truly a musician. The rhythm section is also very, very tight. My wife and I got to chat with all of the guys in the band after their show in Baltimore, and they were all really nice, pleasant, and easy to talk to. No super-inflated egos.

All in all, SWYM is not coming out of my CD player for a while. If I do take it out, it'll be to replace it with "Khronos".

5 out of 5 stars Great Hard Bop Quintet Session!.......2002-11-07

This features Thad Jones on the flugelhorn with Pepper Adams, one of the great baritone sax players, making a really potent combination for this session. The rhythm section consists of Duke Pearson on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and the drummer Mel Lewis (maybe the start of their long association).

The harmony created by the two horns is very appealing as well as their solo work. Most of the tunes are in a medium tempo groove which includes a very upbeat arrangement of "Wives And Lovers". The set concludes with a very funky version, including tack piano, of "Yes Sir, That's My Baby"......the first and last minute being a rather satirical approach to the music style of the twenties.

This cd will appeal to those who like a tightly knit group that explores the tonal possibilities existing with the combination of flugelhorn and baritone sax, hard bop fans, or fans of these particular musicians. Really good medium tempo session that's good listening!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Blues CD!.......2005-07-03

I am a professional musician, based in Chicago, and have a huge collection of blues recordings. I have always been impressed with Phil Guy. As a guitarist/vocalist, Phil is at the top of his game. And, he's quite the likeable person. I became a dedicated Phil Guy fan upon hearing this CD! This is wonderful music. I listen to it over and over and over again and enjoy it every time. I take it everywhere I go and play it for all my friends. This is an absolutely must-have CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very good blues.......2003-05-04

I'm a big fan of Chicago blues, and this CD is one of my favorites. "Lonesome Blues" and "Say What You Mean" are superb up tempo songs. Great guitar work, strong vocals, and some good horn play make this very enjoyable for blues fans.

3 out of 5 stars Not terribly impressed.......2000-09-20

I picked this CD up from a live show that Phil did in New Buffalo Michigan, being very impressed with what they were doing. Alas, the CD is a bit of a disappointment. The vocal performance is a bit shaky in places, there are a few glitches in the recording and it's just not as good as most of my other blues CDs.

One nice thing about the CD though is that the bass is very clear in the mix (and uniformly well-played) which is cool to me since I'm a bass player. I'd also praise the horn instrumental about midway through the disc (whose name escapes me at the moment).

5 out of 5 stars Phil Guy gets his due.......2000-04-25

Say What You Mean is a great addition to any blues lover's collection. A good mix of up tempo "funkified" numbers, with plenty of traditional "slow & easy" blues. Phil's classic; "Fixin To Die" is one of my all time favorites.

5 out of 5 stars From the land of Big Star.......2005-05-29

The brief surge of rock that was recorded at the Stax studio resulted in the better-known releases of Big Star, but also this little-remembered wonder. Though released on Ardent, and a product of the same Memphis influences as their better remembered labelmates, The Hot Dogs offer a more soulful taste of Memphis than the exuberant power-pop of Alex Chilton, et al. There's plenty of the Beatles/Badfinger melodic constructions (and the acoustic/electric guitar mixes and harmony singing that accompany them), but also some touches of flute and funky organ (the latter of which brings to mind The Zombies) and jazzy drumming. Unlike the multitudes of Big Star reissues, the Hot Dogs' first long-player has always been fairly difficult to find.
